Awww congratulations!

 Hi all,

Just had to share my great find while in SLC!
I have been searching for my Grandmother coming to the USA for 30 years or
more. She always said she came in through the Port of NY in Sept 1914 and
on her Alien Registration Papers she listed that her name as Maria Vieira
da Silva when she arrived. That is what I've searched for, Maria Vieira da
Silva coming on that date. Now, the Angra passports have now come online
and I thought that I would search for EVERY Maria I saw on that list from
August to the end of Sept 1914 and see what I could see because I've never
been able to find her on the dates she gave under the name she gave. So,
when I had time between teaching classes and helping the other researchers,
I searched. On Thursday, right before lunch, I found her! She came under
the surname of her mother, Azevedo!! Sure enough, it said Maria d'Azevedo,
17 years, single from Norte Grande, daughter of Francisco Vieira da Silva
and Maria d'Azevedo! I'm sure everyone in Basement 1 heard me, I was so
excited! But the moral of the story for all Portuguese researchers is,
don't give up on the search and don't believe everything your Grandparents
 said or wrote!! LOL
From this info I found her on the ship Patria and feel wonderful that I've
 finally found my Va!!

not that good of a tree. It needs to have names, dates, and places. If
the names are places are from the Azores, they should be written in proper

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Putting our research on Ancestry

2013-12-19 Thread Karen Huffman
Listers and all,

There are always pros and cons. I am on Ancestry and love it. Do I trust
everything I read? No. If I get info or clues I do my research to verify
it. I have mine out there and have seen people use it and twist it. One of
them is on this list. If they want there tree to be inaccurate, go for it.
I have errors on my on line tree and I know it. What I have on my own hard
drive is accurate. It doesn't get there without being valid. Thanks to
Ancestry my niece's mother (adopted at birth) found me. Long story but she
was given up for adoption by my sister in law and only she and my mother in
law knew where the baby went. As fate took a twist they were both murdered
(yes, murdered) and we thought the baby was gone forever. Thank God for
Ancestry!

Anyone doing their tree for themselves or others must be diligent. Check
and cross checked. I would look forward to Mendocino going forward on their
project. I have a huge branch/limb of family from the Azores that settled
there. I might get further on that line!!

On Thu, Dec 19, 2013 at 10:16 AM, Cheri Mello gfsche...@gmail.com wrote:

 Marcia said:
 1) Has anything similar happened to you?
Yes, I sent a branch to a distant relative who put the whole thing on his
personal web site. He put the whole 9 yards out there, including the
living and their birthdates. I asked him to a least take off the details
(like the birth date and place) and he just ignored me. It got copied over
and over again as the years went on. More people though knew better than
to put the details on the Internet, so more and more of that was hidden as
time went on. Also, no updates were ever made as discoveries occurred.

 2) Is your work on Ancestry?
No, it's only in my computer in my genealogy program (which has backups -
external hard drive, flash/USB drive, cloud), it's up on FTDNA, and up on
 YSearch.

 3) What pros and cons can you think of?
 For putting it on Ancestry?
Pros: If you allow your collaborators access or editing mode, many people
can be entering or correcting data. BUT, if this is something to be
published, everyone would have to be doing the data entry the SAME way.
Will everyone adhere to the standard of Mendocino County, California, or
will some enter it as Mendocino Co, California, or Mendocino County, CA, or
Mendocino Co, CA, or just Mendocino, CA? And are they all going to type
 Azores, Acores, or Açôres?

Pros: If the tree is private, just for collaboration efforts, it might
work (given my thoughts above). Ancestry takes the diacritics (accented
letters) if that is important to the lead researcher. Ancestry likes to
drop the county part. So something like, Los Angeles, California could
refer to Los Angeles (city) or Los Angeles (county).

Con: I just find Ancestry to be limiting. My genealogy program can do so
 much more.

Will this tree be deleted after you are done collaborating on it?

These are just some thoughts that popped into my head.

Dick Eastman wrote about online alternatives here: http://goo.gl/Gm76bx
He suggestions may be something to consider.

Betty, my dad is Everett Medeiros born in New Bedford, MA 1933. His dad was
Evaristo Medeiros born 1898 in Sao Miguel, Azores. In my research my dad
spoke of cousins that lived in Cambridge. He can't recall their names or
how they were related. They visited often through the 40's. I'd be
interested to see what you find, if it ties in.

Good luck!!

 Hello,

One of my husband's relatives passed last week and we attended the wake

father's cousin - with the MEDEIROS name.He said that he .still. would
love to find out if his father had siblings. And, he wanted to know where
 his grandparents came from.

They've been researching for maybe 20 yrs., and I've been helping them for
5 yrs. - as I had time.Because of the events last week, I decided to
spend some, early-morning time this week doing on-line research. .. My
memory was saying that his grandparents were Philip MEDEIROS and Maria
MIRANDA, born 1850's Portugal. And, they came over in 1889 with 4 young
children and had 4 more sons while in Cambridge.Their youngest was
Frank, b1895, and he was the father.

When I went to the archives of the Lists and Boards at www.rootsweb.comI
was reminded that those were the American names for the couple. He was
actually Felix MEDEIROS.And, I was reminded that the couple probably
married ~1872 as they had children in Azores? from 1874 to 1888.3
daughters then a son, and then 4 more sons in Cambridge, MA. They
migrated in 1889, and seemingly went right to Cambridge. I think I found
Felix coming over in May? 1889 last night.(I didn't make note of
 that, yet.)

The 1900 census had Mrs. Maria MEDEIROS as a widow and had she was living
with several of her children. So, it was assumed that Felix / Philip
died in Cambridge between 1895 and 1900.Yesterday I took a chance and
e-mailed the Cambridge City Clerk -- just asking for the year of death. We
would have driven there to find out more in person. It must have been a
quiet day as late afternoon she responded with very important information:

 Oct. 1899
 Feles DeMardeiras
 Age 50
 Born St. Michael's, Azores

I sent the information to my husband's relative last night, and they did
.. the happy dance !The couple is now getting older and starting to
have health problems, so can't research as much as they used to.

.. One note is that those 1900-1920 census records for Massachusetts had
more than several MEDEIROS couples living in Cambridge and Somerville, all
born in the Azores during the 1850's.So, it wouldn't surprise me to
find out if Felix / Philip came over with siblings and / or cousins during
 the 1880's.

Another note is that their 3 daughters all married and had married names,
JESSE, MACHADO, and SOUZA. And, 2 of the husbands were barbers.I
haven't researched those couples, yet. I can't find any information on
the next sons, Edward and Aruba. In 1900 the youngest sons were Manuel
and Frank. Last night I found out they had a son, Charles, b1893, who
might have died as a baby.

Manuel MEDEIROS moved to Stoughton, MA, married there, and at least stayed
there for a while.I don't remember if Manny and Charinda (sp?) had
children. And, my husband's relative doesn't seem to remember his Uncle
Manny. But, last night I found out he probably died in 1970 in Middlesex
Co., MA, so possibly back in Cambridge.

The youngest, Frank, married Carolina MOURA, and they had 2 sons. They
lived in Somerville and Cambridge, but both the father and one son died
young. So, the surviving son knows very little about his grandparents
 and their family.

By the way, I found one record on-line last night which showed the
grandmother's maiden name with alternate spellings of HONDIGUETA or
HOUDIGUETA.I don't know how long she lived. The relative believes
some of the family moved to Fall River, MA, and perhaps she moved there.

 Thank you for your time.

 Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(very active on Lists and Boards at www.rootsweb.com for 12 yrs.)

(By the way, the MEDEIROS List there needs a new Administrator.I
don't want to volunteer at this time.)

I don't think there's any chance of getting a recipe for the Santos,
but a news article from 1999 stated this:

a good recipe from the old country. Pia's original recipe is used. The
linguisa and morcella have never contained preservatives and are made daily
 from fresh corn- fed pork.

   The linguisa-making technique is the same as his great-grandmother's;

the pork is cut, ground and marinated before being stuffed into
natural casings and smoked with oak for 12 hours in two 8-foot- by-15-foot
 smokers.

As I remember it, medium ground red pepper, garlic, red wine vinegar
 were the main flavorings.

Seems to me some other manufacturers use black pepper, cinnamon,
allspice, oregano, sugar, red or white wine.

It seems some of the Hawaiian brands use some beef in theirs.

My opinion is that producers use pork, spice and smoke in different
amounts, so the there are more differences in between different makers,
than between regions. The size of the grind is a factor too.

Here in California, I expect it to be large chunks of pork shoulder,
garlic, paprika, vinegar, lightly smoke cured. I rate Goulart's regular the
best. Silva's , Barcelos, and Fernandes to be avoided for lack of flavor.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Question- How are last names passed down in Azorean Culture?

2013-07-09 Thread Karen Huffman
Thank you so much for all that information Tomas! I now believe my family
may not be crazy after all but have legitimate reasons for the names they
use/gave. A name is just a name unless you are trying to trace them!!

Karen Medeiros-Huffman

On Tue, Jul 9, 2013 at 2:15 AM, Tomas Leal tomasl...@comcast.net wrote:

The naming practice is just as confusing to me when I am in the Azores
among the living as it is in searching documents. I have neighbors I know
are related to each other with different family names. Some children use
the father's family name, others use the mother's.

One factor, I've learned, is the repetition of the same handful of given
names. Most women have Maria as their first given name, which means most
women have the same name. How do you distinguish one from the other? Some
use a combination of first and second names as in Maria Santo Christo or
Maria da Paz. Some go entirely by the second name. Many women named
Maria Conceição go only by Conceição. One family here of four sisters is
an example. Each one is Maria, though only the first one uses that name
(Maria da Gloria), the next two (twins) use only their second names, and
the fourth one goes back and forth between Maria Margarida and just
Margarida. In her case two different people talking about her to me might
use different names to refer to her. As for a family name, that can depend
upon whose land the family now lives on. All four of these sisters use
their family name, not their husbands' names, primarily because their
family has been a prominent one for a few generations.

In the case of my family in Faial, my grandfather's youngest sister
remained in the house to care for their mother and she remained in the
house after their mother died. Her last name was Leal, same as everyone
else in the family. She married the boy next door whose family name was
Coelho; however, she deemed rabbit an inappropriate name for a woman, so
she never changed her last name. In turn, both her sons used the name
Coelho, but she used Leal with her daughter, which she still does, long
after her marriage to Abreu (another boy next door). Maintaining the Leal
name ties her with the property and signals everyone how the property has
 passed from generation to generation.

Another complication is the repetition of the male names José, Manuel,
Jõao, António, or Carlos. The oldest son quite often gets the same first
name as his father. I have a neighbor, Manuel Paulino, whose adult son is
also Manuel. So the two could be told apart, the son uses his mother's
family name: Manuel Furtado. This is what everyone calls him. In turn, his
daughters use Paulino as their family name. Thus, their birth certificates
probably show their parents' last names as different from their own.

In the nearby town of Santo Amaro, most men and many women use two names:
António Carlos, José Manuel, Maria de Jesus, Mary Jõao, and so on. Many of
my neighbors do not even know each other's last name Reason: Many of
the 294 permanent residents have one of three dominant family names:
Morais, Neves, or Melo. Some have TWO of those names in their full names.
Here in my fourth summer, I am still trying to get the names straight, and
I frequently have to look at my notes to see who is who. It took me two
summers to determine whether it's António Carlos or Carlos António I call
for delivery of the gas cannisters. And then I had to spend another summer
getting straight whether I was to call António Carlos Melo Neves or António
Carlos Neves Melo! Finally, I have it right.

 Really, getting the names straight among the living is difficult enough;
searching through old records seems nearly impossible. But as many of us
have found out, the results are worth the effort!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] leaving the azores

2013-01-30 Thread Karen Huffman
My grandmother came to the US when she was 4. She traveled with 2 aunts and
an uncle. Her parents were already here. I wish I had asked her way back
when as to why her parents came almost a whole year ahead of her when she
was so young. They all came in through Rhode Island and settled in New
Bedford. Some stayed there for a while. Others left right away for
Mendocino County in California.

I have been working on finding my grandfather's history for about a year
now. I have pretty much found everything I can since he arrived in this
country. I have located and talked to many cousins who I didn't even know
existed. When I started this journey, I was not even sure of my
 grandmother's maiden name.

Now, I come to where I would like to learn more of my heritage. I lack
the funds to pursue any professional genealogy help, and I neither speak
nor read Portuguese. I am hoping that some here can help me find some
connection to the old country. I realize that my grandfather's name,
Manuel Silva, is like looking for John Smith in the States.

 Here is what I know:

Manuel Correia Silva, born 16 Nov 1867 at Covas, Graciosa
His immigration date was 22 Apr 1882 at the age of 15. I cannot find
arrival information. Family lore says he arrived in Boston. A passport
application says he arrived on an unnamed schooner.

His mother was Anna Joaquina, his father either Manuel or Frank, depending
on which document I look at.

He married Anna M Mendonca, also of Covas, Graciosa in 1886 in New
Bedford. She was born May 1864. Her mother is unknown, her father was
 Joseph Mendonca.

Anna arrived in 1881, I have no records except census.

Anna Mendonca had a brother Joao da C. Mendonca. He married Maria
Victorino b. 1849. They had three natural children; Laurentina b. 1887,
 Philip b. 1890, and Mary M. b. 1899.
Maria Victorino was widowed sometime before 1908. My grandfather went to
Graciosa and returned with Maria and her children that year.

The first record I have of Manuel is a New Bedford City Directory from
1883. He was single, living in a boarding house and was a hair dresser
(barber). He was a barber in New Bedford all his life. Some family
stories say he learned the trade in Graciosa.

I don't know if Manuel had any siblings.

Does any of this connect with anyone here? Thank you in advance for any
 help.

 Leonard C. Silva

Are there any Y-DNA matches between people with Azores ancestry yet?

About the SNPs, I see private ones are uncommon:

Some Y-DNA subbranch markers, SNPs (single nucleotide
 polymorphisms)http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/answers.aspx?id=21#782,
are restricted to a single family that is related in genealogical times (1
to 15 generations). These are family SNPs or private SNPs. Other SNPs are
slightly older. They represent paternal lineage groups that predate the
adoption of a family surname. These are semi-private SNPs. Both private and
 semi-private SNPs are uncommon.

But I suppose a match certainly doesn't have to be from a private SNP.
I'm still trying to get a handle on this...

Are there any others who have this:
 *R1b1a2*Shorthand: *R-M269*

Nancy Jean already told me E1b1b2a is for Morocco and Berbers I don't
know the shorthand way to call it.
My R-M269 is apparently for most of Western Europe.

Looking at the graph that lists types A through S, it seems that the
closer you get to A, that's the mythical Adam or ground zero, so the E for
Berbers are more genetically close to Adam than are letters R, S and T.
( just noticed that T comes before S for some reason - a genetic anomaly?
 :-)

And so my R seems to be one of the most distant or changed/altered DNA
 from the original Adam.

Does it seem I have that straight?

 Hi Rick,

OK, I didn't know what I was looking for and just happened upon the
badge and that lead me to the answer.

 They say:
 Your predicted Haplogroup: *R1b1a2*Shorthand: *R-M269*

There are options to order SNPs for $29 each. I wonder what that's about.
I'm sure it's a complicated answer, but if you know a way to simplify it, I
bet there are others on this list would also like to know.

 Thanks,

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestory.com...My relative but wrong information posted by someone else!! What do I do?

2012-11-15 Thread Karen Huffman
Everyone has great comments on this problem. I have had someone contact me
to say we were related and she was very excited. I was knew and trusted.
After reviewing more I saw she had connected my info into her tree. I don't
mind. However, I know my great grandfather did not start having kids at the
age of 9. I contacted her but she swears we are related. I deleted her info
from my tree but I am still in hers. I feel sorry for anyone thinking they
have a hit. I do take the hints and post them to my tree. It may take me
more than a month to get back and verify the info. Meanwhile it may look
like I am trusting it. I just haven't verified it yet. I always reply to
any comments or concerns on my tree. If it was private I would miss all the
input that could help me on a breakthrough. You have to learn to not rely
on others but to always verify once, twice.

My gr grandfather was born on All Saints Day so he got the last name of

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Find a Grave

2012-06-16 Thread Karen Huffman
I too take photos for find a grave. Like Cheri says it does irk a little to
take your own time and gas just to find someone already took the photo.
Cheri I am so glad to know you care about the pix you take. I try and clean
or trim the site before I take the shot. Occasionally i take flowers too. I
have found quite a few relatives in find a grave. I am so thrilled they
will not be forgotten! Cheri i don't know how you do all that you do.
Thank you!

 - Shirl -

 Gail,

There is nothing more annoying to volunteers than to go and take a photo
just to find out the person requesting asked the world and someone else did
it and wasted the volunteer's time. Even though I take pictures in larger
city cemeteries, some are old. Some are so large that the flat memorial
tablets are trimmed once every X months. So I sit and trim away the grass.
If there's mud (from the lawn being watered), I pull out my collapsible
bucket and find a spigot and wash it off. Then I let it dry. If the light
is not right, I pull out my umbrella and shade the stone the right way.

In fairness to the Find A Grave volunteers, you should take down your
photo request there and wait and see if anyone on this list picks up the
request or any other you list you may have posted it on. Find A Grave
gives the volunteer 2 weeks to fulfill the request after it has been
claimed. So you could wait 2 weeks after this posting to see if anyone
fills it. And once someone agrees to take your picture, you need to tell
every list you posted on that the request has been fulfilled so some other
volunteer does not go out there to take your photo.

Sorry if this doesn't sound polite. I've been doing the grave photos for
a few years now on Find A Grave and have encountered a few people who
didn't take down the request and I used my gas, time, and energy just to
find out that the request was fulfilled by someone else. Hope you
 understand.

Mar 1969. Gertrudes was also my gr grandmother's sister. Manuel and
Gertrudes lived in Mendocino and I think Fort Bragg. We visited them when I
was pretty young. Gertrudes and Maria's (my gr grandmother) parents
were: *Jose da Costa* and *Emilia Augusta*. There other children were:
*Virginia,

The above is my dad's maternal side.

I found most of this side myself with just a little help from Joao Ventura.
Joao is helping with my dad's paternal side = the mystery people!

We discovered my grandfather Evaristo, was not born a Medeiros but a Roque.
His father was Antonio Rodrigues Roque and his mother was Amelia Ernistina.
Antonio's father was Jose Rodrigues Roque. Without Joao's help I would
still be stuck looking for Medeiros! Amelia Ernestina's father was Antonio

For those who are newer to Portuguese genealogy, you have many more
resources now that those of us who started 20 years ago. Twenty years ago,
it took me 4 years and 25 documents to find the freguesia (village) on Sao
Miguel. All letter writing and phone calls. No databases on the Internet
 to help.

The 25th document I asked for was from St. John the Baptist in New
Bedford. I had my dad go to the Riverside County (California) courts and
get his grandma's naturalization paperwork (24th document). I had him ask
for any and all paperwork and I got the forms that they had to fill out
for the 1st and 2nd papers (the process that an immigrant had to go through
at the time to become a citizen). On the paperwork, she stated that she
married in New Bedford, Connecticut. I double checked to be sure, and
found there was no New Bedford in Connecticut. Then I got a phone book
from New Bedford, Mass (probably a photocopy of the yellow pages for
Catholic churches) and I got up early one morning in June and started
calling all of them. I asked if they were around in 1905 (I did have their
marriage date). The 2nd church said yes and put me on hold. The priest
went and pulled the marriage book from 1905 and said that they were married
there. He said he would make me a certificate and mail it to me, but I
said I would be in New Bedford in 2 weeks and I would pick it up. (I was
going to Sao Miguel to search all 70 freguesias for my immigrant
ancestors. I was getting pretty desperate!)

When I got to St. John the Baptist, the priest gave me the little half
sheet that said he married her, by the priest on the date and the witnesses
were A B. I had heard a lecture (probably Rosemarie Capodicci) that said
that the Catholic church marriage may have more info in it. So I started
pestering the priest (nicely). I asked why he had a surname on the bride.
He pulled the book and said that the book did not have her surname on it,
he just typed that in because when I called I asked for the marriage of
Manuel Mello and Gloria Correia (although he typed Maria da Gloria Correia
on the certificate, the book only said Maria da Gloria). So I'm NOT
getting an exact copy of what was in that book. He tries to put away the
book and I ask if the relationship of the witnesses were mentioned. He
looks and says no. Then the phone rings and he answered it. So I'm trying
to read the big marriage book, upside down and it's in Latin (it was fill
in the blank, so you could kind of tell what's a name and what's not). The
priest is getting exasperated with me and closes the book so I can't read
it and invade the privacy of my ancestors (WHAT?!?!?!? They're dead, how
can I invade their privacy???) After he hung up the phone, I start in with
another question. He looks at me and told me that he can read me what it
says, but my eyes aren't allowed to see the book. He said it was in Latin,
so he was translating. Manuel de Mello, a native of Ribeira das
Tainhas There it was. What I had been looking for. I didn't know
whether to kick the priest in the shins or to kiss him (I opted for
neither; I just profusely thanked him and gave him a donation for the
church). I wrote the notes on the back of the certificate. A year or 2
later, I befriended another priest who was assigned there for a couple of
years who did genealogy. The dispensation for their marriage was in the
side margin in that book and the original priest didn't bother to tell me
 that.

Mike, because your 1897 marriage is about 8 years before my marriage date
at the same church, there is a chance that the format may be the same.
They may have your freguesia. St John the Baptist is in the processes of
closing. I don't know if they are still an active parish or not. Or if
they are packing up their books. The address is 344 County Street, New
 Bedford, MA 02740-4895, phone: 508-992-7727.

Ask (real nicely) whoever answers the phone if they will make a photocopy
of the marriage book. If they say no, ask if they will type up exactly
what it says in the marriage book (even if it's in Latin), as you need the
village your ancestors were from. Tell them you are making a donation to
their church (and please do it so they continue to do look ups for the rest
 of us genealogists).

 Good luck,

I recommend starting with the folks you know and finding a birth
record. The records for Gracios are not yet available on line. If
you are having trouble, contact Joao Ventura--reasonably priced and
very quick. I was able to add three generations of my family with the
information he was able to find on birth records. The birth records
he found for my da Silva boys (born 1892) included parents names and
 both paternal and maternal grandparents.

Joao advised me that women didn't typically receive last names during
this time period. They had a first name and a middle name with
religious significance. It is likely that Margarida is a middle name
only. If you find your gr grandfather's birth certificate, you will
 likely find Augusta's parents names.

I just got awesome information from Joao Ventura and now have info on my
grandfather back to my gr gr gr grandparents!!! The name my grandfather
used to come over with and used is different than the name he was born
with. He is naturalized as Evaristo Rodrigues Medeiros. That is also on his
death certificate. However Joao did some research. His birth and baptism in
Sao Pedro, Ponta Delgada he is Evaristo Rodrigues ROQUE!!

I want to upload my GEDCOM but I don't want to use my Ancestry.com tree.
That tree has other families tied into it. Lots of people not needed for
this tree. I also have Family Tree Maker. I did not share the info from
Ancestry to this tree. Will it be enough information if I just input the
parents, grandparents and so forth without putting in siblings and more
current/living people? I am curious as to how many people are needed in
your tree to be able to tie in with other people?

Another question I have is do I leave my grandfather in my tree with the
name we knew him as or the one he was born with? All U.S. documents are
with the name we knew. Does it make sense to just switch it at my gr
grandfather? His name is Antonio Rodrigues Roque. His father is Jose
Rodrigues Roque. Then it switches to just Roque Rodrigues.

 Thanks for reading and replying!

  Karen,

Ancestry.com http://ancestry.com/ allows for alternative names. You
just need to decide on the primary one to show in the tree. My
grandfather's name is William da Silva Vasconcellos in Graciosa. When he
arrived Silva became everyone's middle name. My grandfather then married a
Silva and changed last name to Sylvia (his mother did not approve of the
marriage). She passed away and he married my grandmother (Bettencourt) and
changed his name back to Vasconcellos. Of course, I've also seen
Vasconcelos (one L). So, I have all names in ancestry with the primary
being the name he had in the US for most of his life.

Just go to the detail view for the person and click the little icon to the
right of the name. Oh, it doesn't show up in FTM or the iPhone app, but
 it's there!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] who's baby

2012-04-22 Thread Karen Huffman
Another perspective on the plots/graves...My 1st husband died at 25. We had
a 3 year old and I was pregnant with our 2nd. I had every intention of
being buried with him when the time came. 20 years laterI was remarried
and had another child. My 1st husband's family asked me if they could use
the plot/grave because his aunt had died and they didn't have the money to
bury her in the nicer section. I was torn as to what to do. Being a good
catholic the guilt of any decision was eating me. I gave the family the
plot. Still makes me feel funny all these years later. His aunt is buried
with him but it still causes my heart sadness.

Don't look at it as what the heck were they thinking because some things
are done with a heavy heart. Unless you are there in the circumstances, you
just don't know.

On Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 10:59 AM, celeste perry ccgran...@yahoo.com wrote:

During the years I extracted the information from books (14 of them) for
the first Catholic cemetery in Hayward, I ran into a lot of things that did
not make sense to me. One was that in some cases families were able to
purchase a plot with one to several graves. I have seen copies of the
deed to the plots and the graves are listed. That was in one set of
 books.

Another set of books was the plot books. I think there were 4 of these
books. The plots were listed in the order they were sold and the people
buried in the plots were listed as to the grave number or in the SW
corner, etc. of the plot. The cemetery was begun in 1875 (I believe) and
still continues to have burials; however, not very many of them.

The reason I am trying to explaine the possible burial sites of those
enterred in this cemetery is very different due to several factors. Each
priest that was at All Saint may have different ideas as to who could and
who could not be buried in a purchased plot. While I was working for 4
years on this extraction, I met many people who were looking for their
families and they shared their oral history with me about the burial of
 their families.

In several cases, the names of those buried in a plot did not match the
person who had purchased the plot. I was told that it was a neighbor who
died and could not afford to purchase a grave. There were also graves
purchased by Portuguese Fraternal Societies to bury their members that did
not have the means to purchase a grave. There were a large number of
infants buried in 1918 (I suspect it was the flu epidemic) and in the cases
where addresses were given for the deceased, whole neighborhoods lost many
children and elderly people. Again, several were buried in places where
the names of the owner of the plot was different from those being buried.

I am sharing some possible reasons that the plot you think will contain
your ancestor may or may not have others with different names buried with
them. The oral histories shared with me told of many reasons; some were
godchildren; some were neighbors; some said the priest asked the family to
bury the person and my personal account of an uncle who died at the age of
3 months and was buried with the lady who was being buried that day.

This oral history was from my grandmother (the baby's mother) and she told
me several times that because she did not have the $5.00 in 1917, he was
buried with this person she did not even know! She never forgot that her
son was with a stranger and that it was the priest's fault. An
interesting point for this burial is that they were buried in what was
called the poor ground for those who could not affort to pay for a
grave. In my grandmother's opinion, her son did not get the chance to have
 his own grave.

When I run into something like a person being buried with people I don't
recognize, I try to look at it in other ways and not only that the person
 is a relative.

 Michael,

I have in my family an Uncle and nephew buried in the same plot in Benicia
CA. The child, my Mom's brother, died when they lived in Benicia(1920's).
The family then moved to Monterey. My Mom's uncle then died in Benicia

his family. Therefore we have an uncle and a nephew buried together, both
named Souza, in the same plot.

I don't know why the expostos fascinate me so much. Perhaps it was just

[AZORES-Genealogy] Conference tomorrow in San Jose w/Joao Ventura

2012-04-21 Thread Karen Huffman
I am not sure who to direct this to. At this moment in time I am not sure
if I will be able to make it tomorrow. I have looked forward to this and
been so excited to go and meet you all and learn some new things from Joao
for months. Some may not understand and think it is pretty lame but I have
a golden retriever that should have delivered puppies on Wednesday or
Thursday and still hasn't. She's uncomfortable and been panting for over a
day now and restless. If she doesn't deliver tonight I may be at the vets
tomorrow. I know it is just a dog but she already has puppies spoken for
and anyway we love her to pieces. I hope the scarf ladies can forgive me IF
I don't make it. Fingers crossedand toes!!

Karen :)

(I was also hoping to hire Joao to hunt for some records for me. YES
disappointed does not cover how I feel.)

Thank you for the reply Rosemarie. I had wanted to meet you too!! I saw
through DNA we are related...distantly. Sooner or later I will get more
info and be able to tie my roots to someone that connects us! It is a shame
that the machine didn't work. He came so far for it not to be in working
order is mind boggling! I hope you all had a good time anyway!!

No puppies yet. :( Vet said not to worry until tomorrow.

They did not have the machine working right for him to use his examples so

was very dissapointing expecially for the beginers that were there. They
had no way of seeing the documents! Joao, of course, is always full of

that the AV Dept. couldn't get the machine to connect.

 Karen,

From the mid-1800s through these records (1910/1911), the baptism date is
on top and the birth is buried (before the mid-1800s, the birth will appear
 first).

Birth is nasceu. Look 4 lines down in your baptism and find the name
 Manuel.

.Manuel e que nasceu nesta fregue-
zia as seis horas da noite de trinta e um de findo(?) mez e Outubro e anno
dito de mil oito centos noventa e dois

I did that line by line for you. The priest does run some words together
though (doesn't always pick up his pen).

... Manuel and that he was born in this fregue-
sia at 6 hours of the night of 30 and 1 of (?) the month of October and
 year
 same 1000 800 90 and 2...

You can look at the 3 other Marias on that page and about 4 or 5 lines
down see the name of the baby followed by nasceu. Soon you'll be used to
 that word too.

Sometimes the priests will write that the baby was born in the same month
and year (something like dito mes/mez e anno) or they say of the current
month and year (something like corrente mez/mes e anno). The native
speakers will correct my Portuguese writing and spelling. But current sort
of looks like corrente. Kind of close to our English word. I did the word
month as mes or mez, depending on the priest's spelling and the time period.

I am getting better at this already! This is my gr grandmother's brother.
I found the record myself!! Yipp! I can read the 20th day of November
1892 church of Sao Mateus do Calheta, Angra do Heroismo, Father is Jose
daCosta mother is Emilia Augusta residing in Canada do Biscoitiho. Joaquim
daCosta and Luiza Candida are paternal grandparents and Jose Periera Gil
and Theodora Joaquina are maternal grandparents.

How can Jose Periera Gil also be a godparent? Anna deJesus is godmother.
Can you tell me if it shows Manoel's birthdate? Please tell me what I have
missed or gotten wrong. I appreciate any assistance.

I went through 1890, 1891 and 1892 looking for siblings. Siblings are:
Virgina, Matthew, Victorina, Amelia and Maria. My eyes must be getting

 Thank you!! Karen :)

 Hi Karen,

I think the number words are the hardest part to learn. Just helping
people in Salt Lake City, we found that last thing to figure out are the
 numbers.

Yes, the year in 1890 and it is November.
 Top line:
Aos = it's a contraction for On the
deseseis is 16 (10 and 6 and you saw the 10 part). This is the baptism
 date.

 Line 6:
manha de nove de corrente mez de Novembro

morning of 9 of the current month of November.

 Six lines from the bottom:
Foi padrinho Matheus Pereira Gil, cazado, maritimo, e ma-
drinha Francisca da Gloria, cazado, de profissao domestica ...

Foi is past tense for it was (or the Godfather was) but I just say:
For godfather, Mateus Pereira Gil, married, maritime, and god-
mother Franisca da Gloria, married, of the profession domestic (which
 means housewife)

Note: It doesn't state that the godparents are married to each other, so
 don't assume that they are.

 Keep on rolling,

I've got a different Syprianno in my family tree. I'm not sure of the

[AZORES-Genealogy] Rodrigues-Medeiros maybe Cabral from Sao Pedro Ponta Delgada

2012-04-18 Thread Karen Huffman
My grandfather was Evaristo Rodrigues Medeiros born 22 Nov 1898 in Sao
Pedro, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. His father was Antonio Rodrigues Medeiros
and his mother was Emily Cabral. Supposedly they were well to do. They had
land and housekeepers. After Emily died Antonio married the housekeeper's
daughter which caused a scandal. I have a picture of Antonio and Emily's
family. They had 8 children. We only know of Alfredo who went to Brazil,
Georgina born 22 Oct 1890, Gaudino born about 1895 and married Amelia.
(Gaudino and Amelia's 3 daughters and 1 son went to Canada. 1 son Humberto
is still in Sao Miguel). Alberto was born about 1900 and married Virginia.
We know 2 more brothers Antonio and Tiago. Tiago was killed in the
Portuguese Army when he was about 22. I tried writing Humberto in
Portuguese and English with no response. Do any of these people sound
familiar? I would love information on them!!

My gr grandfather was born 1 Nov 1885 on Graciosa. He was native and

his mother was Augusta Margarida. I have no dates or villages for them.
Does anyone have daSilva's on Graciosa that may tie into mine? I am
wondering if Margarida is a middle name or her sur name. I don't find any
reference to a sur name for her. I want to locate birth, baptism records.
What should I start with? Suggestions?

He married my gr grandmother Maria da Conceicao who was from Terceira.
Don't know which Island they would have been married on or how they met.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Interesting story with recipes.

2011-02-14 Thread Karen Huffman
Jacki,
Those are the only items I have ever heard talked about in my family. Kale
Soup, Sopas and the Portuguese Sweet Bread I would really appreciate the
recipes for. I would love to try and make them. The only dish I make is
Popage/Paupage. My grandmother taught me to make it. It is a hot breakfast
type pudding. My grandmother made it for me even in her 80's with bursitis
in her shoulder. (It has a lot of stirring) I make it now on holidays for my
dad and kids.

My e-mail is karen.huffl...@gmail.com
(I hope I am on the right thread and it is appropriate) (let me know)

Kale soup is one of my most favorite out of all the wonderful things my

the sweet bread. I make it every year at Christmas and Easter. The Sopas
that is traditionally served at the Holy Ghost celebrations is also another
 favorite that I enjoy making.

I think food is a wonderful way to stay in touch with our history. I try
hard to keep the traditions going. Not just for my Portuguese side but I
have to say that's the food I enjoy the most. As the generations continue,
the blood gets thinner and thinner but if the love of the food can keep the

About 3 weeks ago, a new member joined our list - Altino Demelo. An
amusing name, I thought, since I had a photo of a man in a soldier's uniform
named Altino de Melo. Altino, the man posting his genealogy question, was
asking about finding some certificates for his mom's side in Ginetes. I
responded how he could obtain them.

He wrote me back in private, thanking me for my answer. In the 2nd
paragraph, he wrote that he would also like to work on his Melo line, from
Ribeira das Tainhas and Ribeira Quente! WHAT?!?!?!?! HEOO, that's
in my signature line. Those are the freguesias I research in!!!

The photo that I have of Altino de Melo is an army photo, probably from the
1940s. My dad was in the army in the early 50s and this photo of Altino
looked older, so I guessed it to be the 1940s and that subject of the
picture was probably born in the 1920s. This photo was in my
great-grandmother's album. On the back, in Portuguese, it said something
along the lines of In love and friendship. I wish to know my uncle, aunt,
and cousins better. Altino de Melo, A.D., A.D.

This photo was shared with me in the 1990s. He had to be a son of one of
my grandfather's brothers. According to Sister Hilda Correia, a cousin,
both of my great-grandfathers sisters who lived to adulthood came to West
Warwick, Rhode Island, one sister died young (found out later that wasn't
true), and out of the remaining two brothers, one went to Canada and one
went to Brazil. Because the back of the photo was written in Portuguese, I
figured it was from the brother who went to Brazil. (One thing about family
stories - there's usually a grain of truth. A brother, not a sister, died
young (age 5), and the DESCENDANTS of one of the brothers went to Brazil and
 Canada).

Back then, I showed the photo around, trying to get some identification on
the uniform. No luck. I took it with me on one trip to the Azores. I was
taken into Vila Franca and up to a house. They knocked on the door, told me
the man was Altino de Melo. He looked at the photo and said it was not
him. He was an older man, but not quite old enough. Rats.

I think it was my 2002 trip. I went to the archives, knowing that I could
see the books up to 1900. I searched Ribeira das Tainhas, looking for every
Mello, writing them all down. I found the baptism of the sister who I was
told had died young - she hadn't. Her margin had her marriage and death
info. She died on Terceira. I kept looking for more siblings. In the 1900
book, I found the birth of my great-grandfather's youngest sibling,
Antonio. Antonio was only 3 when his big brother left for America. He
never really got to know him. My great-grandfather never went back for a
 visit sadly.

Antonio's baptism also had his marriage and death info in the margin. He
had married a woman by the name of Senhorinha. And he died only in 1990, in
 Nordeste.

Nordeste. The name literally translates to northeast. It's on the
northeast corner of the island. I am told that one day I must go there and
get up before dawn to see the sunrise, as it is absolutely beautiful. Guess
I should put that on my to do list. However, I'm not a morning person, but
 perhaps I will one day.

I don't remember if it was that same trip or the next one. But I took that
information from Antonio de Melo's baptism and was going to try to find his
descendants. He died in 1990. That was a little over 10 years ago then. So
I take my family group sheet and go to the praça where the taxis are. I ask
for an English speaking driver. I ask him to take me to Nordeste to find my
family. Ah, Senhora, you must come back tomorrow, before dawn. I will
take you to Nordeste. The sunrise is very beautiful. Come back tomorrow.
On to the next praça and the next taxi stand. I ask for an English speaking
driver. I get the same story about Nordeste. I told him I had been before,
but wanted to find my family, but he insisted that I see the sunrise. So I
walked over to the mall to those taxis. I found a driver, in his 20s. He
spoke English. I asked him to take me to Nordeste. He starts in about the
sunrise thing. ARGH!! I want to scream! I pull out my family group sheet
and show it to him. I point to Antonio's name and his death date. I told
him I wanted to find my family.

He looks it over. He asks if I know how common the name Antonio de Melo
is. I said, yes, I knew. But I pointed out his wife's name, Senhorinha. I
said that was less common. He agreed, and said he would help me. We agreed
on a price and off to Nordeste we went.

I think it was a Sunday. I think there was a festa that was going to start
up later that day. The taxi driver said that would be good as there would

doing family research on relatives who moved to CA in the 1920's. This man,
who also has done research on his family with the same surname, knew this
wasn't his family. He went on to trace down my Mother and sent the letter
and picture on to her with a note I think this belongs to you. My Mother
is now in her 80's and how he located her since her name has changed more
than twice is in itself a story of a dedicated good Samaritan researcher.

My Mother phoned Joyce (76), in TX. They shared stories and my Mother told
her how interested I am in genealogy, that I have been trying to do research
and that I had hit a wall and couldn't go any further than my Grt.
 Grandfather. They all just disappeared.

As it turns out, my newfound cousin, Joyce, has been doing research for the
passed 30 some years. Her and another cousin would take one or two week
vacations and go back in history to where ever they needed to go. They
researched, and *documented* every town record, bible, storyteller,
library, school record, deeds, wills and compiled a book beginning in 1702
forward. Our family was the missing link to one of the 11 children in the
picture. I was so happy to send her all the info and docs that I have
 collected to complete her work.

Even more. It seems that one of the 11 children's wife, didn't like
the her inlaws and when Grt. Grandma died, this she set fire and was
burning all the family pictures and china when the other family members
drove up to the old home after the funeral.

I sent Joyce what few family pictures I had. Joyce sent copies on to her
cousins (e-mail is so great). She wrote back and shared that all the
cousins haven't come down to earth yet as they are so thrilled with pictures
that they thought were lost forever. Four of the pictures that I sent were
of Joyce's Father that she had never seen before.

And yes, she is sending me a copy of her book: )

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] About my absence--my Dad passed away

2010-05-12 Thread Karen Huffman
Very sorry to hear about your father. It is tough watching our parents age
and then switching roles. Sounds like you did it well and gave him the
chance to lean on you. He was very blessed to have you as you were blessed
to help him through this. Take your time getting your head back. It is a lot
to process. We all need our own time and our own way to muddle through.

God Bless and Heal,

he had had ups and downs over the last year with breathing problems,
it was completely unexpected. He went into the hospital for his

was about to be released, then the next day he began showing different
symptoms. It turned out that his colon was bad. He died 3 days after
 emergency surgery.

My Dad and I were very close. When I couldn't work anymore he allowed
me to live in his house without question. As he aged, I began taking
over control of the household and then his medical needs. When he
 was
put on oxygen last year, I helped him learn the equipment and
remembered the things that were too much for him to deal with.

I am not with the program right now. I am sort of checking the group
and the IslandRoutes (Portuguese Hawaiian google group). Cheri is

I appreciate everyone's patience as I slowly get back into the swing
 of things.

 Thanks!

E Elaine- it does me good to hear stories like that! I am disappointed
along with you that you didn't find more info but so excited for what you
did get - to walk in the footsteps! What a trek :) Next year I will be
making the trip to Sao Miguel with my dad, sisters, brother, 2 uncles, my
aunt and 2 cousins. We are just waiting to work out the logistics for
everyone. I hope we can figure out where our previous footsteps had been
first!

I read this article with much interest to see if she might have give

Thank you so much for the info. I can't wait to get my toe in the door and

reply when they are ready. Do you know anything about his family in Sao

that was a lawsuit waiting to happen. He said no, they don't sue for

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Cabral, Costa, Silva, Medieros of S. Miguel and Santos Costa on Terceira

2009-04-22 Thread Karen Huffman
I am so excited that somebody would have anything that might remotely be
connected Antonio R R Medeiros was my great grandfather. I do not have
dates or place of birth on him. He married Emily Cabral. I know nothing of
her other than she died young or fairly young of cancer. They had 8 kids (we
think) and were well off. They owned properties and had maids. My
grandfather (their son) was Evaristo, names I know are: Albert and Georgina.
Evaristo and Georgina came to the states in their 20's. A distant
newly found cousin said they weren't really Medeiros' that they were
Roque's. My dad never heard anything like that so we are stumped. After
Emily died Antonio remarried the daughter of one of their maids and
disgraced the family. Supposedly they had a son together and named him Roque
Antonio Roque.

Anything sound vaguely familiar? Any direction would be awesome!

Repost for Karen khufflady at charter dot net:

I wish I was to the point where I was confident enough to post something.
 I
just don't have much to go on yet. I'm hoping to get a response from a
relative that can at least give me some dates and villages. I just have a
couple of surnames so far to follow. Cabral, Costa, Silva, still not sure
 on
the story with my own surname of Medeiros. That is only 2 generations ago.
All I have gathered so far is my grandfather (Evaristo Rodrigues Medeiros)
arrived in Boston on Feb 15, 1921 aboard the Caponic he was 22. He traveled
alone. He lists his dad as Antonio RR Medeiros of Sao Miguel. My
 grandmother
Mary Santos arrived here September 12, 1912 aboard the Madonna when she was
 5. The manifest lists her as Costa. She was traveling with her aunt and
uncle Matthew and Gertrudes Costa. She was born on Terceira. She met and
married my grandfather on October 25, 1924 in New Bedford at Mount Carmel
Church. I can trace them through the end of their lives no problem. My
problem is before they came here. Relatives before them only a few clues.
 My
dad isn't even sure. Until I get more that is the reason I am quiet. Like
the others I read everything hoping I might be able to use something or
recognize something. I didn't want anyone to get annoyed with me chatting
 on
trivial info. I enjoy reading others accomplishments and snags. I don't
 feel
 so alone!!
