Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter vs. Duet+DAC?

2009-10-26 Thread loserica

Thanks for the answer. Well, I would want to go with the following
upgrade route :
- SB3 or Duet (have both) + Lavry DA-10 (current setup) to -
- TP standalone, or TP + Lavry to -
- TP + more expensive external DAC (I am considering EMM Labs, Berkeley
etc. I have the possibility to hear the EMM DCC2, but not the TP, hence
my questions)

I read about the digital outputs in the touch being better than the
ones in the SB3, but I thought that the Transporter digital outs should
have the lowest jitter anyway, and the Transporter offers extra
connectivity (AES, word clock, etc).

Anyone else compared the digital outs of SB3 vs Transporter ? Maybe
Sean ? :)

If it's the case (if I understood properly) I advise you to use only
one amp. Amplifiers interact with speakers, two amplifiers interact
differently (damping factors, etc) and they can rarely be used in
conjunction for bi-amping. Use just the Rotel, for instance, even with

reprogramming the xilinx never hurts but that's a long shot. Hold power
until it resets, then press 1 when the logo appears.

The only setting I can think of that might interfere with the digital
outs is word clock on digital outputs - make sure that is DISabled
(the default). But that's only supposed to come into play when TP is
being used as a DAC.

Unfortunately, I think you will probably need to send it in for a main
board replacement.

If you want to check the power supplies it is easy enough to do - IF it
is the PSU then there's only one it could be in this case, which is a
separate 5VDC module mounted between the main board and the display. If
you see 110V going in (3-pin connector) and nothing coming out (4-pin
connector), then it's bad. You might even convince Slim to send you just
the module and save everyone on shipping.

2009-10-26 Thread Teus de Jong

Well, if you have a very good DAC, the sound should be better with the
digital outs of the transporter than with those of the SB3. But I doubt
very much that the Lavry DA-10 is a better DAC than the one in the
transporter. It could well be that if you buy the transporter, the Lavry
DAC has to retire.

Another option would be to wait for the Touch. From the first reports,
the digital outs are better sounding than the SB3 and you will be able
to play 24/96 files.

This might seem like an obvious question but I have to ask, Is the
Volume turned up on the Transporter? If I remember correctly if one
isn't using Fixed Volume, then Volume control happens in the digital
domain meaning if its Muted or turned down, no Audio. Check your Volume
settings on the TP and setting in SBS. If the Volume is Muted or below
say -30dB you could very well have an active signal but not enough to
drive an Amp or Pre-amp.

Anyway, I just adjusted my Volume with the TP remote when I am feeding
my DAC with S/PDIF.

most of the differences between your DAC8 and the Transporter analog

On the other hand, if you consider that the highs do appear to be
quite brittle and harsh, especially at loud volumes then, probably, the
power amp has some difficulties with the 703's. Or your room has a
 problem regarding the mid-high frequencies.
I would suggest two things :
First, you should try putting +12dB level on the analog input of the
 TP.
If you still have the harsh on high volumes problem, try placing your
speakers differently, or try a different amp.

the rotel is only powering the drivers of the 703s, the denon is doing
the mid/hi

unfortunately I have limited space to work with as well, the speakers
can't be positioned any differently

First of all - The Rotel is second rate. Sorry - I had a Proton back in
the 80's. It was great so I thought. It's all relative. When you get
into the real stuff you are going to put your Rotel up for sale
 lickety split!

My bias is get the hell out of class A/B. Either go tubes, or class T,
D or pure class A. I tried mosfets - no way - I'm into class T now and
I'm not turning back. I though about tubes at one stage but cap tweaking
 has done the trick.

The Transport is one awesome sounding front end. Work on the other
stuff and dont bitch about the Transport!

bitch about the Transport? I fail to see ANYWHERE that I was actually
bitching about the Transporter in the slightest.

I was surprised at my initial response and limited testing of the TP,
and the level to which it heats up compared to say my main amp, but
that's about it!

the Rotel isn't the best, but for the price point and sole purpose of
powering the drivers of the 703s, it does a decent job of it, and far
better than Bi-amping the 703s with the Denon... obviously the next bit
to upgrade in my setup would be the Denon, but that's quite a way off
yet.

after giving it a good decent thrashing over the w/end, I've actually
come to fall in love with the TP... I only had a chance to listen to
CD's through the TP initially and not any of my digital music yet as it
wasn't set up good god after firing up some of my digital music, I
was absolutely blown away... never has my system sounded so damn good!

playing CDs through the TP, whilst it still sounds good, seems to maybe
be a bit hit and miss depending what I'm playing, however that's
probably more to do with the Beosound not being all that flash quality
CD player... which I knew when I bought it, I bought it as a nice
functional 'looks good' piece for my house more than for high quality
audio, which is why it needs a good DAC.

all n all I'm extremely happy with the TP, just need to look at the
heat issues cos it's going to be a right bitch in summer, maybe try and
get some bigger feet in there to give it a bit more space

Not much difference, if any. Not enough, in any case, to justify the
price difference imho.

The TP is a nice dac in itself, and keeping transport+dac in the same
box is a far better solution design-wise (and jitter-wise) than two
separates. Things get better with outboard dacs, as time passes,
nevertheless, you'll need a better dac than the TP to counter-balance
the spdif interface quality drop. And a *better* dac at this price-range
becomes hard to find...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Problem with Transporter Toslink Input

2009-10-26 Thread netchord

I want to use my transporter as a DAC for my mac mini, as well as my
cable box, and DVD player. I prefer the transporter used as intended,
but i have a number of Playlists that are based on Playcount, and these
are more easily managed in iTunes. however, when taking the optical
output from my mini, into the TP's optical in, i get no sound.

I've tried adjusting the bit rate/depth in the Audio Midi control panel
(various options at 44.1/48/96kz, and 16/24 word length) but none
produces sound. I've verified the input and cable are working, by using
another source (cable TV). and the TP will accept a signal from the
mini if i take a USB outto a HagUSB--SPDIF converter, and then to the
TP. Plus, the mini toslink out works into other dacs.

any thoughts as to what might be going on?

hmmm maybe it's not setup in the best configuration then?

a number of places I went to who sell and consult on high end gear said
the best option would be to use the bi-amp feature of the Denon for the
703s, and if I found that didn't power the drivers of the 703s enough,
then get in a poweramp just for them

ran the system in for a few weeks, wasn't happy with it, place I bought
everything from and did the setup/cabling for me came out and put in the
rotel to power the drivers of the 703s

so the denon powers the DS7s, HTM7, just the mid-hi on the 703s, with
the rotel powering the drivers on the 703s

when I listen to music it's either in pure direct or 5ch stereo mode,
on the odd occasion I watch a dvd/movie I use the surround sound mode of
the denon

i definitely do get better bass response from the 703 with the rotel
powering the drivers than using the denon to bi-amp
