Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0
just had a rather long look at this thread. very interesting. I have used Klaus' mods in the past, but due to changing residence didn't get back to using it. At that time it made a difference, though not huge. Still, a difference (for the better) only with SW is a HUGE thing in an audiophile world, where we sometimes have to spend quite a lot of time and/or money to get an incremental ugrade. A few weeks ago I replaced the original PSU with a Welborne... and boy, the difference was not subtle at all. It was a real upgrade in every sense. I am now very interested in trying Klaus' new mods and believe that differences should be easier to spot now. The alternative PSU route really, REALLY made a difference in my system. (BTW I used to have a Duet and also used it with a Welborne; the difference was very real, too, but since my system evolved since then I must say that magnitude of perceived improvement might be due to a better and more revealing system.) [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Considering a dac
Hi folks, My current set up is -amp- Sherwood AX-405OR,speakers- Eltax Symphony 4.2. My music is 95% flac, the rest mp3, and I sometimes stream from Napster and a couple of internet radio stations. I primarily use SB3 with this setup. I just want to know would a Cambridge Audio dacmagic be a good investment? For the price ( approx £200 UK ) I haven't seen too many bad things written about it, but am open to alternative suggestions. A DAC would not hurt, although I would probably look to upgrading the speakers or amp before the source in your place - although it might take more than £200 to make a real jump up in quality. If you do want to buy a DAC, the CA is a good choice. The Arcam rDAC is also worth considering, you may get a used one for that kind of amount; the MF V-DAC is also within budget. You can expect lots of changes an improvements. I guess many of you will like it. ;) USB DAC support is still not supported (I had it implemented though). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Considering a dac
My personal advice is that it is all too easy to think that a change of DAC will make a difference and as a result you actually do hear a difference where none actually exists. (Expectation tends to be self-fulfilling). Pretty much all competent DACs sound very similar. My moment of enlightenment happened several years ago when I bought/borrowed a Lucid DA9624 on sale-or-return. (Thanks to Digital Village in Barnet - nice people to deal with). The Lucid was an entry-level 24bit 96kHz professional DAC - about £800 at the time - and I compared it to the 16bit 44.1kHz DAC in my CD player - radically different DAC technology. I thought the Lucid sounded marginally better, but was surprised the difference wasn't greater. When I did a level-matched blind test, I scored precisely 50%, ie. there was *no* audible difference between the two. DACs are probably the electronic component with the least influence on the sound. Preamps are *way* more variable. IMHO a £200 DAC isn't going to make much if any difference compared to the SB3's onboard DC. I'd spend the money on some more music instead, or start a speaker upgrade fund. -- cliveb Transporter - ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90939 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

If I buy FLAC tracks, how will I add them to my iTunes library, which is where SBS looks for my music? If I uncheck use iTunes in SBS, and put the FLAC tracks in some other place, will I still be able to stream all my iTunes Lossless tracks as well as the new high-rez FLAC tracks? I read about a program called XDL that will transcode FLAC to ALAC. If I do this, can I still use iTunes for everything and still check use iTunes in my SBS preferences? Thanks for any help you can provide. 1. iTunes does not and probably will never play FLAC. 2. You can uncheck the Use iTunes in SBS and point SBS to the music folder that has all the M4A's and it will be happy. If that folder contains additional folders that have FLACS, they will also show up in SBS when you rescan. Additionally, there is a Java script not Javascript that can read your iTunes metadata and output a cover.jpg in the corresponding folder so SBS gets a shot of iTunes album artwork. Search saveitunesartworktofile. 3. I don't know about XDL so I cannot say what it will do with hi-rez FLAC and translating to M4A, but if you do that, you would be able to see that music in both iTunes and SBS. If the original FLAC's are in the path, you'll get two copies of each in SBS. p -- pski real stereo doesn't just wake the neighbors, it -enrages- them.. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Suggestions for a new amp?
Thanks for the responses (well, the more constructive ones :-) ). I think I'd have to rule out something like the Krell though as we'll need lots of inputs. (Well, need is a strong word; but even though I suspect I haven't used it in years, I'd still like the option of an input for my Rega 2. And then there are the PVRs, the Blu-Ray, the CD player and maybe even the TV... OK, so with the Transporter that's too many already...) I'm intrigued by the Cronos - I'd pretty much assumed that valve amps would be beyond my budget. Not sure I'd get it past SWMBO, who thinks amps with valves sticking out just look daft (whereas I'd hate to hide them under a cover). And, again, too few inputs. (Perhaps it could be argued that we really need two separate systems; but that's not an argument I'd ever win...) We've booked a session at Audio-T (except that they've just become Sevenoaks - I thought I'd mis-dialled!) tomorrow, and will see what they can tempt us with. We're taking over a dozen CDs with us (they don't do flac, it seems); not that we intend to listen to them all, but so we can follow our ears, as it were. My budget is based more than anything else on a half-baked extrapolation of how much I vaguely remember spending on the Arcams 18 years ago, tempered by a similarly vague notion that technology has improved faster than inflation. And doubly tempered by the knowledge that my hearing ain't what it was! And reigned in again by remembering that the bathroom needs a total overhaul. :-) -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90915 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Yes, it's a possibility... but... Part of me would love to have surround-sound... It would be mainly for movie-watching, though the number of 5.1 remixes seems to be rising. Also, one of my passions is ambient music (I have an insane number of Steve Roach albums, and my ambient dynamic playlist probably gets more hits than anything else) and I've always thought they'd sound great in surround-sound (albeit faked). However, our living-room just isn't geared-up for it; there really isn't anywhere suitable to put the rear speakers. I do wonder whether one of those soundbar things would be good enough for us. I think for now at least, lots of inputs is a requirement. Basically, I'm hoping I like the Cyrus 8 XP tomorrow :-) But if my relationship with the guys at Audio-T/Sevenoaks is the same as it was 15 years ago, I'll probably come home with the Arcam surround-amp, lots of speakers, and plans for a radical rearrangement of the living-room :-) . -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90915 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
