2019-11-28 Thread Doug Blair
Doug Mueller, The List, The Universe and all that

Forty-two, right? Nuff said, huh?

I suppose that we could have figured out that someday this time would come. The
news of Doug Mueller’s retirement and the subsequent shutdown of the ARSLIST,
might have been predictable and inevitable, and there are both sad and
enjoyable experiences and events connected to each. I’ve known Doug since 1993
and have been honored to work with him on various Remedy panels, projects and
conferences.

To a great extent I owe my computing career to Doug (and another guy, also
named Doug, who couldn’t deal with whatever that “Remedy” startup was…). So do
any of us - dozens, hundreds? - who were able to build enterprise-scale
solutions to some really, really complicated problems, using processes that
Doug envisioned. We owe a lot to Doug, and we owe a lot to The List.

Doug came up with a marvelous engine, hooked into lots of services,
technologies, platforms and other processes. We learned from him how to use it
to make our myriad enterprises better. ARSystem (in all of its various names)
has been a true game changer and in our little corner of the world, that is
profound. Tens of thousands of companies and agencies may never figure out the
degree to which they depend on the concepts he has contributed.

To be fair, many many other engineers and designers have helped along the way,
but I think Doug deserves credit for the foundation ideas, way back when
before there was dirt.

Doug (and Dan Bloom too, big time!) also deserves credit for another
fundamental concept that was present at the beginning and continues to this
day: open exchange of the knowledge needed to make the science work. Doug has
been a frequent and consistent contributor to The List, patiently explaining,
passionately defending, always sharing. Doug supported and advocated for this
tech-centric and customer-centric forum, even when it might not have been to
corporate advantage.

As we leave the ARSLIST and go forward to work with these and other
technologies, that notion free exchange of knowledge and criticisms, ideally
with some honest corporate participation, is one we should try to adopt and
promote wherever we can. Let this NOT be the end of an era.

I didn’t mean this to be such a Dougfest, because there are are so many of you
still reading this who have become personal friends as well as go-to people
when things got tough. I for one will really miss you all! I was going to try
to start naming some, but Matt Laurenceau name-checked just about everyone I
ever met last week so I figure you can just go ask Matt.

Doug Mueller, thank you for making the rest of my life possible. I hope we have
not heard the last from you (unless you want it that way) and I wish you
satisfaction from all that you choose to do or not to do, bearing in mind that
forward-looking statements do not imply any sort of commitment that any feature
of your life will be included in a future release.

The rest of you, please do keep in touch. Communities is a good place to start
looking for addresses

Long Live The List!

2019-11-27 Thread David Durling
I want to add my well wishes to Doug on his retirement! I remember a brief
encounter with him on a technical question - maybe a newbie one - during
something like an "Evening with Engineering" at an Orlando RUG (2001?). He
& the other staff were helpful, friendly, and of course, knowledgable.
That experience, plus the posts I've seen from him over the years with his
enthusiasm for helping people solve problems & for explaining how things
worked, have always given me a good impression of him and the people around
him.

I'm also sad to see this list go. Though my university left the ARSystem
platform a while back, the arslist was an important resource for me.
Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this list over the years, from
running it to those who gave thoughtful answers, sometimes very detailed.
It was a pleasure to be a part of this list!

May God bless you all!

Aww Bye Old Family! I’m living in SnowVille these days but still check in
and read what little has been happening.

My favorite Doug moment was when he called me personally at what was 5:30am his
time to help me with a problem that I had been trying to fix all night. 5
minutes on the phone and all was well. I miss that kind of small town family
feel!

Take Care, Y’all!

Engaging before Thanksgiving happens.

Obviously enjoyed the Tech (AR System) and People (Doug) love shared in the
past couple of weeks.

I'll share my story.

My first job (yeah, before 2000, just after school), was to implement AR System
for a telco in Europe. Definitely loved the technology!
Did a couple of other AR System implementations in Europe
Then I was lucky enough to join Remedy Corp. I was so excited by this Silicon
Valley startup!
That's how I met Doug. He took the time to send a 2-page Email explaining bits
and bytes of how seamless Single Sign On should work with AR System. I was
truly amazed.
We then had the "Peregrine interlude", as many of you know it...
BMC became such a better home for all of us.
And so much happened at BMC since Remedy joined (already 17 years ago!). And
you can all be proud, the hottest items in BMC's portfolio leverage the spirit
& magic that was inherited from Remedy
I've then met Dan, Misi, Jason, LJ, Kelly, Lenny, Phil, Arnold, Doug B, Dave
and many others (Anders, Tony, Betina, Joe, Shyam, Rick, Axton, David, Carin,
Eric, Herb, Kais, Matt R... just to name a few). Enjoyed much time (online or
IRL) with many of you.
So much was achieved thanks to conversations between all of you.

My key takeaway from this story:
People are the core of everything.
They create technologies, they enable stories, they connect to other people to
spread successes.

Wishing Doug the best.
And wishing you all best Business, hopefully with AR System or Helix.

Cheers,

Sad to hear on both fronts. I enjoyed my time on the list and also enjoyed
the conversations with Doug on the list and outside the list. He was an
inspiration to me personally and professionally; always the voice of
reason. Doug, all the best, and I hope you enjoy yourself with whatever
comes next. To the list, the old timers, time spent here was time well
spent. I enjoyed the conversations, the banter, and meeting all of you in
person that I was able to meet over the years. The Remedy/ARS community
was my home for a time and there are a lot of great people I had the
pleasure of getting to know.

Well, even though I have been in-active on the ARS/Remedy platform for more
than 10 years I continue to subscribe to this list and this community. I was
fairly active on the ARSList and with Remedy in the late 90’s and early 2000’s
and in many ways I owe that to Doug and the visionary software he created. I
can still recall how excited I was whenever Doug would weigh in on a question
or thread on the list.

Doug, I wish you the best and I hope that you carry a sense of pride and

Hi,

The Action Request System is not dead at all, it is only the name Remedy that
is going out of circulation.

The Action Request System now resides under the Helix ITSM umbrella.

Hi,

I guess it is a fitting time for the ARSlist to go. Doug was one of the
earliest members of the list, and has always engaged with us here.

I had the privilege to meet Doug a week ago at the BMC offices after the Helix
Immersion Days. You were always an inspiration and a source of technical
insights stripped off the otherwise permeating marketing fluff. I wish you good
luck in future endeavors and hope to reconnect in years to come.

Even though Remedy as a brand name seams to be dead, I hope that Remedy will
continue to live and evolve.

Let us help BMC understand what a great rapid development platform it is. Let
us help them understand that the Innovation Suite and the Action Request System
should be merged into a single platform again.

The ARSlist has has been a very important place for me, making it possible to
connected with all of you, our extended family of Remedy professionals. I am
sure we will be able to stay connected in the future where we continue to help
and collaborate with each other.

Loved the AR System from the start and always admired what you created
Doug. Therefore my family and I thank you for enabling me to create a
career around that. Glad I got to meet you at the RUGS.

To members of the list, I was lucky enough to have it as a resource when
I started at Remedy Corp in 1999 and while it was still very popular. I
learned a lot, thank you.

To Dan, Misi and Jason, thank you and well done for making our jobs that
little bit easier.

All the best, see you on BMC communities.

Doug. So long and thanks for everything you have done for so many of us in the
Remedy community.

It is a bit mind boggling to this day that the platform architecture continues
to evolve on the original technical foundation you set in motion.

And you have always been such a great person to talk to anyone in the
community, and meet them where they are. Every conversation with you was truly
an opportunity to learn something, which is something that is getting rarer and
rarer these days. Thanks for the inspiration!

I hope you can continue your pursuit of happiness, in this next chapter of your

Same here, met Doug at 2004 RUG in DC, took picture with him, was so proud and
happy. Been out of Remedy for more than 10 years but like to hang out in this

only caretakers get the final say.

Someone please pass all these “Thank You” notes to Doug as a thank you for his

Without the list my survival would be have been hard especially in the

Yes, truly sad news.

I met Doug in 2004 at the Washington DC RUG conference and was impressed by his
charisma and passion for his work, I remember taking some pictures with him at
the event, he was welcoming people and asking them to tag their names on a
panel where it had the names of all participants (or almost all) as background.
I also remember playing some video game with him at one of the parties of this
event and it really struck me because it was so nice to meet the person who
created the tool I was working on and that he was so friendly and charismatic.
I met him again other times by the years, some meetings and other ARS-related
events. It certainly had some influence on my career.

Regards,

Tales.

events, and for me, the rare opportunity to actually work with you for
several months on a project. It was truly an honor and something I will
never forget.

Best wishes in your future endeavors Doug! I hope we'll still see you around
my friend.

With respect and admiration,

Tim Powell

Subject: Announcements: Doug Mueller has left BMC, ARSlist will be shutting
down on US Thanksgiving, Nov. 28th

Doug Mueller's last day at BMC was Monday, September 30th. As we all know,
Doug was the creator of the ARSystem as a founding member of Remedy
Corporation.

He has always retained the philosophy of supporting the user community, even
before he accepted my invitation to join this list in 1993.

After consultation with Jason and Misi, the current custodians of this
ARSlist, it was decided that I should post to this external list that Doug
has left, in the hopes that all current and former members of our community
can express their best wishes here where it can be done outside of a
Corporation based community and where Doug can of course also read them.

In Doug's honor, it was also decided that we would shut down the ARSlist
permanently on US Thanksgiving, giving folks until then to post their
comments, and to signify the thanks we give to Doug for all he has done.

My understanding is that the archives will continue to be available, and of
course can be saved for posterity.

For my part, it was sad news that someone who has contributed so much, holds
so many forward thinking innovative patents singularly and jointly with
others, would be departing.

I was supposed to post this yesterday and it took me until today to accept
that he really had left. I won't be disappointed if I am proven wrong ...
