Yes, expectation bias is certainly a powerful factor. We know that it
will influence what you hear.

But what's most interesting about Poppy Crum's demonstration is this:
You KNOW that what you're listening to on both occasions is exactly the
same sound. So you should EXPECT to hear no difference. But the addition
of the visual steering forces you to hear something different. This
seems to show that non-auditory clues can influence you in a way over
which you have no conscious control, even when you're in possession of
facts that should allow you to ignore the steering.

Hi Jeff,

wireless radio turned off in the Touch

Do you mean connecting Wired and turning off WLAN using Soundcheck
toolbox please?

I do have opportunity to try Rega at home and think this maybe worth
saving up for before spending elsewhere, except for sorting wired
connection of course.
Thanks for your reply

Thanks, but I don't have ideal setup for speaker placement (oak

for the imaging.

I don't have options for any soundproofing given setup but with some of
the different priority tuning in the Soundcheck 3 thread I have
experienced better sound in some areas and know that my system can
reveal more.
In addition, when testing LAN opposed to WLAN I got improvement, more
significantly when removing ethernet cable and listening to last
20-30seconds in buffer.

I think I will look at sorting LAN connection first and then save up
for DAC hoping this will be a good step up over the SBT dac.

However, matching (integrating) a sub is not without its challenges.
Room mode taming, an important consideration for decent low-frequency

similar) and/or digital signal processing correction. I had excellent
results with the DSpeaker unit in my sig.

The validity of Ron's point also hinges on the type of music you mostly
listen to and how fussy a listener you are.

Don't overlook cables. In my system, even a better (Monster, $15) cat6
Ethernet cable did cause a significant SQ improvement. I know, tough to
believe, but that has been my experience.

 Best luck!

I don't really need a sub, the Neats dig quite low and have excellent

This is the kind of reasoning which has turned this forum into bedlam

It cannot be correct that the only valid contributions are statements

Otherwise newcomers to the forum might be under the impression that

As it is I am quite sure that many people do, quite incorrectly but

perceptions may be coloured or even manufactured by psychological
factors. This happens on any internet forum.

As Clive pointed out, ALL of us are influenced by this, even when we

Personal blind testing is one way to address the problem but
unfortunately it's impractical in many situations.

Admitting blind testing can be impractical isn't the same as denying

This is bullshit. No one is denying the fact that extraneous factors
influence our experiences. For example, if you're into enjoying wine,
you know that part of the enjoyment is not only the wine itself, but
also the size and the shape of the bottle from which you pour the wine,
the size, shape, color, font and other graphical gimmickry displayed on
the bottle label, the size and the shape of the glass into which you
pour the wine, the type of lighting in the room, the bra size of the
women you're enjoy the glass with, etc.

Same goes for audio reproduction. Not only the audio equipment, but
also the looks of the kit, the ambience, the lighting, the bra size...
Everything affects how we experience something, and whether we enjoy it
or not.

Same as it gets hard to enjoy good wine while drinking it from a baby
bottle, it gets hard to enjoy good music reproduction while sitting in
a shitty room.

I think discussion on Squeezebox Touch tweaks does not belong in the

But, as someone pointed out, Klaus (Soundcheck) did start this Touch

New ideas are very welcome :)

But the typical audiophool ideas are not new.
And if they are, they top the old ones in sheer improbality *sigh* and
are usually rubbish too, like we need yet another powercable etc...

99.88% of them can be given a blanket statement yes you are hearing
things in your head meaning bias or placebo etc and nothing is happen
in reality, or what happening is below the threshold of what we can
hear.

EE and audio is quite mature incremental improvement is possible .

What can shook things up are things like squeezeboxes that gives a
completely new way to enjoy music, this is the future no more discs.
And similar paradigm shifting stuff.

Also good quality at lower prices , that would be news , but in
audiophilia the silly price is a part of the product, but I love stuff
that tries to break the mold here to .

Audiophiles don't like new ideas either the want old ones rehashed over
again like set tube amps and other anachronism of yesteryear.

Example active speakers are superior to passive speakers, yet almost no
audiophile uses them and there is way to few of them to be a good
selection :-/ (if no one buys no one sells ) but the pros have been
using them since 60-70s

The thing that bothers me the most however is when a new Touch user

is, apply TT3.0 tweaks, remove the caps, solder the S/PDIF cable to the
board, get a DAC and then you'll be getting closer to decent sound from
a TOUCH. But that's just me and I'm not in charge. (If they made me

Example active speakers are superior to passive speakers, yet almost no
audiophile uses them and there is way to few of them to be a good
selection :-/ (if no one buys no one sells ) but the pros have been
 using them since 60-70s

do you know Squeezebox is a computer, do you know the server runs on a
computer, do you know computers can be tweaked, this is a whole new
area which is definately affecting audio performance and is definately
not mature. I notice you are not saying 'I have tried these settings
and this is my opinion'

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audio Myths!

2012-01-11 Thread darrenyeats

Since thinking rationally about audio and relying more on science and
measurements (XTZ analyzer etc) two things have happened:
1. The sound I am experiencing has improved greatly because (I believe)
I've been focussing on things that really matter.
2. Although the sound has improved I've become more aware of how
limited sound quality is under normal conditions, in absolute terms.
I'm happy with my gear - I can't think of anything I'd want instead so
I am lucky. It's just I've got real about how good audio replay can be
in real domestic environments with normal recordings.

(1) and (2) sound contradictory but basically it's a process of
constantly downgrading my opinion about my current SQ (for my
system/music) - whilst downgrading opinion of my past SQ even more
severely! He-he.

You have a point. The exorbitant price tag associated with the
solutions Soundcheck and SBGK have offered with their SBT tweaks will
certainly drive away many hi fi novices. I mean, few of us can afford
to throw that kind of cash at our audio system.

Here is hoping that more knowledgeable members will step in and offer

Let's keep it simple here and in perspective..

Imagine Logitech invented the Model T Ford (you still with me boy? -
thats the SBT)

Now supposing Soundcheck came along and offered a modified (software)
engine - You probably don't get Cosworth over there, but look it up.

Now along comes SBGK who works on the Cosworth engine, well when I say
works on, tightens a couple of bolts.

And along you come to polish the bodywork.

You still with me boy?

Now, take your UK mate - SBGK, go and do what you want us to believe
you can do, (improve on Soundchecks mods) and report back when you get
somewhere.

Clue: that means trying to emulate what the inventor of the Cosworth
engine (above) does rather than sniffing the polish.

Now, take your UK mate - SBGK, go and do what you want us to believe
you can do, (improve on Soundchecks mods) and report back when you get
 somewhere.

Clue: that means trying to emulate what the inventor of the Cosworth
engine (above) does rather than sniffing the polish.

so SBGK tweaked some settings, maybe too often, and ended to back at
TT2.0 buffer 2, who gives a crap, someone had to do it, TT3.0 is
far from perfect, audibly anyway

At one point did measurements to apply DRC, and could see how dismal
the room is. Sadly, it is what it is, happens to be the only real
option for my system, and is under strict WAF control.

I believe it is absolutely true that the best bang for your buck, and
one of the most important components in your system is the space.

But away from home over a weekend in a dedicated Man-Cave-Apartment,
nearly soundproofed, and with a few friends over... Oh my, what

And if you haven't checked out Nikka Yoichi, please do yourself a favor

don't you see it is you who is using baseless generalisations to back
your viewpoint, if people are reporting improvements does that not
warrant some investigation by the naysayers rather than name calling

it says something that no one comments about PandaSharka's vile

your arguments about tweaking effectively mean that the whole TT3.0

no complaints until people started tweaking priorities, which is
exactly what TT3.0 does amongst other outlandish things, and yet I have
seen no point by point demolition of Soundcheck;s ideas.

It's obvious there are those who are so biased against any unofficial

continue suggesting changes and reporting their fidings and the
naysayers will continue saying enough of that sort of thing.
