That's true.. I didn't think of that. I do that too sub consciously. Its
useful to even see fields that are not in view on any of the view..

I use the outline mode in the field list to work with fields that are
buried. Sometimes it can be a bit of a pain, admittedly.

But essentially, what I do is select the field in the form view, then look
for the field underneath it in outline view. From there I can usually right
click/add overlay and edit the properties.

I use the outline view because fields with the same parent - whether it's a
panel, a tab, or whatnot will all be grouped together. There are a few
buttons at the top of the field list that let you pick between views.

would be to not use overlays and do stuff in the base mode - which for many

anything to that field when in the best practice mode, to protect that

Hello,

ARS 8.1 / SRM 8.1

I have a question on how best to do something with Dev Studio. On the
SRS:ServiceRequestConsole form, there is a panel field for the Cart Review
stuff. This panel field is on top of other fields that I want to edit. Is
there an easy way to temporarily hide that panel in Dev Studio so that I can
work with the fields underneath it? I know I can add the cart panel to the
view overlay, push the panel to the back layer, change the fields I want,
then bring the cart panel back or remove it from the overlay. That seems
really cumbersome. Is there a better way?

Thanks,

Thad

opening an application and got the same.

I looked at About Studio Installation Details Configuration View Error Log

When I see 'could not install' messages I tend to assume the tool is broken in
ways that aren't worth trying to figure out unless you are someone responsible

again, though I would use SP4 instead. Focus on why things won't install right.

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts in Developer Studio

2013-03-01 Thread Steve Kallestad
A few tips off the top of my head...

For those out there who work on several different instances of developer
studio...

Working lists are defined in workspacedir/WorkingListDefinition.xml

It's a very easy to understand XML file. You can copy it between
workspaces and machines to have your handy set of working lists available
without recreating them manually.

There's also the Switch Workspace command in the file menu. That's handy
for when you have a few different focus areas. You can have a different set
of working lists in each workspace.

Window-Preferences is something I don't look at often enough, but it's has
a few options in there that are handy.

Setting default permissions for objects saves all kinds of time and rarely
needs to get changed. QBE match as well.

I also uncheck the All Views options for screen objects so I can manage
that myself.

One thing that had me going for a while was how to move objects around with
the keyboard.

When you have one selected, hit the period button (.). Once you've done
that, you can use the arrow keys to reposition. For finer control, adjust
the Keyboard Move Step Size in Window-Preferences.

And don't dismiss the built-in help. While there are some areas where it's
a little thin, I'm almost always surprised at how helpful the help actually
is.

When you have a lot of windows open, you can CTRL+SHIFT+E to pop up a
switching utility that you can read all the names and select one.

You can also hit the Select Clean Editors button and Close Selected
Editors to close all of the objects that are saved.

And just for grins, try this.

Ctrl+3, then type New A It will autocomplete and give you fast access to
create a new active link.

I don't know when Show Fields Not In View button showed up on the outline
list, but that has saved me tons of time.

I use that workspace thingy and sometimes copy them to another PC so I do
not need to rebuild another workspace.

** A few tips off the top of my head...

For those out there who work on several different instances of developer
studio...

Working lists are defined in workspacedir/WorkingListDefinition.xml

It's a very easy to understand XML file. You can copy it between workspaces
and machines to have your handy set of working lists available without
recreating them manually.

And lastly, I use AutoHotKey http://autohotkey.com to remap my capslock
key to CTRL. The three times a year I actually need caps lock, I can
disable it temporarily, but you would be surprised how much of a difference
a little change like that can make.

Developer Studio issue

2013-02-27 Thread Brittain, Mark
Hi All,

I hope there is an easy fix for this one. Today I updated java and not Studio
does not load. The error I get is no JVM found after searching the following
locations:
C:\Program Files\Java\jres6\bin\javaw.exe. When I went looking for the file I
found in
C:\Program Files\Java\jres7\bin\javaw.exe

So do I have to de-install/reinstall studio or something else to get up and
running again.

Re: Developer Studio issue

2013-02-27 Thread Jason Miller
We have been using symbolic links and pointing installers to those instead
of the actual Java install directories. Similar to what you said about
installing to ../jre instead of ../jre7 or ../jre6. We let the installer
installed in the path it wants (except for changing to D:) and then created
a ../jre and/or ../jdk symbolic link. If we update Java from 6 to 7 we
just need to update the symlink.

Windows example: mklink /J D:\Program Files\Java\jre D:\Program
Files\Java\jre7

It creates a junction (like a shortcut that apps can use) called D:\Program
Files\Java\jre that points to the jre7 directory.

Here is output of Dir from one of our systems:
 Directory of d:\Program Files\Java

02/21/2013 10:45 PMDIR .
02/21/2013 10:45 PMDIR ..
02/21/2013 10:45 PMJUNCTION *jdk *[D:\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_13]
02/21/2013 10:46 PMDIR jdk1.7.0_13
02/21/2013 10:45 PMJUNCTION *jre *[D:\Program Files\Java\jre7]
02/21/2013 10:43 PMDIR jre7

In Mark's case a quick the following should provide a quick fix (assuming
MS Vista/server 2008 or greater): mklink /J D:\Program Files\Java\jre6
D:\Program Files\Java\jre7

Hi All,

I hope there is an easy fix for this one. Today I updated java and not Studio
does not load. The error I get is no JVM found after searching the following
locations:
C:\Program Files\Java\jres6\bin\javaw.exe. When I went looking for the file I
found in
C:\Program Files\Java\jres7\bin\javaw.exe

So do I have to de-install/reinstall studio or something else to get up and

Re: Developer Studio issue

2013-02-27 Thread Rick Westbrock
Great tip Jason, I've used hard and soft links in Linux before but hadn't
done so in Windows before today. I was able to create both the junction you
suggested as well as one joining jre6 to jre7 so that any existing programs
that insist on looking for jre6 can work and I can still let Java install to
its default directory. Now when version 8 rolls around I just need to update
those two junctions and I should be good to go.

I also remembered that the Data Import tool stopped working with the same
error for not being able to find the jre6 path on my machine. I had updated
my path variable as well as the ini file for Data Import as well so who
knows where the pointer to jre6 is buried for these programs.

If we update Java from 6 to 7 we just
need to update the symlink.

Windows example: mklink /J D:\Program Files\Java\jre D:\Program
Files\Java\jre7

It creates a junction (like a shortcut that apps can use) called D:\Program
Files\Java\jre that points to the jre7 directory.

Here is output of Dir from one of our systems:

 Directory of d:\Program Files\Java

02/21/2013 10:45 PMDIR .

02/21/2013 10:45 PMDIR ..

02/21/2013 10:45 PMJUNCTION jdk [D:\Program
Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_13]

02/21/2013 10:46 PMDIR jdk1.7.0_13

02/21/2013 10:45 PMJUNCTION jre [D:\Program Files\Java\jre7]

02/21/2013 10:43 PMDIR jre7

In Mark's case a quick the following should provide a quick fix (assuming MS
Vista/server 2008 or greater): mklink /J D:\Program Files\Java\jre6
D:\Program Files\Java\jre7

You got to give your JVM more startup and max memory too. You need to bump

Have a look for a file called devstudio.ini in the same directory as the

c:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts in Developer Studio

2013-01-24 Thread Joe D'Souza

A February deadline works for me.

I am close to CA time (being at Alaska) for 3 weeks of the month AND on CA
time even when back home in NJ on the 4th week so I can work with my current
customer on their schedule - so whatever weekend schedule works for Jason
should work for me. Rod, what would work best for you? Your inputs are
invaluable and we would like you to be able to participate in any
discussions that we plan to have as a group.

I do not mind a weekend with one small clause - I'd like to make good use of
twilight / daylight hours whilst here engaging in my hobbies with
photography and trekking that I used to do years ago when in college whilst
in Alaska. These mountains look super inviting so don't blame me. Also
thinking of renting snow bikes one of these weekends - I heard you get them
here downtown. I've noticed quite a few people riding bikes even in snow and
ice (I'm not kidding) and I'd be damned if I leave this place without trying
it! It's quite fascinating to see them snow bikers when its so slippery, so
I really would love to see how a snow bicycle can handle that!

being able to use this tool efficiently is important to people :)

We were emailing off list earlier this evening and sharing some of our most
recent discoveries. Guess it is only fair we let everybody in.

Joe/Rod, let's set a date. This way we don't just keep saying it is coming
(it has been 3 months already). Is it fair to say we'll publish before the
end of Feb? That is a bit over a month. Maybe we can under-promise and
over deliver (at with a ver. 1).

Subject: Keyboard Shortcuts in Developer Studio

We've recently upgraded to 8.0 and are just starting to use the developer
studio for the first time. Is there any way to configure or define keyboard
shortcuts in the developer studio? This would be especially useful for guide
configuration as the devstudio is far more mouse intensive than the old
administrator tool.

Thanks,

Roy

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts in Developer Studio

2013-01-23 Thread Jason Miller
Ok, ok. This Dev Studio Tips and Trick topic keeps coming up. It is like
being able to use this tool efficiently is important to people :)

our anchorman with whatever we were collecting so I'll need to circle back
with him - maybe its not yet up there as we were still adding content to
 the
document as it was not ready for use without the backup of a live

What we had was good enough for use during a live presentation.

So wait up on Jason to reply to this one. I'm not sure where we are at this

Look for our (Jason Miller, Rod Harris myself - with some help from Susan
Palmer and others) Tips and Tricks on the Dev Studio. We have enlisted some
known keyboard shortcuts there. We had a presentation done on RUG 2012, and
it should be up there. We intend to continually update this and possibly
host a similar presentation next RUG 2013 too..

2013-01-04 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Another major nice to have would be to be able to sort the fields in an action
(i.e. Open Window, Push Fields, Set Fields, .)

For example . When you have an Open Window action with a large number of fields
of data being passed it is a major pain to find the field in the action to be
able to change it.

No (figuring you were thinking Jason Miller instead of Jason Bess).  We have
been collecting our ideas in a Google Doc and have even started to put some of
that into an unpublished document on the BMC Communities.  The document isn't
really helpful in its current state though.  Is it too late for me to make a
New Year's resolution to finish it?  :)

What is missing from Dev Studio is the ability to add/remove columns on the
Relationships tab.  Also it would be nice to have some more right click options
(Delete, Rename, Copy Name, Export to File, etc.).

Hi Claire, I haven't looked on earlier versions, but V8 dev studio has the last
changed by column, it just needs to be turned on. You'll need to exit and
re-open dev studio before the column populates.

Window Preferences Remedy Developer Studio Object List View Find the

Re: Regarding installation of BMC Remedy Developer Studio

2012-11-19 Thread dan
Perhaps the client thinks that you can accomplish what is needed without the
Developer Studio?

Since you don't seem to know what the Developer Studio is, nor encountered a
need for a Support ID before,
you certainly shouldn't be using it on an ITSM System. Nor should your client
have hired you to do so.
Could explain why they will not give you access to the tool or their Support ID.

I certainly hope no one on the list helps you obtain a copy.

Having read what I just wrote I realized it is the harshest I have been in 20
years about this sort of thing,
but, after rereading the previous two posts, it still seems correct and
appropriate.

I have fewer more doubts.

For my project, requirement is to work on ITSM 7.6. Client will provide access

So is it possible to just get Developer Studio tool? Also while downloading
this tool, Support ID is being asked, which is also not shared by client?

In keeping above constraints in mind, can you please suggest me now how to get

Remedy Developer Studio is not a product sold separately from AR System.

You cannot purchase just Developer Studio. Developer Studio is a component
that comes as part of a BMC Remedy AR System purchase.

It does not come with a Remedy Application license. Not exactly sure what
was meant by that, but no BMC Remedy application licenses or BMC Remedy
application user licenses come with BMC Remedy AR System.

minimum. It come with a Remedy Application license and a Support ID. Check
with your BMC Salesman Executive Representative, He/she can assist you.

Hi Neha,

You have to go to the BMC Product Download site for downloading the BMC
Remedy AR System suite. Before Installing the ARServer you need to install
jdk 1.6 or above followed by Any database server (MS SQL
Server,Oracle,DB2,Sybase) then arserver, the suite includes arsystem server
along with all the components that comes with the package and Developer
studio is on of the component. There are 3 Default license comes with the
installation suite. the default user is Demo with no passowrd. You can
give password during intallation. And to be able to buy license it cost you
in lacks, hence you need your sales team to contact BMC for license.

Sanjay

2012-11-18 Thread Neha Khandelwal
Hi,

Thanks for providing your assistance.
I have fewer more doubts.

For my project, requirement is to work on ITSM 7.6. Client will provide access
to everything, except BMC Developer studio tool. So this tool we need to get on
our own.

So is it possible to just get Developer Studio tool? Also while downloading
this tool, Support ID is being asked, which is also not shared by client?

In keeping above constraints in mind, can you please suggest me now how to get
BMC Remedy Developer Studio tool?

The answer can be found in ARSmarts (www.arsmarts.com). ARSmarts lists
all the relationships of all objects type, and also offers you a much
better view of Base and Overlay objects.

I sent this earlier, and just wanted to remind you:

ARUtilities will tell you if a form is part of a join.

Download ARUtilities (note there is a free trial period)
http://www.arutilities.com

Login to your server with ARUtilities
Search for the form you wish, and double-click it
When the details popup, select Cross Reference
In the Object Type column you will see Join Form
Note that the list can provide you with a lot more info than just joins

Hope this helps.

And if you are on a poor man’s budget and do not mind writing a small query to
the database, query the schema_join table using the schemaid of the table you
want to find out about.. It may turn out to be a bit of a nested query, but
doable..

In your 7.6.4 system if you show relationships on a form you know is in a join,
it lists that join form as a relationship? If your answer is yes, that was
fixed some time between 7.5 P7 and whatever your patch of 7.6.4.

Re: Check if the form is a base form using Developer Studio

2012-06-05 Thread remedy
ARUtilities will tell you if a form is part of a join.
Login to your server with ARUtilities
Search for the form you wish, and double-click it
When the details popup, select Cross Reference
In the Object Type column you will see Join Form

Note that the list can provide you with a lot more info than just joins

Hope this helps.

This is in your Server Information screen on the Configuration tab. It
will require a reboot of your server and if I remember right the first
time after the restart is when it will build the relationships so could
take some time for your system to come back up depending on the amount
of workflow on the server.

source control in BMC Remedy Developer Studio 7.6.04

2012-04-18 Thread Pruitt, Christopher (Bank of America Account)

Hello Listers,

Can anyone tell me if that is any Source Control application that integrates
with the BMC Remedy Developer Studio 7.6.04 tool? If not, then how does BMC
Remedy Developer Studio 7.6.04 handle Source Control?

Today we are preparing to migrate from AR System 7.1 patch 11 to 7.6.04 in the
next coming months. With the AR System 7.1 Admin Tool we integrate with the MS
VSS source control application. I was told that MS VSS does not work with BMC
Remedy Developer Studio 7.6.04 so we are trying to find a solid replacement, as
we are required to use some kind of source control with BMC Remedy Developer
Studio 7.6.04.

Any insights would be very helpful.

Another option would be provide button/links on the main screen that open
up other forms/dialogs where you can add a lot more fields/workflow and
will have full control, instead of customizing OOTB screens.
If it is not acceptable then see if you could find some space in one of the
page tabs else you could just add a new page tab to the page holder that
holds WorkDetails/Relationships/DateSystem and try to put in all your
fields in there. That way you do not have to expand the width.

Create an overlay for the View or Views you want to modify (depending on one
language or several) and then widen as you please.

The comments about screen resolution come into play in terms of what you can
see on the screen at one time, not filling the screen.

IF the problem is you don’t have room on the screen after using all of it, the

Developer Studio 7.6.04 SP1 - ARERR 5334 Cannot switch to Best Practice Customization mode

2011-06-15 Thread Tony Cesaro
Has anyone run into this issue and resolved it? When I am in Base
Development mode and attempt to switch back to Best Practice Customization
mode, I get the following error message:

Cannot switch to Best Practice Customization mode. You are part of the
Overlay base group on one or more of the servers that you are logged into.
(ARERR 5334).

I have looked on the ARSList, BMC Communities, BMC Support Knowledge Base,
and the ARSystem Error Messages PDF and cannot find any other description of
this error anywhere. I have even turned on and analyzed logs on the
ARSystem side to see what is throwing this error but I don't see anything.

I wanted to send this out to the list before I open a support case on it.
If I do end up with a case, I will post the solution to the list. Thanks
for any help anyone can provide.

Re: Developer Studio 7.6.04 Form View Resize.

2011-06-08 Thread Shelston, Patrick
You have to use panels that will auto-expand (set to Fill).

Make sure that if you have any nested panels that all are set to fill.

Sometimes I find that I need to reset the layout to XY, resize the
object DOWN a little bit (save) and the reset back to FILL. There's a
bug in there somewhere, and that's the only way I've been able to
resolve this issue when panels are not auto-expanding even if they are
set to FILL.

Re: Developer Studio: Can the outline of form be exported to excel/word/etc?

2011-06-07 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

If you export your forms to an arx-file, RRR|DefFieldList utility can
convert it to a format suitable for Excel.

Download at: https://www.rrr.se/cgi/tools/main#rrrDefFieldList

usage: rrrDefFieldList [ -splitrows ] file.def [ result.{skv|txt|xls} ]

Using the def-file, a list of all data fields are produced with various
information.

The listed information includes information about Form, Id, Name, Label,
Type, Option, Length, Enum-values, Default, Pattern and Menu of each
field.

-splitrows option will make separate rows for each selection-field-value
and/or label.

The TXT-format produces a tab separated list (default).
The SKV-format produces a semicolon separated list.
The XLS-format produces an MS Excel file.

Re: 7.6.04 developer studio indexes? / add / remove / delete

2011-04-05 Thread Easter, David
As per Doug's message:

What you need is a way to promote a definition from base to a custom object.

We actually have logic to do that promotion (we also have logic to move
something from custom to base but that is not really something you should be
needing to do unless you made a mistake in a promotion). Unfortunately, we did
not expose that operation in Dev Studio. This is an oversight that we plan to
correct in a future release. You would then be able to simply go into base
mode, select the object(s) to promote and promote them.

The good news is that since it is an API call and the driver program that is
supplied with all installs allows you to call the API call that does the work,
there is a way you can use driver to promote things from base to custom.

ARSList doesn't allow me to attach things from what I understand so I have
included the text of a driver script that shows the calls for each type of
object to promote it. You could create a simple file that loops across a list
of things and promotes them. Again, this is a workaround, but it closes the
gap in Dev Studio. It is not for everyone; but for those experienced with
using driver and needing a solution and willing to put in a little extra work
today, it is available.

So BPCU does not need to be used to convert a definition from base to custom.

 As per Doug's message:

What you need is a way to promote a definition from base to a custom
 object.

We actually have logic to do that promotion (we also have logic to move
something from custom to base but that is not really something you should be
needing to do unless you made a mistake in a promotion). Unfortunately, we
did not expose that operation in Dev Studio. This is an oversight that we
plan to correct in a future release. You would then be able to simply go
into base mode, select the object(s) to promote and promote them.

The good news is that since it is an API call and the driver program that
is supplied with all installs allows you to call the API call that does the
work, there is a way you can use driver to promote things from base to
 custom.

ARSList doesn't allow me to attach things from what I understand so I have
included the text of a driver script that shows the calls for each type of
object to promote it. You could create a simple file that loops across a
list of things and promotes them. Again, this is a workaround, but it
closes the gap in Dev Studio. It is not for everyone; but for those
experienced with using driver and needing a solution and willing to put in a
little extra work today, it is available.

So BPCU does not need to be used to convert a definition from base to
 custom.

That used to work on the Admin tool on character fields, but didn't work on
the early releases of the Dev Studio..

When I have trouble with default field height (radio button or character
field), I find it helpful to temporarily set the height to 2 lines, then set
it back to 1. That usually works.

I'm using 7.6.03. Like Andrew, I see this when I try to align and size
things similarly using the toolbar buttons. I haven't yet tried fiddling
with the other properties to see if it would pop back, though. I'll give
that a try.

Thanks,
Lyle

** I'm having the same issue on the selection field on DS 7.5. P004

This happen on selecting multiple fields then using the Align Left and
Size Label button from the menu bar.

To restore the hight on the selection fields, I have to change some of the
display properties on width, alignment...

What version of the studio are you on?

I used to have this problem on the very early versions of the Studio and
found it frustrating as well.. It was then later corrected on later
versions..

Hi All,

I'm having a problem with DS where when I modify the layout of a radio
button, it changes the height to 14 pixels, which cuts off the lower portion
of the radio button. The height property for the field is grayed out, so I
can't adjust it back to something reasonable. Has anyone else had this
problem? Any idea how to fix it?

Thanks,

Lyle Taylor

I do not recall seeing it on 7.6.03 but then I was working on that version for
a very short time before stepping up to 7.6.04. I’ll try it on 7.6.04 and let
you guys know if that problem still exists but I could swear it was fixed after
some of the initial patches of 7.5.
