Interesting. In the interests of science, I'll eat my transporter for

That's odd. The article that Triode linked to specifically stated that
you wouldn't damage connectors by connecting 50ohm to 75ohm and vice

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter as external DAC - which cable?

2006-10-16 Thread max . spicer

Thanks for that - I'm pretty certain it's 50ohm cable going by those
diagrams and descriptions.

I asked an electronics mate of mine and he said he didn't think it
would make much difference. He reckoned the most likely effect was
that it would lose signal strength (my words, not his) on account of
the reflections at the 75-50ohm and 50-75ohm transitions (again, my
words!). Given that it works as it is, and sounds a lot better than
the cd player, I think I'll stick! It's always fun to hear about the
theory though, even if I do only understand 50% of it. ;-)

Depends what you mean by network cable. Old ethernet cable and much
lab stuff is 50 ohm characteristic impedance. Patch cables used for
 telco transmission links [1.5M, 2M, 34M, 45M etc] is 75 ohm.

The bnc connectors should match the cable impedance - normally the 75
ohm ones don't have insulation around the earth connection - see here

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter as external DAC - which cable?

2006-10-15 Thread max . spicer

This morning, I just happened to be clearing out my loft and discovered
some ancient BNC network cable that I don't need. I therefore threw it
all in the bin. This afternoon, I started to think about buying a cable
to let me plug my CD player's digital output into the transporter. I
then suddenly realised what I'd thrown away this morning, so went and
raided my bin to get the BNC network cable back! Boy would I have
kicked myself if the bins had been collected! ;-) I now have the CD
player connected into the transporter with the BNC network cable and
can now use the transporter as an external DAC by selecting BNC Coax
S/PDIF from the Digital Inputs menu. It sounds fantastic - a huge
improvement on the cd player's DAC!

So, the inevitable question - should I be using an old (2-3m!) BNC
network cable in this situation? It clearly works and sounds better,
but would I get better results with different cable? I'm only really
asking out of curiosity as I hardly ever use my cd player these days,
so probably wouldn't be that interested in spending money anyway,
unless it was only a tenner or something!

Mine arrived today! I'm really impressed so far. The sound doesn't
jump out and grab you by the balls until you sit down and really listen
(i.e. move away from the knob, where you're getting too distracted).
Once you do that, you suddenly notice a vastly improved soundstage,
much more detail, and all sorts of bits you've never heard before.
It's a really nice, controlled sound with loads of range. And the knob
is cool!

I'm running with Mordaunt Short 906Is (£350), a Cambridge Audio Azur
640A V2 (£300), a £30 interconnect and £5/m speaker cable. This is
budget gear, but the Transporter still sounds great!

UPS charged duty as expected. The courier would have charged on
delivery, but I rang up and paid over the phone in advance as I was a
bit worried about whether I'd be available when it arrived and had
already heard Robin's horror story!

Did you get the silver or black version?
I've now plugged in my SB2 and synced it to the transporter so I can
change between the two with a button press on my remote. After quite a
bit of unscientific flicking between the two sources, my wife and I can
definitely tell the difference. Further more, my wife was able to
consistently identify the transporter with her eyes closed and me not
telling her which source was which (I didn't try).

One thing that did surprise me was how good the sb2 is. All the
differences I'd at first identified in the transporter were still there
in the sb2 (I find this is always the case when I listen to new gear
then go back to the old). The transporter is all about subtleties.
The soundstage is definitely better, there is definitely more detail,
there is more space to the sound and there's more oomph to the
dynamics. To quote my wife, it sounds like something has opened up
and let more air in. However, you need to listen carefully to hear
this! If you're not really paying attention, you could miss the change
between the sources. I think you'd pick it up in the overall sound over
prolonged listening, however.

Bottom line - think carefully before spending considerably more than on
your other components! It may well be true that you can achieve better
improvements through relative improvements in your amp, speakers etc.
You wouldn't end up with something looking as good as the transporter,
however, and I certainly don't regret it.

As I mentioned to you over IM yesterday, I'm getting pretty good
performance from older Rotel gear. Specifically, a RA-850 power amp

an RC-870BX preamp with the SB connected through the CD direct

You can pick this sort of stuff up reasonably cheaply on eBay.

Have a look under the Random Mix page of the web interface, or Select

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Edirol MA10As and small active speakers in general (yes, again!)

2005-10-28 Thread max . spicer

I'm really sorry to do this, but I've spent ages trawling through the
previous posts on this subject, and still haven't come up with a
solution. I promise to start a wiki on this if I get some useful
feedback. Is that a sufficient punishment for raising this issue
*again*?

I want to plug my eagerly awaited sb3 into some active speakers and sit
it on top of a wardrobe in my bedroom. I'm currently looking at a pair
of Edirol MA10As which I've found for £80 online. Could anyone with
experience of these speakers tell me what they think of them? Are
there any other similarly priced speakers that I should get instead?
My ideal would be some tiny, great-sounding speakers that I can take on
holiday with me and plug a Karma into. However, they'll be spending
most of their time in one place, so portability is a secondary concern
over sound quality. At this price range, I trust the sb's dac over
anything built into speakers, so analog only speakers is fine. I don't
want a separate amp, so it's active speakers only.

Thanks, and apologies again!

One concern I have about the Edirols is that I've heard they might kick
out rather too much bass. I'm after a nice rounded sound, not
something that's stupidly bottom heavy (especially in a bedroom and on
top of a wardrobe!). Are the MA15Ds better using just analog? Have
you seen the MA10As at under £80? I haven't found them any cheaper
yet.

Thanks,

Max

The MA10's are excellent speakers, £80 seems quite expensive for the
analogue version of the speakers though.

If you can stretch further, the MA15D's are definitely better, they
have a nicer finish, are better built (better switches) and have more
bass (they have an amp in each speaker). They are quite heavy though.

Alternatively, the MA20's have also been discontinued so you could keep
an eye out for a set.

At the price range, the Edirol's are better than most speakers and for
their size they kick out a lot of bass.

I hope this helps a bit, if you have any questions, just let me know, I
have both the MA10D's and MA15D's for when I demo squeezebox's so can
 attempt to answer aany questions.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Looking for advice on sound quality

2005-10-03 Thread max . spicer

The ones that you rip in non-secure mode will potentially not sound as
good as the ones that you do in secure mode. In secure mode, they are
guaranteed to be an exact copy of your cd. It depends on whether you
actually sit in front of your pc whilst it's ripping. I did my 300 odd
albums in secure mode over a month or so. I'd put a new cd in whenever
I noticed that the old one had finished, then would go off and do
whatever else needed doing around the house. The difference between 3
minutes and 7 was therefore fairly irrelevant.

The nice thing about the combination of secure mode and flac is that
you know you will never have to rerip. With anything else, you're not
quite so future proof.

Max

Mike Anderson Wrote:
OK, well I set up EAC/FLAC on my PC according to all the instructions,
and it seems to be running OK.

However, it's still taking somewhere between 5-10 minutes to rip most
of my CDs. I've got hundreds of CDs, so it's a major undertaking.

Question: What am I losing by not running EAC in secure mode? Doing
so substantially cuts down on the ripping time. So how much difference
 does it really make?

Can I use secure mode on those CDs I really care about (about 20% of
them) and unsecure mode on the rest of them, or would that present
 problems?

No. The gain adjustments are done with 24 bit precision, so it's
very unlikely that you'd hear any quality issues. Also, if you don't

have replaygain tags (or the equivalent ID3 or iTunes settings) for

It's simply a convenience thing. Not having to potentially have to
reach for the volume control every time a new track is played in
shuffle mode could be considered a sufficient advantage to outweigh a
potential loss in sound quality. However, when listening to albums,
you should only have to adjust the volume once, so getting the best
