Dan,
I apologize for my reaction.
The ugliness got the best of me, frustration took over, hence my post.
I agree about the JSRM issue. It's vital to our community. I just couldn't see

Quite the contrary Jack. And let me first say I meant nothing personal

Now why do I say contrary? Because in the last couple of days we dealt

attempted to preach how we were amiss in our position on the issue,
but then made an unprovoked, and totally inappropriate member of this

tirade. Neither did we loose focus why many of us opposed JSRM. That
was the best example that could be shown to any outsider. And BTW, I
feel no obligation shave the truth for anyone, inside of AP or out.

[AsburyPark] Do what belmar did

2007-10-19 Thread oakdorf
1. Go after the landlords for actions of their tenants
(which I think is a stretch)
 - Park a police car (loaded - guns, dogs, vests, lights) in front of
known problem areas - day after day, night after night.

2. see belmarrentals411.com - and their map.
http://www.belmar.com/rentals/Map.asp

3. Then go back, how many problems are at Housing Authority units?

Then face the facts - you have a great new (yes, great and new)
effort going up AND you have a West Side (mostly) that is in deep,
deep, trouble.

So forget what the partners did or didn't do or whose gay or the
bullshit fighting amongst council members you know why - cause it's
all bullshit.

The Police Department needs help. The schools need help. Take some of
themoney the school gets and give it the police department. Bring in
other towns to assist.

Time to take control.

Like I said.

It's IRAQ in AP.

Time to bring in troops and some bulldozer and rebuild.

Take a few hundred million that's getting tossed out over there and
pokceted and toss it here and let some stuff get done and let some
money get stolen. How muych worse can it be?

AS for the cameras, the city should just rent some big seach lights
and stick on Springwood, in front of hinges, down bangs and drive
around with them on.

A start.

Otherwise, you'll have channel 2 here doing a story with their
cameras on a stalled development and springsteen will be writing a
new song.

Bring in the tanks.

[AsburyPark] AP, shootings, and the Asbury Park Press

2007-10-19 Thread Jack Pitzer
I'm wondering about something.
Last week, shots were fired at 2 kids, 8 bullet casings were found, and this
was a minor story
in the APP.
On Saturday, somebody was shot during a robbery attempt, and this story only
made it into
the police blotter.
Last night, we have a murder, and that story is only under News Update, it's
already far
enough down the list so you can't see it, and the headline story is about a
homeless camp in
Pt. Beach.
I used to get upset when I read all the story chat postings about crimes in AP.
Now, I think we need the bad publicity to get this city to make an aggressive
stance about it.

Oh yeah, how much money did we spend on horses for weekend use?

[AsburyPark] Ballot Question #3

2007-10-19 Thread kerry butch
PRESS RELEASE

  For Immediate Release:

  Contact:
  October 18, 2007
Jeff Tittel, Sierra Club, 609-558-9100
Dave Pringle, NJ Environment Federation, 732-996-4288
Joanna Wolaver, NJ Audubon Society, 609-712-3622
Alison Mitchell, NJ Conservation Foundation, 908-234-1225
Ed Wengryn, NJ Farm Bureau, 609-393-7163

Open Space Advocates Expose Falsehoods about Question #3,
Condemn Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan’s Radio Ads

Trenton , NJ - The passage of Ballot Question #3 is the most important issue
facing the voters in this year’s election. Without Question #3, we will run
out of money to preserve open space, farmland and historic properties, build
new parks and playgrounds for our children, and voluntarily buy out flood-prone
properties. Despite the important of this issue for the future of New Jersey ,
there are those who will distort, and even lie, about this ballot question. We
are all here today to set the record straight on Ballot Question #3 and what it
means for New Jersey .

The Keep It Green coalition has learned that Bogota , New Jersey , Mayor
Steve Lonegan and “Americans for Prosperity” are campaigning against question
#3, the $200 million open space, farmland and historic preservation question on
this November’s ballot.

“Halloween has come early. Steve Lonegan is trying to trick the voters with
deliberate lies and falsehoods,” said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey
Sierra Club. “The only thing that’s scarier than Steve Lonegan’s lies is New
Jersey losing its open space and farmland programs.”

The advocates released a fact sheet (attached) exposing and debunking the
myths and untruths Lonegan has been spreading about question #3 including that
it will increase taxes, bring high density housing to New Jersey towns, and
force homeowners to lose their property to eminent domain. In fact, a yes vote
on #3 will prevent overdevelopment, save our threatened open spaces and
farmland, and create playgrounds, green spaces and urban parks for our
children. It in no way will authorize the use of eminent domain by the state
taxes – on the contrary, the state legislature has specifically prohibited use
of funds that will be made available from the approval of question # 3 for
eminent domain by the state.

“The GSPT has been recognized as not only the largest land preservation
program in the nation but also the most successful,” said Assemblyman John F.
McKeon, a primary bill sponsor. “Supporting Ballot question #3 will ensure
that New Jersey ’s land preservation efforts will continue uninterrupted. The
Blue Acres component allows willing sellers to voluntarily sell their
properties for permanent preservation while avoiding future insurance costs and
economic hardships. Anyone claiming the contrary is irresponsible and typical
of the extreme right wing antics.”

“Lonegan’s ads and statements are uninformed at best and knowingly false at
worst,” said David Pringle of the NJ Environmental Federation. “While that
might work in a state less educated, less environmental conscious, and filled
with more ideological zealots than New Jersey, someone positioning himself to
run for Governor should know better, but perhaps his thoughts are elsewhere.”

“To say a yes vote on question #3 is a vote for eminent domain is nothing
more than a cheap scare tactic. The history of the state preservation programs
demonstrates that the state as the buyer is providing fair value to willing
sellers. The passage of public question #3 will ensure that those market-based
and fair transactions can continue,” said Ed Wengryn of New Jersey Farm Bureau.

“We've already seen the tremendous benefits these preservation programs bring
to New Jersey 's environment and its people, including tax stabilization. So we
don't need to worry about what will happen if we pass Question # 3 - we need to
worry about what will happen if we don't,” said Alison Mitchell of New Jersey
Conservation Foundation.

New Jersey loses over 40 acres each day to development making our remaining
open spaces a precious asset. We must protect and preserve our remaining
natural and historic resources to insure future generations can enjoy a high
quality of life. I am confident that voters will overwhelmingly approve this
question, just as they have approved similar measures dating back to 1961,”
said State Senator Leonard Lance.

Ballot question #3 is critical to providing much needed funding to the
Garden State Preservation Trust, which helps to preserve our farms, open space,
and historic landmarks, said Assemblyman Douglas H. Fisher. I ask the voters
of New Jersey to vote yes on Ballot questions #3 to keep this highly successful
programs running to ensure our land and history are permanently preserved.

A yes vote on Ballot Question 3 is a clear no-brainer, said Doug O'Malley,
Environment New Jersey 's Field

[AsburyPark] The value of forums

2007-10-19 Thread dfsavgny
From

Local Cities, Global Problems: Jane Jacobs in an Age of Global Change

But the influence of communication technology is beginning to have an
impact at the neighborhood scale as well. Jacobs wrote that word does
not move around where public characters and sidewalk life are
lacking. Now it does. There are the people paused at the top of the
subway stairs, occupying two spaces at once, one physical, one
virtual. And in neighborhoods around the country—this one in
particular—community online message boards and blogs are thriving,
entirely in parallel with news passed stoop to stoop.

The in parallel part is crucial. Outside. In, a website designed to
gather and organize neighborhood news, published a list of America's
Top 10 Bloggiest Neighborhoods. What was striking (but perhaps not
surprising) is that all were living examples of the kind of places
Jacobs championed: Clinton Hill in Brooklyn, Portrero Hill in San
Francisco, Shaw in Washington. If the physical form of a neighborhood
is conducive to community, so is its virtual form. But the other
striking thing about the list was that all the neighborhoods were in a
state of change—gentrifying or recently gentrified. It's certainly
demographic: a neat and obvious alignment of hipster and blogger. But
it also means that the newly emerging character of these places is
being forged, at least in part, online. These are incontrovertibly
real-world neighborhoods, but their community is as virtual as it is
physical. With each year, we get better at navigating between the two.

The police dept. does need help.
I'm going to redescribe the results of my phone call the other night when I
called about
the kids smoking pot in the park;

1) Me - I call the PD and make the report
2) Me - I call a few minutes later to find out what happened. The PD said they
found
nothing and let them go. I expressed concern that one of them looked me
directly in the
eye. Dispatcher pretty much blows it off and says I have nothing to worry
about, we know
who these three are. They don't ask me for any personal information. Is that
how a PD is
supposed to operate? I don't think so.
3) Next day, on a bike ride. Same three kids in CH smoking pot. One of them
stares me
down on the north side of CH

Does anybody else see a problem with this.
Now, when you smoke pot, you reek. I called the PD about a minute after
encountering the
kids. They had to reek. Did the PD even make a complete search of the 3 kids. I
sincerely
doubt it, because they were gone from the scene pretty quickly.
Conclusion - The kids have no fear of getting busted, and the PD let them go.
And I have
to live with the knowledge that the kids know who I am, but the PD doesn't even
know my
name.
That sounds like a major problem to me. I'm fed up.

[AsburyPark] Last Night's BOE meeting

2007-10-19 Thread asburycheech
Dear Group Members,

This is a report on the Asbury Park School Board meeting of Thursday,
October 18. As only one member of the BOE, I am obliged to say that I
do not speak for the board.

As meetings go, this one was relatively short (7 to 9:10 PM) and
almost rancor-free! The public was given the opportunity to speak on
agenda items, and no member of the public came forward at that time.
The administrators responsible for curriculum gave us a 20 minute
presentation on the testing results for the district. Overall, the
results did show a slight improvement in some grades, a substantial
increase in others, and flat or even a small decrease in isolated
cases. There was enough of an improvement, believe it or not, for the
state to say that we have met A.Y.P, that is adequate yearly
progress for the first time in many years. Of course, what is
adequate progress for the state is just rising from the depths that we
had plumbed. But it is progress nevertheless, and it must be built
upon. Donna Muzzicato, the new director of curriculum, gave us a
presentation on what each school in the district is doing to correct
past deficiencies and to improve instruction. (In my view, improving
instruction and increasing test scores are not necessarily synonymous,
and we are off to the best year in a long time in all of our schools,
especially the Intermediate School and the High School. But we have a
long, long way to go.)

Mrs. Sanders and I did get into a bit of a tussle in reference to the
new Math Program for grades 3, 4, and 5. She regretted our disposal
of Communicator Math and I cheered the fact that it was gone and
replaced with a more traditional program, namely McGraw-Hill.
Communicator Math is now used fully in only one other district in
New Jersey, namely Jersey City, the home of the originator of the
program, a favorite with the State.

When the time came for the public to speak on non-agenda items, four
members of the public came forward. One said that not all teachers
had received materials and books yet. Mr. Parham, the Acting
Superintendent, said that he personally would see to it that the
situation was remedied the following day. The other comments
pertained to the Little League, which our closed session was to be
about, and others asked us to set a date for a community forum on the
QSAC report and to improve communication with the public via a newsletter.

Our closed session lasted about 20 minutes and when we returned, voted
to give the Little League the green light to go ahead with their
second phase, pending resolution of typical Asbury Park deed
restrictions and submission of a site plan that has already been
prepared. Danny McKee and the rest of the parents and friends (and
the kids, of course) of the newly revived Asbury Park Little League
should be commended for working so hard and jumping though all the
bureaucratic hoops presented to them. Their determination in this
often-frustrating place is very admirable.

When it came time for comments from the Board, I expressed my dismay
at the firing of the woman who had done so much to put the SPOT
program (our school based youth services program at the high school)
in such good shape last year. She was summarily fired by the outside
agency that the State of New Jersey forced us to outsource the program
to. They had said our kids would lose those services at the High
School unless we handed the program, which was finally going very
well, over to an outside agency to run inside the high school. Some
board members, including myself, voted to do so when that agency said
they would retain the woman who had run it so well. With no warning
at all, she was fired this month. I would hate to think that this was
a bait and switch tactic to get approval, fire the director, and
then replace her almost immediately. We do not treat our own employees
in this manner, and we expected, perhaps naively, that no one running
a school program for our kids in our high school would treat their
employees so abruptly and without any due process whatsoever. Some of
the BOE members asked our administrators to look into the situation
and report back to us.

Frank D'Alessandro

[AsburyPark] Re: group

2007-10-19 Thread Jack Pitzer
Thanks Sharon!
I have a feeling that proper lighting would solve the problem in Library Square
Park in a
hurry. It's not so much that it's overrun with drug users, but there is
definitely something
bad going on there on almost a nightly basis now. The main reason I'm aware of
it is
because I walk my dog there virtually every morning, and every morning the
fountain area
has new empty drug bags and new empty liquor bottles, and now people are using
the
damaged fountain as a garbage dump. I hate it, and I'm sick of it. The park is
for
everybody. But nobody wants to walk around in a mess, and children should not
be
exposed to what goes on there. I can imagine a little kid picking up one of
those drug
bags and wondering what's this?
The problem isn't just partial to the fountain area, it's also in the
surrounding shubbery
and trees. I've seen used condoms, condom wrappers, human excrement. I've seen
people
peeing there after dark too. And the litter problem just makes me want to cry.
I will never
be able to understand the mentality of people who think the world is their
garbage can.
Another thing I've been noticing increasingly is that people seem to think that
the fountain
is their ashtray as well. It disgusts me.
For contrast, I like to walk my dog in the park in Ocean Grove on the other
side of the
footbridge. There's a very similar fountain there that has been transformed
into a beautiful
garden display. It's well lit at night, and that park is always much cleaner.
One thing that bothers me is that the PD either knows that the park is dark at
night and is
dragging their feet about it, or they are unaware of the problem, which would
shock me
because I know people call in when they spot trouble.
There seems to be some kind of disconnect in our city about where the PD is
patrolling at
night. I've mentioned this before concerning The Met Hotel porch. If you were
to take a
look there right now, you'd see lot's of empty beer cases, beer cans, cloths
etc. Obviously
somebody has been partying there at night.
I've also been in touch with the Asbury Park Historical Society, and they are
trying to get
somebody from JCPL to fix the lights, and somehow that's taking a long time as
well.
And let's not forget, the APHS got donations to fix the fountain, install
sprinkers etc.
Wouldn't it be a good idea for the city to have done something to protect that
investment
of peoples donation money? Unfortunately, nothing was done, the fountain is a
mess, and
the vandalism continues, as recently as last week.
I also think that the destruction of the 3 globes on the top of the fountain
may have been
done by kids who were told to do so by local drug dealers. It's to the drug
dealers benefit
to have the park dark at night. And it light of recent arrests that showed that
west side
heroin dealers were using young children to sell drugs, it's pretty obvious
that this is
entirely possible.

I wasn't so much for it, until you suggested where! I believe certain
common areas should ALWAYS be surveilled, such as the park, Cookman
Ave., certain streets and corners, where crime often occurs, such as
the Sheffield Grocery and Ridge and Bangs Ave. It's a sad way to
live, but if the park is overun with drug users, the authorities
should set 'em up! Where's the UEZ money? This is a quality of

 push the issue of
surveillence cameras. I really care about public perception (from
 outsiders) about this city.
I may still go ahead with creating a more efficient city message
 board as i've previously
discussed, with it's own domain name. Obviously, there are some
 people here which will
have absolutely no interest in checking it out because they think it
 will be restrictive. I'd
just like it to be a cordial place. A good example is the political
 group I created. There has
been no need for moderation there at all, and there's been some
 great, heated
discussions. The difference between that group and this one is that
 people make an effort
to keep it a functional place to hold discussions without making
 ugly, personal attacks.

This is exactly what I've been talking about concerning the surveillence system.
We now have another dead young man in our city.
The surveillence system has been in discussion for a few months now.
In Newark, it took the execution of three students for them to wake up.
Wake up AP. Until you do, all the redevelopment in the world won't attract new
people to
our city.

She called me around 10:40 to say she just heard gunshots someone screaming and
then the sirens. Another friend confirmed it this morning. It's getting
really ridiculous something truly has to be done. The other problem is that
it's not just happening in AP. Gang violence is happening all over. We the
older generation are afraid to stand up to it. We will make our comment to
others and via emails but no one is willing to stand up and fight as it may put
themselves or their families in harms way (for which I can't blame anyone for
not doing) but we will soon have to stand up to these idiots who have no value
for life or else we will have to go into hiding until our knight in shining
armor rescues us.

[AsburyPark] Open Space Bill Rigged

2007-10-19 Thread jerseykev

TRENTON — The coalition pushing voters to approve the state borrowing $200
million to preserve land in the state said yesterday that recent ads railing
against the ballot question were deliberate lies and vicious, false
attacks.
The Keep it Green Campaign, made up of 90 pro-preservation organizations,
looked to debunk claims made by Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan in recent ads and
columns saying the program would take property from homeowners unwillingly,
replace single-family home construction with high density housing and raise
taxes.
While the funding would have the state add more debt, Jeff Tittel, director
of the state chapter of the Sierra Club, said local towns looking to buy land t
o preserve rely on state money for reimbursement.
Without the state match, local property taxes would have to go up higher to
buy those pieces of open space those towns want to buy, said Tittel.
After learning of the coalition's statements, Lonegan responded, To say that
it won't raise taxes is an insult to the taxpayers of the state.
The state's at a breaking point, we can't afford any of this nonsense
anymore, said Lonegan, who lost a bid for the Republican nomination for
governor
in 2005 and now heads the state chapter of Americans for Prosperity. . . .
When it comes to land use, we have to let the free market decide and not the
government, not the planners of Trenton.
If approved, the measure provides stopgap funding for one year of purchases,
state fiscal year 2009, which begins next July. It would provide $109 million
for open space, $73 million for farmland preservation, $12 million to buy
flood-prone areas and $6 million for historic site preservation. The state,
which the group says loses 40 acres per day to development, has about $170
million left to last until then. The Legislature is expected to look for a
longer
source of funding in the upcoming lame-duck session.

I was thinking exactly the same thing when I opened your post. What
we lack, first and foremost, is a vision for improving the

where's the overall vision for solving it? And where is a leader ian
