[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: A Family Bible Story
E, Check search on the Internet for a book binder, book repair, book restorer type of businesses in your area. Also stop by a Used Book Store, Antique shop for recommendation to have the bible repaired. Recommend: Scan all the *birth, marriage *and *death* entries front page where it shows date and published the bible. I do this to all the old books and print the scanned pages for daily use for genealogy. Less wear and tear of the bible and it will last a long time. Also keep the bible is a cool, dry, not direct sun light area to keep it safe for your Great-Grandchild. Do not keep in the attic where the pages will dry out and fall out. Do not keep it in the basement where dampness will hurt the pages of the ancestors. Keep it proudly on a shelf in a nice room where generations can look at it and learn about the family. Glad you have the Bible, be sure to make copies for family members as Christmas gifts, might be a fun too do. [AZORES-Genealogy] San Leandro library CA helps preserve Portuguese historical newspapers
Found this newspaper news story about *Portuguese newspapers* being digitizing: A Voz Portuguesa and 13 other Portuguese-language newspapers. See below for more information. The news story mentions about the Portuguese library, J.A. Freitas Library of San Leandro, CA Eugenia * San Leandro library CA helps preserve historical newspapers By Rob Dennis The Argusmercurynews.com http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_20505399/san-leandro-library-helps-preserve-historical-newspapers Posted: 04/29/2012 12:00:00 AM PDT *Like many other California migrants, the Portuguese came for the gold. When that didn't pan out, they found something nearly as valuable: land. By 1880, more than 13,000 people of Portuguese descent had settled in California, mostly on farms in the northern part of the state. They needed news about their homeland, news about the world, news about their community scattered across the California diaspora. That news came in the form of A Voz Portuguesa, established by Antonio Maria Vicente in August 1880. That same month, San Leandro became home to the first Portuguese fraternal society in the state. Now, 132 years later, the society has teamed up with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to digitize issues of A Voz Portuguesa and 13 other Portuguese-language newspapers published in California from 1885 to 1940. The newspapers are starting to deteriorate everywhere on the edges, said Timothy Borges, CEO of the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America, pointing to a raggedy June 1885 issue of the San Francisco newspaper O Progresso Californiense in the society's collection. The reason these are so important is they're the earliest known Portuguese-language newspapers from California. Four Portuguese fraternal groups, including the original San Leandro society, merged two years ago to form the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America. The society owns and operates the J.A. Freitas Library in San Leandro, a vast collection of Portuguese books and other historical memorabilia, including the newspapers. The Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth offered to digitize the newspapers, having done the same for copies of Diario de Noticias, a daily newspaper published in New Bedford, Mass., between 1919 and 1973. Given the major role played by the Portuguese in California's agriculture, the newspapers are essential for understanding the state's history and economy, said Gloria de Sa, faculty director of the archives. They provide a treasure trove for historians, genealogists, sociologists, anthropologists and other researchers, because much of the information can't be found elsewhere, she said. In addition to local, national and international news, the papers documented social events and everyday life -- from religious festivals to wedding and birth announcements and obituaries. It's fascinating, de Sa said. You find things that you would never find in today's newspapers, like 'Mr. so-and-so just recovered from an illness that confined him to bed for two weeks.' Photos, advertisements and editorials provide a window into fashions, patterns of consumption, the cost of goods and the Portuguese perspective on major issues of the period. The San Leandro library offers a similar window. A display case contains Holy Ghost crowns, common in Azorean culture. Another holds the original minutes of the fraternal society from 1880 and the original knife (it squirted red ink) used for swearing in blood brothers. Old photos line the walls, including one of the Portuguese exhibit at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco and another of San Leandro's first Cherry Festival in 1909. Another room offers cases filled with books in Portuguese about the Azores and Portugal's history and literature, along with an English-language section. The Portuguese immigrated to the United States in phases, starting in the late 18th century. Many came to California in the mid-1800s during the Gold Rush. They didn't find money, but they found land, de Sa said. This was a new experience for them, to own acres and acres of land. More than 50 percent of California's dairy farm owners are of Portuguese descent. My grandfather at one time was one of them, and I milked a few cows myself, Borges said. Another major wave of immigration came in the last quarter of the 19th century, and another in the 1910s and 1920s, before restrictive immigration laws were passed. They (Southern and Eastern European immigrants) were considered too foreign to be absorbed into the mainstream of American society, de Sa said. During the next 40 years or so, immigration from Portugal was almost nonexistent. The doors opened again in the late 1950s after a volcanic eruption devastated the island of Faial in the Azores and again in the late 1960s after new immigration laws allowed families

Following the great discoveries (Vasco de Gama's voyage to India, 1497-1498; Pedro Alvares Cabral's discovery of Brazil, 1500; Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe, 1519-1522) The new Portuguese empire was at first ruled by men of exceptional ability and courage (Francisco de Almeida, first viceroy of the Indies, 1505; Afonso de Albuquerque, viceroy, 1507-1511) and brought in large returns. Lisbon, very soon displaced Venice, Italy, as the entrepot for Asiatic goods, and became a center of wealth and luxury. Colonial rade was a royal monopoly, and the court became a mecca for concession seekers. The old agrarian system became undermined by the introduction of black slavery, while the aristocracy to a certain extent abandoned itself to imperial war, to corruption at home and to exploitation abroad. In short, the 16 century, outwardly brilliant was already the beginning of decadence. Information is from the book: William L. [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Property on the Azores Islands
I agree with everyone's comment. I have a cousin, that asked me to research her Grandmother's land in Pico. Her Grandmother died over 7 years ago. At the time when her grandmother died my cousin got a lawyer to look into the property and was told that the property was worthless. When she asked me to look into the property a few years ago. The people named on the Title or to take care of the property were all dead. I asked a surviving sister of the brother who was one of them to take care of property about the property. She is old and could not remember. It is important to put everything in WRITING. And have in WRITING A contingent, when the person named is dead what happen to the property etc. Do not assume that the land or money is going to be there waiting for you to claim it. I have a question?? I thought a few years ago that land that was abandon for a certain amount of time that the Portuguese Government took the land and gave it or sold it. Is this true? [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: The book, AZores, Nine Islands, One History
Celeste, I have to add my opinion to this discussion. I agree what has been said. When I interview my relatives that came to America the common answer they give is, they came to America for a better life. Where they were living in Sao Jorge and Pico in the early 1900s was every poor conditions. The relatives that came to America in the 1970 came for the same reason and for their children so they could have a better future. They all heard about America being a better place to live for themselves and their children. When I did the history of my father's family that came from Norfolk, England in 1638. They came to New England, because they could own land. In England at the time, the people could not own land in their name. Only the King. Myself an older person, may have to move from California to Oregon, because the cost of living is cheaper than in California. I have been watching my families move. When they first came to America, they first settle in the late 1890s in West Oakland, California. Than each family moved to Hayward and Moraga, and than each generation after moved further East to Tracy and Gustine and than South along highway 99 to, Modesto, Turlock, Merced and now the futurist South is living in Fresno. They came to America as Dairymen and Farmers. The newer generation has graduated from College and is working with their brains instead of with their hands. The motivation that moves them is where they can find work and be able to purchase a house. The reason to move seems to be the same in each generation for better opportunities for themselves and their families. It is wonderful to be witness to our families that have grown and succeeded in what they wanted to find in America. When I have put on a family reunion and we start with a memorial pray and a pray of thank you to the first relatives that came to America. Because we are enjoying the fruits of their labor of the generation that first came to America. This is my opinion to why did our relatives came to America. They left behind the old country, their homes, jobs and families with hope and dream of a better life. He was the only one of 8 siblings to carry Victorino ( nowadays spelled Vitorino) as a middle name. On the attached record the grooms name shows as Braz Valladao. My question is, in the United States, my family dropped the Valladao and went by Braz. It was said that the Braz was adopted from another family, while the family name was always noted to be Valladao on the Islands, not Braz. Is Braz a surname or a given name in the Azores? Is there anyone else researching these names?
