[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amiga 500 power supply for SB3 - good idea?

2007-07-06 Thread sbn

Hi

I just sorted some of my old junk in my mom's basement today, and found
an Amiga 500 power supply, and i can see that it delivers 5v @ 2.5A

That should be necessary for the SB, and given it's huge size and heavy
weight, I guess it's a linear PSU...?

Would this PSU get me an improvement in sound quality, compared to the
stock PSU? it'd be nice to hear people's opinion before mounting a
proper connector on it :)

Hi DSK, respecting your opinion but just wanted to add my own (limited)
experience on this:

More and more high-end equipment *is* including balanced i/o these
days, and the cheap implementations of these connections and i/o stages
are largely being phased out as the connection type becomes more popular
and widely used in consumer gear (thankfully).

Personally I have found that balanced connections (when available)
always seem to sound/perform better than unbalanced, even with short
cable lengths of only 0.5 meter. I used to feel exactly as you are
expressing, but slowly my own point of view changed as I experienced
the balanced difference repeatedly with many different pieces of
equipment. I think it is entirely due to the impedance-balancing, which
makes it so much easier on the i/o stages and power supplies, and also
the elimination of micro-currents flowing through the unbalanced cable
shields. Also, when running balanced, you don't need to worry about
spending as much on cables, as the impedance-balancing seems to level
out the differences in balanced cables to a significant degree. Being
able to run longer cable lengths if needed is obviously an added
benefit as well. The connection is more secure and robust with balanced
too, especially with XLR fits.

Incidentally, balanced (AES/EBU) digital connections when available,
have always performed better than unbalanced coax in my experience
too.

Anyway, just felt like adding this. Just one person's opinion.

so all mods are "fake" ?

believe me - one of my main interests is high-end hifi.

so I have to say that my current setup is way proved.

starting from speaker placement down to wiring through fuse
replacement. everything done + validated.

so I am just curious if there any mods out there to improve the
transporter level...

I seriously should blind-test some high-end cdp with TP I guess to hear
if I miss anything...

Before spending more money on mods, have you tried experimenting with
speaker placement and room treatment?

Speaker placement is free and you could improve a room with treatment
for much less than 1,500 and likely have much more improvement in
sound.

Try putting traingular pillows in the tri corners and note the
improvement in resolution and clarity.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Streaming WAV audio ?

2007-07-06 Thread darrenyeats

B,
>From an information technology perspective FLAC and WAV are the same
quality. The whole point is that FLAC compresses the information held
in a WAV file to half size, much like winzip compresses a computer
file. Just like winzip, when FLAC is uncompressed it is exactly (and I
mean exactly) the same as the original pre-compressed WAV. Down to the
last bit.

In terms of the quality of the formats themselves, FLAC is 100% the
quality of WAV.

If the conversion to FLAC occurs on a computer (before getting to the
player) then it is impossible from an IT perspective that the sound
differs between FLAC and WAV.

If the conversion occurs on the player, I suppose it's feasible that
the different processing that occurs on-board might create noise that
affects the DAC differently. Firstly, this is a theoretical possibility
and I don't know whether it translates into a real difference in sound.
I doubt it. Secondly, if it did create a difference, any such
difference might favour WAV or FLAC - it is impossible to predict.

You can configure slimserver to take a FLAC file and convert it
server-side and stream it as WAV. The disadvantage is that twice the
network bandwidth is taken up. Probably the only advantage, if you're
the ultra-ultra-paranoid type, is that it puts your mind at rest.
Assuming that any difference favoured WAV, that is. ;-)

I tried it: I don't hear a difference myself.

Most rippers rip to WAV in the first place, then transcode to FLAC, MP3
or whatever else you ask for. EAC will do this easily, for example.

Besides size of file, streaming WAV uses more network bandwidth which
may be an issue in some marginal wireless networks. More importantly,
perhaps, you can't (except by using some highly non standard stuff) add
tags to WAV files, which makes attaching metadata to your music files a
bit tricky (you're limited to whatver you can encode in the file path
eg /genre/artist/album/...).

Some people do claim that WAV files sound better than FLAC, but I've
yet to see an even half-convincing explanation of how this might work.

You can always, of course, rip to FLAC (which gives you the smaller
files and tagging capability) and have slimserver transcode to WAV on
the fly, which would give you the alleged improved sound quality at the
only cost of losing FF/RWD capbility (because you can't do that on
transcoded streams).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Streaming WAV audio ?

2007-07-06 Thread signor_rossi

flac is nothing else than a lossless compression format for wav with tag
support, with no loss in quality, where wav is actually the "raw" music
data. You can convert back and forth endlessy between both and you will
always get the same data. Now Slimserver gives you the ability to either
send the flac to the Squeezebox and letting the SB do the decoding work
(there are different compression levels possibile in flac with higher
values meaning getting smaller flac files, at the expense of more
processing power needed to compress and decompress) or to decode on the
server and stream the wav. Some here say that a streamed wav sounds
better to them, but in reality there really shouldn't be any
difference. I myself atm stream the wav, but only because the built-in
flac decoder of my SB doesn't like some of my flac files.

Bye, signor_rossi.

Check past threads for details.
I had a modded TP with "50 parts changed" according to the modder.

Almost 2 weeks of comparing it with a stock TP using sighted and blind
testing led me to the conclusion that the stock stock TP is so good it
is hard to improve on.
No one could acurately identify which was which in blind testing.

I would advise you to spend the money on CD's :-)

With regards to reference audio mods, they are the guys that advertised
what their mods would do BEFORE the TP was available.
In other words, they made it up.

Hi the "Measure guy" from AUDIO DATA LAB was here today + many other
people!!
Many of my friends is very interested in this.
I will get the result of the Measure at Monday.

We run Pinknoise "S_pinknoise_20_-6dBfs.flac" from sweeps.zip
downloaded from "Inguz"
Measure from the analog outputs from my DAC (Musical Fidelity X-dAC V3)

We did 4 Measures, 2 "Goodsound" and 2 "Not so good sound"

The measure guy said this is a quite simple measure, And maybe not
showing anything.
This "Fenomenia" is maybe some "phase" or overtone thing.?

But soon we know?!

yesterday daniel a friend of mine was visiting me, but he had more
difficult hearing "The PAUSE thing"
He said - "maybe?! "Some volume increase" or "something" but i´m not
100%

But Stefan and "Hammer65" were here during the measure.
They both heard the "The Better sound" Easy.

We all also heard "The change" if we played
"S_pinknoise_20_-6dBfs.flac" out on the speakers and did the "PAUSE
OFF/ON PAUSE" !

-Phil Leigh

Thanks for the tip,
I have tried "resume after power off", but it seems to give the same
result but not always?. (I Only run a qick test this evening)
i will try this more later in the weeked.

Can you try installing slimserver version SlimServer_v6.5.2.exe ?
And see if you hear something.

I have downgraded to 6.5.0 but i can´t listen this evening..
(neighbours)
Reporting more about this later.

-opaqueice

I maybe try audiodiffmaker later,
Thanks for the tip !!

Best Regards!

If you are only using the digital out of the SB into a DAC the basic
Stontronics linear is just fine...
IMHO it's only worth investigating more exotic supply solutions if you
are using the analogue SB...and you'll need to disect the internal
supplies to do so which is not trivial.

Since you're in the UK, get a Skynet SMPS 8080. They're easily available
(Ebay too) and cheap. The beauty of this PS is that is can power both
the Squeezebox and the Shek Dac at the same time, as it puts out both5v
and 12v.

I cannot tell you which of the two profited more, but the SMPS makes
quite a difference.

You can box the SMPS in a standard Euro-Board aluminium enclosure.

Well, in this test you use your ears - you listen to the difference

removing everything else. If you don't hear anything in the difference
file, you've proved conclusively that there were no differences to begin

Incidentally I did this with FLAC and WAV, and the difference file

more or less white noise at around -80dB down from the signal. The
test file was a piano and cello concerto. I think the noise was coming
from the recording process and the A->D it entails. With better
equipment you could get better resolution.

In any case that proves that if there is any difference between FLAC
and WAV playback on my SB3 it's much quieter than white noise at -80dB,
and I don't care about it.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply upgrade for Shek D1

2007-07-06 Thread david68

Hi, I've just taken delivery of a Shek D1 and was a little surprised at
how lightweight & cheap the power supply that is supplied with it
feels.

It's a variable output regulated / switched model that came preset at
12v.

It may be great - I've got nothing else to compare it to - but in my
experience the better power supplies are usually more substantially
built.

So, is the stock PS any good and if not can anyone recommend a suitable
upgrade?

NB: I'm in the UK, so maybe something that Maplins stock?

Thanks

If you had not stated this so categorically, I would have simply
ignored it. However, most of the time, this simply isn't true. Unless
you are using very long cables (as in a pro environment) and/or in a
very noisy environment, there will typically be little if any audible
difference between single ended and balanced. On some equipment it will
even depend upon how the single ended and balanced outputs are
implemented. Why do you think all high end hifi equipment does not
provided balanced connections? In fact, many high end manufacturers
have stated that single ended performs as well or better in typical
high end setups and refuse to implement balanced connections on their
components. In most cases, the topology and dialectric differences
between cables cause greater audible differences than single ended
versus balanced.

If we only need to seek to some offset in the track, that is a
manageable problem even if it has to be addressed individually for each
format.

Balanced outputs are expected to have a low output impedance, so that
they can drive long interconnects. Adding passive attenuation increases
the output impedance, so perhaps Slim Devices felt that this would be
somewhat "against the convention". Indeed, there was a thread after the
announcement but before the release of the Transporter where a number of
people (including myself) urged Sean to change the TP balanced output
impedance from 1000 to 100 ohms, which he agreed to.

That said, if your interconnects are not too long, passive attenuation
is fine. Since I'd guess that Transporters are likely to be used mainly
in a domestic setting, where interconnects are not usually very long,
adding an attenuation feature seems worthwhile. But that would probably
require a revision of the main board layout, and on a low volume product
like the Transporter this might not be feasible from a cost-benefit
point of view. It's easy to add external passive attenuation, so it's
not like this is a burning issue.

Funny thing is, the way that most CD players work doesn't do the trick
for me. I typically want to skip to a known time within the track. I
once owned a CD player that allowed for that, but it's not a common
feature.

On the other hand, the Song Scanner plugin goes a long way to doing
what I want. So for me, skipping around on a Squeezebox is *better*
than most CD players. If you've not yet tried it out, give it a go.
Note: as far as I am aware, it only works with native formats, not
transcoded ones. (One more reason to use FLAC).

I articulated as best I could why it is not feasible. If you have a
better idea I am all ears, but I don't think it is reasonable to insist
that it can be done without having any idea how.
