[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB3 into DAC
I have a similar problem with my Meridian DAC. I'm using the Optical interface between the DAC and the SB3 and the coax vetween it and a CD player. The Optical interface needs no signal to be present for the co-axial input to work. I have changed the setting as described but still doesnt work so I'm wondering if the fibre is still lit. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter setup with Bryston - Balanced levels
Eric, I use both outputs - Balanced XLR and Unbalanced RCA. They are directly connected between the Transporter and the Bryston 4B-ST. The RCA is a entry-level MIT cable ($75?) and the XLR is a cheap generic purchased at a musicians shop. The Bryston has a switch on the back that let's you toggle between the two. The default sound levels are close, with the RCA output slightly higher. I haven't changed the internal dip switches on the Transporter, - didn't see a need. I don't play music very loud, and a setting of around -12 on the Transporter is working for me. What speakers do you use? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: The origin of the urge to modify everything
I think you're limiting the scope of what people mod. Anything where people want performance, but the product is expensive, is modded: Hifi and cars for sure, but also computers, houses (I've just been DIY-ing!). What about artists? Where would we be if they didn't experiment with media (even just combining paints)? Music - ever heard a prepared piano? How many ways are there to mute a trumpet? People mod their bed with feather mattress covers. I'm sure it gives a performance boost ;) Sure you don't do much with your fridge (you'll adjust the shelves to your liking, but that's within the design), but such a commodity item has no real performance element. To get an improvement, you need a bigger and more stylish model, which can't be achieved with a mod. So I don't think audio is unique in any way. I think it's nice that you can make subtle changes to something you like to improve it (or just make you happier with it), and completely consistent with people's desire to improve their lives within their limited means. This is all interesting. However, the picture I'm getting here is that these kinds of recordings are the exception, not the rule. Moreover, it has to do with a perceptual trick and not the actual physics of how point source sound waves hit your ears. Still, I was unaware of these recording techniques and will seek out some of the recommendations. Again, in my experience, and from what i have learned, the rule and not the exception is that good stereo imaging pretty much happens between the speakers. The stuff you beyond that is artifice (as above) or reflection. This leads to one obvious question: how to judge, given specs, how a particular speaker, in a particular (generic) room will handle such recordings. I would imagine that the speaker and not the electronics is paramount is achieving the effect. Moreover, it has to do with a perceptual trick and not the actual physics of how point source sound waves hit your ears. Snarly beat me to it, all stereo is a perceptual trick. And there are nearly no point sources in the world. Look at an acoustic guitar. You get sound from the fingerboard, body, strings themselves, sound hole, etc. The body radiates different sounds from the front, sides, and back. Phase is how humans hear. It is critical to identifying location, it is how we knew where the lion was. Phase is not talked about a lot because it is hard to get right This leads to one obvious question: how to judge, given specs, how a particular speaker, in a particular (generic) room will handle such recordings. I would imagine that the speaker and not the electronics is paramount is achieving the effect. You can't judge speakers by specs. You have to listen to them. You should listen to them in your room. Or at least a room like where you will be listening. You need to listen to music that you know and like. Getting the phase right is what Quad ESLs and Maggies do right. Getting it nearly right is what mini-monitors do much better than full range speakers. But neither mini-monitors nor flat panels can deliver much bass, or have the bass be seamless with the mid-bass on up. I think one or two of the uber expensive speakers, like the $50,000 PipeDreams are reviewed to have both imaging and continuousness, but they are way out of my budget and flunk WAF too much for me to even find a dealer to listen to them. And that's before you go anywhere near the Black Stereophonic Arts. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter setup with Bryston - Balanced levels
I have on order the Paradigm Referene Studio 60 v.4 based on an audition and some research I did. I see from the Bryston manual web page the 4B-ST does not have the gain switch on it that I am wondering about on the 3B-SST... interesting. You can select balanced or unbalanced but not the input sensitivity. The professional version of the 4B-ST has a pot on the front to select gain but no switch. Based on reading I have been doing in this forum I think I understand the issue better now. The problems are basically: 1. amp clipping due to overdrive of amp input 2. speaker risk due to overdriving amp input 3. Risk to wife's ears due to accidentally setting the volume too high due to too high input sensitivity 4. possible issues of operating the Tp 40dB or more down on the digital volume control as routine (risk of loss of SNR) So I think I will hook it up, try it on 2V setting and see what the volume control says in comparison to 0dB. If I have to run the Tp volume control really far down, I will perhaps shift over to unbalanced and use the built in manual attenuators. If you are running your Tp at -12dB (or is -12 actually -6dB, not sure) then hopefully I won't have any issues at all, since, as far as I can tell, the 4B-ST is using the equivalent of the 1V setting on the 3B-SST.
