Thanks for the article, great info. Are there any considerations that
need to be given to the power amps rated input impedance vs the
Transporters?

for instance I am considering an amp. has an input impedance of 10 ohms
(so says the spec. sheet) but it doesn't give the input sensitivity...

I hope this isn't off topic, but something I noticed on the Rothwell
site is a claimed 10db SNR improvement by using the balanced
attenuators between a preamp and amp*. Wouldn't that be impossible if
the preamp had an analog volume control?

Maybe the reason it seems on-topic is because of the great alternative
Clive posted.

*Although the attenuators can be used on the inputs of the pre-amp in
exactly the same way as they would be used on an integrated amp (with
the same benefits), alternatively they can be used between the pre-amp
and the power amp to even greater effect. When used this way, not only
is system gain reduced by 10dB, but the signal to noise ratio is
improved by 10dB.

I think what Rothwell are trying to point out is that by adding the
attenuators after the preamp, you reduce the noise of the preamp along
with the signal, whereas if you put them before the preamp, you reduce
the incoming signal and then get the preamp's noise added.

There are only two reasons I can think of why you'd ever want to put
attenuators in front of a preamp:

1. The source component has such a high output that it overloads the
preamp input circuitry.
2. Although the input isn't overloaded, the output gets to its maximum
possible at very low volume control settings. In this case using an
attenuator would allow a more reasonable range of use for the volume
control.

Apart from these situations, I can't see any reason to put attenuators
in front of the preamp. It nearly always make more sense to put them in
front of the power amp.

Then I'd have a short paragraph in the BeginnersGuideOverview page
 along the lines of

I linked to it from the Beginner's Guide and the Beginner's Guide

I did not mention the Transporter or anything to do with the

If you read the references, in order, they all lead up to making the

Absolutely, as you indicated, it's a wiki.

I just didn't want to include it in the list with everything else. It
has so many extra connections that would have to be explained: BNC
digital in/out, AES/EBU in/out, XLR out, that the page would increase
in size tremendously without offering much of value to the typical
Squeezebox newbie, which would be about 80-90% of people directed to
that page.

I was just thinking that someone who spends $2000 US would have made
the conscious decision to do so, knowing why they are spending extra,
and may even have bought it for these very connections.

One minor point - somewhere in there was a link to a post by Sean Adams
where he states that each level on the 100 point volume scale is a dB.
I think it's .5 dB actually, and IIRC he corrects himself later in that
 thread.

ooh, nice catch! I rea somewhere and thus knew it was .5 dB but did not
see that difference in the post... do you have the correction reference?
I will hunt for it too if I can find it. If you have the correction I
will add it.

Thanks!

I am sure I speak for MarkL (and I know I speak for myself) when I say
thank you! Not like we get more SB3s or anything ;-) Since this is my
first wiki creation (such as it is) postive feedback is definately
appreciated.

Yes, thanks totoro. I didn't respond because I wasn't sure who you
were addressing - Eric got this thread started and ceejay gave a good
idea.

My understanding is that PREAMP volume control is implemented in the
DAC, but VOLUME control is implemented in the CPU.

That is true, but they are still both the same kind of digital
function. Although the preamp control is done in the DAC chip, it is
still really before the DAC.

The reason we do it in the DAC chip (instead of just applying
additional attenuation using the software volume control) is that we
want the preamp setting to only apply to the DAC and not the S/PDIF.

2007-01-18 Thread Skunk

Good job, something like this was needed. Unfortunately they will still
ask how to hook up and use integrated amps/receivers, especially the
volume control.

I would also point out that the opening line reads like a poor
translation:
The Transporter and Squeezebox make a novel configuration option for
the stereo system available.

Better would be Tx and Sb _provide_ a novel config opt for _some_
stereo systems.

Someone will be along shortly to grade you on the science portion :-)

There is a wiki page AvReceivers from MarkL there
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?AVReceivers
I don't see it linked in anywhere that I can find yet.

Thanks for the correction, its a first draft. Change made.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: New WIKI - Connecting SB3/Transporter directly to an Amplifier w/o Preamp

2007-01-18 Thread chiefersone

I have the SB going into an Adcom gtp600 preamp tied to a 6 zone
amplifier that I am able to get all the volume I desire with, but my
problem lies in that I took an RCA interconnect to my downstairs Denon
A/V receiver to play SB in basement and at full volume I can't get the
loudness I am seeking. I split the SB signal after my Adcom GTP 600
and before it goes into my 6 zone amplifier which powers all of my
upstairs zones. Should I have split the SB signal some other way?

That was me. I'm not quite sure where to link it from - I didn't find
an appropriate place in the Beginner's Guide. So for now I'll just
post the link when I see a question in the forums.

For that matter, the Beginner's Guide doesn't have anything on what you
connect the Squeezebox to. It looks like we have a good start for
putting something in here, we can suggest a home stereo system, a
preamp, an integrated amp, direct into a power amp or into an A/V
receiver.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: New WIKI - Connecting SB3/Transporter directly to an Amplifier w/o Preamp

2007-01-18 Thread ceejay

Well the first page is the BeginnersGuide and it is meant to be just the
headlines with shortcuts to the pages with more info. The
BeginnersGuideOverview goes into more detail and is intended to be
readable in its own right.

I did start to draft a paragraph to go in the Overview page but quickly
formed the view that actually we need a page along the lines of
BeginnersGuideToConnections, or similar, which could cover

- what the analog and digital outputs are for and some of the
advantages of each (this comes up quite a lot in the Forums)

- connecting into a integrated audio amplifier

- connecting directly to a power amplifier (xref to poweramp page)

- connecting into an AV receiver (xref to AVReceivers page)

- connecting to a DAC

Then I'd have a short paragraph in the BeginnersGuideOverview page
along the lines of

you need to conenct the outputs of your Squeezebox to the inputs of
your audio amplifier in just the same way that you now would connect a
CD player. There are several advanced options, however, which are
discussed here. (link to new page)

Anyone feeling bold?
