Re: Shadow Line full voice demo released!

Not sure why that is funny... some people simply like to work things out on my own. No need to laugh about it... as for switching language, if you are using the clipboard as your output source, you do have to switch keyboards. NVDA is a better solution if you dont want to use that method, since the text goes directly to the screenreader. Brians problem sounded like it had more to do with instant translate.

@CAE_Jones:Im probably going to be using mostly placeholder sounds until such time as I can get a hold of a nice big sound library or two. Or twenty. As for voices...right now Im considering just writing out scripted cutscenes for the screen-reader to recite when theyre triggered. Braillemon did that. Braillemon was made in Game Maker, though, and I cant get that. *mutters about insane prices* It should be doable in BGT, though. Might have to write the function manually, but it should be doable.

2015-05-12 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : Spiraling Wyvern via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Psycho Strike - New Strategy/Action game

Yes, that actually is the main issue that needs to be examined a bit more. Im pretty sure whoever could produce a side scroller could eventually make something that can get as involved as the BK games or something. However, most people seem to stop at a certain point in which they just throw down what they have and do not really expand on the idea. Again, making an extensive game isnt a boarder issue as Americans make involved and advanced games all the time in the sighted community. However, here, we seem to always hit a ceiling at a certain point in a project. And I dont think this is also a country issue either, it seems nearly everyone hits a low ceiling limit on how far they are going with a game. Most likely Uki continued on making his games as advanced as it could get because he enjoyed the project. That makes me think though, how much joy do people get working on these projects though.
bsp; We are a very small but voal community to each other and uh, at times I note the annoyance and disappointment crop up very often among any good things being said. My favorite recent example would involve the game Sneak was working on. When he first released a navigation onept demo of his Crimson waters game, he wanted to see if people had a good experience navigating with the boat. Suddenly the comments headed toward sthis game blows because so and so didnt include something, not noting the concept demo and navigation test part. We are very very critical and extreme here where enjoyment of working projects kills progress here if one posts their projects online. Other examples of our community being very draining on the willpower part: Swamp and the many, many, many security attacks and people generally making Aprones progress on his games slower and slower. I believe we are way to critical and negative o
f a community for anyone to post anything without meeting negative responses before any constructive ones appear. Normally games that tend to be well received end up being fullY finished and most likely had no prior info about (Sort of an out of the blue thing). We are much more happier when it comes to full products instead of just beta tests. I believe someone stated before we already have a negative stigma to beta releases and how no one works on it afterwards. If I remember right, the BK games were just dropped on our lap one day when someone found it and posted the game. Same goes for BK3 when it was released as a full game. I believe for people to possibly be more motivated in working on projects, and producing higher and higher quality games is to probably end the practice of public betas and alphas. It seem shalf the time having a public test project ends up causing more issues as everyone
uot; seems to have a suggestion for you to add, and get pissed when you dont consider or add it. Then the negativity comes out and quality goes down hill. I think taking a page to what the Japanese developers do here and just stay silent mostly about their projects until their ready might work better and ease up on the stress one is facing from the community. And I believe this is where Psycho Strike, and probably many games of the past seem to kep doing and releasing early to a pack of hungry, unsatisfied, wolves (Other examples include MOTA, he Bavisoft stuff, and so on).

On another observation, I seem to be typing more than usual tonight. Hrm. I kind of wanted to go back to the donation model since that was also mentioned before. Everyone still remembers Audiodefense tried this and it did not work. I am not sure if this was due to us being too small of a community to produce the amount, or just did not want to pay until we got something. Howeve,r I also remember AD had no demo of what they planned to do. I guess if one were to make an involved demo, to it as much content as possible in a 30 to 1 hour ame, people would be more willing to pay, and hopefully recognize the demo as a viewing of the potential of the game. This may resort to using lower quality materials for the game such as sounds, but I think as a friend said before, it costs nothing to code if you know how to. And most of the time, demos before the game is fully ready end to have lower quality sounds and
visauls due to those reasons just to motivate the public to make it look and sound better. ...Someone, go think of an amazing idea, code it and use what sounds you got o make the first 2 or so levels of a game, and present it to the public with a donation link. Lets go for testing demo donations!

Re: Psycho Strike - New Strategy/Action game

Yes, our community is often pretty cutthroat...or perhaps a better word would be thoughtless. And by this, I mean people will say this sucks because they seem to equate this sucks to I dont like this. And Im going to say something borderline offensive here, depending on who you are. Many of these situations come about from people whose English isnt great. They sort of throw words around sometimes, and Ive actually hit on this before. Ive seen it too many times to discount. Things end up sounding harsher, meaner, more judgmental than they were probably intended. There are definitely native English speakers who do this too - hell, weve probably all done it a little here and there, actually - but I think its much more common with people who have difficulties with English. The community is fairly small, so every negative comment hits a little harder than it would from one member of a bigger communi
ty.Regarding OSX vs. Windows and all that...well, two things. One, narrator is definitely not bad anymore; its coming along, at any rate. Im running windows 8.1 and can attest to this. Two, NVDA is free, lightweight, compact and probably blows the hell out of Voice-over. Voice-over on a mac, in my admittedly very limited experience, is slow to the point of being laggy. If you like OSX, thats fine. Im not trying to convert you. I will say, however, that Windows is still the OS of choice in the business world, so it might behoove you to be able to work within it if youre ever in a field that uses computers, even peripherally. Considering that shelling out a couple hundred bucks to get a more recent and more stable/robust version of said OS would benefit you on many levels, I daresay it ought to be worth your time.If it isnt, though, Im going to default to my previous point. Do. not. complain. If developers dont support
your outdated OS, live with it; the onus is on you to meet them, not on them to meet you. If they were providing some sort of essential service, then Id see a reason to raise hell; since theyre not, however, I think its downright churlish to carry on about lack of XP support. XP is dead, folks. And the longer you use it, the more you open yourself up to potential virus/file corruption problems that are no longer handled by newer antivirus programs and their updating definitions and such. When and if your computer crashes because XP didnt know how to help you defend it, when that computer needs a couple hundred bucks of work because the hard-drive had to be wiped and your files reinstated, then tell me its still not worth it to upgrade to a supported version of the OS.Im sorry, but this really, really gets me annoyed.

2015-05-12 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : JLove via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Psycho Strike - New Strategy/Action game

@Jayde,The problem with upgrading for some people is that in many cases its not just buying the new OS, its buying a new computer outright, because the computer that they currently use that runs XP doesnt have the necessary specs to handle Windows 7 and beyond. I believe Windows 7 can be purchased for somewhere around $200 maybe, and that is even if you can still buy it, since Microsoft apparently has made it so that all new computers now come with Windows 8 pre-installed. So this person has had to shell out triple the amount of an OS at a minimum, because his or her PC is unable to run the new OS due to lack of memory, a processor incapable of it, incompatible hardware, etc. And even if they could upgrade their PC hardware to handle the OS, many of them would have to outsource that work. For the few that do have the knowledge to do the hardware upgrade themselves, its still rather costly, probably more than the OS.As I
stated above, all new computers are automatically loaded with Windows 8 at the factory. But lets say this person doesnt want 8. Obviously if one has the knowledge they can get rid of 8 and install 7, but its not as easy as it used to be, just stick the CD in and let it format your drive and install, the way it was done with older operating systems, including XP. Windows 8 makes use of the GPT format, which basically locks you out from doing that. I bought a computer with Windows 8, and when I decided I wanted to revert to 7, instead of just being able to format my hard drive and install the new OS as I had done for years, I was forced to boot into Linux and use the partition editor to zero out the drive completely to get rid of the GPT so that I could then install Windows. Not everyone has that sort of knowledge, which means that, too, would have to be outsourced. I called a couple of places once to find out how much they charge
to install an OS for someone, and the price ran roughly at $250. Thats not exactly cheap, especially if you just shelled out three times that for a PC.All if that being said, to anyone for whom upgrading is at all a possibility, I strongly encourage it, at least to as far as Windows 7.

karateka is accessible. its a beat em up so it should work quite well. hold the screan to walk, and if youre in a fight you here a small sound before an enemy attacks. when he attacks youll also here it, and you can tap the screen to block. after blocking, you get a sertain amount of time to attack back by tapping the screen. if you here a gong sound, you have a limited amount of time to press the screen with 2 fingers to activate a bonus attack. it does damage and leaves the enemy stunned where you can attack some more. the onyl ishew is picking up flowers that restore your health, because you need to tap on them.

Yes I think the music loops were done by Kelly since version 1.0.David Greenwood did add the ability to play mp3 files which I requested. In the 2.0 version of the game engine, he added the ability to play your own sound files if they were renamed and in the mp3 format such as song1.mp3, song2.mp3I am planning on having that feature in my Sarah game update.

Re: Mainstream iOS game, any of them that are playable?

Well Hanif if by mainstream games you mean games by big companies like nintendo, square etc, not to my knolidge, however it is worth remembering that a lot of games for Ios with! access fixes for vo support werent designed for blind people, heck, even some audiogames like soul trapper pappasangre and The Inquisitor werent designed! for blind people they just happene to be audiogames. Thus, games like A dark room and The ensign, solara, trivia crack, lords and knights, King of Dragon pass, the choiceofgames titles, lost cities and startraders are all in a sense mainstream games in the sense that they were marketed for sighted people and are played by far more sighted players than blind ones, they just happened to have got a few access fixes along the way. There were a couple of games whos performance with vo is so irregular that playing them is goes beyond the bounds of access, ie, like learning the sounds of a graphical game such as mortal com
bat, they take a blind player far more trouble to play. Monster Kingdom, (though Id not recommend that one simply because any game where the devs categorically reffuse access fixes doesnt deserve anyone to buy it), the Haypy monster games which have the labelling system from hell plus timed battles that require specific screen tapping and some poke and hope moments (the developers of those games didnt even respond), and lastly silver sword, which is so close to being accessible I could scream, but with no coordinates or way to know where you are or have been getting around is an extercise in frustration and sadly the developer has refused any access fixes, (partly due to some bad experiences with the community I have to say). Ive also investigated a hole tonne of stuff but didnt find much else noticeable, even for vague access fixes at all, which is a shame, particularly with some of the gamebooks on offer like the delight games or the ori
ginal ff series, but there you go.

JLove wrote:Interesting points so far. Again, lets use BK3 as an example. That games sounds arent all professional quality sounds, yet I am amazed by the sheer amount of content and complexity. I spent many hours playing that game, and I still have yet to complete it.Arjan, your supposition regarding money, and how it would affect development, is flawed when you consider the following:1. The developer of BK3 was at a young age when he coded BK2, slightly older for BK3, but I certainly would tend to believe that he was not rich. I highly doubt that he had thousands of dollars to throw into game development, sounds, etc.2. Despite the lack of money he had to work with in terms of budgeting for his game, he managed to create an amazing title, and lets not forget that he did it 100% solo. This says to me that it is possible to create a game worth something
even when you live on a tight budget, and you have a one or two man development crew.3. Despite the fact that his games are some of the best I have ever seen in terms of content and quality, despite the fact that he could easily have charged prices that would rival mainstream games on the market today, (whitch I would have gladly paid), they are available completely free to all.4. Shadow Line is yet another example of this. Solo developer who I am 99% certain is not rich, yet the game is amazing in complexity, content, and overall quality. And guess what? Again, despite the fact that he could easily charge mainstream prices, it is available completely free.5. You spoke of numbers of copies that are sold. Did it not occur to you or to the developers in the U.S. that perhaps if they put the same quality and content, showed the same love, for their projects as did the two above examples, copies selling would most definitely n
ot be an issue? I would be willing to state with a rather large degree of certainty that many people would have gladly paid for the BK titles, and SR as well. While it is true that the above-referenced games dont have the most professional sounds, I will take quality of gameplay and content over that any day of the week, hands down. Its hard for me to believe that this doesnt occur to U.S. developers. This is true, however I was mostly referring to the point where the people who were once young now grow up and get a job, at which point it is absolutely not profitable to spend massive amounts of time on a title which ultimately is not going to give you a ton of money. Regarding that, I stand by what I said. If the BK games were sold for $25, then undoubtedly people would buy them, several hundred perhaps. But remember that it would stop there. I genuinely think that you dont get dozens of new people every month after t
he first few months. Especially because if a game is already complex to a certain degree, those that enjoy complex games will buy it anyway. Making it even more complex wont really increase your customer count, and might even decrease it because the more complex a game is, the less likely it is that those who arent so experienced with playing audiogames will buy the title because it simply does not appeal to them, they dont have the capacity to figure all this very complicated stuff out. This is why games like top speed are still played by a lot of people who are a little more casual gamers, they dont play as much so they cant be bothered to traverse through entire worlds of content, they have much more fun playing something a little simpler but still challenging. As it stands now, PsychoStrike is actually far from a bad game for those kinds of people, whether they would pay $25 for it is something Im not so sure about. But hey, a lot of bli
nd folks spend hundreds on devices that can play daisy books, help you navigate, etc when you might as well get a phone and have all of that functionality plus even more in one single device, and probably save a lot of money as well. Paying $25 for a game honestly is far less worrying than what I just mentioned IMO.

Re: Announcing the release of remnant 2.0! 3.0 beta now live!

Hay all, sorry again for bumping a topic that I previously posted in, but I have some news regarding Remnant.first of all, the slightly bad news.remnant has been delaied; again, but this time its due to mother nature. You see, my area has been experiencing lost of unusually heavy amounts of violent lightning storms, and my pc doesnt like them that much, that and the chance of the power going out or frying my hard drive is to high to wrisk using my pc during these storms.Due to this, the release date for remnant 3.0 has been set back to. july. Also getting in contact with theOnlyPKMNmaster is like pulling teath, as he hasnt responded to PMs, but he working on psycho strike at the moment, plus he probably has colege finals coming up, so I cant really blame him.It would be a real bummer to have to make the main character silent for this final chapter, as he has to interact with Remnant during two of the endings.
Okay, the good news...despite the setbacks, remnant 3.0 is still coming along pretty nicely. All but a few of the viruses are done and most of the levels are at least on the stage list with only the final boss levels not appearing their yet.almost all cutsceens are done as well; again with the exception of the boss ones.I decided not to using the voice samples I talked about in my last post, as I came up with a slightl cooler intro than what I originally planned on.Ill be working on remnant over the next month or so, to get everything done, and I may even be able to get an objective view on the campaign soon from someone whos never plaied AAC or Remnant before as well. The only thing that can push back the release date at this point is when theOnlyPKMNmaster can record lines, but, please, dont get mad at him if he cant before July, just know that Remnant 3.0 will be out when its really and truely ready.Something Ive been thinking about for a while...Would anyone be interested in adding their voice to remnant?I was kind of thinking about seeing if any audiogame pioneers or current developers of audiogames would like to appear in a special segment, where theyd be feetured as ghosts/zombies the the plaier would have to take down. Also, would any audiogames devs like to allow me to use any zomby vocals theyve created for theyre games?I think this could be a nice nodd and tribute to all the people whove worked vary hard over the years to bring us all of the audiogames we enjoy playing. Hay all, sorry again for bumping a topic that I previously posted in, but I have some news regarding Remnant.first of all, the slightly bad news.remnant has been delaied; again, but this time its due to mother nature. You see, my area has been experiencing lots of unusually heavy amounts of violent lightning storms, and my pc doesnt like them that much, that and the chance of the power going out or frying my hard drive is to high to wrisk using my pc during these storms.Due to this, the release date for remnant 3.0 has been set back to. july. Also getting in contact with theOnlyPKMNmaster is like pulling teath, as he hasnt responded to PMs, but hes working on psycho strike at the moment, plus he probably has colege finals coming up, so I cant really blame him.It would be a real bummer to have to make the main character silent for this final chapter, as he has to interact with Remnant during two of the ending
s.Okay, the good news...despite the setbacks, remnant 3.0 is still coming along pretty nicely. All but a few of the viruses are done and most of the levels are at least on the stage list with only the final boss levels not appearing their yet.almost all cutsceens are done as well; again with the exception of the boss ones.I decided not to use the voice samples I talked about in my last post, as I came up with a slightly cooler intro than what I originally planned on.Ill be working on remnant over the next month or so, to get everything done, and I may even be able to get an objective view on the campaign soon from someone whos never plaied AAC or Remnant before as well. The only thing that can push back the release date at this point is when theOnlyPKMNmaster can record lines, but, please, dont get mad at him if he cant before July, just know that Remnant 3.0 will be out when its really and truely ready.Som
ething Ive been thinking about for a while... and to help make up for the delays...Would anyone be interested in adding their voice to remnant?I was kind of thinking about seeing if any audiogame pioneers or current developers of audiogames would like to appear in a special segment, where theyd be feetured as ghosts/zombies that the plaier would have to take down. Also, would any audiogames devs like to allow me to use any zomby vocals theyve created for theyre games?I think this could be a nice nodd and tribute to all the people whove worked vary hard over the years to bring us all of the audiogames we enjoy playing. Also audiogames.net forum admens, or hek, anyone is welcome to appear, so long as they have the ability to record themselves, and use something like sendspace or dropbox to drop me the lines.Well thats it for now, later!

Re: Psycho Strike - New Strategy/Action game

@JLove,Gonna tell you a little secret...sort of an open secret, actually. You dont need a blazing-fast processor or tons and tons of ram to handle windows 7. Pretty much any post-2004 computer that could run XP and even something like Jaws 4.0 could run Windows 7. This is particularly true if, using said Windows 7 OS, you used NVDA instead of jaws.I totally agree that buying both a computer and a new OS can get a bit spendy, particularly if your old machine still works well. I just happen to disagree that this is a necessity; you can, in many cases, get hold of an OS without having to buy a newer machine that comes with windows 8 pre-loaded.Microsoft, and many other companies, want you to believe that you actually need all this new power under the hood in order to support newer versions of their operating system. Its not true. You need all that power if you want the best visual resolution, the best framerate-per-second graphics rendering, and t
o be able to play the newest and best games. The basic operating system does keep getting bigger and more robust, but it does not demand so much of your machine that having something with slightly lower specs is going to make your OS lag. You wouldnt want windows 8.1 and Jaws 15 on a machine with only 256 or 512DDR, its true, but thats probably more because of Jaws than the OS.All this goes to say that if you want to update your OS without completely changing your machine, you probably can, and youll find its considerably cheaper to do so.Ill give Paladin of the Sky, at least, one strong point in its favour. If you know the game, you can finish it in under twenty hours. If you dont, tack oon another three to ten hours depending on how fast or slow you go. For twenty-five bucks, thirty hours of gameplay is really nothing to sneeze at. The quality of that gameplay may be spotty in places, but theres a lot of it, and a lot of
work obviously went into that game.A lot of work might, at the time, have gone into Shades of Doom as well, though I dont think so. Theres a game you can finish in under four hours if youre quick, a game in which you run around right-angled rooms and passages and enjoy a 2d shooter with no up-and-down mechanics (which is why I say its not 3d, technically). There are something like three songs in the game, two of which are basically just clones of each other; theres a little snip of a Pink Floyd tune when you enter the elevator; there are something like nine different types of enemies, not including the boss, and the game costs twenty bucks I think. I bet you dollars to doughnuts that someone could put together a first-person shooter that totally obliterates Shades of Doom by way of detail, immersion and even straight-up quality, but they wouldnt dare charge twice the money for it.What Im driving at here is that its sort o
f a forked stick were dealing with. Twenty to thirty dollars is common for a developer to charge, but some games offer far more for the money than others do (quality, time for gameplay, variations, etc). Developers feel like charging less may get them ripped off; players feel like twenty-five bucks is a lot of money for a mediocre game, and they might even be right. Players also seem to feel as if paying any amount of money for a game, regardless of its quality, entitles them to yell when something doesnt go their way. It doesnt.Sorry, rambling a little, I suppose. I guess the whole reason I brought this up is that I would one day like to see game price more accurately reflect what the game actually contains. Something like Q9, cute as it is, might be ten bucks; Shades of Doom might be fifteen; Paladin of the Sky might keep its twenty-five-dollar price tag, owing to its sheer breadth and length. At least then thered be a bit more consistency, and the p
rice being charged would give at least a glimpse of what a player could expect from the game.

Re: Survey. What are the 10 best audiogames of history.

@Dark, regarding Monkey Business there is absolutely nothing 3d about the game. Im not sure why but a lot of VI gamers seem to make that mistake. I think a lot of them dont know the difference between 2d and 3d and frequently mistakenly label Monkey Business a 3d game when it is from start to finish 2d in design. That said, Ill agree one reason it fails is the navigation aids are horrible. They are functionally useful if one practices with them a while, but despite having purchased that game several years ago I havent played it more than a handful of times because I hate the navigation aids in the game. Game wise it is fun, an interesting little game, but it needs to be rewritten with a better navigation system and perhaps some better keyboard commands Particular with laptop keyboards that are lacking certain keys the game needs to play..As for the list of games I understood Fabian to mean what did we think were the 10 best games in history. I
didnt necessarily consider historical contribution when developing my list, but merely wrote up a list of some of the best games to play from my point of view. If historical significants is important Ill have to rethink my list.

Re: Survey. What are the 10 best audiogames of history.

Ah Tom, fare enough on the dimentional aspect of monkey business, it is a very long time sinse i played the game because indeed of those navigational issues you mention (sinse with my spacial coordination I always found the thing a total confusion especially as compared to something like Sarah). I o recall you have to jump ontop of rocks and one level involves climbing ledges, but equally as shown by the 1D side scrollers such as Q9 where you still can jump and hit things in the air, its possible to simulate the y axis by affectively having a timer toggle on the x axis, which is probably what is done in Monkey business as well, I just never really got far enough along to particularly get involved with jumping the acid pits or some of the later bits of the game. With the purpose of the top ten in this topic, I sort of assumed it was more about game historical significance with Fabis comments in the first post: FabiG94 wrote:Hello.I want everyone to comment here, what are the 10 best audiogames of histori. This is my top 10.I base to build it on several criteria like the plot, the story, the gameplay, the influence they have marked on the Market, quality, and also the time they were released, with the latter I mean if they were novel at the time, or if they made history in the world of audiogames.greetings.Admitedly there is a conflict here, sinse if I was thinking of plot and story games like A dark room and Paladin of the skies would definitely be in there, while if gameplay, that would be an utterly different list, which is why I went with the historical significance idea.

Re: Survey. What are the 10 best audiogames of history.

@Fabi, that was exactly what I thought yo meant and why I said historical significance though as a brief note all the games I mention and indeed all on this site are not British even though they use the English language. Some developers such as Somethinelse who make Pappasangre are like me based in Britain, however others are based in different English speaking countries, many like Jim Kitchin, Aprone and David Greenwood are American, while Jason Alan who developed Entombed and Ian Humphries with his spoonbill games are Australian. Many others come from countries where English is not the native language but develop games in English anyway, or develop games with different language options, both the Ticonblu team behind inquisitor and the Shard workshop people who developed Zero site are Italian, Vipgameszone are I believe based in Israil, while Jeanluc Pontico who made Sound Rts is french etc.

Hello all,Id like to appologize for the horrible way I acted on the forums in the last couple of days. All of what I said in those topics was inexcusable, terrible, and way over the top, so I feel the need to appologize to you all. I am not normally the immature, trollish idiot I made myself out to be in the two topics I posted on last night and the day before. But what I did shows me that while Im trying to get myself together, I am not quite there yet, and Ill admit I have to grow up some. But I promise, nothing of such proportions will be posted by me again. It seemed fun (yeah, really, not), when I was doing it, but when I got up this morning and read over it I was disgusted with myself. I had no right to post what I posted, and I appologize with everything in me to all, and I mean everyone who even didnt have to read that set of posts. I made a real blamed fool of myself, rather than making any points. I completely underst
and if you dont accept this, after the idiot I made myself out to be. I completely understand. But for those of you who some how find it in you to accept this, I give you all of my gratitude, and thank you for being so forgiving and kind people. Again. Im extremely ashamed of the horrible crap I did and said here, and even the fact that the moderators gave me another chance is a blessing that I am extremely fortunate to even get. That being said, I will from now on act my age, 16. I hate what I did here, all the people I let down and destroyed, it hurts me just as much as it hurts them since I was monstrous enough to post that stuff. That said, I hope with all my heart that I can once again joke, game, compete with, and generally have a good time with this community of kind hearted, supportive, mature, game loving people that I so brutally let down. But if what I did has, in fact, damaged my reputation here, I wish you all the best in all of
your works. You are a truly great group of people, and dont let anyone tell you otherwise.Sincerely,Severestormsteve1.

Hello.Ill eventually get a new version of Windows, when I have a reason to have Windows around for another purpose besides games. Im actually considering WIndows 10, but well see what happens with that release.Hardware upgrading isnt an issue, since my 2013 Macbook Air can handle Windows just fine. The XP support isnt bothering me anymore. Like I said, Ive been running games in the Wine emulator under OS X. I just cant figure out why the game freezes. Is it the new dll engine thing that was put into the game? Its very puzzling.

Re: Survey. What are the 10 best audiogames of history.

Well, there have been quite a number of audio games down through the years I have really liked for various reasons. However, rather than putting them into a definitive top 10 list Ill just name the games I really enjoy, and some explanation as to why I keep coming back to them again and again. To begin with one of my all time favorite audio games has got to be Lone Wolf. I have always been interested in navel/submarine warfare games like Silent Steel, Aces of the Deep, etc so when GMA came out with Lone Wolf in 1999 I obviously got it as soon as finances would allow. Ive never regretted the purchase of that game because I have spent many hours playing the stock missions as well as crafting my own missions. Plus currently there are several other user contributed missions available for the game so it remains one of the most replayable games I own.The second game on my list of favorites is also another title by GMA. That would of course be Shades of Doom. I c
ame from a sighted gaming experience and did manage to play the original Doom, Jedi Knight, Quake, and a few other First-person shooters before losing my sight so Shades of Doom was something of a return to the games I had known and played as a teenager. While Shades of Doom is a bit dated now at the time it was developed it was hugely revolutionary.Third, I dont think any list of audio games would be complete without Entombed. It is a surprisingly decent audio version of a roguelike roll playing game, set in an underground dungeon, and while it has its issues I think it gets a lot of credit for being the first to do what it does in an accessible format. Few audio games have captured my attention for as long and as so completely as Entombed. In a slightly different direction I think Jim Kitchens renditions of popular board games such as Life, Monopoly, Shoots and Ladders, etc get an honorable mention as being great games to spend the time on a rainy day. Now
that I am divorced, dont always have someone around to spend time with, I find myself more and more playing a few of Jims games like Monopoly or Life to pass the time. They are simple, entertaining, and fun.Another one of Jims games I enjoy is Football game. I am of course a fan of American Football so do enjoy playing his football game managing a team and trying to get them through the standard 16 game season, into the play-offs, and eventually winning the Super Bowl assuming I get that far. Thats pretty fun, but I find myself often as not into the game more during the football season than any other time of year.Although, I have not played Castaways in quite some time it is still a game I really enjoy. Not sure why I dont play it more, but I think it is also a first of its kind. As has been said before it is the closest a VI gamer can get to Dwarf Fortress and similar mainstream games and I think was well done. I have toiled away many ho
urs playing that game when it came out, and probably will return to that game eventually.I suppose there are a number of other games I could mention, but Im not really up to writing a novel right now so will let this serve as a starting place. I can come back tot his thread and add more games to the above list as I think of them.

Re: I'm blind and want to develop a very complex game

The need to be able to test something frequently to help motivate yourself is actually not uncommon amongst developers. That is while something called agile and test driven development is popular with many developers. For agile, the idea is to create a usable application or modify it in about a 2 to 4 week period of time. This is possible because you limit yourself only to doing what is possible within that very limited time. Test driven development is also popular for other reasons, but one side benefit of it is that you can always test your code--though you will likely only be testing a single function at a time. It sounds like you have found the approach that works best for you. Though I would like to offer a suggestion for your consideration. It sounds like you have really fleshed out your game story and ideas quite well. Coding is a difficult task, but designing the user interface and the game story and i
deas is also difficult. If you reach a point where you feel like you are not making as much progress as you want on your game, you might want to look for other experienced developers to work with you. You then could serve as the over all game architect with the other developers helping you break down the game into pieces that could be coded in something like 2 to 4 weeks. You could then work with them on the coding, which would also help you learn more about coding. That might possibly help you turn more of your game into something playable and testable more quickly as well as help possibly accelerate your learning.Over time, you might bring in other people with other skills to help with the work and also provide you with additional people you can learn from.If you decide you want to do something like that at some point, but feel uncertain how to get things going and structured, let me know and I would be willing to help out. Others might also be
willing to assist. But again, this is only a suggestion to consider if you feel you want to make more progress on the game more quickly.

Can you explain more what you mean by explore Are you looking to explore the commits or branches? As far as executables, Ive not dealt with storing executables on github. Most of the time, weve stored the source code on github and then we compile the code on the local machine after we pull down the source code. You likely could store other elements of the application on github like sound. It shouldnt be any different than storing images on github which people do for projects.

argh, this is hard! well I only have a select few of games that I could say. first off, is the bk seeries. while the story wasnt great in the first 2 titles, its the gameplay that counted for me. bk3 is my favorite, but now that I lost my save file Ill need to do it all over again! then, we have the choice of games games. I really enjoy playing them, and buy their games and hosted games as soon as they come out, though Ive unfortunately let my selection of games get a bit outdated. next theres alter aeon with the mush z pack. I really dont like playing muds with no sound at all, this is why I enjoy alter so much. also psycho strike, and while there isnt that much to do the game sertainly has potential and could be turned into something awesome.

Re: I'm blind and want to develop a very complex game

@Genroa: My games only similarity to Pokémon is that you can explore and you will often be ambushed by others seeking a fight. Thats it. @dhruv: Thanks for the clarification. I wouldnt have gotten it anyways—$800 is far more than I would be willing to pay for something I could get for free that would be accessible.@Hector: I do indeed have a great deal of the plot laid out in my mind. I was going to write this as a novel series for ten years before I finally got the epiphany about it being far better suited to a game. Id already been thinking about what a game based on this story would be like (and honestly, its probably going to be a series of games with all the stuff Ive come up with for this world over the years, plus an online version where you can customise your own character and go on unique adventures through the world in question), but with the tools at my fingertips, I now have to start thinking about what keys will do which things. Being that Ive been exposed to plenty of console games in the sense that Ive been present while my family played them, I had been thinking of my game being one for the XBox or Play Station or something like that. (Ambitious, I know but there you are. Thats part of why I was after graphics eventually.) The upside to building it for a computer is you have more keys to work with. The downside is you have more keys to assign or not assign to certain things. Ill work with that once Ive finished my refresher course in BGT. I had considered that previously, yes. I would have to give it some very serious thought before bringing others into the fold, however. Everyone here has their own projects and their own lives, and much as I would appreciate the help, I dont want to give the impression Im expecting more from the other parties than they could give. Im also, admittedly, rather paranoid when it comes to my story and its setting, characters and such. Im a writer first and plagiarism is something Ive been wary of since I came online and started posting to writing sites, mostly fanfiction since, as I said, Im very protective of my original works. I hope none of you take offense at this, and this doesnt mean Im not going to ask for help. It just means Id have to think about it very carefully before I did and Id need to know for sure I could trust the other person/people involved. That went on a bit, haha.
