Re: Def Import problem with Incident form in 7.6.04

2012-01-11 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi Roger,

This last comment really feels wrong.

The whole idea behind overlays, is that you should be able to import a
base-definition supplied by BMC underneath your overlay.

The key issue here is "underneath". If we want to restore the original, as
in this case, just delete the overlay, and it will revert back to your
original.

The error you are getting seems wrong though. Something may be corrupt
with your overlay/basesform in the AR System database repository.

Hi Roger/Misi,

How do we delete the overlay? The object appears only once under

Why not use a TIBCO remedy adapter and create a TIBCO process to read
the EMS queue and perform the add/update/read via a request/response
object? Then you have full control over the integration to Remedy. Not
sure if there is an adapter for 7.6 but there were ones for earlier
Remedy releases.

The adapter invokes/uses the Remedy API and is fully Remedy and TIBCO
compliant

I have done this successfully with Remedy6.3 and it works like a charm

Hi,

First you need to make sure you have DevStudio in Best Practice
Development Mode.

There should be a column listing the form as Overlay when you list your
forms.

Right click on the form, and choose delete. This will delete the overlay,
and the form should change to Base.

Re: Disaster Recovery

2012-01-11 Thread Axton
That's a pretty generic inquiry. You should first define your recovery
objectives and what level of investment you are willing to make, in terms
of implementation time and cost. It is a compromise from that point
forward to balance the objectives and cost. If you can define the
objectives and the investment ceiling, you will get useful responses.
Short of that you will receive a lot of responses that don't apply with
the off chance that you will be able to use something someone sends because
their assumptions were in-line with your reality.

When it comes to HA, options start cheap, but the cost ceiling can go very
high, all depending on what you want to achieve.

OOTB Objects upgraded as Unmodified Objects on ARS 7.6.04

2012-01-11 Thread Tadeu Augusto Dutra Pinto
Hi all,

We have upgraded our AR Server successfully from AR System 7.1 to 7.6.04
version. J

I'd like to know if It's normal all the OOTB objects from version 7.1
become "Unmodified" (Customization Type) in 7.6.04 on DevStudio...

P.S.: All of our 7.1 objects were imported on 7.6.04 server as
"Unmodified" (including Forms, Filters, ActiveLinks, etc...)

Is that right?

Is there anyway to make these objects changeable?

I have downloaded the plug-in that converts objects to Custom... Can I
use this plug-in to convert all of my "Unmodified" objects to "Custom"
objects?

Thanks.

Old Environment:

AR Server 7.1

Oracle 10g

Unix 5.3

New Environment:

AR Server 7.6.04 P2

Oracle 11g

Unix 5.3

Att,

Tadeu

ARSlisters,

We just used the 7604SP2 Stack Installer to setup a new ITSM environment
(Linux). In looking at our Linux server AND our install directories for
the clients (User and Developer Studio), we can't seem to find the Data
Management Tool or the Foundation spreadsheets.

Can anyone provide some help as to whether or not the BMC Data Management
Tool or Foundation XLS come with the stack installer?

Thanks.

Hello List,
We are looking into implementing a Knowledge mgmt system.. currently
looking into Remedy's.. what are other applications that you are using out
there and how well does it integrate with ITSM? Did you buy canned KB
articles? (i.e. MS office/SAP related, etc.)

We are running ITSM 7.0.03 going to 7.6.x in the coming months...

Re: OOTB Objects upgraded as Unmodified Objects on ARS 7.6.04

2012-01-11 Thread Easter, David
An OOTB box is, by definition, unmodified. i.e. you haven't modified the OOTB
object. So yes, that's expected.

The objects are changeable - what Developer Studio will do if you want to
change them is make an overlay of the object and allow you to modify the
overlay. The OOTB object will remain unmodified and your overlay object will
be the actual object you modify.

Of course, it's recommended that you do not modify BMC OOTB objects at all -
but overlays will allow you to do so if there's no other way to accomplish what
you want to do. A better option, though, is to extend the BMC applications by
adding your own new fields or workflow vs. modifying BMC objects.

Re: Overlay and Applications

2012-01-11 Thread Easter, David
If you did it at the app level, you probably had to switch to base mode to make
the change you did... and if you make a change to a BMC object in base mode,
then yes - the upgrade would overwrite that change.

You can overlay an application - but you'd have to overlay the entire

If you are going to 7.6, you should wait on any bulk article loads
until after going to 7.6. I'm talking both canned and anything loaded
into the old RKM system. The conversion process is quite buggy.

we want to hide them from the object list. So I opened up the application (AR

But you can't overlay an application, so when we ever upgrade, these changes

Just making sure. Not a big deal I guess, but I wonder why they would make

Re: Overlay and Applications

2012-01-11 Thread Mueller, Doug
Everyone,

Just to be clear and try and address all the questions.

Yes, the OOTB applications from BMC are all deployable applications.

Yes, you can overlay definitions that are inside deployable applications. Any
form or workflow or menu
or anything in an application can be overlaid.

No, you cannot overlay the deployable application definition itself in the
7.6.04 release. There were some
technical issues as well as some business issues that we could not get resolved
in time and had to make
the call of not allowing the deployable application itself to be overlaid or
remove the overlay feature
altogether. So, we made the reasonable choice and kept the feature but
limited this one type of
object.

And, the limitation is being resolved and deployable applications will be able
to be overlaid in future
releases.

So, back to the original message (and Lisa got an answer to that already).

In order to change the characteristics of the deployable application today in
7.6.04, you would have to
modify the application in base mode. That will be overwritten during an
upgrade and you need to be
aware that it will happen. Then, once you are upgraded to the next release of
AR System, you will be
able to overlay that deployable application and make the changes in the overlay
and they will be
preserved across upgrades just like the changes to forms/fields/views/active
links/filters/menus/
escalations/…. are today.

I hope this helps clarify everything. The reality is that except for a very
focused change like the one
that Lisa is trying to do, there is really limited reason to overlay deployable
applications themselves. The
main need is to overlay a definition within the deployable application and that
can be done today. But,
it is a limitation today the will be removed to modify the actual deployable
application shell itself.

􀂄 Deployable applications—Overlays of deployable applications are not

David,
I don’t often challenge your word because you are so good at what you do that
you don’t often make mistakes…so if I’m wrong…please forgive….but…

I don’t see the ability to overlay a deployable application. Based on what I
read ‘you can’t version data’….and a deployable application is almost purely
data….so I don’t think that your statement below is accurate. If it is
accurate, can you provide additional details on how to overlay an application.

If you did it at the app level, you probably had to switch to base mode to make

yes – the upgrade would overwrite that change.

You can overlay an application – but you’d have to overlay the entire

Overlay and Applications

2012-01-11 Thread John Baker
Hello,

I do wonder when the time will come when base/overlay/etc are replaced
with the simple concept of a script.

Converting existing workflow to a script is easy and much of the work
has already been done, ie converting client side workflow to Javascript
already exists in the Mid Tier.

Writing a server side workflow (filters/escalations/etc) to Javascript
is entirely feasible.

Once we find ourselves using Javascript, everything will run (far) more
quickly, AR System (with ITSM) would not require 1Gb of memory and 30
minutes to start, and a simple source control system can be used to
merge the BMC base application with a client's changes.

I've not met an AR System admin who can't fiddle with some script, so
perhaps AR System 8 should be the day BMC bite the bullet, eject the
current model and move to simple text based scripts:

function my_active_link():
  if field(123) = "abc":
# Push value of field 456 on this form to another
push_fields(456, "Target form", 987)
set_fields(123, "X")
  else:
change_label(9000, 'New value of my label')
set_read_only(9000, True)

Alright, so I prefer Python to Javascript but I suspect most ARSlisters
can follow the above.

Re: Remedy JMS

I believe that if your company has a full TIBCO licence access to the
various adapters comes part and parcel with that. TIBCO provides a
plethora of adapters to various applications ranging from Remedy,
Seibel, SAP, PeopleSoft to Oracle, DB2, CICS, EJB, LDAP and files. There
are designed to enhance the base TIBCO ActiveMatrix product and allow
easy interfacing with these products and resources.

I agree and don't. If you change active links and filters by some scripting
language, then ARS won't be ARS anymore.
