Hi,

The JVM would not be involved at all in setting the server side log path.

The standard path for the logs in Windows is something like "C:\Program
Files\AR System\Server\Db\". It is just no way that these kind of paths would
have a problem working.

Ok instead of Apply just adds the close of the Windows. It is the same thing
as pressing Apply and then closing the Window manually.

Folks,

I have had this fault now and then and mostly got around by clicking Apply, OK
and re-open the server setting window. At one point I tried to change the path
name to d:\temp\tm_v1.log. I normally use very short file name - over the years
that have solved a few issues.

Good to know - that it was not me getting "barmy" over this issue and others
confirmed that there is a fault. It feels like one of those faults we will live
with for a long time. :-(

Thanks for the advice and suggestions,

Suresh,
Within Remedy servers, each server should have its own
'Server-Connect-Name'. You can query the form 'Configuration ARDBC' for
the Server-Connect-Name variable, and get the 'node' name...that'll tell
you what node the LB has you balanced to 'at that moment'...but with most
app lb's configured without sticky bits...you can't guarantee that just
because you are on that server for the call that gives you the results,
will be the same server the next time :)

JOB: Looking for a Chicagoland Remedy Admin/Developer

2014-03-04 Thread Susan Palmer
Looking for a Chicagoland Remedy Admin/Developer (no remote work) for full
time position.

Our system is fully CUSTOM (no ITSM) born in 2002. We started at ARS v5
and have upgraded through various ARS versions to ARS 8.1 during our
upgrade last October. We are Linux with Oracle 11g and two Mid-tier
servers behind a load balancer. We utilize Crystal Reports Server 2008 and
Designer for 200+ customer reports distributed automatically.

Even though we're custom, the capabilities of the system are extensive
covering everything related to our customers from locations, to finance
approvals, to installations, to equipment, to support. Other applications
that process data from our customers are tightly integrated and rely on our
Remedy system. We also serve the help desk side of the business.

You need to want to learn the company processes throughout all departments,
work with all departments to define and implement enhancements, to insure
all enhancements interact with already existing workflow, and to be able to
guide the request process to the best solution. The Remedy system is used
by every department.

It's not just create a form, field, active link or filter type of
position. It requires ownership of insuring the system is always
functioning and meeting the business needs. There is never a shortage of
requests and the ability to juggle requests and respond within deadlines is
important. When we implement an enhancement is needs to be correct and
functioning.

You should have at least ARS v7.5 or newer experience. Like the detail
aspect of a project, the design aspect, working with the business groups,
and most of all implementing a successful result.

Re: Database replication to reporting server

Mike,

Two possible strategies:

1) Do as you are doing now and as others have indicated, use archgid to change
the
schema ID after create to match the ID on the production system and then turn
   on replication for that table.

2) Just replicate the ENTIRE database. Don't worry about table by table,
replicate
everything -- including metadata tables. As new tables are added to
production,
they should start showing up in the copy (or maybe you need to turn on each
new
table with the technique you are using, but all the metadata would be copied
across so all IDs and everything that are in them will all be OK. You just
need
to be aware that when you change metadata using this strategy, you need to
restart your reporting AR System server to pick up the changes. Now, if it
is
workflow, you can just ignore it as you are not changing things on the
reporting
environment. But, if it is new forms or fields that you want to report on,
you
need to restart to pick up the changed metadata.

Either strategy will work.

Yes, the best recommendation would be to migrate the new remedy forms to both

Would anybody have the best-practice or the experience recommendation of how to
simplify setting of the replication process (for SQL database). For instance
replicate the remedy system tables ("arschema", fields, forms, etc.)

MACRO on server

2014-03-04 Thread Mayfield, Andy L.
I have been away from Remedy for quite a while, so forgive me if this is a
stupid question.

I have an old MACRO that is called by an Active Link on a form.

I am trying to get the server admin to get this file for me, but I do not
recall where it's located on the server.

Is there a specific location on the server this MACRO would be located? I
don't have access to search for it myself.

Hi,

If it is a macro within an Active-Link, you can save it to your local hard
drive via ARAdmin.exe. At least the older versions...

If it is something run on the server via runmacro.exe, you should be able to
find the path from where runmacro.exe it is called. Either through a Filter,
Escalation or maybe a cron job on the serer, check how the binary is called.

ARERR 8976

2014-03-04 Thread Joe Castleman
Greetings,

We're occasionally seeing ARERR 8976, "The CC list of the email
notification message cannot exceed 255 bytes." Indeed sometimes (not
always) the data we're trying to put in 'CC' exceeds 255 bytes; I'm trying
to decide what to do about it.

This system runs ARS 8.0, Build 001 201211030845 (I recall that might
actually mean "Build 2"); it's all custom ARS with no OOTB apps.

We have a number of forms that employ similar workflow, whereby a filter's
notify action takes data from a temp field (where the input length = 0
bytes), in the form of one or (usually) more email addresses, and uses this
string for "CC:". ($USER$ goes into "User:", so that will always be exactly
one recipient.) On the AR System Email Messages form, the 'CC' field (ID
18088) has input length set to 32000 bytes. (Elsewhere, email addresses are
defined as 64 bytes or less.) None of these specify (nor exceed) 255
bytes, but sure enough, if I go find the problematic Outgoing message in AR
System Email Messages, the data in 'CC' is truncated to 255 bytes, so I
guess this is the built-in ARS workflow (and not input lengths etc.).

I see in the online documentation "Creating a notify action" that the User
parameter is limited to 255 bytes, but it doesn't say anything about CC or
BCC. I am guessing, though, that CC and BCC are subject to the same
limitations as User. (It's hard to find documentation on the BMC website
after years of knowing how to find it in the hard copy books, but that's
neither here nor there, except to say that I haven't yet found what ARS
says about CC and BCC.)

Anyone else seen this? If so, were you able to get around it? For now, at
least, I can tell the users (or devise a pop-up message etc.) that if they
need to send to more than 4 or so recipients, then they'll need to do it
via multiple distributions. But I'd like to devise a permanent solution if
possible and get around the 255 byte limitation. I'm wondering about using
a Push Fields action instead of Notify, and pushing the data to AR System
Email Messages -- unless there's a central setting somewhere that I can
change this for the entire ARS.

Thanks,

Joe Castleman

Re: Mid-tier 8.1 and IE 11

2014-03-04 Thread Mueller, Doug
Such a seemingly simple question -- with a somewhat complex answer

There have been some challenges found with IE 11 -- which is why it is listed as
being currently not supported.

However, there are several options:

1) As has been noted by others, one option is to use a different browser and the
problems with IE 11 don’t matter

2) If on Windows 8 and using IE 11, there are Microsoft bugs that are causing
the
problems. The good news is that Microsoft has released a patch for these

The details and full testing (initial testing shows the problems we know
about
look like they are resolved, but we have not completed full regression
testing)
are still in progress, but the following URLs point to Microsoft information
   about the patch needed

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-feb

MS14-010 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2909921)
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms14-010

3) If on Windows less than 8 and IE 11. This seem to mostly work although we
have
found some issues with Rich Text Format fields. Testing is still underway
with
this combination to determine whether there is a real problem and then to try
and isolate what that problem is.

So, work continues, but there has been significant movement on the Windows 8 and
IE 11 combination with the Microsoft patch. There is still no official blanket
support of this browser in all cases because of the various problems that have
been uncovered, but we do think that most cases are now covered.

I hope this advance information is useful,

Doug Mueller

We're occasionally seeing ARERR 8976, "The CC list of the email notification
message cannot exceed 255 bytes." Indeed sometimes (not always) the data we're
trying to put in 'CC' exceeds 255 bytes; I'm trying to decide what to do about
it.

This system runs ARS 8.0, Build 001 201211030845 (I recall that might actually
mean "Build 2"); it's all custom ARS with no OOTB apps.

We have a number of forms that employ similar workflow, whereby a filter's
notify action takes data from a temp field (where the input length = 0 bytes),
in the form of one or (usually) more email addresses, and uses this string for
"CC:". ($USER$ goes into "User:", so that will always be exactly one
recipient.) On the AR System Email Messages form, the 'CC' field (ID 18088)
has input length set to 32000 bytes. (Elsewhere, email addresses are defined as
64 bytes or less.) None of these specify (nor exceed) 255 bytes, but sure
enough, if I go find the problematic Outgoing message in AR System Email
Messages, the data in 'CC' is truncated to 255 bytes, so I guess this is the
built-in ARS workflow (and not input lengths etc.).

I see in the online documentation "Creating a notify action" that the User
parameter is limited to 255 bytes, but it doesn't say anything about CC or BCC.
I am guessing, though, that CC and BCC are subject to the same limitations as
User. (It's hard to find documentation on the BMC website after years of
knowing how to find it in the hard copy books, but that's neither here nor
there, except to say that I haven't yet found what ARS says about CC and BCC.)

Anyone else seen this? If so, were you able to get around it? For now, at
least, I can tell the users (or devise a pop-up message etc.) that if they need
to send to more than 4 or so recipients, then they'll need to do it via
multiple distributions. But I'd like to devise a permanent solution if
possible and get around the 255 byte limitation. I'm wondering about using a
Push Fields action instead of Notify, and pushing the data to AR System Email
Messages -- unless there's a central setting somewhere that I can change this
for the entire ARS.

Thanks,

Joe Castleman

Hi List,

We have the table-based replication of the SQL production database to reporting
server.
Our DBAs require to provide them the T.. H.. and B.. table information along to
the schema name. This works fine for the existing schemas. Replication is the
real-time.

We have issues with the new tables. In some cases we create remedy form only on
the production server, and then a month later getting requirement to add the
same form onto reporting server. Setting the table-based replication is an
issue because after migration that the table's ID on reporting server (T..,H..,
B..) may have the different number.

Yes, the best recommendation would be to migrate the new remedy forms to both
servers at the same time.
Would anybody have the best-practice or the experience recommendation of how to
simplify setting of the replication process (for SQL database). For instance
replicate the remedy system tables ("arschema", fields, forms, etc.)

Thank you,
Mike

It will consume as much as you set your max
value of your JVM to be. Tomcat by itself does not have any max number that I
am aware of – that’s something to look up in the online Apache documentation.
So if you allocate 12 GB of memory to your system and set your max value of
your JVM to be 6 GB, yes your Tomcat instance could reach that maximum value.

Take this next bit of information with a
little pinch of salt – it may not be true today. Many years ago, I had heard
that each connection when using the Mid-Tier uses about 2 MB of memory. This
was many many years ago so that number could well have risen to 10 times that
amount. It is something you could try asking BMC Support (Mid-Tier team) if
they have a specific number for that for the most current version that you are
working on. They probably do have a statistic on that.

will tomcat double consume the memory for example now tomcat

4GB?.

also, what is the maximum concurrent users for Tomcat?.

is there any configuration should be done to limit Tomcat memory consumption?

First off its number of connections not
number of users. You could have 100 users, but 20 concurrent connections, not
100.

If an additional connection is attempted
when all available are used, it will be refused until one is available.

To answer your second question about what
happens with increasing the number of connection – the direct impact is it
would require larger heap size, more memory. For 200 connections, you might
need to double your numbers.

I finally fixed this.

The fix was to restart the server at the OS level. Something was "stuck" in
memory, for lack of a better explanation. I've asked BMC if there are any

I should have mentioned that the bad server name reference in the plugin error

Does the installer ever generate things like jar files on the fly and embed the

The BMC.FILTERAPI.NOE is defined in the //AtriumCore/cmdb/plugins/shared/pluginsvr_config.xml - and it exists there,
like this. I grepped and it is not located anywhere else.

I can't for the life of me figure out where it is getting the wrong server name
reference. I've looked in all of the other pluginsvr_config.xml files I can
find. I have looked in every *.sh startup script I could find. I checked
ar.conf, armonitor.conf, and everything I can think of. And bounced the server

It's really bizarre that it's just the one plugin doing this too. If it was

Re: MACRO on server

2014-03-04 Thread Jason Miller
It has been a while but if I remember correctly with a run macro the macro
definition was embedded in the AL definition. In the Admin Tool you would
save the macro to disk from the AL itself (similar to an embedded .arr
report definition). I don't remember if macros were supported after 7.5 so
I am not sure Dev Studio ever had this capability.

One other thought is if you export the AL to a def file you might be able
to copy the macro section in a text editor and past it to a new file
(slightly rings a bell).

Yeah I know the JVM is not involved with the administration plugin.

The plugin does use JRE to display the data and work with the plugin. What I
meant was that the JRE might not be able to recognize long file or directory

Hi,

The JVM would not be involved at all in setting the server side log path.

The standard path for the logs in Windows is something like "C:\Program
Files\AR System\Server\Db\". It is just no way that these kind of paths
would
have a problem working.

Ok instead of Apply just adds the close of the Windows. It is the same thing

Re: Why no phasing in Active Linsk and Escalations

2014-03-04 Thread William Rentfrow
Escalations don't need phasing.

Phasing is used so data is processed in the correct way. First you do your set
fields lookups and calculations. Second you process other actions - and then
you finally save the data, more or less.

Probably 95% of the escalations that are OOB run against a certain form for
qualifying data. For example, against HPD:Help Desk where 'Status'="Resolved".
Then they do something to the data like set Status = "Closed".

That of course kicks off all of the "On Modify" filters in the HPD:Help Desk
form, which means phasing is invoked.

So when escalations process data they depend on filter phasing. When they are
doing other stuff (command line Run Processes, direct SQL, etc) phasing is not
needed.

Mid-tier 8.1 and IE 11

2014-03-04 Thread John Baker
The link (MS 2909921) is another set of IE security holes that have been
patched. That's security, not functionality. The following seems to be
the problem with browser compatibility, ie lots of different JS files
and not a single cross browser implementation:

 find . -name ClientCore.js
./moz_noopt/javascript/ClientCore.js
./moz/javascript/ClientCore.js
./saf_noopt/javascript/ClientCore.js
./ie_noopt/javascript_ie9/ClientCore.js
./ie_noopt/javascript_ie11/ClientCore.js
./ie_noopt/javascript_ie10/ClientCore.js
./ie_noopt/javascript_ie8/ClientCore.js
./ie/javascript_ie9/ClientCore.js
./ie/javascript_ie11/ClientCore.js
./ie/javascript_ie10/ClientCore.js
./ie/javascript_ie8/ClientCore.js

This practice has not been common for a decade or so. I really hope
engineering are not trying to maintain all those versions! But diffing
them suggests they are, ie.

diff ./ie_noopt/javascript_ie11/ClientCore.js
./ie_noopt/javascript_ie10/ClientCore.js

< e.style.opacity=".20"; e.style.filter =
"progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Alpha(Opacity=20)";
---
> e.style.opacity = ".20";

Styling goes in the stylesheet - not the Javascript!

> try
> {
> window.event.keyCode=arg;
> }
> catch (e)
> {}

Wait, this isn't right. The javascript catches the error and throws it
away without logging to console. So I looked harder:

grep "catch" ./ie_noopt/javascript_ie11/ClientCore.js| wc -l
137

137 catch statements? Well, I guess that's error handling. I wonder what
they do:

grep "catch" ./ie_noopt/javascript_ie11/ClientCore.js
}catch(ex){}
} catch(ex){}
} catch(ex){}
...

(and it goes on.)

So, someone has been "solving" bugs in Mid Tier by catching the
exception, throwing it away, and carrying on regardless.

In summary, IE11 has nothing to do with the problem - IE isn't such a
bad browser now-a-days. The problem is the quality of the Javascript.

Re: Unable to log into ARS 7.5

2014-03-04 Thread Joe D'Souza
The last error reported after about 20 minutes after the last successful
operation is:

Tue Mar 04 23:59:29 2014 Distrib : AR System Server is not currently
available -- will retry connection (ARDSWARN 3004)

Looks like your AR System Server has terminated.

This could be because of many reasons. But because I see a invalid login to
the Oracle database error earlier on in your log file yesterday, I suspect
someone or something is changing the ARSystem database password from outside
the AR System administration console that could be causing this.

Cheers

Joe
