Im talking about improvement since the last time I came down in the summer. You and others seem to be stuck in this nostalgic - its better then it was- routine. Cant you see things from another perspective. There should be HUGE improvement since Memorial Day. Hell they missed that mark and then said it would all be done by Labor Day. As bad as the unfinished condos and construction sites look, most of them are inland. You see a construction site surrounded by asphalt streets or sidewalks, there is a level of continuity and logic to it. You can work around it. However, the site of a rusting stone and steel foundation for a demolished building has a starker and more jarring visual effect on sand, next to the ocean. Particularly when you want people to feel comfortable recreating on that sand with their friends and family. Does a parent want their kid building sand castles if there's a possibility a tetanus- inducing rusty nail or pipe could be in that sand? Are people going to want to play volleyball or frisbee, which often involves diving full-body into the sand, if they think they might land on a nail or broken glass? Whether everything has been done to clean the beach or not, impressions matter. This goes for the north end of Ocean Grove as well. They have to deal with that mess on some level too. The beach is your number one draw in summer. Live music is number two. Fix that Casino, and you kill two birds with one stone. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Support Asbury Park's Budding Actors - Tonight in Manasquan
If you haven't seen the 11th and 12 graders from APHS in the first play produced at APHS in 10 years, you have one more opportunity tonight at the Algonquin Arts Center in Manasquan, at 7 pm. I saw the show Friday night and it was amazing! These kids are like seasoned actors - not one flubbed a line that I could tell. And they are so into doing this. I asked one boy what it was like doing his role and he said it was really tough playing a student still high from smoking pot the night before. He said he'd never taken any of that stuff, so he had to work hard to really think about how he should act, to slur his words and act goofy, to be believeable. He did a pratfall in the opening act that was worthy of Jerry Lewis. You can see a cast picture and hear them introduce themselves at AsburyRadio.com. Hope you catch it tonight. [AsburyPark] Re: Friday night at Watermark then Sellas...
Followed your lead Oak and went to both places last night. Let me say that Asbury Park's boardwalk is fast becoming better than it ever was, at any time in its history. Credit Mottola and Fishman's LLC. Disclaimer: If the high-end retail draws a crowd, that is. Time will tell. It was my idea to go that way in triCity years before AP heard the name Mottola, so I'm rooting for it. If high retail doesn't work, at the very least the old is being taken out of the buildings, which was sorely needed. Slowly but surely, Asbury Park is shedding its Art-Wrecko beachfront archetecture. Watermark was great. I felt as though I was walking into a NYC establishment with an Ocean View. Finally, the City really is meeting the Sea. No longer just a slogan. So comfortable. Music was low enough that we could talk without raising our voices. Really felt like we were sitting in a living room. Only knock was the 15 minutes it took to bring us our drinks - two were pop-opens. There was only two other sets of customeers so they weren't busy. Chalk it up to opening pains. Will go back. Stella Marina is beautifully appointed. Very pretty. One complaint though - the food was small. Maybe that's an Italian thing. We feed people until they can't take it anymore, then we fill thier plate againl. A guy named Mottola should know better. I don't rule the world though, so maybe others don't mind small food and it will be OK. After all, I'm fat. I ordered a supersata appatizer. $8 gave me 6 see-through slices cut with a razor blade. I usually put more than that on one cracker. Next time bring me a big hunk of meat and a knife. I had escorole (pronounce 'shcadawl')and beans soup. Taste was second best in the world next to my mothers. It had a nice spicey kick. Loved it. Again though - not enough spoonfuls. Made a peanut butter sandwich when I came home. Few weeks ago we tried Pop's Garage! LOVED IT. GREAT TASTING MEXICAN FOOD AND MARILYN FILLED ME UP (no small task). Can't wait to try Langosta. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Quick note: Watermark very neat upstairs. Gret fireplace anc chairs. So, based on EXPERIENCE, I comment that yes, the boardwalk is better. Werner has seen it from his time period here. I've seen it from pre- werner as well as have others. There's words you are not supposed to use in advertising, - ultimate (ultimatetest...), new and improved (newer and more improved..), more ultimate then before, The Boardwalk is better. It's a phrase that can always be used. Better then 1970? Better then 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005? Yes, at least from what I recall. I don't know if it was better then 1900, or 1940. From what I read, probably not. But it's a phrase. My son is 15 now. To him, it's better and same for my daughter. It's better. Are the lights bright? Yes. CH is open, has events, stores etc. Maybe not hundreds of events etc - but, it's open, the city isn't paying for it, people come there, it feels pretty safe and looks the best I've ever seen it growing up here, from what I can remember. [AsburyPark] Why I love Asbury Park
I live in North Jersey in a nice, suburban town with fine neighbors and good schools and programs for my kids. On the weekends though I am BORED out of my mind with the same suburban tedium. So I bought a condo in Asbury Park mostly, I thought, so the kids could enjoy the ocean in the summer. Last weekend my wife and I came down to see the Yes show. We had dinner at Langosta which was outstanding (only its third day)...the food was great and we met some interesting people at the table next to us. We then went to the Paramount-one of the best sounding theaters in the world- to hear the show. Afterwards, we walked home while traffic cops dealt with the crowds and all the cars...the place was really alive The next morning we walked for a few miles on the boardwalk and had breakfast in Ocean Grove. Back to the condo and then back to North Jersey. We spent a total of 20 hours in AP and it made my whole week! I think I may actually spend as much time in AP in the off season as during the summer...even better that the kids dont want to come when its cold...wink...wink. Whoever has said that entertainment is the key for AP is right on the money as far as I am concerned...thank you Live Nation. Cant wait for the next show so I can try another restaurant... Yahoo! [AsburyPark] The Auto Industry and AP...
Read it for the fun of it. You don't realize all the showrooms that were once in AP. But read this one. Money is only loaned to a man, William Crapo Durant once said. He comes into the world with nothing and he leaves with nothing. Billy Durant came into the world in Boston with not even a loan. Raised in Flint, Mich., he quit school at 17. By selling patent medicine, cigars, insurance and borrowing from friends, he scraped up enough to join a fellow clerk in buying out a carriage factory for $2,000. Through his prodigious energy and salesmanship (he could coax a bird out of a tree) the company acquired 14 plants by 1904. Durant's Blue Ribbon carriages became the Fords of a horse-drawn world. The company overinvested in bicycles, lost out. Unperturbed, Durant got control of the tottering Flint Wagon Works, sold $10,000,000 worth of stock to exploit its rights to manufacture a horseless carriage, designed by David Buick. He made millions in a few years, laid grandiose plans to take over the lusty young auto industry. He almost did, by merging five companiesHenry Ford was the most important holdoutinto General Motors. In the panic of 1910 Durant lost control of G.M. Unfazed, he started manufacturing a car called the Chevrolet. Quietly he bought back 40% of G.M.'s stock (with the help of the Du Ponts) and walked into a G.M. board meeting with his pockets bulging with stock certificates. Imperiously he announced: Gentlemen, I control this company. As Walter P. Chrysler later said: It was like Napoleon's return from Elba. In the post-World War I slump, G.M. stock slipped from $400 to $12. Durant spent an estimated $90,000,000 trying to bolster it before he finally lost control of G.M. for good. He founded Durant Motors, aiming to start a new G.M. But this time it was no go. He piled up another fortune by playing the stockmarket, but the 1929 crash virtually wiped him out. Later, he went into bankruptcy, listing $250 (the clothes on his back) as his only assets. He still had his chipper spirits. But his Midas touch was gone. In 1936 he turned up in Asbury Park, N.J. as a lunchroom and supermarket owner. He plugged a dandruff cure on the side, operated a bowling alley in Flint. He still talked grandly of making a pile. But it was too late. Last week, in his eight-room apartment in Manhattan, Billy Durant, 85, died. Of the millions he had been loaned he left nothing. March 1947 Yahoo! Jack you are confusing me. When I posted last weeks that general foreclosure stuff isn't relevant to AP, I was resoundingly rebuffed. It was made clear that anything foreclosure is AP related. I think 2 people even pointed out that 80 are taking place in AP right now. So if you do object to general foreclosure stuff as AP related, I have to wonder why you didn't disagree with those folks last week or invite them to your other site. If, on the other hand, this is once again just you holding me to a different standard than others, then Jack, please, STFU. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Why are you trying to start yet another post that has nothing to do with AP? [AsburyPark] Re: New One
Instead of us all getting into another distracting argument, can't we look at this another way. First off, I joined this group to read about AP. It's history, what's going on in the city, redevelopment progress, Cookman, activity on the west side, etc. For awhile now, the group has gotten off that track, and often, the detour involves much arguing and name calling. I'm not pointing my finger at any one person, but it's pretty easy to exercise self control when posting, and we all know each other pretty well. That being said, please, let's all stop fighting, me included, and let's let this group be about AP. If it keeps getting endlessly sidetracked, I'll just take a vacation from it, like I have before. Maybe I'm the problem... --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh look, the king of pointing out personalizing is now telling me to STFU. Nice. Long before James A. Bradley was even born, Cobblers were crafting shoes and boots for communities when the family of the Cobbler walked barefoot or in less than comfortable footwear. Werner has a personal situation, exacerbated by personal and offical attacks, yet still shares his wisdom for the greater good of the city. Let us recall that those attacks have cost Werner money and esteem. I ask all of you to put yourselves in Werner's shoes and think again. How many of us have actually been forced into a corner without a resource but are still willing to share our knowledge. Not me, well, maybe, I have learned from a great teacher. With a few exceptions that I am aware of, many of Werner's critics on this forum have never met Werner. I have. Werner could win the majority of debates and if he lost, would conceded with grandeur. My best advice to all of you is that if you choose to attack, make certain that your know your opponent well. That man in the scary house might actualy be the guy watching your back! As we watch the economy bundgy jumping, we must realize that any one of us may face the budget that Werner deals with daily. Would any of YOU be willing to take time away from your own situation to attempt to better the situation of those around you? Would you? This is just my opinion, but please try to think out of the box.
