It's acting like nothin was installed. Also speaking of Kodi. I swear there was a Kodi package in the AUR of V17.6 with the screenreader ready to go and all that? Or if not, am I imagning this one?

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

You know, I'm actually going to try this iso again. Something says I should give it another shot now that the server's up, things could've very easily changed and we may be in business to flash the image to the pi sd card with that method. And here we go. Iso works great, seems like the program thought my partition table was massively screwed on the sd card which it wasn't, just an inconsistency. Although, fdisk on the jenux iso was erroring out, so I had gotten hold of a Vinux live distro to use fdisk and at the time gparted to prepare the disk, and now it works. And now we're downloading. I decided to go ahead and download the full arch distro as I had wanted to before, and if kodi is not included I could easily install that.

@jaceK, true, but when I answered that I didn't want encryption, it still assumed I wanted encryption for my home directory and swap -- when in fact I didn't need swap, for one, and I didn't want encryption on my home directory. This is exactly why this guy needs to stop using shell scripts and use an actual installer program that's been tested by (probably) well over a thousand people.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Nitpicking nowWHy is there no mate-tweak installed by default? Also, Flight is wa too quiet.Lastly, on a fresh install, @Queens. freedos-accessible doesn't appear to do anything and the other "Personal computer system" can't find the target, on a fresh install from the ISO.Now if I had a fast internet connection and could  be resonably sure this was solid as hell, I'd probably stick it on a spare machine because aside from a few errors during install, gdm stuffwhen GDM's not used AFFAIK, the system installs fine, it boots, it even made me pay attention when selecting where to install because /sr0 wasn't the virtual drive, that was the /stop one apparently that got given the whole 80 gigs. So once figured that out, problem solved and I won't leap on the 'THIS IS A PILE OF SHIT THAT IS TOTALLY BROKEN' argument. Also, @Ethin: I ran through an install this morning, and it asked me a yes/no question on if it wanted me to enable encryption, so I picked no. Now I dunno if the script was updated or if Hacker could mirror the script elsewhere if his site goes down againwhich may be a great idea btw, but there's certainly been tweaks and it actually works fine on vbox or me. But, YMMV on this. I'm running a Mate install on 2GB of virtual RAM for the system and a 80 gig VHD and it runs perfectly smooth here. Also, @Jack: I'd try with something like a Mac version of wget or something similar just to rule out Safari.

By the way, Nash's server is up. I'm starting ithis all over from the beginning and totally giving it the benefit of the doubt, since to be fair, Mac OSX probably screwed me over by auto-expanding the .tar.gz. Yet another reason to hate Safari, don't ask concerning Chhrome. It's a fine browser, but it's more of a resource-hog on mac osx so I prefer something slightly more lightweight when downloading large files. Well, I have hopefully disabled Safari's auto-expanding and we *should* be good to go.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

So now I download the file manually, because I'm fed up with this failing. The Mac's bullshit autoextract thing turns it into root.tar before I even see it do its thing. Ok, so maybe that isn't so bad. Then, having really nothing else to copy it to, I copy root.tar to /dev/disk2s2 the large partition. I do the mounting again, and then do:sudo bsdtar tf root.tarAnd it seems to do everything, my partition has some 10gb used after deleting root.tar, but now my card just won't boot in the Pi. I mean there's no speech feedback, after trying both a usb soundcard and analog headphones. What the actual hell is going on. Again, I would just hand an img over to the raspberryvi.org folks. They have enough space to host the stuff along with auto-expand scripts. This is just ridiculous. Unless I'm missing something. I know the iso had its issues, but I didn't expect that the img would as well.Don't get me wrong, I could always install rasbian lite again, but I've gone through the mate/piespeakup/omx code time and again and have no desire to do that all over. No, I do not have that image to fall back to. I backed up the contents I actually needed and just destroyed it on the card because I didn't really need it anymore.

The ISO hrew errors and made assumptions; too many, in fact. First it assumed I needed a swap partition when I didn't. Second, it assumed I needed an encrypted swap partition when, again, I did not. It also assumed I needed an encrypted home directory, when, for that test, I did not. So yes, take this project down an get a trusted installer that works the best, and then ask others to test it. Don't try making your own.@82, you have a point. I was, however, talking about arch Linux specifically, not any of its derivative works (i.e. Manjaro). The core Arch Linux install process is designed to teach users how Linux works from an installer viewpoint, and it does that quite well. The only systems or tutorials that do that better are Gentoo and Linux from Scratch. It may seem daunting, but once you learn the install process and have practiced it many times, you get used to it, and are practically able to do it from memory. Gentoo doesn't have an installer, either -- primarily because it can't have one because it is far too flexible. Arch Linux technically can't (and shouldn't) have one either because, again, it is extremely flexible. If you absolutely need an installer, make it as flexible and customizable as possible (i.e. provide a user-friendly interface, but make it possible to enter custom package groups and lists and so on, and don't assume anything).

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

There's nothing inherently wrong with an installer on Arch, or any distro.Caveat: If it is set up to work right. Manjaro's installer is fantastic for an Arch-based distro. Not everyone wants to learn how to install Arch manually. To a total newcomer, the install page on the wiki is daunting with so many steps and commands, and if you make a typo partitioning oyour HD or setting things up you risk royally breaking the system. Is it good to know how to manually install Arch? Yes. Is it absolutely required? No. Because at the end of the day, an installer is a way to protect against typos or skipping over steps in a long install guide, or making mistakes while installling it.That being said, having grabbed this (finally) I'm not that impressed. I'd much rather have a proven, trusted installer, or something like that, than one that throws errors up and feels like it was rushed, to my way of thinking.@Hacker: I'd argue pull down the ISO, THOROUGHLY test it, if you have to go with another graphical installer that works 100% do it, then reupload it to prove you've fixed the errors. An installer is a fine, fine idea, but not when it throws errors. I'm not saying every installer's perfect, because even Debian/Ubuntu based ones have issues and oddities, and Fedora's can be trouble at times. But there's a plethora of installers out there to use.@Ethin: Put yourself in the shoes of somebody who knows zero about Arch, has just heard about it and wants to try it out. You'd get scared off by attitudes like yours. Yes, the Arch wiki is fantastic,. but the attitude of FUCK OFF INSTALLER elitism is a big, big problem with Arch. Consider this, there's a great many Arch-based distros that do, in fact have working installers, that enable you to easily go through the same install processs in a comfortable, familiar environment at your own pacewithout needing to refer back to the wiki constantly, they are popular distros, see Manjaro for example. No, it's not pure arch, but Manjaro make it easy to get into Arch and get a system up and running.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

So, I'm trying this ISO in VMware and I'm not impressed. The ISO still throws errors here and there for cat and head, violates the spirit of Arch Linux (if it doesn't have an installer, its not meant for one), and assumes encrypted swap (and since I assigned 16 GB of RAM), and yeah, not impressed at all. Oh, and it also enforces home directory encryption? This is *exactly* why installers are bad for business for Arch Linux and why people should either learn to stay away from it or learn the process! Its not that hard, once you get used to it.

Hello,I have burned the new image file I downloaded a couple of days ago to a DVD. However, when I run the Raspberry Pi script and choose my 64 GB micro SD card, I get a bunch of write failed and something about failed to set file flag messages. What am I doing wrong? This is incredibly frustrating! The micro SD card is connected to my computer with a USB SD reader.editAfter waiting a while, I received a message stating the base operating system was written and then it asked me about wireless networks. Thinking I was done, I said no and was sent back to the Jenux menu. Is the card ready to be inserted into a Raspberry Pi? What do I do, just plug it in along with a USB sound card and a keyboard? It doesn't support the built-in sound card? Will it work on the Raspberry Pi model 3B+? Is the Wi-Fi supported? I'll have to start out using Wi-Fi because getting to an ethernet port is inconvenient at the moment. I'm going to order it today.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Honestly would not recommend using a virtual machine to do the image flash. It doesn't even like my sd card (it still thinks there are two partitions when I clearly got rid of them and reformatted the drive. But at least it recognizes the the card is there in the first place. Just have to get it to work now is the problem. But usb or drive support royally sucks in any virtual machine preinstallation. Plus there's really no reason to go virtual when flashing the sd image. The installation iso is under a gig so you can burn it to a disk.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

I'm stuck. I downloaded the iso disk image again but can't use it to flash an image to my SD card for a Raspberry Pi. When I load the iso into VMware Player, I have to press enter a couple of times after the virtual machine is started and then check to see if the virtual sound card is connected. If it's not, I have to connect it and then I hear speech. When I choose the option to flash a raspberry pi image, I can't find my USB drive in the list. All I have is a 40 GB partition and a 700 something MB one. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting my drive using the VMware Player menus, but that doesn't fix it. I also can't figure out how to back out of that menu once I'm there. Control d and/or escape does nothing. Also, how do I navigate with this screen reader? All I can do is tab and arrow around. I can't read status information onscreen.

Hi, at Jack, post 66: If you'd like to mirror the iso, go ahead, shoot, mirror the entire directory tree if you'd like. Also, a few hours ago, I fixed the installer so it will propperly detect, partition, and format the card, even on a vm, so you shouldn't have to worry about cleaning raspbian's fluff off of your card. All I'll say is, who would've thought that an f instead of an e would've screwed up the device detection that badly. Anyways, happy holidays to all. Also, as of yesterday at around 18:00, the access stick nvda and ocr modules have been updated to take advantage of the newest nvda version, including addons, as well as bumping tesseract to version 4.0 in the ocr module.

Probably oughta curve at least a bit of the bandwidth thrown at that server, lol. As for the Pi, Chris you can use the installer to install any of the images to a card which will automate the process for you. I personally just need to get my card formatted back into one partition to get rid of the Rasbian leftovers.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

@63 no, upgrading a specific package in arch is not supported. Only do full system upgrades. You can install a new package without upgrading your entire system though, for examplepacman -S espeakupwill install only the espeakup package andpacman -Syu espeakupwill perform a full system upgrade and install espeakup.Technically, you can dopacman -Sy espeakupwhich will get the newest version of espeakup whilst leaving all your other packages untouched, but it's a parcial upgrade and not supported. By not supported I mean it can break your entire system if you're unlucky, for example if the new package has been compyled against newer libraries, which then get upgraded as well, but other software needs the old libraries. Seehttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … nsupportedfor more details

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

If you got any more sources @Queens, send them on over my way. I've a whole jumbo bag of popcorn to eat through. Also, as a side note, it bugs me when people claim stuf like Mate or, even Arch isn't accesible without specialized distros. On the Ubuntu side of things a stock Mate image, all you do is turn Orca on and go from there. Sure, it doesn't have all the fancy accessible stuff but, ya know, you set it up yourself. Also, Manjaro itself is good. I like the idea of this Jenux one too, and I noted it has Ratpoison. Does it come with Strychnine? Because out of the box, Ratpoison isn't the world's most accessible window manager. It's insanely fast, yes, and it's insanely awesome, but it needs Strychnine to work with Orca. Or did when I tested it 6 months ago?@Hacker: Again.Instead of saying oh, download the ISO, and I'd have to wait 19 hours, why not simply list the packages it comes with, or goes and fetches by default.on the site? Sonarr used to do that for their distro and it was an easy way to say alright, Sonarr has X version of packages. Also, @Queens, general Arch Q, since I'm playing around with a Talking Arch system that's being set up in a VM. Can I leave the packages alone and tell an Arch system I only want *THE MOST IMPORTANT* security updates like I can on Ubuntu>?

I started to install the system in vmware and the Iso downloaded fast here and do not know, the download of all scripts is faster than what ever file I download from what ever server in windows, here reakes 6 mb or so and other downloads can not get over, well, 2 mb.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Okay, @48: I got no issue with respins. What I got an issue with is, well, the fact I had issues with1. The download speed. I am on a 80 mb/s connection writing this, Every other download goes at 3+ mb/s so why, exactly, is the ISO stuck at sub 20 kb/s? It's not location. I can pull down files from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan and so forth, or, all over the world, at speeds of 1mb/s or greater, yet yours is the only file that will not, consistently, crack 100 kb/s on my conection, using wget, Firefox's own DL manager and other download managers.I find it convenient you said okay, it's an Arch respin then didn't answer my other questions about the scripts. Yes, you could go get and inspect the scripts, butthat takes knowledge and not everyone knows how or is willing to learn how to do that.Next up, @whoever mentioned the Sonarr falling out, care to send a source for that?

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Hi, the tar file is an image of the armv8a rootfs. To extract this image to a card, use a linux distribution capable of formatting and writing to ext4. First, use fdisk to partition the card. Make two partitions, one from 512B to 100M formatted as fat32, and the other from 100M to the remainder of the card, formatted as ext4. Once the partitions are formatted, mount partition 2 on /mnt or wherever, create a directory under that mountpoint called boot, mount partition 1 on that boot directory you just made, cd to the first mountpoint, and runln -s /dev/stdin /dev/st0;curl https://nashcentral.duckdns.org:8100/au … oot.tar.gz|bsdtar -xzIf you get an error about bsdtar: command not found, install bsdtar from your package manager. On arch, do pacman -S bsdtarOnce the file is downloaded and extracted, unmount both partitions, unplug your card, plug in your new card, USB audio device and keyboard, and apply power.Since this image uses the mainline kernel, it will only run on pi 3 and newer. It uses the fenrir screen reader for speech output. For audio output, I would recommend the use of a USB sound card if not running headless. The default login is username alarm, password alarm. For root access, sudo is used instead of su.

at post 41, RTT entertainment: Once you hear screen reader on, hit control alt d to get to the desktop. Afterwards, you can hit alt f1 to get to the menu bar, which contains, from left to right, applications, places, and system menus. Once you bring up the menus, up and down move between categories like accessories, games, office, internet, and so on, while right expands a menu. Also, the keyboard shortcuts properties dialog located under system>preferences>hardware>keyboard shortcuts will give you a rundown on which shortcuts you can use, allowing you to customize them to your liking.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Hi, at post 43, this is indeed an arch respin. The iso is created using a modified version of the talking arch iso creation process. To get a list of installed packages, run the following: pacman -Qn|cut -f 1 -d \ As for the download speed, keep in mind that your location, connection quality and my server load, among other factors contribute to download speed. Since I do not have vmware installed, I did not create the appliance using vmware. Since an OVA file is simply a tar archive, feel free to extract the vmdk and create a fresh vm in vmware, using the virtual disk from the ova as your hard disk. Alternatively, feel free to use the iso to run a fresh install under vmware. At post 45 and everyone who is concerned, your paranoia gives me hope that this world isn't as technically illiterate as it seems.:) As I mentioned a few posts ago, feel free to examine the content of the iso and scripts to validate that they are not doing anything malicious. Also, under the autobuild/linux directory, the packages that are installed for each software preset are in the pkg files. To verify that these are what is shipped in the image, you can run curl -O https://nashcentral.duckdns.org:8100/au … g.mate;sed -i s/'pacstrap \/mnt '/'pacman --print-format %n -Sp '/g pkg.mate;pacman -Qn|cut -f 1 -d \ >mypkgs;./pkg.mate> srvpkgs;diff mypkgs srvpkgsThe lines with a < in front are the packages that you have installed that are not part of the script on the server, while the ones with > in front are the ones that are on the server, but not on your system. Also, keep in mind that if you are feeling extra paranoid, run tcpdump, wireshark, or whatever sniffer you like on the image and iso during install or normal operation.

Jace asked the same questions I did, and they still haven't been answered. As a result I am starting to distrust the validity or veracity of the "success stories" that have bee posted on here, as well as the validity and veracity of the ISO itself. At least with Talking Arch, you have the core arch system and can do with it what you like, whereas this is pretty much just an arch respin with not much of an advantage and a shady history.

Does this have working install scripts? Is there a list of packages that I could use to, oh, I don't know, strip away the fat and get it running on an already set up Arch system?Lastly, What's with the single or double figure DL rates? I can pull 800-900 kb/s on a DL from other sites since I switched connections. Thisis more like 15-20 kb/s maxed out. What's with that, exactly? I'm a little concerned by such a slow DL rate, and it's not just Jenux's stuff, I've had extremely slow DL speeds from them in the past even up till writing this post

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

I am quite curious exactly how this system is the "next-gen". "Next-gen" what? The next-gen Linux distribution? I think not. (Especially with distributions like Elementary OS taking the rains these days.) "Next-gen" arch? Again, I think not; you could (with some work) create a duplicate of the installed system with a manually installed arch Linux system. So, my questions, before I actually put this to the test in a virtual machine:* Do the scripts take into account error conditions and do appropriate error handling, so we don't have rogue shell scripts?* What makes this better than either the factory default Talking Arch ISO or a custom-built one?* What, exactly, is "next gen"?* Is this ISO equipped for duel-, triple-, and so on booting? The reason I have asked these questions is because I have had bad experiences with ISOs from nash central, and would like to ensure that the system runs all commands correctly with appropriate flags passed on the command line, and generates no errors of any kind (as best as we know). If your answer to the last question is 'no' or anything in the negative, then I'd advise you to set the ISO up for such a scenario, because your going to get a lot of those scenarios.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Hi, In response to your comment, the iso can be inspected using any linux distribution with squashfs-tools and the ability to read ext4 filesystems. The scripts that are responsible for the installation are /usr/bin/androidbuild, /usr/bin/autobuild, /usr/bin/automenu, /usr/bin/pibuild, and /usr/bin/winreset. The data used to do the installations can be inspected and cloned if desired at https://nashcentral.duckdns.org:8100/autobuildres. The installer is simply a shell script. Which of my projects have you gotten "not good stuff" from? If so, please let me know and I will do my best to investigate. To the best of my knowledge, none of my or JenniOS' software contain malware or other undesirable features. Although my access to JenniOS systems are limited, I will do my best to investigate, in cooperation  with those who are responsible for those systems, any possible reports of malware, hacking, or other issues that may negatively effect users of our systems, services, or software.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

I have a few USB flash drives I can use, so it would be great if you could make a 32 bit UEFI version. Ideally, I'd like to use a flash drive instead of a DVD. I think that was one of my last blank DVD R disks.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

hmm, @24: I can try to put together a 32-bit uefi bootable version for pre-2008 macs. Alternatively, if you have either another DVD or flash drive, I can try to put together a bootstrap image that has just enough brains to bootstrap the standard jenux version. After selecting install android, you get a choice of android 7.1, 8.1, or 9.0, all with talkback enabled out of the box to install, along with a talking recovery environment.

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Hi, this all depends on how you installed your graphical environment. For gnome, just ensure gnome is started through startx or gdm, and hit alt windows s, after which you should hear "screen reader on". For mate and other environments where this does not work, hit alt f2 in mate or gnome, type in killall speech-dispatcher, hit enter, and do the alt windows s command, or after running killall speech-dispatcher, hit alt f2 again and put in orca --replace. If using xinit to start your X environment, before using startx to bring up your environment, add the following to your shell initialization file: export GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridgeThis will also fix orca starting without reading anything if your chosen DE does not use a GTK file manager. If using a QT based desktop, install qt-at-spi and addexport QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1to your shell initialization file, above startx. Hth

Re: Jenux OS, The "Next Jen!"

Thank you for those instructions. Those were very helpful and should be written down on the website. Now I'm confused. There are a bunch of different options to install Android, install to a Raspberry Pi, etc. Does this distro run on the Raspberry Pi with all the applications and speech? Also, what is the Android option? What version of Android is this? Now that I know the disk works properly, does anyone know how to make it work with my 2006 Mac Mini? If I get it to work, can I use the built-in sound card and will it work with the built-in Wi-Fi? It's not really convenient for me to connect an RJ45 cable because the router/modem combo is in a really awkward space.
