I had a look at the manual for the Hegel, and there's no mention of being able to handle 24/192 anywhere. If it were capable of handling 24/192 on any of the inputs they would state so - it widens the scope for potential purchasers. My Touch is quite happy dishing out 24/192 files to my 24/192 capable DAC over coaxial SPDIF. I wouldn't have thought that many recordings in the Jazz idiom would be badly aflicted by being remastered - the material isn't mainstream, and it's unlikely to have been mistreated in the same way as Pop music has. The Jazz audience wouldn't buy on a whim, unlike the consumers of the rubbish we call Pop music today. I grew up when there was real creativity in the pop genre - sadly not the case today. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ethernet Connection
Today I have listened to the sound of Ethernet with a nice experiment. I found high quality cat7 SFTP cables to connect my Touch. The cable passed along my analog interconnects and speaker cables. Guess what... these are perfect EMI antenna and now I can listen to the packets transmitted through the cable instead to look at my switch led! Amazing isn't it? Pulled the cable out and replaced by my old good cat5e UTP patch cable and the Ethernet sound disappeared! Allthough I can guarantee this was bit perfect transmission Who said Ethernet do not have any incidence on SQ? Category 7 cable has each cable pair shielded, along with an overall shield. If your network is not Cat7 then the screens are floating, and, as one end is connected to the Touch, which *does* have a connection to the screen contact you will get an effective radio aerial. If the screens in a Cat7 installation are properly grounded to a common point, then you have the opposite occurring - you have a very effective Faraday shield, and the screens do not act as an aerial. There's nothing wrong with using Cat7 cable, but, as you have found, a single piece inappropriately used can be pretty disastrous. Avoid a network grounding strategy if you can - the pins on a Cat5e/Cat6 do not carry any ground connections (ie - everything floats) - that is done by the cable screen, if there is one. In most applications there is no need to screen the cable, it's for extreme conditions only, should they arise. Chris :) -- Stratmangler There is no element of personal attack in my response. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] S-Booster
Phil Leigh;663821 Wrote: This thread has become tainted with an analogue=better mantra/line of thinking. The reality - shocking though it may be - is that analogue is not better (in any objective sense) than correctly engineered digital. In fact the opposite is true. Some people might prefer certain peculiarities of analogue but this has nothing to do with better. I myself used to be fond of my LP12... When Chris (for whom I have great respect) said it sounded more analogue, I immediately formed a mental image of how it sounded... smoother, more relaxed/at ease, less edgy... but that's only because when people say analogue that's what they most often mean (if they mean anything at all). It's an unfortunate turn of phrase because more analogue strictly speaking also means noisier, less dynamic, less pitch-stable, more distorted etc etc... Thanks Phil. Yes, there is a reduction in hard edged artifact, but there's no softening of the sound, which is a pretty neat trick if you can pull it off. If anything the details in recordings are easier to pick up on now - production effects, rhythmical cues, playing nuances, all are laid out to be heard. They were always there, just not as apparent to me as they are now. So what I really meant to say when I said more analogue, was that I felt that the sound took me closer to the recording event, to the original analogue. Now, over the weekend I had the opportunity to show the SBooster (lid off) to a very experienced electronic engineering friend, and his comment was it looks to be some kind of low pass filter. Which, considering that the Touch has a cheap SMPS PSU(read that as inexpensive and electrically noisy) is just what's needed to remove the shit from the DC. Anyway, my experience with the SBooster has been largely positive, although the longer than normal late night listening sessions are beginning to take their toll, and I might have to invest in some matchsticks to keep my eyelids open. The player exerts far more influence on the sound than the instrument itself. A good instrument helps, but is not essential. A great player with an mediocre instrument will always come through and sound great, whereas a mediocre player with a great instrument will always sound mediocre. -- Stratmangler There is no element of personal attack in my response. Audiophile fussing got to me, as you're aware. I've had similar concerns once before - I went from one version of server to another, and the sound quality went from excellent to dreadful. I also posted on this section of the forum to see if anyone else had experienced the same issues. My problems were sorted out by an uninstal, registry cleanup, and totally clean reinstal. Since then I've not encountered any problems or noticed any audible differences when switching from one version to another. I also cannot hear any differences between wav and flac files. I have played around unpacking flacs to wavs and packing wavs up to flacs and listening to them - I'm buggered if I can detect any differences. So I fall into the very contented camp. Anyway, that's enough of this; may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sound quality between wav and flac
I find the paranoia behind this thread quite intriguing. Paranoia is the correct word to use, especially when comments are made about sounds being shortened by 10 cms or so. IT'S ONLY AUDIO, FOR GODS' SAKE !!! There are far more important things in life, such as family friends. Spend time with your kids. Go play football in the park with them, fly a kite, whatever. It's far more important because it's time you will not get again. If you don't like the SQ of such and such a version of Slimserver/Squeezecenter/Squeezebox Server that's fine. Stick with what you like and just get on with life. You don't have to use the latest version for things to work. Just use whatever it is that sounds good to you and be happy and enjoy the music. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Beatles 24 vs 16 bits...
EMI did future proof the Beatles remastering project as far as was possible - see this article http://www.theinsider.com/news/2102658_Re_Mastering_the_BEATLES_Catalog_The_Process I agree that the sample rate seems to be the key to improved audio - most of the music DVD's that I have are AC3 on the stereo tracks, which transcodes to 16/48 files. The audio on these discs is better than CD with no exceptions - perhaps I've been lucky in this respect. That said, I've also noted the improvements brought by HDCD when the files have been ripped using dBPoweramp with the DSP plugins installed. The resultant files are 24/44.1 . The audio improvements are worth pursuing. Back to The Beatles - it is perfectly feasible for EMI to release the albums at 24/192, all that is required is the will (on EMI's part) to do it. I can't imagine that this will happen anytime soon, for reasons of copyright security if nothing else. The potential of hi-res release does still remain.
