Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dead end

2018-03-15 Thread Emil
Hi,

I think that the Name "Garia" is not correct. I believe it should be
Faria. If you go to
http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=capelo;lang=pt;p=francisco+pereira+de;n=faria;oc=3

it may help you to get back on the correct path. I hope.

Also as a general thought for those who do read this. I see that most
people who post assume that everyone who reads their messages understand the
abbreviations used, leave out full place names, etc. and in general lose
valuable information that people may have to help them, because of lazy
incomplete writing which most of us do. I have to keep reminding myself to
believe the person reading my message will be interested enough to reply to me,
even if it doesn't help me. Small things are important and patience is critacal.

   Just a small thought

Hello Marcio,
Congratulations to you and your wife.
I went to your blogspot and have found out that my wife connects to your family
in Sao Jorge. Maria Jose Morais born 28 Jun 1875 is her 6th cousin 4 times
removed. I don't have any newer generations that would connect you. It would be
nice to finalize the connection to you. Francisco Lopes Teixeira born abt 1585
and his wife Isabel Gregorio born abt 1590 are her 9th great-grandparents. This
is where you seem to connect.

Hi Emil,

Antonio was the ancestor that Manuel martins descends from..my ancestor was
the elder brother Manuel.

I notice that you are a Family Finder match to both myself and my Uncle John

of my Candelaria line. Perhaps we can figure out the connection. I'll look at
your gedcom again.

Greetings,

I know there are many of us with connections to Candelaria. Some of us have DNA
FF matches. I have a match with Manuel Martins and when I look we have 3 pages
of "in common with".

Manny and I figured out 1 of our connections though I believe there are more.
I'm wondering if anyone else of our "in common" also have this ancestor.

3rd great grandmother; I wonder what that makes the relationship between your
wife and I? Can’t seem to figure that out from the charts… I think we’ve
touched base before our you wife’s and my ancestors.

Unfortunately, I’ve updated to the latest FTM and not all of my documents made
it to the new program. I’m not trying to reintegrate the documents as well as
locate new ones. Luckily, I still have the info., dates, relationships, etc. It
is the actual documents and translations I am having to relocate.

The record is bottom left and top right on the page. I think the child’s name
is Catarina, Father is Bento Furtado and his wife Rosa Clara. They are natives
of Cedros and parish of St. Barbara. I think it says paternal grandparents are
Domingos Furtado and Josefa Maria (not sure of her name); Maternal Jose
Silveira de Mattos and Maria Ignacia. Birth date looks like 31 day of Dec 1822
with baptism 6 January 1823. God parents ? Francisco and maybe Mariana Silveira
and is she the daughter of Manel Silveira de Medeiros and Anna Maria??? I just
would like to see what others read and see if I’m right?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Brick Walls can Fall

2014-06-21 Thread Emil

Hi to all,

“Brick Walls can be smashed if we are patient and never give in to defeat.” I
have always believed this to be true.

My paternal grandfather and the complexity of his name has finally been
unraveled and proven. For my cousins who may be interested, he has been known
by family as FRANCISCO PEREIRA AVILA and I have spent many years communicating
with any relative or person I could find on this subject. Not to bore others on
this list I will cut to the quick. I now know that he is Francisco Luis Pereira
born 09 Dec 1855 in Nossa Senhora da Graca, Almoxarife, Faial. This is the way
he is recorded on the University of Minho web site as well as the CCA site. The
process of research coming to this conclusion now seems simple and clear, but
that would be Monday morning quarterbacking. He had a son named Jose Lopes
Vargas by his first wife, Maria do Ceu Lopes along with eight other children,
who was born in Almoxarife on 09 Jul 1884. None of Jose Lopes Vargas name
combinations using mother or father’s names produced results. Finally I
searched for only the name Jose, and found the correct matching date of birth,
from the right area. This now connected the right parents to him; Francisco
Luis Pereira and Maria do Ceu Lopes. I was still lost since his father did not
have the Avila name. I next researched the marriage record for Francisco Luis
Pereira and Maria do Ceu Lopes. It again listed his name as Francisco Luis
Pereira Junior and his father was recorded as being Francisco Luis Pereira. I
now decided to see if Jose Lopes Vargas Junior had a recorded record of
marriage. I knew that he married a Maria Laura Serpa about 1907. I did find
their recorded marriage of 26 Oct 1907 in Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, Horta,
Faial. BINGO!!! On this record of marriage it had his father now recorded as
Francisco Luis Pereira Avellar . My father and his siblings as well as his half
siblings pronounced the name “AVELAR”, but said it was spelled AVILA. Well, go
figure that one out, and I finally did!!

On our DNA site I have updated my family Tree, and those who are interested may
want to re check it out. Also, please remember to update the fact that we are
related. I have a few pending which need action.

I hope this is of value to others.

Hi Celeste,

grand aunt). Inacia's daughter Eduarda Henriques Silveira born 03 Nov 1885 is
my Paternal grandmother who had four children with Francisco Luis Pereira

and Francisco's son Manuel Henriques Silveira born 07 Jan 1903 is my father.
(Bob's Second Cousin 1x removed) My father married Rosalinda Emilia da
Conceicao Dutra on 08 Nov 1924 in Newport, RI. Sooo then I came along, Emilio
Henry Silveira born in Newport, RI. Bob and I were born the same year, but he
is older then me by two months. I am still young, don't forget to let him know.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help in reading Passport records, 1865

2015-01-15 Thread Emil

Hi Paul,

I have Rosa Emilia Coracao de Jesus my second cousin once removed born in Santa
Barbara, Cedros, Faial. She married in Santa Barbara on 02 Feb 1890 to Joao de
Brum Silveira born 30 Jan 1869 in Santa Trindade, Lajes, Pico. His father Jose
Silveira de Brum Carvao born 21 Oct 1827 married Catarina da Conceicao born 09
Dec 1835. Marriage was 01 Jan 1849 at Santa Trindade, Lajes, Pico. This
Catarina may or may not be the person your looking for. I have often found that
women recorded as “da Conceicao” in one place were recorded in other places,
most likely by a different person, as “Coracao de Jesus”. You can compare this
with your information at the following web site.

I hope this may help.

Hi all,

Below is a link for Horta passports from August of 1865. The last entry
(numbered 33) for Catharina da Conceicao is possibly my 3rd great-grandmother
who married in New Bedford, Massachusetts in December of 1865. From what I know
about this ancestor, she was from Pico, she was known as Catherine Brum or
Catarina da Conceicao, and she was born around 1835-1840. All of this is
consistent with this "Catharina da Conceicao" passport entry.

I would appreciate assistance in deciphering the village of which this
Catharina is a native. I can see that she's from Pico, concelho of Lajes, but
am unsure of what to make of the freguesia. It looks like "Silveira" to me, but
knowing that is not the name of any frequesia in Lajes I do not know if this is
an "old" name for a village or if I'm just misreading. I'm excited to find out
if this is my 3rd great-grandmother and finding out what village she's from
will definitely help in verifying this.

Thanks!

I found this article on FB. It's very interesting. Here is the link followed by
a rough translation of the text

MaryAnn

http://www.publico.pt/diversidade/jornal/a-historia-de-portugal-contada--pelos-nossos-genes-21878549

The analysis of certain portions of human DNA lets go back in time to get an
idea, geographic and temporal origin of the current Portuguese. By Ana
Gerschenfeld

the genetic recipe for cooking a modern Portuguese: warm over low heat one
"broth" of DNA Celtic, Iberian and Lusitanian the early Christian era, adding a
pinch of Jewish genes in the Middle East during the Roman Empire. From time to
time, pour in the pan some Berber genes. Wait 700 years and then mix a handful
of genes from Arab invaders for five centuries. Already in the thirteenth
century greatly increase the heat and reduce the introduction of Arab genes
(not forgetting to continue to sprinkle the mixture over Jewish genes). From
the mid-fifteenth century, lower the heat and go pouring in the broth a couple
tablespoons of gene sub-Saharan slaves. In the early sixteenth century, again
increase the fire of Inquisition for two centuries, continuing to add African
genes to the end of the nineteenth century - and never forgetting to temper
periodically over some Jewish genes (now called "Sephardi").

In broad strokes, this is the DNA manufacturing recipe of today's Portugal in
the light of the latest results of population genetics. It is at least a
possible story and was inspired by the book reading The Portuguese Genetic
Heritage (Gradiva, 2009), authored by researcher Luisa Pereira, Molecular
Pathology and Immunology Institute of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP), and
journalist Filipa Ribeiro .

One that was clearly written in the genes of the current Portuguese was the
involvement of Portugal, especially among the mid-fifteenth century and the
late eighteenth century - and to a lesser extent by the end of the nineteenth
century - in the trafficking of black African slaves. The entry of slaves in
Portugal was one of the highest in Europe - and while the other European
colonial powers such as Spain, exporting slaves to their overseas colonies,
Portugal mattered them to the metropolis. "In Portugal," write the authors of
the book mentioned above, "the unusual percentage of slaves peaked at 10
percent of the population south of the country in the mid-sixteenth century."

In 2005, the same team of IPATIMUP confirmed in the genes that history of
Portugal already had: a study published in the journal Human Biology, concluded
that there is now indeed a higher frequency of African lineages in genetic
Portuguese than in the Spanish neighbors . "Basically, Portugal retains most
sub-Saharan lineages that Spain - [and] there is historical data that Spanish
trafficked slaves especially to America", tells us Luísa Pereira.

Many results of genetic add up to history - which was to be expected. But even
then, there have been surprises. In particular, a study published in 2008 in
the American Journal of Human Genetics by an international team of scientists -
among which included John Lavinha, a geneticist at the Health Institute Ricardo
Jorge Lisbon - showed that, on average, 35 percent of men in southern Portugal
and 25 percent have North Sephardic Jews genes - and that men do Sul have 15
percent of North African descent and the North 10 percent. This means, first,
that, contrary to what was thought, the Portuguese Jews did not flee when they
were expelled by the Inquisition. They merged in the general population and
mingled to surviving this way religious intolerance. What about North African
component, something similar may have happened, although to a lesser extent,
contrary to tell us the history books. The genes of today's Portuguese witness
what really happened.

Mitochondria, Y and Cª

Today, modern genetics provides clues to follow the trail to the wanderings of
the human species - and in particular Portuguese - from its beginnings.

After all, each of the cells of our body guard, in your DNA, the history of the
generations that preceded us. The gaps are still large, but advances in DNA
sequencing techniques have allowed obtaining results that respond to many
questions.

Genetic studies of human populations migration of accumulated mainly by two
specific mutations in the human gene bits: the mitochondrial DNA and chromosome
Y. The first is a small ring of DNA that lies within structures cal

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Baptism time lapse question

2008-10-07 Thread EMIL

Hello group,

I have many relatives from Brazil in my files and have found that often times
they did not get formally baptized until a much later time after their birth.
Since there were many in the early days in my file who had been Baptized later
and even some who it appears may have only received this sacrament before
marriage. My assumption then is that because of travel restrictions and the
vast distances that had to be covered in a newly settled land, along with the
lack of a priest being available should be taken into consideration. Some of my
Brazilian relatives were baptized a few years later. This doesn’t mean they
were not Baptized. Often times in the early days the child was immediately
baptized by a family member upon delivery, then as a priest became available
the child would receive the sacrament formally in the eyes of the church. When
I was in Catholic school we were taught that any one could baptize a child if
there was a concern for the child’s well being. Then later the child could be
re- baptized properly by a priest. I hope this helps.

I can't think of a parent in that time frame not baptizing the child and
especially if they were to travel across the ocean with the child.  It does not
seem, to me, that parents took the chance with their children not getting into
heaven.  Many children died in those days and even if a child was born at home
and it was not thought the child would live, they were baptized by a lay person
(if a priest was not close by).

Hi Everyone

I have a question for the group to see if a certain scenario is plausible...

A child is born around 1894 in Santa Ana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is not
baptized at that time, but only after the family returns to Terceira about 9
months after his birth. I always thought that baptisms were usually done fairly
soon after a child's birth..

2009-02-09 Thread EMIL

Hi Sam,

Yes, to the connection to Al Rose that Pat and I have. It does come through The
Rosa side of his family.
Manuel Rosa born Feb 15, 1873 is our cousin. I do have Fraga grandparents
though. Gaspar Fraga married Isabel Melo both are from Terceira, their daughter
Maria Antonia Fraga was born in Santa Barbara, Cedros, Faial and this is my
line as well as Pat's. Maria Antonia Fraga is both Pat and my 8th great
grandmother. She married Antonio Duarte Jul 25, 1633 in Santa Barbara, Cedros,
Faial, Azores. Antonio Duarte is also Al Rose, Butch's 9th great grand father
and our (Pat and I) 8th great grandfather.

Emil and Pat; Can you tell me how your lines connect with my cousin Butch. (Al

Antonio Fraga, were siblings.

I suspect you are related to Butch thru his Rose line. I say this because, to
my knowledge, neither Butch nor I have found decendents of the other siblings
of our grandparents nor do we even know the names of the siblings of our
ggrandparents. So, if I am correct and you are related to Butch via his Rose
line (his grandmother's husband's line, I would not then be related to either
of you. Darn, cause I would really like to make more connections! :-))

All my best, Sam in CA
