One of the audiophile "testers" was switching ISPs, and determined that
he could hear a difference in the sound depending on whether it came
over the coax cable broadband connection of his old provider or the
fiber optic connection of the new one.

Quoting this great comment on that thread:

I don't quite understand why this kind of unfettered product pimping via
pseudoscientific "tests" is not called out here, and yet a thread "why
was CD 44.1kHz", with no inflammatory happenings and just informative
posts (with even links from one of the engineers at Philips) is deleted
without fanfare.

I'm listening to BBC Radio 1 on my Yamaha receiver "net radio". The data
goes:

1. Through 1m of cat5e,
2. To an ASUS wireless access point in bridge mode,
3. Through WiFi 802.11a for about 25 feet to another floor,
4. To a Belkin WiFi router with DD-WRT, also acting as a transparent
bridge and switch,
5. Through a cat5e patch cable to a wall jack,
6. Through another 15 feet of structured Cat5e riser cable to a basement
patch panel,
7. Through another Cat5e patch cable to a D-Link managed gigabit
switch,
8. Another patch cable to a firewall appliance running on a VMWare
virtual machine on a Dell Optiplex,
9. Out another network adapter and patch cable to a Motorola cable
modem.
10. Converted into DOCSYS3 and sent out through coax RG6 to a customer
termination block,
11. Up the house pole, and across the street, where it is joined in with
the rest of the neighborhood cable plant,
12. Likely to a neighborhood hybrid fiber/coaxial termination
transponder,
13. Then via fiber to a cable company signal distribution hub and
headend, where it meets IP routers and many patch cables in the data
center,
14. Routed from Portland to Seattle and then to Kansas city through
interstate fiber feeds and paired commercial connections,
15. Received by a Lightwave Networks peering agreement router and then
ingressed into their content distribution network datacenter,
16. Where a signal is sent to me that has been repeated from a coastal
fiber endpoint such as Mae East, and then has crossed the Atlantic via
an undersea fiber optic cable,
17. and repeat this complexity backwards to get into the BBC to their
server farm, transcoding machines, digital studio workstations, serving
audio to DJs with a system like Prophet or Zetta off a digital music
datastore.

Exactly what Ethernet cable is preventing me from hearing the music
exactly like it would be heard in the studio or in another country?

In a foreshadowing of many future audiophile devices, John W Campbell,
the editor of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, and a big proponent
in the 1950s of the Hieronymus Machine, the Dean Drive, the Scientology
E-meter and other similar devices, showed by experiment that a schematic
of the Hieronymus machine drawn on paper worked just as well as the
device itself. This was, of course a not-at-all-double-blind test.

Great stories, Dave!

I still have my Transcriptors deck with the SME arm and Shure cartridge

damping fluid has gone away, so I haven't used it in quite a while. On

I remember the first time I heard stereophonic sound in the 1950s
("ping-pong stereo", with a real table tennis game!), which used a TV
tuned to the BBC for one channel and a radio tuned to the Third

At the BBC we always stored tapes (1/4" full-track mono or two-track
stereo) end out, so the pre-echo became a post-echo and thus less
obtrusive. Of course they then had to be re-wound before playback
This occasionally led to problems, particularly with the Arabic service,
which had tapes copied from a classic set of transcription records of
the Koran. Turns out it's quite difficult to tell when these are played
backwards, and some poor studio operator would occasionally get a call
from a listener and have to log the mistake.

Yes, it's Alex's turntable on which he plays the music of Ludwig van:

There's also one in the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in
New York:
https://www.moma.org/collection/works/3339

I really should replace the damping fluid, and I could also use a new
drive belt. Looking at it now, though, I see I have a V15 MkIV rather
than III. I still have the original Transcriptors arm, although I
replaced it with the SME as soon as I got the turntable (acquired in the
1970s as part of a deal with Clive Taylor, former bassist of Amen
Corner).

On another forum I see a mention that this album was recorded at
Advision Studios in London.

In 1969, Advision had an 8-track Scully recorder:

"In early 1968 Advision became the first studio in the UK to obtain a
professional 8-track recorder, which was built by Scully Recording
Instruments. Among the first artists to use the 8-track machine were T.
Rex, The Who, and Caravan. In 1970 the studio used a custom 24-channel
desk with an 8-track recorder."

When I worked at BBC External Services (1968-71) we still had sets of
78rpm transcription discs of some long works. The records in the set
were always cut alternately outside-in then inside-out. As noted
elsewhere in this thread, the shorter groove length at the inside of the
disc results in impaired fidelity. When playing the set, if all discs
were cut outside-in, the change in quality from one side to the next was
quite obvious. The transition from inner groove to inner groove followed
by outer groove to outer groove (and so on through the set) eliminated
this problem.

It's interesting to note that Nyquist's original paper, “Certain Topics
in Telegraph Transmission Theory” (which Claude Shannon relied heavily
upon while developing information theory in 1949), was first published
in 1924, when "high fidelity" in audio depended largely on how well
designed your recording and reproducing horns were. Nyquist worked for
Bell Labs, and was trying to get the most Morse code down the smallest
pipe, particularly important for the worldwide network of telegraph
cables, which were first laid in 1850 and continued in operation until
the 1960s.

I recently acquired a copy of this 1928 Bell Labs reprint of the
original 1924 paper, although I paid only $1.50 for my copy:

Assuming their refund includes the cost of return postage, you can buy
the postage on line at the USPS website, print a label on plain paper
and stick it on the package, then leave it out for your mailman to take

For overseas shipments, the USPS info that you enter when buying the
postage also includes Customs details, no separate form needed.
