Put 'g' in the list of options, e.g. "hidden,rekey,g"

Re: [Astlinux-users] wifi on 0.7.1

2010-04-24 Thread John Reynolds
So here the update. I set the encryption to WPA, and still no luck. The
message is that the password is wrong, but I know I'm putting it in
correctly since I'm looking at it on the screen of one computer, and
entering it in the other.

Here is the contents of /etc/hostapd.conf

# automatically generated. do not edit!

logger_syslog=-1
logger_syslog_level=2
logger_stdout=--1
logger_stdout_level=2

debug=0

ctrl_interface_group=0

# should this be per-ssid?
macaddr_acl=0

dump_file=/tmp/hostapd.dump

bridge=br0
interface=ap0
driver=nl80211
ssid=sunflower
channel=11

hw_mode=b
auth_algs=1

wpa_passphrase=reynolds1234
wpa=1
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
wpa_pairwise=TKIP

wpa_strict_rekey=1
wpa_group_rekey=600
wpa_gmk_rekey=14400

It seems that it is using 802.11b... not sure how to select "g"

If I remove the password, and do not add "wpa" or "wep", but leave the
encryption space blank then hostapd does not start.

If I kill the process/deamon, and restart it manually with: hostapd -
-K -t /tmp/etc/hostapd.conf
Then this is the output.

Sorry, started playing with uhhh working on, my net5501 box. The net4801
is the one with the wifi card. I'll check it out and let you know.

Before you commented, I did delete the "hidden,rekey" part of the config,
and I did see the SSID broadcast. I still could not connect, so I expect it
is as you say, something to do with wpa vs wpa2. I'll check it out and let
you know.

 I did edit rc.conf... and I am using the web interface for most other
 items. I didn't see where to do edits for WiFi in the web interface.
 (the rc.conf edit was done via the "edit" tab of the web interface,
 and not via nano directly... I doubt that matters).

Rekey means to force periodic rekeying of all stations, so that they are
less susceptible to a brute-force decryption attack.

Start by turning off "hidden" and see if the network is visible.

Also, try "wpa" instead of "wpa2". There's a lot of equipment out there
that still doesn't implement WPA2 correctly (even though WPA was found
to be "weak" over 5 years ago).

Worst case, try "wep" and see if that works. If it does, revert back to
wpa or wpa and go from there.

Last case, kill off hostapd manually, and try running it by hand:

hostapd - -K -t /tmp/etc/hostapd.conf

and look through that.

I made a custom 0.7-branch build for my "WRAP" with these packages:

compat-wireless (from 2010-01-27)
CRDA
hostap
iw
---
NO madwifi
NO wireless tools

I did not configure anything else except the above entries in
user.conf (except the "hidden").

Maybe Philip can help out.

Ok, let me back up a little bit further...

Astlinux is using compat-wireless now, correct? As I was never fluent
with madwifi configuration, I'm not sure what difference the change to
compat-wireless means to me. I'm not putting together the big picture
based on what I'm reading on google, and what is available in
astlinux. (there is "iw" but no "iwconfig". How do I make changes to
the running config? where do I save these configs? what is the correct
syntax?).

Usually someone else has already asked these questions, and I just
search the list for the answer... but I'm not finding an anwer to this
one.

 I did edit rc.conf... and I am using the web interface for most other
 items. I didn't see where to do edits for WiFi in the web interface.
 (the rc.conf edit was done via the "edit" tab of the web interface,
 and not via nano directly... I doubt that matters).

This is what I have set:

BRIDGE0="eth1 ap0"
WIFI_ENABLE="yes"
WIFIMODS="ath5k"
AP0="wlan0:sunflower:11:br0:wpa2:password:hidden,rekey"

I just checked the output of lspci, I'm good there also (I figured it
would be good as I can see it recognize the card during boot up).
I'll try with the "hidden" removed, just to be see something different.

Thanks for the help thus far. I've finally made the corrections you
pointed out, and the box comes up with the module loaded, and seems to
be right... but I'm not able to make a connection to the box
wirelessly.

AP0="wlan0:sunflower:11:br0:wpa2:password:hidden,rekey"

above is what I have in user.conf. I understand that this means that
the SSID is "sunflower", operating on channel 11, bridge 0 (which in
this situation is "eth1 ap0"), wpa2 is the security type/protocol,
"password" is the password, and "hidden" means to hide the SSID...
don't know about "rekey".

Can someone confirm the above, and provide the appropreate option
alternatives (or where/how to find them)?

I have looked at the "iw" command, and read online some usage
examples, but none seemed to yield anything useful.

Thanks again,

John R

Using the web interface, you should use:

Network tab -> Advanced Configuration: User System Variables: {Edit User
Variables}

Then add your variable definitions as above. Then reboot.

The files used in the case is "/mnt/kd/rc.conf.d/user.conf"
