Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best possible sound from "Squeezebox" - which way should I go
Haven't tried one of these myself, but I would be willing to bet that it's absolutely top notch quality. https://www.kitsunehifi.com/product/holoaudio-red-ddc-network-streamer/ Personally, I use a NUC running Debian and Squeezelite. I'm using a real time kernel, and have configured SL to run in real time with the highest priority. I connect to my DAC (Spring 3 KTE by the aforementioned company) via USB as this DAC has one of the absolute best USB interfaces on the market. For good measure I've also got the NUC powered with a linear power supply, just because I had one on hand that was the correct voltage. Whether the power supply makes a difference, who knows? Makes me feel cooler tho. The options I use for squeezelite: Code: $ cat /etc/systemd/system/squeezelite.service [Unit] Description=Squeezelite After=network.target systemd-udev-settle.service [Service] ExecStart=/usr/bin/squeezelite -b 2048:1048576 -o hw:CARD=Enhanc,DEV=0 -n Lyra -m b8:ae:ed:72:d1:83 -C 2 -p 1 -M "Holo Spring 3 KTE" Nice=-10 IOSchedulingClass=realtime User=root [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target Sounds most excellent. The only reason for me to purchase a fancy streamer device would be for a fancy case, but most don't work with LMS, and going the DIY route gives me total control. I've got AirPlay, HQPlayer NAA, Squeezelite, and Roon all set up. spacecase-25's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=73221 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113147 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I try out a SoTM SMS-200 streamer right now into a Quad USB DAC (450 euro when new). I compare it to my SBT with linear PSU and its analogue outputs. I hear no difference. Maybe others do, but I don't. Oh yes, some make it vodoo! We have occasional earthquakes and tremors around here and I've not heard any vibration when these occur, at least when my power stays on. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best possible sound from "Squeezebox" - which way should I go
What I have learned in my journey from analoge sources (LPs) to digital music sources is that much more problems needs to resolved when you choose the digital path. Beside all discussion of technical components there are two main concerns: vibration and power. 1) *Vibration:* the complete chain - even starting from by internet router - must be placed on a vibration less surface. And if the device (eg. a RPi box) has a light weight, it is helpful to put some extra weight on it for stabilization (granit, steel, ...) 2) *Power:* good clean power is very essential. It depends from the quality what is deliverd into your house. You should definitly concider not to use a standard power adapter (PSU) for an RPi box. There are many soltions available such as Keces. Additional it might be worth to check out filters or other fancy solutions. Lot of tests and experiments are useful and might bring surprising results. It's not Voodoo. My chain looks as follows. 1) *rPI3 with LMS and Squeezelite powered by Keces DC-116* - Upsampling all sources to highest level through Squezzelite - *Allo DigiOne* for SPDIF Output (what I do like about this component is that it has reclocking functionality on board). 2) *Mutec MC-3+ Smart Clock USB *(for reclocking purposed - amazing impovement) 3) *Rega DAC R* (possible an area of improvement, would love to test/go for a NOS DAC). 4) *Unison Research Sinfonia *(new component in my chain ) 5) *Klipsch Forte III* I have tested integrated and expensive network streamers to replace 1,2,3 but was never convinced - not only because I am an LMS enthusiastic. Living Room: piCorePlayer 6.1.0 on rPi 3B+ & Allo DigiOne & 1TB USB (LMS 8.0.0 & Squeezelite) & Keces DC-116, Mutec MC-3+ Smart Clock, Rega DAC R, Unison Research Sinfonia, Klipsch Forte III. With two Pi4 players configured, one Coax-> DAC, the other USB into the same Topping E30 DAC, I can't tell a difference. The cheaper Topping DAC probably outperforms the older non-USB Schiit DAC (and my ears). Another option: Consider the original Digione Player (not Signature). $270 US at Allo site with an aluminum case and an upgraded Nirvana power supply. Maybe other sellers have it available to consider due to shipping distance from India. Tough to beat this deal. Google it for comparisons with the Signature, some say minimal sound quality difference if any. Less hassle with dual power supplies too. I own one, and it's been a great replacement for my SB3/receiver unit. Recently upgraded to the Nirvana power supply, and to me there seems to be an appreciable difference from the stock PSU, particularly at low volume for some reason. I run it into an audio video receiver which has it's own DAC. The output from this unit is SPDIF., so make sure your DAC is compatible. Honestly, I don't know Edwin; there's nothing stopping a Pi-HAT based DAC from being excellent. For my Pi4 based player I went with the HifiBerry Digi+ Pro digital interface rather than a DAC simply because I had an external DAC. And I've picked up a second external DAC not just because I'm curious as to how my several years old Schiit compares, but because external DACs have their useful purposes too. Chromecast Audio sounds tons better (like your experience with the Touch) through a DAC (CCAs have a dual purpose 3.5mm line out / TOSLINK socket) and we use streaming and castable services a great deal here including Youtube Music. I have plans to put a Pi based player into an antique radio cabinet along with a small audio amp; I'm sure I'll use a DAC HAT for that. *Server*: LMS 8.x nightly, Raspberry Pi OS booting off external 'USB SATA drive dock' (https://www.inateck.com/media/catalog/product/cache/e4d64343b1bc593f1c5348fe05efa4a6/6/1/61j8z8y0vpl__sl1300_.jpg) with 1TB SSD *Home Office*: Squeezelite player via server-mounted HifiBerry Digi+ Pro HAT -> Schiit DAC -> ARCAM FMJ A19 + Monitor Audio Silver *Family System*: Squeezebox original or Chromecast Bridge plugin + Chromecast Audio TOSLINK -> DAC -> Onkyo AV Receiver / Klipsch 6.1 config *Phone*: Squeeze Player, Squeezer on Android *Other Players*: Large number of Chromecast capable devices yvrmike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=70865 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113147 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

sota748 wrote: > DAC`s i didn´t know, Can you anything about the sound from them? Hi Dan, My needs are more modest than yours I'm sure; I'm a "good sound at a not painful price" sort. That said you might want to experiment a bit more (as you have been) before committing which is why I threw out the inexpensive DAC idea. You could incrementally experiment with a Pi4 by acquiring a digital output hat supporting at least Coax output and feed that to -> your existing DAC. If you are happy with that, based on your first post it seems you'll need a second DAC. The Topping brand ranges from the inexpensive but well-reviewed and beyond. You'll find all manner of DAC brands reviewed on Audio Science Review: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?forums/digital-to-analog-dac-review-and-discussion.10/ They are generally technical reviews not audiophile but may serve as a good starting point for exploration. The entry-level Topping units offer good value and surprisingly good technical performance. I haven't bought one yet but intend to and look forward to comparing it to my now some years old Schiit DAC. I'll probably get the low-cost Topping E30 which is readily available here in Canada (edit, ordering it now for the family entertainment centre, or my office, whichever use case wins ;-) ) - it has 3 digital inputs (USB, TOSLINK and Coax S/PDIF) selectable from the front panel. No balanced output, only RCA - they do have units with XLR out. I did exactly this using piCorePlayer, although I had a now older Schiit Bifrost DAC already on hand and idle, so am using a Hifiberry Digi+ Pro HAT to provide S/PDIF output to the external DAC. in A-B comparisons (the Bifrost allows me to switch between Coax/TOSLINK inputs) between playing ripped CDs directly, or through the Pi4 running piCorePlayer with a Hifiberry Digi Pro into the DAC, I can't hear a difference... which makes sense. It's a digital signal in both cases until converted by the DAC. If others with better ears can hear a difference it doesn't matter, they aren't sitting in my office or living room and never will be. Originally I'd split the player and server into two Pi4s but decided for my office space to run them both on one, playing through the Schiit DAC into my all analogue ARCAM FMJ A19 integrated amp. In the end, I decided to consolidate player and mass storage on one Pi4, running Raspberry OS (Lite) instead of piCoreLite (I have other services running on the box), configured to boot off a 1TB SSD in a USB drive dock. Being very happy with the results, I'm looking to get a second Hifiberry product - possibly a DAC this time - for a second player on the livingroom system although I might yet again go for an external DAC like one of the well-reviewed and very inexpensive Topping DACs and again feed it from a Digi+ Pro. And then there's an original Squeezebox kicking about here to put back to work. Pi4 and mass storage tech and prices being what they are, this is a golden age! Hopefully, Google opens up an API for Youtube Music. A plugin for that would be terrific. yvrmike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=70865 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113147 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

The SPDIF output is isolated from the RPi4B side. Hi, sorry, the Transporter is not longer available, its making another user happy already :-). but the Touch and the Classic are still there... @Dan: I've not read the whole thread, but if you have an external DAC maybe a good alternative to the transporter is a SMS 200 streamer from SOTM. this device is also able to act as a squeezelite device and IMHO it sounds better then the Transporter. Unfortunately, these are only found in the US, and import duties are expensive (about 1/3 of the price) in Denmark where I live :(, if I only could find one in the EU This would be the nicest looking solution, I really want to hear a transporter on my system Thanks for the Reply Dan RPI newbie sota748's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=70197 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113147 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

"New Old Stock" knob-less Transporters are going for $500 on eBay with shipping. So long as your files top out at 24/96, it's as good as it gets. Hi Sota, since you are already familiar with raspberry Pi and piCorePlayer, you might want to give a try to hifiberry (rasp + daughter card for good quality DAC) I did try this, compared with my transporter and I found that the hifiberry is very good for its price. cheers. guilux's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=70845 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=113147 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
