Re: What is Everyone's Religious Beliefs

As I think I stated in an earlier topic, I think that no matter how long humanity survives, there will always be things that we don't know, and may never know for certain. Some people think we go on to another place when we die, others think we simply cease to exist. I don't know. I hope for something more after death, whatever it may be, but there's no proof one way or the other.I'm a live and let live kind of guy. As long as other people aren't trying to shove their religion/beliefs down my throat, I'm fine with them. I wouldn't mind talking about god/religion/spirituality with someone. I try to respect the beliefs of others as much as I can.

Re: What is Everyone's Religious Beliefs

When I was younger, I used to say that I was an atheist. Eventually, though, I realized that I was only saying that because I hated being dragged to church by my parents. Now, I know myself to be agnostic.I don't believe that it's possible to prove or disprove, objectively and undeniably, the existence of one or more gods. Certainly not now, and probably not ever. One of the definitions of "faith" is "belief that is not based on proof", and that is a kind of belief that I'm not capable of.Even if the words of all the different holy books were given to the people by some god, directly or through a prophet, and even if the current versions are identical to the original written versions, there might have been a time when the words were passed down orally from generation to generation. In that time, the words may have been altered in the retelling, deliberately or otherwise.

Re: Should Porn Be Banned On College Campuses?

I agree with most people here. The only people this will be effective against is those who don't know how to get around the blocks, and those who don't want to put too much effort into getting around the blocks. Even if you give people school laptops with programs installed to limit what can be viewed, people will always find ways around them if they really want to. Unless you can completely lock down the computer, so the student can't get access to the hardware, can't modify the operating system or any installed programs, or modify critical settings, it's not going to work. Even then, someone will probably eventually find a vulnerability in the security of the system that will let them change whatever they want.TL;DR: Site blocking is futile.

I chose to go with the stainless steel model for the extra durability.I would definitely say that you should take a look at what is available for the Apple Watch. Make sure that the apps you want to use are available for the Apple Watch.Apple says that the Series 4 Watch has an S4 processor that is "up to 2x faster than S3". The Series 4 has slightly larger screen sizes, and has ECG functionality built in.

Re: to wear or not to wear an apple watch, that is the question

Another thing that I forgot to mention is that the Apple Watch can vibrate the time. I'm not sure if you have to have VoiceOver on or not, but if you double tap the screen while the screen is off, the watch will vibrate in a specific pattern. There are two or three different choices. The one I use uses long vibrations for ten hours/minutes, and short vibrations for 1 hour/minute. So if it were 19:42 (7:42 PM), the watch would use 1 long vibration, 9 short vibrations, then 4 long vibrations, and 2 short vibrations, for 19:42. Really useful. So the Watch can be a really useful tool, especially where you might not be able to pull out your phone. (IMO)

I like the Apple Watch a lot. In fact, I just bought my series 4 Watch about half an hour ago, heh. I got the first generation watch a few months after it came out, and I've enjoyed using it. It makes checking notifications so convenient, and there are lots of accessible apps for it. You can also control playback on your phone from your watch if you have your phone in your pocket, and a lot of other cool stuff.

If I recall correctly, it's about $80 USD, but (going by the hundreds of positive reviews I've seen) very worth the price.

I think what a lot of people are forgetting is that this notetaker is primarily intended for developing countries, where people probably don't have as much money. In this situation, Linux is really the best way to go, because it's completely free, and can be modified by anyone, so it could create more interest in the open source community. Also, the Pi is running an ARM processor, so unless people have access to an ARM based PC, I don't think theft will be an issue.Although, ARM based PCs are becoming more likely, or so I've heard, but it'll probably be a while before we see any of them, if at all.

Also, if more people start using Defender, then the malware writers will have less AV products to try to break. On the other hand, I've been hearing a lot of discussion lately about third party antivirus products causing more problems than they solve, by introducing more vulnerabilities into the system. Re: Beginning my yourney with Linux

Unfortunately, Espeak-ng isn't currently available from the main repos, so you'll have to get the pkgbuilds from AUR and build it yourself.I don't know if you know about the Arch User repository (AUR) at this point, so I'll tell you what you need to do.The first thing you'll wont is an AUR helper. The easiest one I know of is called "Pacaur", so that's the one I'll use in the examples here.Go to the following page:https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pacaur/Choose "Download snapshot" and save the file. Then in a console or in a terminal window, change to the directory where the file was saved, and extract the file with "tar -xvf pacaur.tar.gz"The extraction should've created another directory called "pacaur", so "cd" to it.Then' type the following command:makepkg -iThis will
make the package file, and then install it with Pacman.Once that's done, things get easier, as Pacaur will automate the rest of the installation for you.To make sure that Espeak-NG will work like the old Espeak at higher speeds, we need to install the "libsonic-git" package, so type:pacaur -S libsonic-gitFollow the prompts, and once that's done, Type the following two lines, following the prompts as before:pacaur -S pcaudiolib-gitpacaur -S espeak-ng-gitOnce those are installed, you're pretty much done. ALl you need to do is either kill and restart speech-dispatcher and espeakup, or restart your machine at this point. HTH.

After we managed to get it installed, Orca runs, but it seems like Orca will randomly exit when focus changes to a menu or a new window. Very frustrating.I am currently using Arch Linux as my distro, with Xfce as the desktop environment, and dispite a few minor issues and annoyances, things are working well for me. I also had a small amount of lag when navigating with Orca, though that was completely fixed when I switched from Espeak to Espeak-NG.

Re: GNOME 3

I don't see how Firefox under Linux is "nearly unusable." I use it all the time. True, it has its issues, sometimes Orca will freeze up on large sites like Amazon or Facebook, but in my experience, it's far from unusable. Also, it's absolutely false that Orca can't be interrupted. The control key works the way it does everywhere else, to silence speech. Since I got ESpeak-NG working, Orca starts speaking the instant I press a key. Before, there was a very slight delay, so I'm happy about that.

Installing Windows Updates would permanently slow it down to a crawl. Just ... Aweful. It had 256MB of RAM. I don't remember what kind of HDD capacity it had.

Re: Qube not posting tweets.

Well, I suppose it could be called a bug. If I'm right, then the real problem is that there have been enough changes to the Twitter API over the last year or so to prevent the Qube from posting tweets. The author would probably just have to update the Qube to the latest Twitter API specifications to get it working again.

My guess is that the Twitter API was changed significantly enough to break the Qube. If that's the case, then the client will need to be updated before it can be used to send tweets again.

I would never install an addon of this kind, and not just because it installs cracked software. As a programmer, I enjoy being able to examine the source code of NVDA addons before I install them, so the fact that the core of this addon is made up of binaries is highly suspicious. Another one of those things that just boggles the mind. Generally, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is.

I have the iPhone/iPad model of the Perixx Periboard 805L. They have two models, one for iThingies, and one for everything else. They also have other keyboard models, but I don't know anything about them. The other keyboard I have is the Logitech K480. It can also connect to up to three devices, and each pairing can be set to either iOS or Android/Microsoft/everything else mode. Instead of using function keys to switch between pairings, it has a dial on the left side of the keyboard. Near the right edge of the keyboard, and above the rest of the keys, there are two special keys which control the "mode" the keyboard is in. Left=non-iOS mode, right=iOS mode. The power switch is on the back of the keyboard. It uses standard batteries, and they last quite a long time.Unfortunately, it's rather heavy for a Bluetooth keyboard, so maybe not the best Bluetooth keyboard for mobile use, but around the house, it's great.HTH.

Hi Steve,A very good post.I definitely agree that we have the right to express our opinions and give feedback. However, I feel that we really need to make sure that we express ourselves in a non-hostile manner, when possible. I definitely see where some of those people are coming from, though. I'm not naming any names, but I've thought more than once that many people in the blind community seem to have this sense of entitlement, and when some of them don't get what they feel they deserve, they can become quite nasty, and it has left me feeling appalled on several occasions, that people around my age, and sometimes even older, can suddenly revert to the behavior of spoiled children. That may sound harsh, but there you have it.This is the real world, and in the real world, we're not entitled to everything. We can ask for things to change, but throwing a fit over it is only going to make things worse for us, and may even give the rest of the com

When downloading from a server that anyone can upload to, the best policy would be to assume that any file that could contain executable content of any kind is infected. At the very least, you should scan the files with a tool such as VirusTotal.com. I thought that by now, people would know better than to run files downloaded from public servers, but apparently not.

I myself haven't been into software piracy in over a decade, and mostly, I agree with Figment here. For products that are currently supported and available, I  either choose to buy the product, or I choose not to buy it. For products that aren't currently supported, though, I won't say no to using them, if I don't have to patch the product, or download a key generator. The thing is, there is no DRM of any kind on the Eloquence DLL, so if you can figure out how to interface to it, you can use it. Sort of like my views on downloading movies and TV shows with description, instead of buying them. I can't buy what they won't sell.

From what I can find, it does. I did find some forum posts complaining of incorrect display and formatting of docx files, but they are all years old, and all concern version 4.x of LibreOffice. As I recall, LibreOffice is now up to version 5.2.1, so things have probably improved significantly since then.

Agreed, Turtlepower17. The media loves to blow this sort of thing way out of proportion, making it sound really menacing and scary, but it isn't all bad. I won't say that there isn't criminal activity going on in the dark web, because there definitely is, but that's only one side of the story. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that the media came up with the deep/dark web terms themselves, for the purpose of making it sound dangerous.

Re: 1 thing holding me back from switching to Linux.

I'm with Devinprater. I actually use Arch Linux, the distro that Sonar is loosely based on. I say loosely because Sonar is based on Manjaro Linux, and Manjaro is based on Arch.I switched in March of last year, and I haven't looked back. True, I still have a Mac, but these days, I usually only use it to manage my iPhone and Apple Watch, and to play Windows games in a VM. At least 95% of my daily activity is on Linux.Like all platforms, it does have a few accessibility bugs here and there, but I wouldn't consider any of them showstoppers. For the first time Linux user, I'd recommend either Sonar or Ubuntu. For people who are a little more familiar with Linux, though, I'd go with Arch Linux, or possibly even Gentoo.

Re: Security: what are you using?

The problem with some of this thinking is that for several years now, malware authors have been attempting to get malicious ads placed on legitimate advertising networks (a practice commonly called malvertising). Also, sites can be hacked, and their pages changed to distribute malware, and the worst part is that now you don't even necessarily have to click anything to start the infection. The moment you go to an infected site, it may try a number of exploits against your machine, until it is successful in installing malware.I also wish Avast was accessible. It seems to be very good, but it doesn't do me much good if I can't navigate the interface. NVDA object nav is useless. You have to use screen navigation, and even then, you can't get to all of the content. One thing AVast does have going for it, is that it has a scanner that scans pages before they are displayed, and prevents you from viewing the page if a threat is detected.

Some ISPs block all traffic on port 25, because it is the standard (unsecured) SMTP port, so spammers and their bots try to connect to vulnerable or misconfigured servers to send spam messages. Try ports 587 or 465. Your only other option is to use a VPN or proxy of some kind to bypass the blocks.

True, it is running in a VM, but I don't have a copy running unvirtualized to test with ATM.Too bad. I ALSO used to use this trick in Win7.

Well, since it sounds like you've tried just about everything to fix the problem, I was going to suggest that it might be a sign that the drive is starting to fail, but you've also said the problem is showing up on more than one drive. I can only suggest that you try running chkdsk, if you haven't already. That can find corrupted Windows system files, though I'm not sure if it will fix permissions.Just in case, though, if you aren't already (and you really should), you may want to at least back up all of your files, including your custom configuration files for your apps.

I used to have these, but I seem to have lost them at some point in the last year or two.I checked everywhere I could think to look, even in really old Time Machine backups, but no luck. Sorry! The only person I know that might still have them is Harrylst, who I got them from originally.

Re: Dell XPS 13 or Macbook Pro 13

As for PCs...I can't say anything on the XPS 13 in particular, having never owned one. However, I can say that I used to buy Dell machines, as they worked well for me. Later, though, I started hearing a lot of horror stories about Dell, their tech support and repair services, from people I know. My latest laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P855-S5200, which works well for me. These days, I'd probably look at offerings from companies such as HP, Toshiba, Asus and maybe others, like Lenovo.I also go to CNET for reviews. In the end, though, it's really up to personal preference. I like to try and get my hands on a machine before I buy, but if that's not possible, I usually do my own research to find the machine with the best specs for me, and check out reviews from sites I think I can trust.
