Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Squeezebox Duet and Beresford Caiman DAC
I think that when used as digital transports, any audible differences between the Touch and SB3 must certainly reflect the jitter-sensitivity noise-susceptibility etc of the DAC(?) For instance, I recently had a chance to play with a Touch alongside an SB3 and a separate transport - all into a Benchmark PRE. Result: Absolutely no difference that any of us could hear, within the several systems tried. However, the Benchmark is an Ultralock design (not a PLL-design): It is noted for its highly-isolated conversion clock and for showing no measurable jitter-induced artifacts resulting from normal use of any of its digital interfaces. Keep in mind that I am most admittedly NOT an expert - so if there is somehow more to the story, I'd like to hear it as much as anybody else! :) -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78036 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Hi I have been meaning to do this for a while, when first installed I couldn't live with the Duet against the CD5i, the sound was dull and lifeless in comparison, the DAC solved that (bought used, so already run in). Approx nine months on the Duet is well run in and the difference is not so great but it is still noticeably better with the DAC than without, just more of everything, more life and groove, more toe tapping! I would be very interested to try the Caiman or upgrading my DAC internally, from what people are saying (I haven't heard one) I reckon a Touch might outperform a standard T-7510 so might need a Caiman to improve it. I put my Panasonic Blu-ray through the DAC for music DVD and I can't tell any difference whatsoever between the DAC and anolouge output from the TV, so may try a Touch and not bother with a DAC, decisions decisions! Dave HI, Im using a Touch with a modded Caiman Dac. I've upgraded the Regulators and the Output capacitors, which gave a great upgrade to the standard Dac. Its fair to say that the Dac Im using is a fair bit better than the standard 7510(I've also owned a 7510 MK6/3 and a standard 7520), and I've compared the Touch analogue with it running into my Dac. The Dac is better..more of everything..just plays music not hifi. That said, I could live with the analogue outss on the Touch if I didnt have the Dac, its very very good, a lot better than the SB3 I owned previously. Guess Im saying you would get away with just using the Touch on its own, I'd equate it with a very good £600 CD player...but as a digital transport its capable of a whole lot more. Hi, using a modded Caiman here (See AOS Forum for details..) with my new Touch, used it previoulsy with my SB Classic.. I use a coax rather than an Optical link as I found co-ax to be better sounding. One thing ive noticed about the Beresford is that it can show up differences in whatever is fed into it quite easily.. For instance my Touch is obviously a much better digital transport than my SB3..sounds very much better. Also, while I was waiting on my Touch arriving, I had sold my SB3 and was using my DVD player playing MP3s through the Beresford. Have to say..going from this to my Touch was quite the revelation. So if your happy as you are (and you WILL be :)) co-ax into the Caiman is the way to go...use Fixed outputs not the variable ones unless you are running the Dac as a preamp into a Power Amp. Oh, and I would give your new Dac a few weeks (Id say 6) to fully run in, as the sound you get at the start is very different from 6 weeks on. Further down teh line you can upgrade the Dac with different Opamps (easy job) or more hard core mods like upgrading the Output caps and Regulators (hard!)
