[AsburyPark] My Daughter and Friend Car Attacked....

2011-08-12 Thread oakdorf
So maybe dan's right, time to end the Fireworks.

Dear Mayor and Police Chief,

Wednesday night after the fireworks, my daughter and her male friend were
driving west on Cookman Ave when they encountered a very large group of kids
walking and blocking the flow of traffic.

Their windows were rolled down when they approached the groups around Grand
Ave. MY daughter was going tot he BrickWall.

AS they stopped, one girl on the handlebars of a bike looked at my daughter and
said to her what you looking at bitch

Another kid and the other side of the car (they surrounded the car instead of
moving out of the way) - slapped the male passenger, then another kid reached
in and opunched him. Then they proceeded to rip open the passenger door and try
to pull him out and punch my daughter.

She managed to keep quiet, get through the mass and pakr on lake ave.
On the way over, the saw a liitle white girl getting beatup in front of brick
wall by a tall white male.

My daughter ran down the block, called 911 (so there is a tape) and this is
sara - come now!

the people in the brick wall did nothing as this man was punching my daughter's
friend(she figured that out) and eventually 8 police cars came(she said). They
didn't arrest the guy punching the girl. Wjhy? Because he said he was sorry to
the police. Even though whne my daughter got there, he was picking up a metal
chair to bash it over her and anyone else in the way.

They said if they want, they could come to headhquarters between 8 and 4 and
file a complaint.

So now, about those 2 parking tickets she got (actually me, as the car was
registered in my name...). Someone seems to be pulling tickets off windows.

So the cop who told my kid to stay away from AP he was right.

Like or not facts are facts.

So Jim, was it my kid's fault for being attacked?

2011-08-12 Thread asburycouple
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that, but glad that it sounds like everyone is ok.

I hate to think the answer to what appears to be an attempt by gangs and thugs
to infect the boardwalk is to stop doing things like fireworks. Isn't that
really just throwing up our hands and saying you win?

I don't know the answer, but there has to be something more compelling than
surrender. Madison Marquette, if you're reading this understand this will
start to impact the tremendous progress you've made. It is real and can't be
painted over. Perhaps it's time to invest in cameras? Add some more security
not just on the boards but on the streets a couple blocks in?

And what ever happened to all those cameras that were announced two years ago -
and if I recall even funded? Haven't seen those yet.

[AsburyPark] Gang fight at the Beach Bar involving The Bloods

2011-08-12 Thread Hinge
Here's a story that hasn't been reported anywhere.

Approx. 3 weeks ago, there was an incident at The Beach Bar that's connected to
the near riot that occurred after Wed. fireworks.

A large group wearing red bandanas went to the Beach Bar, but were denied
access. This turned into a large fight which resulted in a guy being stabbed in
the legs and stomach. This whole event was witnessed by one of my local sound
engineer friends. The injured guy crawled away leaving a trail of blood.
Meanwhile, the fight went on, and my friend saw one male point a gun directly
at another persons head. At one point there were 3 guns visibly drawn, and
shots fired, but nobody was hit. When the fight was over, my friend watched as
the blood was being bleached off of the boardwalk.

Remnants of this group were the same people who needed the police escort.

There's a reason why there are dress codes and high prices for drinks.

Ashame, because we really love sitting out on the ocean sometimes.

Other then that, we had a great bike ride this am. Down the bw, around OG,
across the bridge and downtown.

On the OG side, there was what may best be described as a homeless woman
sitting along the lake in some bushes. That around the area of the
Warrington(?) rooming house - that and the one next to it one of the few
remaining eyesores along Wesley Lake on the OG side.

[AsburyPark] Verizon Wireless Service

2011-08-12 Thread oakdorf
A couple weeks ago, we had some real bad Verizon Wireless service down around
the BW and Cookman area. My wife finally called verizon to report the problem.
The first girl suggested it was the phone. Told them it wasn't just the one
phone, but all.

The put a trouble ticket in. The went and investigated it and found they did
have a problem - and they even called back and advised that it was fixed.

Good thing.

[AsburyPark] Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?

2011-08-12 Thread oakdorf
Interesting comment someone made.

Can someone define it?

I can't say I go out to dinner to often I really enjoy my own food much more.

Are boardwalk prices high?

How do they compare with the rest of Monmouth County?

Is rafferty's high priced or middle of the road?

Is the ice cream a fair price?

Is the candyteria fairly priced?

WHAT:

 - would be fair for the whole community
 - kind of eateries and price points would be fair to the whole community.
 - kinds of food are missing to make it seem fair to the community and not
those upper class a-holes that come in and take a shot () at rehabbing a
business, home or supporting a struggling town?

WHAT:

 - would stop a kid from trying to pull someone out of a car to kick their ass
for the hell of it?
 - would stop someone from taking a shotgun and shoving in someone's face and
make them strip down and steal their car?

First person that can tell me (without blaming society), I'll cut a check out
for $100 to their favorite cause.

[AsburyPark] So where are those cameras???

2011-08-12 Thread oakdorf
So if it was funded, what happened?

Was my daughter's story simply a story?

Are there any other witnesses (including those in the brickwall and the
apartment upstairs ...)

The city has spent quite a few dollars on a several marketing campaigns of
questionable quality.

Maybe it's about time to get a couple cameras up and running. Tell you want,
give those funds to local businesses to get their own exterior mounted cameras
up and running. Local businesses - your real stupid if you don't take the step
and do it yourself.

I'd even pay a camera tax on one of those $10 drinks. Or why not take a few $
from the parking meters? Or the money the GOV kicked back to AP to keep it up
and running?

I recall a number of years ago, there was one councilman who lived downtown who
objected, based on a person's right to privacy - on pubic property.

I wonder if Spring Lake has cameras. Maybe not, They just call the pd when
someone who doesn't look right is walking down the block.

I should clarify though, this was in specific areas, where they were

The city has spent quite a few dollars on a several marketing campaigns of
 questionable quality.

Maybe it's about time to get a couple cameras up and running. Tell you want,
give those funds to local businesses to get their own exterior mounted
cameras up and running. Local businesses - your real stupid if you don't take
the step and do it yourself.

I'd even pay a camera tax on one of those $10 drinks. Or why not take a few
$ from the parking meters? Or the money the GOV kicked back to AP to keep it
 up and running?

I recall a number of years ago, there was one councilman who lived downtown
who objected, based on a person's right to privacy - on pubic property.

I wonder if Spring Lake has cameras. Maybe not, They just call the pd when
someone who doesn't look right is walking down the block.

[AsburyPark] Re: Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?

2011-08-12 Thread fancypaaantz
The problem is the inherent conflict with gentrification. The rich move in
and displace the poor. The city, powers that be, investors wants
gentrification because it makes money and turns the city around. The community
wants it to the extent it makes a community safer, prettier, increases property
values, etc. But, the displaced don't want to be displaced... And where will
people be displaced to? Here's my two cents. The problems that Asbury faces are
not Asbury problems, they are New Jersey problems, they are United States
problems. Poverty is a bigger problem than just Asbury, Camden, and Newark...
The solution for a long time has been projects, Section 8, welfare,
concentrating that poverty into specific areas, in specific cities, with
terrible schools. Then we tried to fix the schools with Abbott, but we did not
fix the root problems- poverty, violence, gangs, and addiction. I think to fix
it, we would have to break up the concentration of poverty, but on a much
larger scale. Provide affordable (Section 8) housing in every town allowing
people to choose where they want to live, in every school district, provide
real job training and career counseling in addition to welfare benefits, public
daycare facilities so that moms can return to work, along with affordable
healthcare, mental healthcare, addiction counseling, and reproductive
healthcare/counseling. In essence, stop trying to concentrate the have nots
into a ghetto where poverty will continue to beget poverty and violence begets
violence, but rather to shift our mindset to enable all towns and all cities to
provide opportunities to those who could benefit from those opportunities. I
remember being in a philosophy class where we said that if we could design a
society not knowing where in that society we would be born, we would all design
one where the bottom is not that bad. Now, in the USA our bottom is not as bad
as in other countries. I have walked through a crowded train station in India
and been surrounded by children with bloated bellies begging for food. But, our
bottom is not as good as some other places. There was a lot of talk about
socialism and not being like Europe or Canada during the last election. Well,
what do we want to be? How can we foster upward mobility while also creating a
society where the bottom is not so bad? I do know that if we just focus on this
as an Asbury problem, we are not going to really get anywhere. I don't think we
would ever see real change unless and until we tackle it on a much bigger
scale, but that will never happen in this political climate.

 WHAT:

  - would stop a kid from trying to pull someone out of a car to kick their

  - would stop someone from taking a shotgun and shoving in someone's face and
make them strip down and steal their car?

First person that can tell me (without blaming society), I'll cut a check out
for $100 to their favorite cause.

[AsburyPark] Re: Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?

2011-08-12 Thread oakdorf
Thank you.

However this:

Provide affordable
(Section 8) housing in every town allowing people to choose where they want to
live

Note: This exists today in some form. I am a section 8 landlord. In Ocean
Township. 1 - 2 family and 4 single family homes. All good people - maybe rough
around the edges. They have kids. Go ot OT schools etc.

provide real job training and career counseling

Isn't that afford today?

in addition to welfare benefits, public daycare facilities so that moms can
return to work

Isn't that afford today? Shouldn't that be for all moms?

along with affordable healthcare

again, healthcare exists in some form, right? What about affordable for you and
me?

 mental healthcare, addiction
counseling, and reproductive healthcare/counseling.

ALL afford today. Especially if you face jail time vs. counseling.

A mother of 3 section 8 benefit - in the area of !700 per month.
 - Does that count as affordable?
 - Daycare.
 - free post HS and preschool education, food, medical.

Add it up.

Im all for programs to help. The trick is getting people to make it worth their
while.

Trust me. I've spoken to many people who RATHER NOT get off the benefit package
- it simply doesn't pay enough.

And true, there are thousands of people on wait lists for section 8. The
correct term is HOUSING VOUCHERS. The voucher enables a person to take it
anywhere - so I have a middletown check every month, a long branch check every
month and a couple from the state every month.

Get inspected each year by whatever program and have to fix whatever my tenant
may have broken. it could get crazy.

NOt much an incentive, is it?

[AsburyPark] Re: Could this be the short-term answer?

2011-08-12 Thread oakdorf
For it to be the answer you first have to read the article and ask the
questions.
1. Expand recreation hours. Does ap have a rec center or a program. I don't
know.

2. Expand cameras well never mind.

3. Curfew. How much in legal fees will this cost to hammer out.

4. Fining people that have little to begin with.

5. Go sit in ap municipal court one day. Packed.

Monitor social media

(CNN) -- Philadelphia has been plagued by teen violence, but the City of. For
 free. OBrotherlLove is fighting back.
Mayor Michael Nutter announced this week a robust initiative that began with
 a stiff curfew at 9 p.m. Friday.
The effort comes after a string of attacks on residents by groups of young
people who are alerted to sudden gatherings at a given place via e-mail and
 social media.
It's a growing problem in this country, police Commissioner Charles H.
 Ramsey told CNN Friday.
Nutter delivered tough remarks about the problem in a church sermon Sunday
that has received national and international attention, a blunt no-excuses
scolding that happened to coincide with the start of the England riots.
An African-American, Nutter noted that those involved in the Philadelphia
attacks are predominantly black and said their behavior damaged themselves
 and damaged their race.
He upheld religious values, underscored the importance of parental discipline
and lambasted absentee parents, particularly fathers, for neglecting and not
 keeping watch over their children.
He said fathering is engaging with the child and shaping them. He described a
neglectful dad as a human ATM or a sperm donor.
Accordingly, his measures target both the young attackers and their parents
 or legal guardians.
Nutter signed an order temporarily moving the curfew to 9 p.m. Fridays and
Saturdays for everyone under the age of 18 in targeted enforcement districts.
They are in Center City, the downtown area, and University City, the West
Philadelphia neighborhood where the University of Pennsylvania is located.
Throughout the rest of the city, the curfew will remain 10 p.m. for those
under the age of 13 and those for minors under the age of 18.
Minors who are caught breaking curfew will be sent home, brought home or
transported to a police station where their parents will be contacted. Minors
may be issued a citation with a $100 to $300 fine for a first offense, the
city said in a press release.
Parents will receive a first-violation notice and then will be fined up to
 $500 for successive violations.
These notices and citations will be issued when the parent comes to collect
their child from the police station.
If parents don't come for their child within a reasonable time, police will
contact the Department of Human Services to start an investigation.
Parents whose child under the age of 18 is found liable or guilty by a court
for injury, theft or other criminal acts will be liable to the person who
suffered the injury or loss of property.
Parents and legal guardians will be subject imprisonment for up to 90 days
 for repeat curfew violation offenses.
Ramsey said Friday the first offense will most likely prompt a warning, with
fines to follow for other curfew violations. If they come down and start to
assault people or damage property we are going to arrest them.
Up to the beginning of the school year next month, police will maintain a
greater presence in the targeted enforcement areas and work to improve camera
surveillance. It will also expand weekend hours at recreation centers.

[AsburyPark] Re: Honeymoon in Asbury Park

2011-08-12 Thread 2fast4u
You've said it as best as I could. Texas has a fund to help
the aged and poor pay thier utilities by adding a dollar to
utility bills. The State politicians are only giving the poor
less than what is needed and using the fund for other things. A
commentator said it amounts to embezzlement. The point being
if AP is being given all these millions for education and because
the area is designated a blighted area, to encourage entreprenures
to come here, open and establish businesses but I hear they come here
get a chunk of the grant money, open a business and in a year
the business is kaput!

I didn't spark a race riot because it always about race. Do you
see any Black businesses? One or two. Mr. Fashions sold his business
and the building it was in is under renovation. The buyer moved
the store to an obscure location in Ocean Twp. If you didn't know this little
factoid, you would think Mr. Fashions no longer existed.

This little City has ALL of the problems of NY, Chicago or LA!
It's just on a smaller scale. Dennis, thank you!

Walk a mile in my shoesSharon and Keady sparked a race riot on the list
and that is hardly a bad thing. Each one one of them hit a hot point while
pressing their agenda. Neither of them intentionally or otherwise trying to
offend. The sad reality is that crime across our country is way up, I
understand that spring lake has had more crimes committed this summer than
the past ten years combined. The cause? Heroin. Addiction. Poverty.
Two of the three no know racial boundaries. Poverty does. Sharon stated that
12% of the population are Black. Keady can surely tell us what % of the
population are in jail and commit the bulk if the street crime across our
 country. Sharon is living proof that we are what the constitution says;
created equal. But for Asbury Park the sad harsh reality is that there is a
generation of lost displaced backs against the walk mostly Black males who
have turned to gangs and street crime because they have no alternative, they
seemingly have no choice. This despite fantastic parents like Sharon that
have led exemplary lives of hard work and toil and service to their fellow
man, only to see their sins and daughters besmirch their good names. So
what's the point and what's the solution? Because in Asbury Park you keep
your eyes open wide not get caught in a situation where a young man with a
gun wants more than you got.
As Asbury has moved forward with restaurants and clubs and shops all designed
for upper middle class rich people, the streets are still littered with poor
lost souks he'll bent on destruction. The solutions to make Asbury a safe,
crime free community are complex and difficult and they start with leadership
at the highest levels working together. In the schools, in the religious
organizations and the local government the leadership has to come together
and start the arduos process of healing and growth.
So far that ain't happening but talking about it here and there and
everywhere is at the very Lear a start.
