An opinion from the New bedford Whaling Museum

The William M. Wood Foundation is a legacy of a grandson of William M. Wood
(1858-1926), an immigrant from the Azores, whose father was an Azorean
whaler on a New Bedford whale ship. His original named was William Silva.
Wood began his career in textiles at the Wamsutta Mill, rising to become a
textile magnate, eventually heading a mill conglomerate, which became the
American Woolen Company

Here is another opinion on the real name of William J Wood from the
Wikipedia page for his son William M Wood:

William Wood was born in 1858 in a cottage on Pease Point Way, in Edgartown,
Massachusetts, on the island of Martha's Vineyard. His parents, Grace (Emma)
Wood and William Wood Sr., were Portuguese immigrants from the Azores. His
father, William Sr., Guilherme Medeiros Silva was a crewman on a New Bedford
whaling ship from 1853 until his death in 1871. William Jr. was only 12
years old when his father died, and had to drop out of school and find a job
to provide for his mother and younger siblings. Fortunately for William
Wood, a wealthy New Bedford textile manufacturer named Andrew Pierce offered
him a job working in his Wamasutta Cotton Mill. Pierce would soon see that
hiring young William would prove to be extremely beneficial. Pierce was
impressed with Wood's work and promoted him to the manufacturing department,
where he learned cost structures and figures. At the age of eighteen, Wood
left New Bedford for Philadelphia. With the help of Andrew Pierce, William
was able to find a good job with a Philadelphia brokerage firm. This is
where he learned about stocks and bonds. After tiring of Philadelphia, he
returned to New Bedford and worked at a bank. According to the Dukes County
Intelligencer, when a Fall River textile company went bankrupt, its new
manager hired William as paymaster. Then in 1885, the Washington Mill in
Lawrence went bankrupt and was purchased by Frederick Ayer of Lowell.

Eric,, I have the the William Madison Wood article from the Wikipedia==On
the death record, he died 21 Aug, 1870, he was a laborer estimated year of
birth 1827.

On his naturalization papers, March , 1853 - he states that he arrived in
New Bedford aboard the Bark Matha on Jan 10, 1844 and had been a resident
for more than 5 years. And he now is 23 years of age.

The book Mills, Mansions, and Mergers by Edward G. Roddy has William J born
Oct 6, 1827 states various journalists that his name was Jacinto, Madeira or
Silva. The book also states the legend if Captain Henry Pease

Brought the frail, slender mariner from Pico in the 1950's aboard the
whaler Champion. Can't find where Capt. Pease was ever captain of the
Champion.

Lots of info, but a lot conflicting. I like your portuguese newspaper

A Lot has been written about his son William Madison Wood (my grandfather
was John Madison wood - the black sheep of the family I think) otherwise I'm
not sure we would have any leads.

Also, if you had Outlook Express for email, it will not work on Windows 8 -

[AZORES-Genealogy] William Jason Wood (AKA)

2012-10-01 Thread Carol Lobo
Hi all,
I have been searching for William Jason Wood for 8 years - Joao Ventura has
searched for his wife for me to no avail.

I think I may have found something, but don't know how to proceed - According
to his Naturalization (March 5, 1853))
he arrived in New Bedford aboard the Bark Martha on or about Jan 10, 1844(?)
from Fayal- His birthday is October 5, 1830.

On His marriage certificate (1855) he has the same birthday Oct 5, 1830 and
lists his parents names as Jacento and Gacia

In searching in neps, I found on Madalena the following
Antonio Rosa Garcia 1791-1848
Maria Jacinta 1791-1872

11 children one of which was named Andre born 1829.

On the Bark Martha which left new bedford on 8/3/1844 there is a Greenhand
sailor picked up on Pico Azores 8/29/1844
his name is ANT GAREIA.

All too close (I think)

I really feel that this may me him, but don't know who to tie eveything
together. All of his records are for Willialm J Wood
except the Martha's record and the marriage record.

Any help will be appreciated. Carol Lobo

His marriage papers state that his father was Janets (probably Jacento and

or Oct 6, 1827. Joao Ventura is researching my GG Grandmother in Pico -
suggested I look for a Guilherme in Faial.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] help offer

2012-08-31 Thread Carol Lobo
Hi Gayle,
According to his naturalization documents, William Jason Wood arrived in New on
or about the 10th day of January 1844, became a citizen
under the same name on the first of March, 1853 in the Justice of the Police
Court for who he worked.

His marriage certificate reads (on Nov 11, 1855) that his fathers name was
Janets (think is probably Jacento and his mothers name
was Gacia (could be Garcia). his Wife Christiana Omelin (could be Amelia)
father was John P. Ignacio.

William was from Faial and Christiana was from Pico. In the book by Roddy
titled Mills, Mansions, And Mergers, they speculate that his name
could be Jacinto, Madeira or Silva - they also state that Christiana's father
was Charles Madison and her mother was Christiana Amelia Dutra.

So you see where the name Guilherme(William) Medeiros Silva came from. The
book has several inconsistencies

He had various jobs and died on August 21, 1870, his occupation was laborer

Hope this helps

Sincerely, Carol

  Carol,

You have perplexed me without intending to do so. Your William Wood is not
listed in the two volume book on the Portuguese of Martha's Vineyard. Yet, you
said the family lived for a time in Edgartown.

I did find a Wiki article on his son William Madison Wood which seems to give
an alternate name for his father. If interested just google the son's name then
read the paragraph on his early life.

  Good luck with your search.

His witness statess that he arrived in the Fairhaven in 1844 on the ship

Tho not specific information, maybe somebody will know something.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Willialm Wood

2012-06-30 Thread Carol Lobo
Found all my info was wrong- just found copy of Marriage license from Boston
dated nov 11, 1855.
Male was William J. Wood age 25 father name JANETS mother name GACIA

Femal Christiana Omillin (think is was Amelia) age 18 father name John P.
Ignacio.

Milliam J. Wood became a citizen in County of Bristol in Ma. on March 1853
stating that he was born in Fayall in the Azores on Oct. 5, 1830.
Also states he arrived in Fairhaven in the county of Bristol on or about Jan
10, 1844.

Manuel Francis attest to knowing William as he arrived in ship Northern in the
year 1844, he was 15 years when he first arrived.

This is totally different than the infor that I got from the book by Roddy,
Mills, Mansions, and Mergers. Christiana's family is totally
wrong.

My grandfather John Madison Wood was born in Edgertown on June 22, 1859, (the
3rd child), His father listed as
Wm Wood a Laborer from Pico, W.I. - his mother was listed as Grace A. Wood
Pace of birth Pico W.I.

Also wrong info from Wikipedia about William Madison Wood, stating the father
was William Sr. AKA Guilhermie Medeiros Silva
and was a crew man on a whaling ship from 1853 until his death in 1871 -
Census states different.

I have e-mail Joao for help, have not heard from him yet - anybody who might be
researching these NEW names, please
let me know.

Thanks, Carol Lobo

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Silva from Pico

2012-05-10 Thread Carol Lobo
Hi Lynn,
It would indeed be great if that was true - I just found the name Guilherme
about 4 weeks ago and was on yahoo, until then nobody knew
his real name - so I am hoping this is true. My only hope for discovery is his
marriage to the daughter of Christiana de Luna and Carlos Matson
( of those names I am sure) They were married sometime between 1850 and 1853
inhPortugal.

I'll keep on trying -if I find anything, will let you know ---Carol

My Silva 2x's great grandparents are said to have immigrated from Pico Island
in 1860s, settling eventually in Provincetown, MA. Their original fregesia is
unknown for now. But like you, Carol, the search continues! Wouldn't it be
great if your Guilherme Silva and my Captain Joseph Silva were related and my
Joseph followed your Guilherme to America?!

Maybe these details ring a bell for you or another of our Azores Group
friends/members:

Capt. Joseph Antone Serpa Silva, born 1840 on Faial; His wife Rosa Rodriguez
was born on Pico in 1837. They married in 1864. Children: Mary, Ida, Antone,
Frank(Francis), Anna. their eldest daughter, Ida, married Capt. Manuel Caetano
(Caton) and gave her son the name of Guilherme. He was nicknamed Willy and
appears to have spent his life as a fisherman, mostly out of Provincetown, too.

Happy Mother's Day and Memories of Our Mothers Grandmothers to all ~ Lynn

Carol, do you know where on Pico (e.g., which freguesia)? I have a
friend in the Azores surnamed Silva whose father was a native of
Pico's north coast (on the channel). Katharine.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Silva from Pico

2012-04-29 Thread Carol Lobo
Trying to find where my GG grandfather was from on Pico Island -born Oct 30,
1830 name Guilherme Mederiros Silva.

Came to New Bedford, Maine on a ship in 1850 - sometime between his arrival and
1953, he returned to Pico and
took a bride to bring back to the U.S. She gave her name as Grace A Wood -
however she was the daughter
of Christiana de Luna and Carlos Matson and was named Marie.

Hope I haven't confused the search. Thanks for any help you can give me.
