Re: Overlays and Active Links

2014-12-30 Thread LJ LongWing
Mark,
An overlay is if you are modifying that object. If you are adding an
Active Link to a button, you are not modifying the form, view or button, so
none of them would need an overlay, and you would only need an Active Link
overlay if you were modifying an existing base level Active Link, which it
doesn't sound like you are doingso nono overlay needed.

Nope...BMC doesn't provide the form, so it wouldn't be able to be
overwrittenbut depending on your version that you are upgrading from
(lets propose some time in the future)...if you added your form as an
'additive' overlay to the application from 8.1 to say...8.5 (or whatever
the next version is), then you will still have your form in the application
even...but if that sort of granularity doesn't exist, then yes, you would
need to re-add your form to the application, but still, your form should be
in tact.

Hi Neha,

BMC has created Overlay concept to preserve customizations during version
upgrade. So now if you want to modify any OOTB functionality, just create the
overlay of existing object (right click object and choose create overlay).
Since during upgrade, installer will modify only base objects and overlay will
remain unchanged, so your customization will remain in the system.

For more details please refer BMC doc FormAppObj-7604.

 ** **

First, you can overlay many different things. In your situation, there
 are three that are significant:

 ** **

 Forms

 Views

 Fields

 ** **

The Form overlay covers the FORM PROPERTIES and is a container if you are
 trying to overlay something that

 the form contains.

 ** **

The View overlay covers the VIEW PROPERTIES and the DISPLAY PROPERTIES of
 fields.

 ** **

The Field overlay covers the FIELD PROPERTIES – everything about a field
that is not a display property.

 ** **

 ** **

In your case, you are overlaying a Form to cover a form property. This
does not overlay the view or any field

 on the form.

 ** **

When you upgrade, the form overlay is overlaying the form properties so if
there are changes to the form

properties (the default get list or indexes or something else like that),
your overlay will not pick it up. Note

that indexes are a special exception as they will really be there as they
are needed for base but otherwise, you

will not see the form properties.

 ** **

However, you have not overlaid the view or fields or anything else so all
 changes there will show through.

Any new fields or changed view or anything else will show through without
 issue…..

 ** **

 ** **

 ** **

Now, to go back to David's answer about views.

If you ADDITIONALLY added a new field for example as a new custom field to
 your form, you would then

overlay the view (needed to make that field visible) and create a custom
 field. On upgrade, your custom

field would be there and your overlaid view would remain in place. Any
change to the screen layout would

not show through (you would have to drop and recreate the view overlay and
 then add your custom field

back in). Any change to field properties other than display would come
through as you did not overlay the

 individual fields.

 ** **

And, as David noted, there may be a fix for the need to overlay the view
in a blocking way so that even display

properties for other fields would come through in a future release.

 ** **

 ** **

 ** **

So, for your situation, your form overlay and change to form properties
without overlaying view or field would

inherit all view/field changes of an upgrade. Only the form properties
 themselves are overlaid.

 ** **

 I hope this clarification helps,

When you upgrade, the form overlay is overlaying the form properties so if

In the BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.6.04: Form and Application

Overlays do not perform the following functions:

Re: Overlays and Original Forms (Easy Question)

2013-01-28 Thread Easter, David
It’s not so much the forms as it is the views…

In the 7.6.04 and 8.0.00 release, all fields in a form are added to the view
overlay and are editable when you created a view overlay. This behavior masks
even the base fields from any upgrades or hotfix. In other words, if you have
a view overlay and an additional field is added to the base form (either by BMC
or via a custom object), it currently does not “show through” into your view
overlay.

It is tentatively expected that the 8.1.00 release will address this issue.
This is one of the more commonly identified limitations of overlays when we
talk with developers/customers.

In the 7.6.04 and 8.0.00 release, all fields in a form are added to the
view overlay and are editable when you created a view overlay. This
behavior masks even the base fields from any upgrades or hotfix. In other
words, if you have a view overlay and an additional field is added to the
base form (either by BMC or via a custom object), it currently does not
“show through” into your view overlay.

It is tentatively expected that the 8.1.00 release will address this
issue. This is one of the more commonly identified limitations of overlays
 when we talk with developers/customers.

In the BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.6.04: Form and Application
Objects Guide, page 122, there is a section stating:

 ** **

“Overlays *do not *perform the following functions:”

“*Automatically merge customizations with functionality added during
upgrades*. For example, if a filter has three new actions in an upgraded
application, those actions will not automatically be added to the filter’s
existing overlay. Instead, you must identify the new actions by comparing
the overlay to the upgraded origin object and then add them to the overlay
if you decide to use them.”

 ** **

It is not clear if that same logic pertains to new fields added to a BMC
developed form. I do know that the Best Practice Conversion Utility (BPCU)
is the solution to identifying differences between existing and upgraded
objects, and this utility is used to convert changes into overlays and
 custom objects.

 We are using ARS 7.6.04

I have a simple change I would like to make to a form (turning on the
What's This feature by going to Properties/Menu Access/ and checking
help) I'm surprised that this feature isn't automatically turned on, but
I'm new to the OOB ITSM.

So I have to create an Overlay to the form to change this, no problem.

My question is, when we eventually upgrade to 8.0 this overlay will not be
touched (thus keeping my customization), but the original form below it
might change (like maybe a new field, etc).

Are these changes to the original form when upgraded, show up on the
 Overlay?

 Just trying to understand..

 Thanks!

Hi,

If you right-click on the form, you will be able to make an overlay on it
(if you are in Best Practice Mode).

After you open the form, you must also make an overlay on the field in

I don't think you need to overlay the view, as you are only changing a
database value and not a display value associated with the view.

Re: Overlays??

2012-10-25 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
First of all you must be on 7.6.04 and not just 7.6 as the last version of the
ARS that did not have overlays was 7.6.03.

So if you are on 7.6.04, your Dev Studio defaults to the Best Practices mode.
In this mode, which is recommended to stay on to leverage the use of overlays,
yes you need to overlay the form as Misi described by right clicking on the
form from the form list and creating an overlay.. Since you need to move the
summary field, you would need to overlay the view as well. On opening up the
form, one of the menu options – I do not recall at the top of my head, allows
you to do just that.. Then you need to right click on every field that you need
to modify, and overlay that field..

Then you are all set to modify the fields that you want to after you have 1)
overlaid the form, 2) overlaid the view and 3) overlaid the fields..

IF HOWEVER, for whatever good reason your company does not want to leverage the
use of overlays (which is not recommended as you would loose what is quite a
strong feature now with many of the wrinkles ironed out if you are on Patch 3
or above on 7.6.04), then you do not have to use the Best Practices mode.. You
can switch your Dev Studio to Base Development mode, and work with the
application like you always had before.. Again this is not a recommended way of
doing things going forward from 7.6.04.. But it is still an option...

In the Base Development mode, the modification will be done at the underlying
layer and will not create an overlay layer. So your upgrades will continue to
be cumbersome as they always have been so far. Solving this cumbersome process
on upgrades is what the concept of overlays has resolved – or attempted to
resolve – quite successfully actually..

Hope this helps..

Cheers

Joe

Hi,

I know this is very basic, however please confirm the ITSM version that you
are running. To check the same, open the user Tool and Open form

This will tell you whether it is 7.6 or 7.6.04

if it 7.6.04, you can able to create overlay for HPD:Help Desk form and do
the modification in best Practice Customization Mode.

However if it is 7.6, I would advise you to take backup of HPD:Help Desk

Re: Overlays??

2012-10-25 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
Vaibhav,

You must be a little mixed up on the whole version deal.. The version of the
ITSM application has nothing to do with the Overlays feature.. It’s a AR System
Server 7.6.04 feature accessed through the Dev Studio of the same version.. It
does not matter if you are on pre ITSM 7.6.04, as long as you have your AR
System engine upgraded to 7.6.04, you can start leveraging the use of Overlays.

The SHARE:Application_Properties form is along good for telling versions of
various applications installed in the AR System. What you need to be checking
is the AR System Server Information form for the version of the AR System..

In short, Overlays were introduced with the AR System as a feature of the AR
System 7.6.04 which can be leveraged only when using the Dev Studio 7.6.04 – it
is not a feature of the ITSM suite..

Short answer no..

Overlays are just an extension to what used to be done in the past – disable
OTB workflow and create a new object to replace that..

Overlays tell the ARS to ignore the overlaid object, and use the overlay
instead.

There is no current function advanced or otherwise that would tell workflow to
recall the overlaid object as an exception on a particular condition..

Liabt,

I recall finding an option that will put your entire server in ‘base’ mode, and
ignore all overlay/custom objects…but nothing that puts a single user in that
mode. (Overlay-mode)

Hi,

Is there a way to stop overlays from triggering in our Change Management system
during a request of one particular service (i.e. Facilities) without affecting
other parts of the CM application?

It could also be used for a system that is completely custom (and therefore

Joe,

No. There is a server-wide setting that tells the server to ignore all
overlays and only use the base objects. However, as mentioned, it therefore
affects every user and every operation – so it cannot be used to do what the
original requestor was asking for.

The option was put in place for two primary use cases:

1. A developer wants to see how all the base objects / functionality work
together without any customizations / extensions (i.e. without any overlays).

2. A developer has added customizations and extensions that have caused
the entire system to become unstable. The developer can choose to turn off all
overlays and use the system OOTB - without having to restore a DB backup -
until the overlay issues can be addressed.

One of the features touted in the new arsystem 7.6.03 was the
introduction of Overlays. I see no reference to it in the
documentation. If this made it into release, how does this work?
Anyone know?

nope. from the beta announcement...

Overlays
- Enforces best practice development within Developer Studio
- Preserves customizations during upgrade of AR System powered
applications
- Benefit: Protects business investment in customizations

I like the concept, but I'm not seeing any other info on it in the
released docs.
