[AZORES-Genealogy] new to group, researching Simoes and Bento of MA/RI areas
Hello everyone, I am new and found this group after some dead ends on Ancestry.com. My husband's father was Salvador Simoes, who we believe was born in Fall River, MA about 1926. He died in 1996 after a 30-year estrangement from his sons, and he lived only an hour from us at the time ... very sad story. His grandmother was Maria Bento Simoes, and his grandfather was Manuel Simoes. I am finding some records, but nothing matches up exactly. We believe that both may have been from Sao Miguel, and that they lived in the Fall River / New Bedford / Cranston RI areas. Both died in Cranston. A Manuel Simoes immigrated in 1913, listing a wife 'Maria'; and a Maria Simoes immigrated in 1916 and there was an older man named Bento on the same ship as Maria, all from Sao Miguel. Salvador served in WWII, but outside of his later years in New Hampshire, we cannot find any record of him, linking him to the various Manual/Maria Simoes combinations. His sisters were Irene Hurley (Cranston, RI) and Stella Lamarre, and there may be brothers we are not aware of. First, I want to ask if there is a place we can visit in the New Bedford or RI areas to get some help with Portuguese records? Secondly, any thoughts about why Salvador does not seem to exist in records from 1926 until much, much later in his life? Thank you! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] new to group, researching Simoes and Bento of MA/RI areas
Pam, Are you sure of the death date? I found a ss death record for Salvadore S Simoes born 22 Jul 1926, died in Bow, NH 31 Oct 2006. He's buried in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. FIND A GRAVE memorial #72707482 Do you have an obit? If the birth date is correct, you can get a copy at the Fall River City Hall. It,s $15 - $20. If you are looking for Portuguese records for his parents, you need to find out what village in Sao Miguel. The records from about 1880 back are at the Dartmouth, MA, Family History Center, 400 Cross Rd. They are open Friday nights 6:30 - 9:30, and Saturday 10:00 - 2:00. The person who knows the most about the records will be there this coming Saturday. If you don't know the village, what was the exact date they arrived? The immigration record may have the village. Pam M, Your 2 questions: First, I want to ask if there is a place we can visit in the New Bedford or RI areas to get some help with Portuguese records? You're not ready to utilize the Portuguese records yet. You'll need to confirm that the island is indeed Sao Miguel and then find the freguesia (fregh-Z-ah) which is the village. Most of Europe is that way (find the village). I have a how to guide posted here on the Azores Genweb: goo.gl/9CO4r You might want to bookmark the Azores Genweb site: goo.gl/HuNWh Tracing your ancestor(s) in America and collecting all the clues and analyzing them will help you find the freguesia over there. One man on this list started about 10 weeks ago and he just found one freguesia on one ancestor! Your 2nd question: Secondly, any thoughts about why Salvador does not seem to exist in records from 1926 until much, much later in his life? You don't say what records you have searched. Judy P. gave you something that she found. However, if a person was born about 1926, they would not be an adult until about 1944. It's tough to find records on people between the 1940s to the present due to privacy and stuff like that. You will be able to find them on the 1940 census (just released) when it's fully indexed. Since he served in WWII, you'll find records on that. The rest will be you sleuthing via the how to link I posted above. Good luck. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] new to group, researching Simoes and Bento of MA/RI areas
Pam, Cheri is right, if you can download her guide, save print it out like I did, it really helped me start using a process, after I first joined the group I realized I didn't have a clue what I was doing. There are a number of places to look here in the USA first before using the govt pages, I happen to just have some luck, a genealogist happen to notice one of the surnames i'm looking for and asked for the names I had. Just so happens we're cousins and he gave me the baptismal record for my GGgrandmother, her village, parents and grand parents. Pure luck for me, but it also takes a bunch of effort and patience. Took me a bit to figure that out. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] new to group, researching Simoes and Bento of MA/RI ar...
The key to research in the Azorean Islands is to learn FIRST which village your ancestors came from. This can be a frustrating task ... but a near 100% requirement. There are exceptions but they are few. As Cheri Mello advised, research ALL available records in USA first. This would include every church record that you can locate (including cemetery records), look at every census record (state and federal), locate all civil records (birth marriage death). Look for local probate records, property records, legal records. Exhaust all potential sources in USA that might hint at locale of origin or family connections that might offer alternative avenues for research. A note on an exception: if you know two items: exact date of death on an island AND the island .. there is a chance that you can write to the specific Portuguese archive for that island and they may locate the village. That is the only Portuguese alternative that I have used with success. There are currently no central databases ... all exist by village The passenger lists are another useful way to see if you can find a village of origin ... but these are US records. Pam S, The Madeiran Government has their CCA web site, but it's called ARM (Arquivo Regional Madeira). They have the most records at this time. The link you sent was Portuguese Marriages so I missed it in the listing, as I was looking for something that said Funchal. They have only 59,000 marriages listed. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Help with confirming Nordeste natural - Guimar da Costa last name
I have them as Francisco de Melo Ferraz viuvo (widow of unnamed spouse), native of Ribeira Grande com Antonia do Canto (or Soares or Cezar, she goes by other names), filha de Manuel Furtado Barreto, defunto (deceased) and Guiomar da Costa Gudinho (Godinho), all residents of Nordeste. This latter couple, unfortunately, is not listed in Nordeste, but would have married circa 1675. I believe they may have married in Nordestinho but those records were probably lost and never transferred to Nordeste like many others of Nordeste that cannot be found. I could be wrong and maybe someone has them from another village. You can probably look up Francisco de Melo Ferraz in Ribeira Grande, as Ferraz is a well known name in Sao Miguel. I just looked at who sent the message and it is you, Margaret! Let me know if you need anything else. Well they don't even have the option to index it is why I asked if you knew when they would start. I know the actual digitizing it will take awhile but indexing would help. They also have Baptism for Funchal also, They should change the title so it says Madeira on it kind of confusing. Now does ARM have the actual records online or just index?
