Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sb4 ?
No matter what new products are released, not everyone is going to be happy :) A photo frame device would be great in my bedroom, where i have no TV. I wouldn't want video output electronics in a regular SB. Extening my idea further, if a photo device had a ouch screen, it would be great if it had a touch screen as well. Embedding it in a wall would be fantastic :) -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35881 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How good is the DAC in the Squeezebox 3?
JohnSwenson;207933 Wrote: As some of you know this is exactly what I have implemented in my system. I have a home built DAC, the low jitter clock is in the DAC and feeds the SB3 as well, tapping in where the crystal usually goes. The I2S signals that go to the DAC chip are then tapped and fed to the DAC where they are reclocked by the main clock and sent to the DAC chip. This works extremely well, the jitter on the clock pin of DAC chip is extremely low. Sounds great. I'm sorry I don't know about system. Which DAC chip and supporting components are you using? How do you perform this reclocking? Given your DAC chip uses a master clock input, I assume it's a sigma delta one. Parallel DACs (R-2R ladder) are a different animal, they need only bitclock and wordclock, in addition of sdata, of course. And my understanding is that in all cases, for the DAC chip, only the wordclock is of crucial importance, jitterwise. Although I must admit I don't know exactly if and how some jitter on the master clock input of sigma-delta's can alter the audio quality. I'm confident your system is doing very well, but I'm not sure it would be worse if the super clocks were located close to the SB3 Xilinx, given the possible simplification of cabling and circuitry. For this reason, I prefer to integrate the DAC and the SB3 in close vicinity, inside the same case, making irrelevant the question of the super clock location (yet keeping it were Slimdevices designed it), and allowing for a simple, short and direct I2S interconnection. As a matter of fact, I have only one superclock, at 12.2896 MHz for 44.1 CDs, keeping the original crystal for the 48 KHz material. Given it's mostly a lossy one, the regular crystal is good enough (and it's not bad at all!). I'll acquiesce to the manufacturer and leave it on as they seem to think it makes a difference also. Regardless, I think I'll be reselling it. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Bolder modded SB3 sounds too digital
Actually, I do feel like I'm ahead of old analog (e.g. tape). I just use the ANALOG outputs of my digital Squeezebox. I tested all the Squeezebox outputs going into the same high-end digital amp. I found the analog outputs to sound better than the digital ones. I'd like to see what the analog output of a stock Squeezebox does against the analog output of your modded-Sony-DAC combination. It's too bad your Squeezebox mod was digital only. To me, digital S/PDIF doesn't sound right on two-channel signals. I really appreciate everyone's brainstorming. I can't thank you enough. I never would have come up with these suggestions on my own... It's funny to me how we all still work so hard to get digital to sound as pure, pleasant, and emotionally involving as good old fashioned analog. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Miracle DAC
Cool. I have an EMU 0404. It was one of the best USB devices I could find that ASIO drivers actually work. You can configure it as a standalone ADC (no computer needed) which is what I use it for. I think you can also set it up as standalone DAC as well. I never tried it as a DAC. It's a 24/192 DAC. It's basically setting it up in Monitor Mode and you choose which inputs to monitor. And it outputs what it monitors on all outputs. I used one with my 2 Channel setup, you can see a few photos here if your curious. http://www.meridianunplugged.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=000386 -- mswlogo Thinkpad XP SS Cat5 SB3 SPDIF-COAX Meridian 861V4 (Trifield, Room corrected, Upsampled) DSP5500 Mains, DSP5500HC Center, DSP33 Rears mswlogo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9090 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36024 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] god another DAC thread...
Ratso: I'm not familiar with the moonlab, but I recently went down a similar path as you and wound up adopting a similar buying strategy: outboard DAC, not insanely priced, hopefully one touted to be a giant killer -- or at least, would give the Lavry and Benchmark a run for the money. I wound up with the $300 Musiland MD-10 purchased from Pacific Valve (I believe they carry LITE DACs as well). Like you, I was a little skeptical it would be clearly, demonstrably better than what I had. In the end, it was, and I have been very pleased with the purchase and am running the digital outputs of both my SB and CD player to it. Anyway, this is a roundabout way of trying to convince you that you made a good choice and to trust your ears. You don't have to spend $1,000+ these days to get a good DAC. One more thing, if your DAC is anything like mine, it will benefit by 50-100 hours of burn in. -- Videodrome Videodrome's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11727 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36011 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How good is the DAC in the Squeezebox 3?
Actually I'm using PCM1704 chips, the data stream from the SB3 (its actually left justified not I2S) gets split into the two right justified streams for the 1704s in the FPGA in the DAC box, the two data signals and bclk and wclk are reclocked by single gate flops (TI little logic) driven by the selected low jitter clock, the flops are right next to the DAC chips. The output stage is a discrete MOSFET IV and buffer design of mine, it runs at fairly high voltage and current, IMO it sounds better than OP-amp or BJT descrete output stages, but is large and produces a fair amount of heat. (I did it this way to get the best linearity out of the MOSFETs, not to power the load). This gives considerably lower jitter than feeding the same clock into the FPGA in the SB3 and directly using its outputs. The FPGA adds some jitter to the signals, at about 35ps instead of 8ps for the way I did it. I can hear the difference it makes. Of course putting the low jitter clock in the SB3 and having the FPGA directly driving a very good DAC and output stage will still sound very good, considerably better than what is in there now AND be much simpler than what I did, but hey I was after the best I could do. I think being an audiophile, intrinsicly, is forever seeking for a better sound -- which is entirely subjective and personal. If you enjoy a DAC, speaker, wire, or whatever, and it makes you happier listening and owning it...it is good.
