Re: Syslog
Hi, Syslog is just a bunch of text log files on your local Unix/Linux server, where you can define different log levels for various services. In this case the AR Server. Customarily, the syslog would contain messages generated on that specific server only... It is very easy to write code that sends messages to syslog. Just do man syslog on a linux/unix machine to get information on how to generate syslog messages in C. I'm completely new to syslog. I searched a bit about log4j, and seems that it sends logs from the mid-tier to a syslog server. My idea is that Remedy can receive syslog messages and interact with them. We developed an event correlator in Remedy that can be accessed through web services. Event information is: an event code (each code is related to one situation like: printer is out of toner or server is down), a CI and a text description. The event correlator, depending on the event code, creates incidents, add info to incidents, updates an unavailability request, add info to a CI, etc. Now, one monitoring tool from a parter tells us that it is unable to communicate through web services. Only e-mail or syslog. E-mail seems a not so good solution, since a lot of SLA can be involved and e-mail is not assured and delays or mail losses can appear. Change Calendar/data visualisation performance
All, We have an issue with the performance of the change calendar - form opens quick enough, but the actual calendar/data visualisation takes anything from 1 to 3 minutes to display. System ARS 7.5p004, ITSM 7.5. Mid tier and AR Servers are running on T5240s, all running Solaris. Database is Oracle 11.2.0.1.0 A fair bit of discussion between ourselves, our support company and BMC, and we've yet to get any ideas on what could be slowing it down. We've run queries to demonstrate the performance of the queries behind the calendar - and they're practically instant. So the issue appears to be purely in the visualisation - creating the actual diary for display is whats taking an eternity. Any suggestions, the continual drawing of blanks is getting mildly irritating. I don’t remember any significant difficulties but: - remember that the underlying CMDB forms are ugly (you’ll see the instanceid, etc and you’ll be able to break things by modifying things like the reconciliationidentity) - you may need to add permissions to the CMDB as, otb, you can only get at things as a Remedy admin - you still need to have a CMDB license - you’ll still need AR licenses to modify CI’s Cheers Peter From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG]mailto:[mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Gordon Frank Sent: 20 February 2012 15:00 To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORGmailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Standalone CMDB ** I am considering hanging the OOTB CMDB Application off a custom application. Job opportunities for foreigners
Hi all, Recently I started to think in the option to go outside my country to look for a better job. Well, I think I'm unpaid for the kind of job I'm doing right know and don't see to many opportunities in my birthplace (Mallorca, Spain). Also the economical crisis we are suffering, places us in a very difficult situation, where the public administration doesn't pays the bills, and everybody is susceptible to be fired. We are not like in Greece, but the fear to be fired is flying over us. I see all the jobs positions that you are publishing on this list, and I always see the same sentence: US citized, and ability to obtain a secret level clearance. Thanks for your reply. Current environment is Windows Servers, MS SQL database, and ITSM apps. If we do a clean fresh install of the AR server and applications on the dev server (then take an image of that server for future rebuilds) would the db copy still work? Just overwrite the db that got created upon install? Beside disabling the email, Is there any data/schema that needs to be modified when you do a db copy before bringing up the new dev server? For instance I wonder if you have to search for references to the production server name in the workflow that should be changed to the dev server name? Re: Approval Engine Issues
First I want to thank all those who sent me their suggestions for a fix. BMC did get back to me on 2/21 informing me the problem I'm having with ARServer is a known bug and it can be fixed with a hot patch 008. This amounts to installing a new arapprove.dll file. There's only one problem, I can't find this patch on the BMC web site; go figure. If you go to there ftp site the last patch you see is 007. I've sent BMC an update explaining I can't find this patch and I await their reply. Thanks again for the help, Larry B. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Mueller, Doug Sent: Monday, February 20, 2012 11:20 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Approval Engine Issues Larry, You are right that the copying of this critical join form has copied information either in the change diary or in terms of the fields on the form to confuse the system and make it think that this new form is the key support form that the approval server uses rather than the original form which is really the key form. This is always something you have to take care with. If the form is a system form -- comes with AR System or is system generated or is a form that you generate but then configure into a subsystem (like this case where you probably created the original join but then ran apjoinfixup to complete the definition and reconfigure it for attachment to approvals) -- you SHOULD NOT clone the form. There are often either tags put into fields like the change diary or specific field combinations with reserved field IDs put onto the forms so that the system can find them regardless of any name change you have made to the form. When you copy the form, the system is confused as there are multiple forms that qualify. Depending on the subsystem, the system will either just error and complain that there is a conflict and not continue with that subsystem or will just pick one. This case seems to have just picked one but it unfortunately picked the wrong one. So, now, you are at the stage of wanting to remove this new form but keep any of the logic that is attached to it but attach it to the correct form. Is that correct? If so, the easiest way to do that is: 1) Find a list of all the workflow -- filters, active links, escalations -- that are attached to the form. 2) For each of these, open the definition and ADD the form you want to transfer the workflow to as an additional form on the attached to forms list 3) Delete the form you want to delete. This will remove it from the form list on all workflow but the workflow will have another form attached and so will not be deleted but will stay still attached to that other form. You have just completed the job of keeping the workflow with its attached form switched to another form. There should be no more than a handful of workflow items that need to be modified in step 2 so this should be a short process. I hope this helps, Doug Mueller -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Larry Barnes Sent: Friday, February 17, 2012 7:56 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Approval Engine Issues Thanks everyone for your quick response. There's only 1 field in the new form and that's why the approval engine is not working; in my opinion. Disalowing 7.5 developer tool on a 7.6.04 system
Hi listers I have a little question which bothers me, and I hope you can give me some insight. The background: We are about to go live with a new 7.6.04 sp2 environment. We have several consultants, not all of which are familiar with overlays. We almost had a catastrophe today with a person logging onto the new server with a 7.5 dev studio. He did not get any warnings about base/overlay mode, and almost wrecked a form by deleting fields from the wrong place. I am aware of the lowest api level, but our ITSM installation is still at 7.6.00 so there are some old plugins at api level 7.5 (or thereabout). The Question: How do I disallow dev studio connections 7.6.04 without disallowing the plugins? Any suggestions? Tell them Day 1 when they come in that they will be fired if they don't use the proper tool versionand follow through with the threat if they dothey will get the point or find another job :) The only way I know of to limit is with the api level...if you can't set that...I don't think you can do anythingin this instance, human communication and proper understanding are probably about the best way to conquer this particular issue. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Jonas Stumph Stevnsvig Sent: Wednesday, February 22, 2012 10:42 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Disalowing 7.5 developer tool on a 7.6.04 system Hi listers I have a little question which bothers me, and I hope you can give me some insight. Incident ticket SLAs
We have a new vendor that will start supporting our data center. We have a support group created for them. Say DataCenter Operations. They want to have 3 SLA targets created for their group to measure their work. Once the ticket is assigned to their group, 1. They will have 5 min to acknowledge it.(i.e., setting the ticket to Work In Progress) 2. Another 5min to decide if they can resolve it ot not, ie., they have to assign it to a different group if they cannot resolve. If they change the assignee group after 10min since they receive the ticket means they breached this SLA. 3. If they keep the ticket with them then they have 30 min resolve the ticket. I know how to create service targets for 1,3 they are OOTB Incident Respose and Incident Resolution SLAs. Can anyone assist on how to achieve item 2? ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug12 www.wwrug12.com ARSList: Where the Answers Are

Re: Syslog
Forking a java process is a taxing approach. It could cause problems if you have a spike in volume of calls to this subsystem as each JRE (one per call) will eat up memory, cpu cycles, file handles, etc. If your Remedy server is running on Unix or Linux, you can use logger(1). If you wrapped that code in a java plugin it would be much more efficient. If the program takes much time at all to return and you are calling through a set fields run process, it could eat up all your fast or list threads, depending on which forks the process. A Run Process action would alleviate this condition. Re: Disalowing 7.5 developer tool on a 7.6.04 system
I believe you can detect a user logging in using an older Dev Studio if you turn on your user logs and set them to store in a form. I have not tried putting a filter on the submit of the user log record to see whether an error there will stop the login. It looks like BMC accounted for this in the design because the Object Modification record fails to create but is only a warning in DS. Question:What is the best way to migrate data, def, config?
Hello List, Senario: Unix 6.1 Server A, current prod has ARS 7.5p4 installed on Oracle 10g local to server. The only components are Arsystem, ARDBC, AREA, EmailEngine, Flashboard. The mid-tier is remote. We have custom Change Management and Service (incident) management. Unix 6.1 Server B, new hardware/f/w, has ARS 7.5p4 installed (like prod) on Oracle 10g local to server. The only components are Arsystem, ARDBC, AREA, WebServices, Approval Server, Assignment Engine, EmailEngine, Flashboard. The mid-tier is remote. What would be the best way to move data, configuration, def files etc to the new server? Tell me if this will work. (Both server a b will be backed up) 1. We are going to extract the schema from Server A and import to server B. 2. This will bring over data, conf, def files from Server A, and delete Server B. 3. Then re-import the WebServices, Approval Server, Assignment Engine from the def files the installer laid down on the server. 4. Then start the application and test each of the above components are working. -- View this message in context: http://old.nabble.com/Question%3AWhat-is-the-best-way-to-migrate-data%2Cdef%2C-config--tp33374164p33374164.html Sent from the ARS (Action Request System) mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug12 www.wwrug12.com ARSList: Where the Answers Are
Re: Disalowing 7.5 developer tool on a 7.6.04 system
Jonas, Well, you can disable older protocols. But, that is not possible for you because you want to allow some tools but not others from the older protocol. You can disable access from given client types. But, that is not possible as you do want that client type to access but just version restricted. (you can also specify timing for the restriction and users but again, not useful for your case as you want the user and the time and the client type just not specific older versions of this client.) NOTE: You could use this setting to disable being able to run the old Remedy Admin tool as that is a different client type than Dev Studio. So, you could protect from pre 7.5 administration using this feature. The feature is the Disable-Client-Operation option that can be set in ar.conf/ar.cfg and is documented in the AR System Configuration Guide pgs 365-366. You can restrict the Admin to ONLY running in overlay mode. That would prevent that Administrator (you can configure this for each Admin so you can have one/some/all Admins given this restriction if desired) from running in base mode and making any changes. See AR System Configuration Guide page 83 (in version 7.6.04 as this feature was added in that release) about Access Restrictions for Administrators. This doesn't prevent the 7.5 Dev Studio, but it DOES make sure that regardless of version, the user cannot make modifications to ANYTHING in base mode as they only have rights to change things in overlay mode. Again, not everything, but a protection and that protection may be useful regardless of the version of dev studio being run. So, there are a lot of ways to restrict access, but not the exact combination you are asking about. The only other option is to essentially run with API logging turned on and see if there are any entry operations performed (other than GetListEntry or GetListEntryWithFields which have no workflow that fires on them) and put workflow that checks client type and version and returns error messages when it sees Dev Studio of an older version. This may not prevent the user from connecting, but it may cause them to have to consciously see and deal with errors that could be repeated warnings about a version mismatch (and combined with restricting them to overlay mode may give enough pain to force them to move forward). I don't know if there are or what specific entry operations dev studio may or may not make -- but you could turn on logging to see if it does any. This is the best we can offer for today. I hope this at least gives one more idea about the forcing the Admin to work in overlay mode (which by the way may block the 7.5 Dev Studio by itself as it will be connecting in Base mode rather than Overlay mode and it cannot change the mode it is connecting in and the Administrator doesn't have rights to work in that mode would essentially turn that version of Dev Studio into one that either cannot connect or connects only in Read only mode for those users.) 2 Technical Analysts Needed for a project in Houston, TX
I have a client in Houston, TX who has a need for 2 Technical Analysts starting mid March that will be a 7+ month contract. Our client is currently undergoing a ITSM implementation (7.6.04) and the next phase is heavily concentrated to design, build and test, leading up to deployment in October. We need someone who is an expert with configuring ITSM (workflows, GUI, data loading, integrations, etc.). We would highly prefer someone with BMC Remedy ITSM 7.6 Incident/Problem/Change Management Modules experience, experience with Active Link/Filter Design creation, and we would really prefer someone who has development and integrations experience as well. If interested, please e-mail me with your resume and contact information and I will follow-up directly to discuss further. -Carol Dorethy TEKsystems Account Manager csavi...@teksystems.com ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug12 www.wwrug12.com ARSList: Where the Answers Are
Re: Auto running report
There are a few ways to do this. We use Crystal Reports Distributor for much of our report automation; which would be all you need to meet this requirement (well and Crystal Reports). We also have Crystal Enterprise which will do this but it is a bit more cumbersome. I have also used Crystal Reports Exporter ( http://www.rainforestnet.com/crystal-reports-exporter/ ) when I worked at places without the CRD or CR Server. If you are looking to do this for free and don't have Crystal Reports you are either looking at either RDBMS functionality or creating a script (run by the scheduler in your OS or an Escalation) that will call runmacro.exe. In your script you would handle the file name. Of course you could also create a your own tool using the Remedy API (java/C/.NET). Re: Auto running report
Similar to the Scheduler that Jason mentioned; but on the server side (UNIX). This is one method we used. 1. Create a macro file: data modified in last 5 minutes 2. Create a report file. 3. Append the report to macro file. 4. Append to the function - to-file: /path/file.csv 5. On the server, using the runmacro to run the macros file. 6. Then you can write a script to move and rename to file.csv. 7. You can execute with an escalation every 5 or Cronjob. Example Marco marco.arq MarcoName Set-user: $USER$$PASSWORD$ Set-schema: $Form$$server$ Query: 1=% Form-open: Form-entry-list: 0 Report: 1=23=HELLO to-file: /PATH/file.csv Form-final: modify@ Query: 1=% end -- View this message in context: http://ars-action-request-system.1093659.n2.nabble.com/Auto-running-report-tp7308628p7310178.html Sent from the ARS (Action Request System) mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org attend wwrug12 www.wwrug12.com ARSList: Where the Answers Are
