Making of Audiowizards Multiplayer

Hi! My name is Martti Kandelin. I’ve been a member of the AudioWizards Multiplayer team since last Autumn, and while working most of my time as the game’s graphics artist, I have been recently moved to the role of Beta test coordinator. Now, while we wait for the Beta-Test Day, we thought it would be a good idea to tell a short story about how we reached this point.The project originates from Autumn 2019, in Turku University of Applied Sciences, here in Finland, during a Capstone Innovation Project course. We were initially seven students, but in January we grew to nine, including programmers, a networker, graphic designers, and one marketer. The main goal of the project was to figure out how to make an interesting multiplayer audio game. We didn’t have prior experience in audio games, and neither did we know what it felt like to play a game using only audio, nor how few are accessible out of most current games for blind and visually impaired players. The first couple of months we thought about different concepts, two of the most interesting being a player versus player and a players versus A.I. game. Time was running fast, and we knew programming A.I. could put, because of its difficulty, the whole project at risk. So we took the other option. Now, looking backwards, I think we made the right decision. We also liked the previous AudioWizards and the funny stories of Saundaman, so we decided to use that world as a guideline but under a new concept, so to say.After winter holidays, the concept, development roles, tasks and the project schedule were kind of clear. We got nice tutoring from David, the CEO of myTrueSound and from Jani, Axel and Joonas, who were behind the original AudioWizards. We met David every week, and the rest once a month. They were critical with us, but also gave us the freedom to create, test and innovate, because that was the point of the whole Capstone Course after all.We worked applying sprint periods and meetings every Tuesday and Friday. First came the movement, map layout, sound design and further re-definition of the game design. Later came the networking, controls, game mechanics, accessibility issues and so on. We have learned a lot, and by the end of the project we knew much more about game design and development. Work was fluent, but we tried to be critical with our own work as much as we could.As part of the Capstone Course we had to present our project in one pitching and two Demo Day competitions. Competition was tight, since there were 40 other teams besides us. Pitching didn’t go so well, I guess. First Demo Day went much better, even though we didn’t win. Second Demo Day was affected by COVID-19, but our team actually won the best presentation video award, and that felt nice. The Covid-19 also affected the way we work, and we had to change the way we meet and share ideas and tasks, since suddenly everything was remote.After the Capstone Course the prototype was working, but certainly we were far away from Beta. Me and Jakub, an excellent programmer by the way, were contracted by myTrueSound to get it done, and here Jani, Axel and Joonas came to join us and helped towards our goal.We are very glad at the moment. In a few days the closed Beta will launch, and nearly a hundred testers will gain access to it. Wow this got big quite fast! Well let's answer some questions.Controller support:Unfortunately the PC version doesn't have controller support due to some time constraints. If this becomes highly requested, however, we will consider adding it in the case we do an update later.Linux & Mac support:Admittely Linux support is probably something we will never do for AudioWizards. As much as we would like to enable the game on all platforms, such as Linux, it is a high stretch from both the technical and financial stand point for us. Comparatively, these are the same reasons we didn't launch for Mac. We would like to apologize for all the interested players and fans with either Linux or Mac. Hopefully we could return to take a look on these platforms in some form in the future.Soundtrack:This is something we agree. Including all the hasle that comes with setting up Steam and purchasing both the game and soundtrack to gain access to the latter. We'll see if there is anything we can do to provide the soundtrack through another channel. As always, thanks a lot for all the support and questions!

Hello everyone! You might have already noticed but AudioWizards just got updated with 1.1.0 patch. As the updated has now hit online we think this is a great opportunity to talk about stuff that’s going on at the moment.The patch 1.1.0, named “Saundaman is Missing!”, includes 5 new story levels and 3 hats for the Endless Mode as well some minor adjustments and bug fixes. In the story levels, you solve the mystery behind Saundaman’s sudden disappearance with the help of audio logs that have seemingly been left behind. The levels are, of course, ramped up in difficulty so now is a good chance to test out your skills!Now is also a good chance to test the game out in case you haven’t yet as AudioWizards is going on SALE in both Apple App Store & Google Play! The sale is only for a limited time in both stores (7 days in Play Store & 16 days App Store) so be quick! The sale should be starting either today or tomorrow.We have also reviewed each entry that we got for the Design Competition but as not to drag out this thread, we will make a separate announcement about it later this week soon after. Thanks for the honest opinion! Most of us here in myTrueSound agree too that GoldGun was a rather disappointing product in the end. We don't consider it as a waste however as the feedback we got (both positive and, especially, not so positive) helped us refine AudioWizards as a much better game. We have also understood some of the flaws AudioWizards had and just like with GoldGun we will use it as a learning opportunity to better polish our next project. As a developer, keep the feedback and criticism coming! Sometimes it's hard to notice things that are wrong in your own creations but that's what well-thought feedback and community is for. There are also no word limit so you could technically write an entire book if you wanted (if someone does I promise to read it from the beginning lol).To give out some example plots; How was the Altto Academy founded or How does Saundaman do his special brew tea.Now that I think about, I'll might edit the instructions on the website to be a bit more specific. While we are not yet ready to ship the latest update, in the meantime, we have something in store for you all game enthusiasts…Enter the AudioWizards Design Competition! Inspired by the music competition we held last Summer and from all the great feedback we've received, this time we got not only one but six categories to choose from and submit your ideas and plans for! While your tools stay pretty much the same throughout the whole game, the changes come from the different scenarios you will be facing through your journey. We also want AudioWizards to have a high skill ceiling for the players who really want to master the game.

Hello everyone! At the end of May we started a competition for our incoming game AudioWizards where people from blind & visually impaired communities could submit their tracks to have a chance for them to be featured on the game. Well, after a long time pondering and listening to 42 amazing songs, we have now found the winners! Tons of thanks to everyone who participated. This competition was a huge success and we are really happy with the results. The decisions were definitely not easy as everyone was really talented and had their own visions about how game should sound like. We might do something similar in the future so fear not to participate again! Once again, thank you everyone who took a part in this journey!Everyone who participated should have been contacted by email. First of all, a huge thanks to all AudioWizards music competition participants! We got a total of 36 awesome tracks submitted by a total of 33 artists. That’s awesome!   Thanks to everyone who shared and talked about the competition. This wouldn’t have been a success without you! We were surprised by the activity and we are grateful for all the support! All the tracks took a different perspective while staying true to the theme.  We are still reviewing all the tracks but, in the meantime, we were working on a website where all the tracks are available for you to listen.
