Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Vila do Porto - Santa Maria (Pedro Francisco de Bairos and Anna de Andrade Poim)

2017-02-12 Thread Margaret Vicente
George and Angela,

First and regarding the name, it was originally spelt "DuRciana" (as shown
on the record) currently spelt DuLciana.

My ancestors are Pedro *Garcia* de Bairos and Dulciana Magalhaes, married
Jun 18 1606.

This Couple Pedro Francisco de Bairos and Ana de Andrade married January 8
1680 are not my line.

Angela, I have to agree with you that Rodrigo Rodrigues Genealogies do not
match the Groom's parents on this marriage record.

Here's what I have for the parents of the groom:

Pedro Garcia Pereira or de Bairos marriage to Dulciana Magalhaes is in
Rodrigo Rodrigues Genealogies. Capitulo 62 Setion 1 number 3.

John Roias (JR) helped me with this line.

2017-02-12 Thread M. Stringer
Greetings,

Orig: Search 1: ‘in Common With’ comparison between husband and male,
identified 4th cousin.

Definitely paternal line to 2xpaternal grandmother, wife of his 2xpaternal
grandfather.

The comparison male of her sister. The shared ancestors are her parents.

The Xmatch female included in the ‘in common with’ results responded to
email.

She is the niece of the comparison male, thus 4th cousin, 1xRemoved.
Verified paper and DNA

How is the paternal XMatch explained?

"In Common With" is a list of names that match you and the other person.
Across ALL lines. It may or may not contain X matches.

Cousin Vicky matches my mom on one line and she also matches my dad on one
of his American lines.

I suggest your contact your husband's project admin for more advice. The

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Great Grandparents

2017-02-12 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I gave you 5 children which span about 10 years of their marriage so there very
well could be more after Francilina. This Henerio could be one of the brothers
you are looking for. Not sure where you got the name Hnorio from but it could
be a miss- spelling.

Do you know what year they came to the US? I would suggest looking in the US
census for them which will give you a good year to start looking for their
birth. The US census is on line for free if you know where to look.

I can send you a GEDCOM which you can load into Roots magic. I will have some
time to work on it tomorrow.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for our ancestors who migrated from Azore Islands to Hawaii

2017-02-12 Thread 'John Raposo' via Azores Genealogy
Dear Caroline,Greetings! The name would probably have been Raposo da Costaand
you should certainly continue to search for your ancestry. But I would like to
save you from disappointment. Ihave been researching Azorean genealogies for at
least 25 years and I have takenon many research projects over the years. As
part of my research I have becomevery familiar with Azorean nobility. The title
of Duke was never conferred uponany Azorean (except for non-Azoreans who helped
D. Maria II take back Terceir in the struggle with her uncle D. Miguel.)
Marquês was considered the most prestigious of Azorean titles.Other titles
included Conde, Visconde, Barão. Rarely did these propertied noblesemigrate.
(The Barão das Laranjeiras did re-locate to Brazil and died there, but was
brought back for burial). In only other two cases did I find noblemen(Visconde
de Vale da Costa;  lived in theUS, and that is because he was appointed
Portuguese Consul to Boston and didnot return to Portugal and the Visconde de
Porto Martim who emigrated toBrazil) who emigrated; neither one was from S.
Miguel. Vale da Costa hasdescendants in the Framingham area. Most nobles would
have been granted a coat of armsalthough there are some exceptions. Those
coats-of-arms are all detailed andillustrated in Tombo Heráldico dos
Açores:Cartas de Brasão de Armas – Heráldica Episcopal, António Ornelas Mendes
andJorge Forjaz, (Caixa Económica da Misericórdia, Angra do Heroísmo: 2014.)
Thereis no Raposo da Costa from S. Miguel in the book. An exhaustive sourcefor
all Portuguese noble titles is Afonso Eduardo Martins Zúquete, António
Sérgioand António Machado de Faria, Nobreza dePortugal e do Brazil, Editorial
Enciclopédia, Lisbon: 1961.Over the last 30 yearsI have met many, many Azorean
Americans who have been told that theirgrandfather or great grandfather was a
titled nobleman, or the illegitimate sonof one. In a half dozen cases I have
found that those claims (legitimate orillegitimate) were true. Many Azorean
Americanfamilies have these family legends, my own family included.
Unfortunately, theyare legends, albeit sometimes with a tiny grain of truth. I
tell you all ofthis only to spare you chasing a red-herring. But by all means,
research yourancestry. You never know what you will find and no doubt your
family history isas fascinating as that of any nobleman’s family.Let me know if

Thanks everyone for your input on this.

Margaret... I too am a direct descendant of this couple. Slowly I've been
working my way back and was pretty excited when I found this record.

Angela... what is the RR book (it sounds like something that I should learn
more about)

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Frank Gomes and Manuel Gomes

2017-02-12 Thread Cheri Mello
California births began in 1905, but they took about 15 years to be in
compliance.
A variety of CA Birth Indices can be found on the FamilySearch Wiki here:
https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/How_to_Find_California_Birth_Records

I'd try the 3rd one. My dad is misindexed and some of the searches don't
use Soundex. The 3rd one uses Soundex on the last name (picks up Gomes and
Gomez). And if you still don't find him, it probably wasn't filed. If he
didn't have one, but received Social Security, he may have filed a Delayed
Certificate of Birth in the 1930s. And do as Rosemarie suggested and try
for the church baptism.

On the one with the date discrepancy, go with the WWI Draft date first. He
was the one who gave the info to the Draft board. He did not supply his
birth date on the death certificate because he was already dead. His son,
who may have been upset at the death, may not have been thinking clearly
and goofed. Or really didn't know. But I'd make the WWI Draft his main
birth date and keep the other one as secondary until you figure out
otherwise.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Frank Gomes and Manuel Gomes

2017-02-12 Thread 'Caroline Gomes' via Azores Genealogy

Hi all,

Just an update on what I have found so far.

I had been focusing my newspaper search to the Santa Cruz County and
Stanislaus County areas, using Newspapers.com, Legacy.com and Archives.com
. Thank you Cheri for the link to the Portuguese papers archives.

Frank Gomes

- Santa Cruz County is not able to find his birth certificate….looking
under Francis, Francisco or Frank. I was able to obtain original marriage
and death certs for him and they only list 'California' as his place of
birth. Both of those documents have him listed as Frank Gomes. Everyone in
the family says that he was born in Watsonville. So I will try Monterey
County and even Stanislaus County, where his siblings were born.

Manuel Enos Gomes

We are still looking for an exact place of birth for him. I was able to
find his death certificate. He was admitted to the Stockton State Hospital
in 1940 and died there April 30, 1942. His draft card which has his mark
(X) witnessed by someone (dated Sept 12, 1918), shows his date of birth as
Oct 4, 1873 but his death certificate shows the date of birth as Sept 4,
1875. The informant listed on his death certificate were both Hospital
Records and his son, Frank Gomes.. So we have a difference in the date of
birth.

He received a consent to marry in 1910 Mary A Brown of Watsonville. They
were listed on the 1920 census in Stanislaus County as the head of
household and listed coming to the USA in 1906.

In the 1930 census of Stanislaus County, he was missing from the
household as Mary A Gomes was listed as the head of household. Manuel
reappears in the 1940 census as the head of household, living with his son,
Frank and Frank's wife, and their daughter, Joann. Then a month later, it
looks like he was admitted to Stockton State Hospital.

Manuel was listed as divorced on the death certificate. Mary A. Silva
Gomes did remarry in the early 1930's to a Jack Silva. I am now going to
contact Stanislaus County to see about the divorce records of Manuel and
Mary.

I was able to get in touch with the California State archives about the
stay at the State Hospital. As you all may know, there is a 75 year
restriction on accessing medical records in the state archives, based on
the date of last contact. So, April 2017 ends the restriction. But they
were able to tell me that there was not any mention of a specific place of
birth.

Whew!

Caroline

[AZORES-Genealogy] Looking for our ancestors who migrated from Azore Islands to Hawaii

2017-02-12 Thread Reposo De Costa
We are researching our ancestors Manuel Reposo/Reposa DeCosta from the
Azore Islands who migrated to the Hawaiian Islands. Head of household was
Manuel, wife's name was Maria. Our grandmother Maria Raposa/Raposa Decosta
was born in around 1898 in Hawaii. Our grandmother had a family crest
which indicated that my uncle was a Duke, my grandmother died and we could
not find the papers/crest. We are wondering what royal family are we
related to. The family crest was passed down to our Uncle, who then was
called a Duke. Any information on this would be much appreciated. Thank
you.

[AZORES-Genealogy] DNA Study involving Grandparent/Grandchild

2017-02-12 Thread Cheri Mello
Blaine Bettinger is doing a DNA study on the X chromosome and wants a
sample size of 500. He's got 150 now. So if you've tested a
grandparent/grandchild (or you ARE either the grandparent/grandchild),
please consider submitting to the study. You don't need a grandparent from
each side, but if you have a grandparent from each side, it would be really
good for Blaine.

He's studying the recombination rate of the X chromosome. What that means
is how badly the cards get shuffled (DNA) when it gets passed down to the
next generation.
