Well... it's the tendency for people who support a product to defend
it vehemently against all criticisms, often irrationally or with ad

It's something I've seen quite a bit of on various product-related

To get all potential benefits from Toslink you really must disconnect
the coax cable. Otherwise it will provide a permanent path for
electrical noise via the ground connector -which is exactly what the
Toslink is good at avoiding! (I assume your DAC doesn't disconnect
unused ground inputs. 99% don't.)

In my system Toslink sounds exactly like the coax when the coax is
connected. If I disconnect the coax and listen to Toslink the system
now sound way better than before. The effect is subtle when A/B'ing,
but very clear when listening for longer sessions. (This is despite
Toslinks worse jitter performance on paper -I speculate that the
Toslink jitter is more decorrelated from the audio signal.)

Inguz, will that happen any time soon? I'll reiterate my offer to be a

You're right, and I think another aspect of it is the anonymity -
people are more willing to be rude when they are unlikely to suffer any
real repercussions, or even be identified.

This is an excellent point - now that you mention it one reason I chose
to buy a SB was the active and vocal community, as well as the open
source aspect. It's clear you can get lots of help here if you need
it.

There was a bit of fanboy-ism being displayed towards the end, which is
another common phenomenon on boards of this type. But all in all,
despite getting a bit off-topic (mea culpa, in part) I also thought it
was an interesting thread.

I think there is a general problem with bulletin boards in that the
majority of the message is always missing - the facial expressions, the
tone of voice and the inbuilt politeness that most people have. This one
is better than most, people do apologise if they believe they have
offended someone. I've had some disagreements where people really just

Not always, unless you like paying for waste heat. A quick calculation
shows that an Infrant NV would cost £105 per year less to run in
electricty costs than an average PC based server. Based on 50w vs. 200w
24/7/365 at 8p per KWHr. I didn't believe this figure when I first
calculated it!. Electricty is bound to be cheaper in the US, but it's
still going to be a significant cost.

As a regular lurker and very occasional contributor in this forum, I
don't think its dead at all... I enjoy the sparring between viewpoints
which can never be reconciled, and which only sometimes get out of
hand.

Bear in mind that the slim forums as a whole are some of the best
behaved and most intelligent that I for one have come across on the
internet, I'd hate to see too much sedative applied.

Moderation is a tricky one, especially when deeply held views are being
stated. It might seem reasonable to take the rude words and insults out,
but how outrageous and "stupid" does an opinion have to be before it
gets censored?

And, if we're going to delete abuse, say, why only in the Audiophiles
corner?

Do you mean audiophiles don´t have to be serious and can give
instructions to us lemmings to follow?

Jack for example doesn´t realize till now that his soundcard does
resample even when he sets everything to 44.1/16. He didn´t want to dig
deeper about that.
Like i already mentioned he should have used a resample plugin for
foobar to avoid the soudcard resampling. I´d be very interested in the
listening result. He didn´t.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 12.28Mhz oscillator removal - which radio streams will I lose?

2006-07-06 Thread parrydave

Hi all,

I'm planning some mods to my new SB3 and am wondering about removing
the 12.28MHz oscillator. My concern is which radio streams will I
lose?

>From Red Wine Audio site I know that my SB3 won't be able to able to
decode any streams with 32 or 48kHz sample rates, or low bit rate
streams (16k, 24k, 32k, and 48k). But I don't know how big an issue
this will be. Searched forums, but still not sure.

Are there any users with Bolder/RWA modded units (i.e. with oscillator
removed) that could comment on which internet stations they can/can't
receive? I'm primarily interested in AlienBBC, Last.FM, Live Music
Archive, but would like to get a general feel for how many I will
lose.

Also, am I correct in thinking that with streams I can no longer decode
after removal of crystal, I will get white noise ouput?

Thanks
Dave
