Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Optical (toslink) connection
This thread had me experimenting again. It still baffles me that the audible differences between digital cables can be so large; between my Touch and Rega DAC I used to use an Oyaide 510. Beautiful well made cable, pure silver, multiple shields, and it sounded great with former dacs. However, with the Rega it sounded dull (something I associate with jitter) and was clearly beaten on all fronts by my current Canare Digiflex at 1/8 of the price. I used to think jitter and noise was all there was problemwise in digital cables, and could not understand why two well-made cables should sound so different, and why with one dac one cable sounded better, and with another dac another cable sounds better. Untill I read John Swensons post in this thread about impedance matching. Then I finally got an explanation of this synergy stuff. Thanks. Then I decided to buy a vdHul optocoupler. Differences between the toslink and the Canare coax were small, the coax sounding warmer and more euphonic with slightly more middbass weight and a cleaner treble. Interestingly, if I left the Canare in place while using the toslink, The toslink gained some of that coax midbass warmth, hinting that this was an artefact created by noise over the electrical connection between source and dac. I prefer the Canare, but have to admit perhaps the toslink connection is purer. Otoh, I also found this: http://thewelltemperedcomputer.com/Intro/SQ/Toslink_Coax.htm Hinting that coax has less jitter then toslink, which, if audible, could also explain the smoother treble of the coax. -- Dura Dura's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39937 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90211 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Toslink's presentation is just very (for lack of a better word) -clean-. All this without any roughness on the extreme highs (solo violins and sopranos!) and the decay on things like cymbals, triangle, tympani, etc. keeps going all the way to nothingness. I am planning to look into it more after tomorrow. But last night I did play with the buffer size a bit. One setting was 5000 and that was MUCH worse than 4000. Which confused me, and I wasn't in a mindset to play with it much more as I wanted to listen to music... I should say that I can hear this little left hf burr even with plain ol' TT3.0 and all its default settings. Including TT3.0 with buffer size up to 4000, so it's not like it's unique to SBGK's configs or their variations. magiccarpetride: I have neither Shakti stones (always wanted to try one) nor a Venom 3 PC (want to get one) and I can assure you the new sound you're hearing is not primarily because of adding them to the mix. I stopped mid-music, did this mod and picked it up again exactly where I left off. Oddly, it sounded a notch louder, so I backed my volume down a little to compensate. 2. Sounds to me like all of the good qualities of the p.62 mods have been boosted a bit and there is some added fullness, too. You may have, indeed, outdone yourself. BTW, I typically use the last 10 minutes of a 24/96 recording of Mahler's 2nd symphony as my initial reference---has everything---lots of dynamics, solo and choral voice, triangles, bells, gongs, etc. Usually I can tell if something's missing, better/worse. I know it like the proverbial back of my hand. As to audimuze's comment: Klaus' TT mods are for real. Don't poo-poo this until you've actually tried implementing them in full. SBGK is, as another poster put it, standing on Klaus' shoulders and it wouild appear that he's onto something that'll incrementally improve on what Klaus has done. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0
I have no doubt people are hearing what they're hearing. One way or another I've managed to duplicate just about every sonic problem people have mentioned. Except for the crackling people used to mention a long time ago. Other people have heard it here too. Usually people are too polite to mention flaws when at somebody else's place, but not me lol, when asked. Anyway, I specifically pointed out the anomalies when they occurred and the others agreed they could easily hear it too, but didn't find it very distracting overall. Now that we've come so far from the basic/stock SBT sound, and I hear what can be done, I think it's worthwhile to pursue it to the bitter end lol. -- cfraser cfraser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48869 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 3.0
Hello fellow tweakers. I have been following this thread since the beginning but have never been able to try any of the mods as the screen on my Bolder modded Touch was disabled (permanently!) when I snapped the flat cable connector. Anyhow I finally got around to buying another Touch and decided to give Klaus' Toolbox a try. I was a bit skeptical at first but after only a few seconds of late night listening to the original version I knew there was something going on. It was like a blanket had been lifted off my speakers. I couldn't wait 'til the next day to try it with more volume. It was then that I realized just how detailed and transparent everything was. Unfortunately the price for all this detail appeared to be, as expected, a less forgiving sound with certain material. I tried a few different tubes/opamps in my DAC and followed a few different suggestions from SBGK and the others. Finally I think everything has fallen into place with this last tweak. The mids are richer, the bass is there in spades and the detail appears to almost if not all there(more listening/tweaking/comments to follow) Bingo! A BIG thanks to Klaus and everyone who has provided their input. -- Turnandcough Turnandcough's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9436 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I tried a Blue Jeans 3 foot plastic optical cable and came up thoroughly unimpressed. Both connectors were sloppy fitting. Then I tried one of those Amazon Cables to Go 3ft glass cable. Great snug fitting connectors and the sound was a big improvement over the BJ cable. I am usually highly skeptical of cables but was surprised by the result. My coax cables are louder and the bass seems a bit looser and boomier. The coax is monoprice 16 gauge. I recently dissected one to convert to an XLR cable, and I'll have to sat it's a pretty well constructed cable with a good copper core. Anyway, I'm sold on glass toslink. We'll see how it sounds in 2012---still 2 1/2 hrs. to go for us west coasters. While audiomuze seems to think we're pretentious and silly as hell, I'm actually having quite a bit of fun with this. -- rgro Rg System information Main: PS Audio Quintet Vortexbox Touch (wired) via optical Rega DAC LFD LE IV Signature amp VA Mozart Grands REL Acoustics R305 sub. Anyone wishing to brush up on audio superlatives should be referred to this thread - I don't think I've ever seen as many used in one place anywhere, in any medium. To be fair, I don't doubt there are some improvements, just as I don't doubt that there are many imaginary improvements. I think it's just that some people have never learned how to critically listen to music. RUSH recently released a box set called Sector 1. One of the remastered albums, Fly By Night, was found to contain numerous dropouts in the left or right channels. There was a listener on a forum who swore up and down that his copy was perfect even though a fixed remaster has not been issued yet. When he was asked to listen critically with headphones and given the exact time positions, he finally admitted the errors were present. Some listeners are naturals for detecting change others will never have a clue. Ignorance is bliss. But hey it's all good if everyone is satisfied. The unsatisfied usually have large mountains of unused gear and light wallets. -- Stilly77 WHS 2011 server with LMS 7.7.1 ASUS RT-N16 router (Tomato) AP ASUS RT-N12 wireless bridge (DD-WRT) 15ft Cat 6 unshielded SBT (TT3.0 with sgbk mod) 3ft glass optical interconnect Emotiva XDA-1 DAC XLR to rca interconnect Little Dot Mk III (all Russian tubes) Beyerdynamic DT-990 600 ohm headphones Stilly77's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43680 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91322 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
