Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

@948I wouldn't oversimplify socialism.  Everything I've seen suggests that it doesn't scale up like you'd think.  It can be done at scale, but it doesn't seem to work out as $x per citizen no matter how many citizens you have. Also cost of housing is complicated too, being as what happens with that is that it's about how many people want to live somewhere more than anything. You're an oil and natural gas producer.  This makes fuel cheap, but at the cost of what is likely to be some rather big problems over the next 30 to 40 years.  There are other countries--I believe Norway is one--that are able to pull socialism-like policies off because of oil, and it will be interesting as in interesting times over the next while, being as oil is now at a place where it is going to become fundamentally devalued.I think the U.S. could use some socialistic policies, but just, it's not so simple as waving a magic wand and saying hey U.S. get your shit together and decide you want it.  Deciding we wanted it as a country would go a good way toward it, but not as far as it needs to.

@17Csound with a midi keyboard is fun.  I don't know how productive it is, as my interest is DSP stuff along the lines of synthizer, not getting music out.  Read the manual.  If you don't feel lost, it's for you.  Experimenting will tell you a lot more than I can here, though I will say that half these languages are the kind of thing you need a specialized background or the right kind of experiences to get much out of.

If you are in the right place and the laws are friendly, you can get your hands on a stand mixer and do upwards of 20 batches of cookies a day with a standard home oven. Make the dough in the morning, then it's just shifting trays in and out all day long.  But being able to sell them depends on way too many local circumstances and if you already have a social network.Making candy of various sorts is also doable, though you need advanced cooking skills to be comfortable with molten sugar.  But the cost for doing it is very little, 99% of the ingredient list is literally giant bags of white sugar.  But some of it can ship across the country very well.I've never personally executed on either of these plans, so I have no idea how to market. For an odder one, there is a market for interesting bongs.  Some friends and I played with the idea of doing them in bamboo and beeswax, and as far as I know it's a good idea: at the time, equivalent versions were selling for around $100, and it's like $20 of materials each.  The downside is that you have to be able to source quality bamboo, which turns out to be harder than it sounds.Edit: selling for $100, not $10. Damn the missing zero.

Um, why did that need the moderation tag? I'm just curious. @Mayana, Agreed 150%. I'm pretty sure Manamon Player won't become a moderator, as he'''s also been knowwn to revive topics unnecessarly. I've seen 3 defining posts from him, but I've seen more posts from him saying agreed with post x. Also judging by said agreed with x post replies, it seems that Manamon Player is ok with cloning and so on, which is the exact thing  a moderator is supposed to stamp out. So far I'd go for Ironcross, with the other two being more neutral. Munawar seems to generally be calm about things, minus the recent topic with Simba, and Evil chocolate cookie, seems to be away from some of the old topics i read. She seems more into helping out the Apple blind community in terms of accessibility. Cross over the years has seem to calm a lot down. IIts also worth noting he's an admin on Bloodstorm, and he had to handle a pretty simular topic like the one outlined and he was fair, and cleaned it up iin a timely fashion. The two people I'd like to see become moderators, will most likely never come back, and that's quite unfortunate. However I think these 3 are some pretty decent choices.

Re: ways to earn some money?

There are transcription services where you can transcribe audio to text and get money for that. I don't know the logistics of all of it, how much you get, etc, but it's a thing. Also, there is a wide world of freelance opportunities out there. I primarily look at programming-related jobs because that's what I do, but there are opportunities for writing and other artistic pursuits, as well as accounting, customer service, translation, and you can probably find some of those transcription jobs there as well. Also voice acting if you have a studio-grade microphone, but I'd guess you don't since it's not something that most people have lying around unless they specifically do voice acting or music-related things. I'm not sure of all the freelance websites out there, but www.upwork.com looks to be good.

ways to earn some money?

Hey guys. So as we all know, the world is a disaster right now. Getting a job is going to be a lot harder than usual. In the meantime, do you know of any ways I could earn a little money? I want to earn enough for a small Braille display eventually. I thought of making some kind of Apple related training course or something like that, but I wouldn't know where to earn money from something like that. If I could satisfy the requirements, I could try to get on with Apple, but I currently don't have the space for a computer desk, and I don't want to be treated like someone who can't do anything useful for the rest of my life. I thought maybe you guys may have some suggestions. I'm not asking for handouts or anything like that, just advice.

Re: Moderator Application: Summer, 2020

Moderation:In case it wasn't clear, the opinions shared by users here about candidates will in and of themselves not be what cause us to reject or accept someone, not unless an opinion or evidence presented somehow invalidates someone's candidacy in some way. Example, if it turned out that someone had hard evidence that candidate #9 was illegally forking and was passing stuff around under the radar just out of sight, I think that's worth knowing. This is not a popularity contest. I believe that the most official way to make this stick will be internal criteria, where certain parts of the applications are given point values. Some will just be a pass/fail (did you provide us the info? if so, you get the points), while some of them will be on a grading scale. Between Carter, Aaron and myself, it should be easy enough to work out one or two new moderators. I can't state strongly enough that this is not a popularity contest. Even if seventy-eight of you come out in favour of someone, that doesn't mean they'll get in. It means we're very glad to hear from you and it's nice to see what the community at large seems to think, but that is not the only or even the largest criterion that's at play here.

Re: Nvda is in the windows store

As long as you download from the official website and run the screen reader without administrative rights, I don't see the issue. This store version could work provided you don't need access to web browsers, but I hope the web browser issue can be resolved at some point. If we're going to be so afraid because NVDA is open source, it's time to tell companies to give up all the other open source software such as Linux. Seriously, this is fucking ridiculous!Remember that you also have access to Narrator, which is constantly getting better. I could easily imagine someone using a combination of NVDA and Narrator. I love the fact I have two good screen readers on my system, both of which are free and not controlled by a greedy corporation that's only interested in milking as much money from governments and other organizations as humanly possible.

Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

I think in the earlies the media here tried to promote fear into people, because they basically went ahead and say that 32000 people would die, and half a million would be infected. Sounds like small numbers compared to the states, right? Well keep in mind our population is around 1.5 million, so they basicallly said a third of our population would be down, and around .5 of our population would die. Again, sounds small, right? But again. Take iinto account the number of people who wouldn't take the time to do that math, or the ignorant over scared people. Even as cases start springing back up, they're trying to promote an Anti-Venezuelan agenda, as it is believed that illegal migrants are bringing the virus here. I agree its a threat, but I think the media here is trying to scare everyone.Oh, and in reality, only 8 people died, and its questionable whether or not the virus caused it, as most of them had sevear pre-existing conditions. Now, elections are just around the corner, and I'm worried. You see, currently, the PNM, or People's National Movement is in power, but I'm worried, that if the Opposition party, the United National Congress comes into office, the virus would run rampant. You see, the opposition leader, is a mini-Trump, to summarise. She demanded we open the borders, 2 months ago, she said that the sun is the reason the virus didn't thrive, and neglected our Prime Minister's measures, and in the earlies, she voted no to the Prime Minister's request to talk to the people in the parliiment about the virus. So with those things considered, I'm just pretty worried that I won't have the ability to go to KFC if she comes back into play. Mind you, she has decent views about other issues. Her party is more left than the current PNM administration, so she's all into big spending. She had a land for the landless programme, she gave away free laptops and she wants to bring those programmes back. I forgot to mention she was Prime minister from twenty ten to 15.Oh, that also ties into how socialism can work. We only have a GDP of around 35 Billion US dollars, and god forbids the priice of oil tanks its down to 15 Billion, and we have free primary, secondary and post secondary education. Free healthcare, we have cheap ass water and electriiciity. I think its around 2 US cents per litre or so, could be more, but its still dog cheap. We have housing, for as low as a hundred TT dollars. You can convert that if you want, oh, and that house is in a suburban neighbourhood mind you, and many more programmes, including the afformentioned free laptops to all students, which is around 12 thousand laptops per year, there's free land, there's small business grants, etc etc. So America that spends a trilliion dollars on defense alone can more than damn well afford to take care of their people.

Re: How to make music with out midi keyboard?

HAVE YOU TRIED DIGGING INTO TRACKERS? A FIEW ARE SURPRISINGLY ACCESSIBLE ENOUGH to be useful for serious stuff, at least if you're not dealing with effects. I use famitracker for nes music and bambootracker for fm music (it's ment for pc98 specificly, but it's braud ranging instrument support allows it to work for instruments from things like the sega genesis and the like, in fact the next version will add support for mucom88, the driver that Yuzo koshiro used for his music). to get instruments, I usually extracted .opm files from mdx files, then I used wolstand's bank editor to extract them to .wopni (one of the formats supported by bambootracker). I made at least a hundred bambootracker modules in various instrument sets, ranging from predictable zun early touhou type shit to prepriatary psgs like the one namco used in their arcade games.

Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

@943For what it's worth, we know for 100% certainty that immunity lasts at least 5 months, and every day that goes by without definitely documented second infections is one more day on that number.  Everything so far w.r.t. reinfection has been attributed to errors in testing and such a small case number that it's safe to disregard it as not real.  It's almost certainly going to last much longer than that anyhow, when scientists say "we don't know", they don't mean "We don't know and it's bad", they literally just mean we don't know.  Everything reputable I've seen suggests that it will be long lasting immunity once the vaccine exists, but they can't say that because the cost of being wrong if that turns out not to be the case is stupendously bad.@945The media has been downplaying it consistently.  Every time the media says "Experts say it can't get this bad" it goes ahead and gets that bad.  Being as most of the media coverage until very recently has been continuously "It can't get worse, we promise" followed by it getting worse, I'm not sure how that's pumping fear into anything.Of course the worst part is, the media has been repeating experts.  And those experts were right, and if this had been literally any other developed country we'd not be where we are now.  But Trump fucked it up repeatedly, and even now that he's following the script somewhat he can't actually just follow the script for more than a few days at a time.  SO, welcome to 2020, your real life reality tv show as government.  Worked out so well for all of us.

Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

Things I can't do in programming: anything games related, anything that requires custom hardware, anything graphical.  Anything that relies on observing tons and tons of metrics.  Machine learning beyond a basic level, due to visual tools.  Very advanced performance analysis, which relies on being able to examine visual data in ways that screen readers can't manage and can't be made to manage.  The entire subfield of frontend is off the table.  The entire subfield of hardware design is off the table.  Embedded systems is mostly off the table.  Being on call many places is off the table.  Game programming is off the table.  Working on any project that's on a platform without a screen reader, or which would need screen reader accessibility for testing, likewise off the table, which is why I didn't pursue the couple opportunities I had to help work on custom web browser engines.  Going into a new job I always start with "what tools do you use" so I can find out if there's anything inaccessible.  When slack breaks accessibility for a few days now and then I'm screwed until they fix it, same for a vast majority of other tools, most of which put way less effort into it than Slack does (at least when Slack breaks, they treat my feedback as holy shit fix this now. GitHub doesn't even listen).Things I can't do efficiently in programming: Lisp (emacspeak technically allows it but would take years), iOS development (Apple dropped the ball), Android anything (Google dropped the ball with Talkback), C# (Microsoft is still picking up the ball they dropped, with respect to VS).  Yes these things can be done.  Yes I could learn to do them.  But a sighted colleague can be as efficient as I'd be in a month in 4 or 5 hours with any of them. These are just the lists off the top of my head.  Programming is one of the most accessible fields you can go into and is one of the very few ways that a blind person can make more money than a vast majority of sighted people.  But if I thought about this more I could expand those lists.  I could also list lots of jobs blind people can't have, like fighter pilot or surgeon or firefighter, but chose the above in the interest of making people realize that this isn't hypothetical.  I've done very well for myself, well enough that I'm probably going to be retired before 50, but I'm still limited.  There's a lot of things I flat out can't do unless I have vision to do them with, and I don't have to reach for the stereotypical list of driving/video games/etc that I and others always rely on first.  This is just stuff in my field, I haven't even talked about the accessibility of higher education.Kjsisco, I feel sorry for you, that you were apparently raised in an environment that's so fucked up that you have managed to turn not thinking of yourself as that blind person into not wanting vision, and somehow seem to think that the rest of us wanting vision means we're unhappy.  Happiness is harder if you're blind, just because getting basic things does take more work, but you'll find lots and lots of happy, well-adjusted blind people want vision, and it has nothing to do with identity or seeing themselves as that blind guy or however you want to put it.  I think the real problem here is that you don't understand the value of vision, and you don't understand how we could value vision without making our identity into "Hi, I'm visually impaired".  Say that you don't identify as that blind person all you want, but whoever taught you not to do that also seems to have taught you that as soon as you acknowledge limitations that you can't get past you'll be unhappy, which isn't true.

Re: Monthly Chat - August, 2020

@11, nah, I know of at least one blind person who had it.Generally, things are going ok for me. My job, while not particularly mentally engaging, keeps me away from doing a lot of leisure things because I'm often tired when I return home. It's not even the work itself which is tiring, but the commute, which is nearly an hour each way, sometimes longer if I take Paratransit. So while things are actually good and relatively stable in my life, I haven't been able to do much gaming, reading, or watching TV shows or whatever. I hope this is something that will smooth out over time, i.e. I'll adjust a bit more and not feel like I just want to veg out and do nothing when I get home, because I've always said that I never wanted to be one of those people whose life is basically work, eat, sleep, repeat. I see myself going down that path, and it saddens me, but also, it's money, and also also, it feels good to actually be contributing to society in a meaningful way.

I am unsure about Ironcross, to be honest. There have been times in the past when he was overly brash and, at least seemingly, quick to anger. He has definitely improved a lot since the time of his bans, but still retains his blunt nature, which I admit often earns him thumbs ups from me as a member, but could maybe lead to some trouble, and would definitely give him some "haters", were he to become a mod. However, he appears to be confident, very much not a pushover. As much as I hate the "We have to get tough on crime!" logic in politics, it's clear that this forum needs it. Currently we are in this in-between when there are more rules and moderation than there used to be, but bitching and trolling about that is left to smolder and then burn, until not only is there a forest fire, but a big chunk of the forest is gone, just so admins don't get accused of taking people's rights to start campfires away. Ironcross probably wouldn't care nearly as much about what the complainers think of him, allowing him to focus more on making this place a nice option for developers. And also, with Ironcross on the mod team, Jayde would no doubt no longer be getting 99 % of the hate. As far as experience goes, I managed a company for about ten years with no major issues. I tend to look at both sides of the issue and sometimes plays Devil's Advocate just to force the other side to be more open about their position.I've been a forum member since 2006 and have seen first-hand how this forum used to be.I also have a wealth of management experience under my belt (even currently where I work) and have a drive for improving things. My opinion on the situation:Jill has no right to attack John no matter what she thinks of his projects. Constructive criticism is one thing, but the message outlined in the OP suggests this is a personal attack. On account of her history with the 90-day ban, I would most likely ban her for six months.John is equally to blame in this situation by using excessive profanity, but I can understand that he might have been upset. On account of this, perhaps a warning (skipping the cautions) so that if this happens again, he'll get a seven-day ban. There's only so much pushing around one can take before they flip.I view Juan's comment as passive aggressive ("John you can be whatever you are and it doesn't matter if I think it's wrong"), but on account of his language barrier I would issue a caution here. His seeming attack on John's identity wasn't called for and he could have just as well left that out and not lost the meaning to the rest of his post.I've used Discord a few times a while ago and hope they've updated it's accessibility over time.

Just Bing it?Haha, only joking. I have no clue, sorry mate. There used to be a blind-programmers group on Google Groups. Not sure if that one is still active though.Generally, once you've picked your language of choice, there's support groups for that particular language.Don't forget, for text-based programming languages - even the horrible ones like C, the act of writing code is always accessible; it's text after all. Your mileage will of course vary with things like IDEs, and compilation tools. I've heard that XCode is its own special kind of hell. Also, there's Stack Overflow et al for your questioning needs. Not specifically blind focussed obviously, but their aim is to answer all possible programming questions, and I've seen lots of a11y-related programming questions answered with great alacrity.

@9I love your suggestions!!I avoided a points system for 2 reasons: Firstly, I hoped the code would give others something not too complicated to learn from. Secondly, I wanted it all self-voicing, and I'd have to break that paradigm if I was going to put points in.I would happily palm reading all numbers off to the screen reader, and put in a points system, if you think that would be a spin off worth having? I could then put in a high score system, so people could compete or whatever.@6I'm so glad you're enjoying it! I've never played number games, but I too find it weirdly addictive.@12No, it's not, but I suspect it's the resampling thing you've mentioned before, so I was going to wait for the next version of Synthizer before I started opening issues.@ironcross32Thanks for being technical support on this one while we've been taking full advantage of our two annual days of sunshine, here in rainy england. Re: Your choice? Would you restore your vision?

Actually, you can't hold every job you want.Even in the fields like computer programming, the interviewers would be looking at you first when they want to take out the weakest candidates. This is confirmed by a sighted developer, who teaches me.What he said was "You'll have to prepare harder for the interview, because when it comes to taking out the candidates, they'll look at you first."Not to mention, you can't do anything frontend related, which are easier but impossible for us because just by inclusion of a blind developer these become a job for two people, instead of one, while backend programming is not exactly easy.Mind you, the only reason why I am giving so many examples of programming is because I'm most familiar with this field. As for the negativity? I don't observe any negativity within me personally regarding the blindness, and the discussion for which this topic was created is hypothetical anyway. it's not like there's an actual solution to the problem, which I can go to an hospital and get it applied to me, why would I be so negative about something like that?As for the question about children? definitely cure them of this problem if you have the solution. Let's be honest, the childhood years, from two to twelve are the most unhappy ones. Not that the teenage years are any easier, but at least by that point you get used to it.

Open this link, and find the file called "Common Bugs in Blind Friendly Mode"https://cloud.owncube.com/s/4Smo8cNC7qq6P7mAdditionally, since you say you are running this on a Win 10 on a Mac, why not just run it on Mac itself? 2020-08-01 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: The Synthizer Thread

It depends what you're talking about.  Ambience tracks are usually prebaked and just faded between, which you can do.  Reverb isn't to do with panning at all, though they themselves can be panned.Perhaps it is better to call the sorts of things you're talking about special cases, but English doesn't really have a good shorthand for that other than weird.  Yes, everyone does something like them.  But everyone does it slightly differently, and will want something slightly different from it.  Libraries can't handle the "I want feature x, but it needs to..." for every user, so I stick to the things that are clear and give you the tools to build the others yourself. What I'm hearing is that you want to solve the problem of modelling sources as points overall, but that's not so easily solved.  In the 2d case, say a pit in a sidescroller, you have to do it by scanning down from the player to find out if they're above a pit or not.  In fact in that case you can't actually just play multiple copies of the pit sound because, when you do that, they add together and sound like one pit at the wrong place instead.  SO that's a whole complicated scan down then scan to the left/right pit finding algorithm that decides where the point closest to the player on the pit even is and what pit we currently care about, which assumes that your game is a 2d sidescroller like BK3 using tiles.  What if it's not a sidescroller?  What if it's not using tiles? For ambiance tracks, you can't pan them without them being mono.  There are stereo panning algorithms that can pan stereo tracks, but they're not that great.  But even if we say synthizer is now going to handle that crossfade, which might be in scope in some fashion, it's still not necessarily accurate to assume that everyone's going to want boxes with min/max x and y either. My job with Synthizer isn't to provide every feature.  It's to do the things that no one else can do for lack of math/soft realtime experience, and to add the things that need to be in Synthizer to let you build on top of it.  Will I eventually re-open the volumetric sources/really deep panning customization discussion?  Maybe.  But the kind of stuff you're talking about wanting is game specific and you can implement it in 50 lines of Python to meet your game's specific requirements without me.  Frankly, you could implement all of the conversions that Synthizer does to get from a 3d point to azimuth and elevation and control a PannedSource yourself in Python in 50 lines, as well.

Re: Nvda is in the windows store

Skype is never more usable than Unigram, despite any unlabelled buttons. The only major issue I have with it is the files section, but at least I don't have 15 seconds of lag when switching chats for half a year. Give me this classic interface and I'll take it any day. Just today I was making a comment on how annoying Skype became where you use it by pressing tab 15 times, then enter, then tab 3 times again, and so on and how it reminds me of swiping on a touch screen to find something. Granted, this is the case with any web app, but using something on Desktop should be a lot quicker with many more shortcuts available. For example, to share your system audio in a call, in the new Skype you first have to go into the active call, tab until you reach the screen share button, tab until you reach the include audio  checkbox, shift tab until you reach start sharing. In the old one, after getting used to how the app works, you'd just press Alt Q, y, and be done. But the biggest of all annoyances is with the contacts list. No first letter navigation, no home or end, no anything. You looking for somebody starting with V but don't know the exact spelling, tough luck, depending on how large your list is you might have to spam down arrow 50 times. In any case, I don't assume this is going to change for the better anytime soon, and honestly using these web apps became way faster and more productive on a mobile than on a PC. At least there you have touch exploration to find something once you memorize the layout, which is better than shift tabbing or tabbing 20 times. This is kind of OT though so it can be discussed in some other topic.

I'd be interested too. I'd never really experienced the beta, so news about it is minimal for me.

Re: Nvda is in the windows store

@nidza07, Skype's more accessible than Unigram. Despite being known as the accessible Telegram client for Windows, it suffers from accessibility issues itself. Unlabeled buttons is the biggest issue for me.

Re: Is it possible for me to speak with someone's else voice?

@nsoft15, Ahhh, still not getting the point I see. It's public and available, but for your own voice, not others! You'd definitely have to get permission, all the time, no exceptions when deepfaking a voice that isn't yours. The developers of said tools advise you themselves to be careful, and actually your point doesn't even hold strong (not all the way, at least). Anyone remember Adobe VOCO? That was announced in like 2016 I think, but still isn't even available to today. Wonder why that is, huh?If you're *that* interested in this technology, use the software you want, and experiment on your own voice (and your voice alone)!

Re: Code 7 - Episodes 2 & 3 Out Now

The game isn't working for me. I load it up, press control v, and then must wait about 5 minutes before the menu music plays. When it does, I don't get any text-to-speech, and pressing the arrows does nothing except play some clicking noises. What's going on? I'm using a 2013 MacBook Air running Windows 10.

Re: Is it possible for me to speak with someone's else voice?

So, why those developers made tthose voice learning projects, and made them available publicly if those things are happening?Morf vox has the ability to learn voice, this is called voice doctor or somethhing like that, and anyone can buy it, so i thing if they are selling things like this, it means nothing is wrong with using someone's voice recording in  those programs.
