A $1000 bet yesterday would have returned enough today to go out on a date for

Yeah, I saw that guy too. He definitely looked shaken up. I advise people to
tell their friends and families not to park on that stretch of Bergh,
especially at night.

and had come out for the day from NYC.

They really need to step up patrols and get some cameras on that block.

The car jacking last week took place on Bergh right across the street from
me, on the block between AP Ave and 1st. There hasn't been a working street
light there in years, and there's been quite a few cars broken into.
A neighbor two doors away recently installed a 5 camera video surveillance
system and it caught the car jacking in detail, and the video was used by
the APPD to help apprehend one of the two suspects involved. The person who
got away was the spotter who was in another car.

What I am getting at I guess is that knowing our neighbors is important,
keeping in constant contact is important, these community watch meetings

One thing to watch for, its a known technique among AP's resident
thieves...they work in groups of 2 or 3, 1 rides a bike and is the
spotter, the others are the thieves breaking into the homes. The spotter
will ride up and down the street keeping a lookout, while on his cell

Subject: [AsburyPark] Neighborhood watch - we call the police

I moved to the northwest section of AP 3 months ago, and I love living
here. What's upsetting lately, though, is the increase of burglaries
   taking place in our neighborhood.

Two weeks ago, my next door neighbor's house was burglarized. The thieves
stole their new washer/dryer, dishwasher, and tried to take the stove but
it wouldn't fit through the door. I was away for the weekend and the
neigbhor's primary residence is in Manhattan. No one saw a thing, or at
least -- no one called police. The contractors working on the house
   discovered the burglary Monday morning.

Last night, I was out on my deck with 2 friends, and 2 men entered the
(same) neighbor's backyard and walked up to the back door as if they
lived there. As I called the police, my friend said to them, Excuse me,
sir? What are you doing there? You don't live there. One of the men
said, I'm checking on it for them... I'm checking the door... I work for
the City... Police arrived within minutes and spoke to the 2 men, who
supposedly live on Prospect behind me. I do not know the outcome of
their conversation, but believe me -- my neighbors did not ask these two
   to check on the house.

So the moral of the store is: if something doesn't look right, it
probably isn't. CALL THE POLICE. The increased presence will hopefully
get the message across to would-be burglars...

[AsburyPark] Two more shootings last night

2011-08-09 Thread Hinge
ASBURY PARK — Two city men are in a hospital in critical but stable condition
following surgery after being shot Monday night, prosecutors said.

A city police officer was flagged down around 7:54 p.m. in the 500 block of
Prospect Avenue, where he found 22-year-old Kaeshon McMillian, of the city,
with a gunshot wound, according to Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor
Christopher Decker.

McMillian was taken to an area hospital, where he is listed in critical but
stable condition following surgery Monday, Decker said.

A second man, identified as Jamar Moore, 19, of the city, arrived at a local
hospital with a gunshot wound around 7:56 p.m. on Monday and was also taken
into surgery for his wounds, Decker added. He too was listed in critical but
stable condition after surgery.

At this point it is not clear if these two incidents are related, but we do
believe both incidents occurred in the city, Decker said.

Both shootings are being investigated by detectives from the prosecutor's
office and city police department.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call Detective Michael
Clancy, of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, at 800-533-7443 or city
Detective Gabe Carrasquillo

The only problem I had last night in AP was almost getting run down crossing
Ocean Ave when some guy on a red vespa came whipping around the Empress onto
ocean ave...

As I overheard one cop tell someone - watch yourselves, stay in well lit areas
and if you don't have to go to Long Branch or Asbury, then don't, cause it's
out of control.

I just brought my firearms to my house this past Sunday from my mothers

Another house was robbed by me while the residents were home over the weekend,
around 5pm it took place, I am not risking a thug coming into my home and
hurting my fiance or animals.

I've been contemplating applying for a concealed weapons permit

You should have gotten the cops name and badge number and then he should be
fired for telling people to stay out of AP. Patrol the areas. There will always
plenty of trouble in urban areas no matter how hip. This am in Brooklyn through
a very hip area with a public housing project I saw the police tape and bullet
markers where there was a shooting I assume last night. Folks raised in suburbs
don't know how to walk in an urban environment. Walking to our cars Sat night
parked on Asbury just west of Kingsley in dark and near bushes, I make daughter
and wife walk in front of me towards curb as I walk behind constantly looking
around.

The 2009 is the last of the 2-stroke engines (oil/gas mix) which is why I go

scooters in brielle on 35 south. I didnt get it from them . They didnt want to
deal. The msrp is like 3599 then you get hit with prep, tax etc. I got for 3700

his 2005 fireball special for 2500 obo. Limited edition #137 out of 150 ever
made.

here's a craigslist for a 2005 for 1800

Its hand shift and clutch you know?

Actually a real good deal and faster than the Stella (150 cc) is a group member

2011-08-09 Thread dfsavgny

I have a gtv 250 too. The GTS and GTV are same mechanically and the new 300's
have a tad more low end torque. They are twist and go and 100 lbs more than
Stella. Steall will do 60 on flat and rides on 10 inch tires. The GTS/GTV will
do almost 80 (I cruise on highway at 70+ all day) and have 12 tires. The
bigger wheels have more stability.

The GTV/GTS are better machines no doubt. I just wanted one of the last 2
stroke stellas. There are other scooters but I am a vespa head. The body
(steel) is the chassis. None other has it (or the style). So I have a 2009 GTV
250, a 2009 Stella (a Vespa PX) and a 1964 Vespa VBB. Plus a 2009 Aprilia Mana
850, 1975 BMW R75/6 and a 1984 Moto Guzzi LeMans Mk3. Its a sickness.

And stay in well lit, busy areas! More cars and people the better. Walk as
little as possible in residential areas, and always try to walk in front of a
business if there is a choice. When I was at NYU (early 90s), kids always got
mugged trying to cut through on 10th street (residential). If you took a longer
route that kept you on Broadway and in front of businesses and you were OK.
Walk on Ocean or the BW after dark, cross in front of the Berk Hotel, cross
Kingsley, stay in front of Adriatic, etc. If you see something suspicious,
change direction and go into the business. No where the little hotels are, the
BB's... If you have to stay residential. Look up the block before you go see
who is there, have one key in hand in pocket. And if you need to borrow my dog,
let me know. he scares the crap out of most people.

And if it is just a mugging/jacking, cooperate and give them what they want.
Your car, wallet, etc is not worth it. If it is not a mugging and they are
trying to take you- do not cooperate. Kick, scream (CALL 9-1-1), use that key
to jab in eye, and do whatever you can to not be removed from where you are!
Lay on your back kicking so you cannot be lifted (like a toddler), make as big
a scene as possible! At least that's what I would do.

I was just feeling a lot better and more confident in AP too. It is a shame

Many of the AP criminals do their crap on stolen bicycles. One part of the
solution would be to require all bikes in AP to be registered. This would
probably lead to lot's of stolen bikes being impounded and/or returned to their
owners, and it would help take away a tool used by criminals. I know for a fact
that my neighborhood is full of bike riding drug dealers.

I just bought a Blackbury Flea headlight to go along with the taillight of the

Absolutely. I saw 2 AP bike cops the other day.
I just bought a Blackbury Flea headlight to go along with the taillight of
the same name. You can either charge them via USB or solar cell. Both are
tiny, super bright and you can put them in your pocket when you park your
 bike.

[AsburyPark] Re: Two more shootings last night

2011-08-09 Thread jwkeady
Two young men shot in the streets and the conversation vacillates between
Vespas, dogs and firearms. Seemingly no concern for the well-being of the
young men, concern if their families need anything, etc. Why? Because the
assumption is that they are black, they are gang members, and they got what
they deserved. Now all those may be true, but none of that is confirmed and
there does not seem to be a shard of concern about these two human lives. They
could be innocent, they could have been walking home from work and caught a
stray bullet, who knows. But for many on this list, again, the assumption is
that it's just another young n-gg-r shot in the ghetto.

Even if they were involved with gangs and were involved in criminal activity,
the discussion should be about how we stop it at the root cause. Crime is up,
we have shootings in the streets (again).

Wake up.

And since Oak may ask, my suggestions for dealing with these issues are the
same as they were five years ago, but who wants to listen and implement?
Remember, I was the fool that was asked to officially leave town by a fellow
councilman (now Mayor) and a city director (Gilmour) for being honest about the
gang problem in the city years ago. Let's be real, it's not politically
popular - if you want to get re-elected, you don't help young black men in the
ghetto to break the cycle of poverty and violence, you lock them up and show
you're tough on crime.

If it's a white kid from outside of AP that catches a bullet one day, maybe
then someone might actually care and do something.

Peace, Jim Keady

Jim, I think you may be pushing it with the comment:

But for many on this list, again, the assumption is that it's just
another young n-gg-r shot in the ghetto.

1. In general, there seems to be some crime problems in Asbury.

2. For some reason, people just can't grasp the concept of cameras. Meanwhile,
Hinge pointed out that cameras on private citizens house caught the carjacking
helping the police to a suspect. Maybe some lawyer will sue the camera guy for
invading the suspects privacy because they didn't have a sign warning of
cameras. the city HAS to install cameras in many parts of town.

3. Asbury has an image problem. It doesn't take a consultant to tell you that.
Yes, it's come a long long way via private monies invested into businesses and
homes. And there are those who wills say - who gives a shit if someone's
afraid, let them go to avon instead...

4. The police and courts have their hands full.

5. And of course, the billions in fed and state aid that AP gets in one form or
another. Please, tell me where it goes. I read the budgets and audit reports.

Good night.

RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Two more shootings last night

2011-08-09 Thread Jenni
I've been reading bits and pieces of this thread. And, of course, I no
longer live in Asbury, even though I do love the place so much!

One thing that has come to mind. I remember when I rented an apartment in
Asbury, many moons ago, that before I could move in, an inspector had to
come out and give an approval for a c/o. The place was approved fine, but
it occurred to me that if this was still being enforced - and being enforced
on the west side just as much as the east - that it would force out the slum
lords, which would in turn force out many of the tenants who instigate the
crimes.

Does anyone on here know if this is still a requirement, or if it is at all
being enforced?

Generally speaking of course, if the landlord takes pride in the property
and keeps it fixed up, it attracts a better class of resident. Just my two
cents!

as a landlord, you can get he place ready for a co and pass - then the tenant
moves in.

Sometimes you get good tenants - and sometimes not,

And that doesn't matter rich or poor nor by race.

And the system doesn't make easy to evict a tenant either.

RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Two more shootings last night

2011-08-09 Thread Jenni
No, race has nothing to do with it, and wealth doesn't always either.

When I was a landlord (a house in MD that I co-owned), I was extremely
cautious about who I rented to. I wanted references, and wanted to ensure
that their previous dwellings were left in good shape, that they were not
trouble in any way.

Now I am sure that there are people who commit crimes that also are very
nice tenants, but I think that is not common. It would seem that if the
landlords have to fix the place up, they would be very concerned about it
being kept nice, so would be more inclined to screen applicants carefully.
