[AZORES-Genealogy] FTDNA Results

2017-10-14 Thread Mike

Y results that were there in June and I was trying to learn what they mean
are now gone. has this happened to anyone else?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Ancestry

2018-11-11 Thread Mike
I use Ancestry mostly to a place for digital info in case I lose hdd.
Does anyone else use Ancestry and did the places you list for births or
anything else get changed by them? I’ve all of a sudden had countries like
Senegal, Mexico listed for certain persons where entered say do Salao for my
gggrandmother and not it says Senegal.

[AZORES-Genealogy] my GGgrandfather

2019-03-18 Thread Mike
It has taken almost 4 years, but with some help from a couple of people I
finally know for sure what village, correct BD, his parents and
grandparents. his siblings Antonio S Pereira is from Cedros, Faial. What
finally helped was finding his last will attached to the title abstract of
my grandmothers house, he listed a sister I didn't know about.
Her name was the last clue needed.

[AZORES-Genealogy] leaving the azores

2013-01-30 Thread Mike
When it comes to women leaving the Azores to come to the USA, is there any
typical situation that would bring them over? coming with parents? coming
with husband? would they have traveled over with an older or younger
brother? Would she have traveled over alone if another family member
already here?
I'm trying to find a clue to connect my great aunt Francisca to my great
grandfather Jose to maybe narrow down some of the search results for
traveling into the USA

[AZORES-Genealogy] the myheritage site

2013-02-02 Thread Mike
Well when the email was sent out announcing the deal between FTDNA and the
myheritage website I decided to poke around a little. the site offered up a
number of what they call smart matches, one of them was to a man named
HELDER OLIVEIRA. apparently we share our 2nd great grandmother Luisa Emilia
da Silveira.
I sent him a message so we can compare notes and we'll go from there.
I've seen his name all over what was called the Neps site does that mean
he's the one who did all that research and uploading to the site? or are
they all his family?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: New Bedford St John's Cemetery Lookup Needed

2013-04-15 Thread Mike

There are four operating cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the City of
New Bedford, they are:

All the cemeteries have been brought into one office holding all the
records, the older cemeteries have no more plots to sell. so try writing to
the address listed below

   1. Rural Cemetery -- 149 Dartmouth Street
   2. Oak Grove Cemetery -- 185 Parker Street
   3. Pine Grove Cemetery -- 1100 Ashley Blvd
   4. Peckham West Cemetery -- Mt. Pleasant Street*

There are also several cemeteries/and or buriel grounds under our
jurisdiction that are closed, however, they are still maintained by our
department personnel, they are:

   1. Griffin Street Cemetery
   2. Point Road Cemetery
   3. Tobey Family Burying Ground
   4. Reynolds Family (Braley Road) Cemetery
   5. Congregational Church Cemetery
   6. Friends Cemetery

Please note that records of all buriels under our jurisdiction are
maintained in our Main Office of the Cemetery Board at 149 Dartmouth Street

I just find this all very fascinating, when I learn anything new, I'm very
lucky and very grateful to everyone in this group who has helped with
finding and verifying any piece of information for my search, I haven't
posted recently because I've had my nose stuck to the copies of handwritten
notes the priests made when the birth and baptism of a known person trying,
but not having much luck being able to read any of it unless it is very
clear.
Doug has been extremely helpful and answers every question I ask even if
it's just a basic simple question, I have to agree the new browser is
great, I have been able to compare to the matches and members of people I
match and am slowly seeing all the conections.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Cemetery burial of a baby

there are 2 infants buried on the edges of a 6 grave burial plot that my
great great grandparents and son along with a family member from Doug da

relation but said it was not uncommon for a close friend or neighbor to
offer a place of rest in their family plot. In this same plot there is a
man buried on top of the 1st person buried there.

[AZORES-Genealogy] passenger list

2013-10-02 Thread Mike
There are 2 clues that I can find on both family search and ancestry in the
1910 census in rhode island there is 16 year old boy listed as a servent.
He bears the same name that is my great grandfathers of Joseph Pine. Now
the age is just about spot on when I compare it to the WWI draft
registration and marriage cert to my grt grandma. to search for him coming
over would the family he worked for have traveled to the Azores to bring
someone back? Or would he have arrived with someone else and ended up
working there?
I'm hoping to be able to use the name he worked for to see if I can trace
it back to where he came from. I suppose that New Bedford wasn't all that
far from RI to strike out and make it big on his own when he got older.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: PACHECO in New England, 1900-1920

2013-11-02 Thread Mike
Hi Betty,
there is a Joao J. Pacheco buried in a family plot for my GGrandparents and
son in what was called St. John the Baptist cemetery. This Joao J. Pacheco
died and was buried in November 1918 in S. Dartmouth, Ma, the information
has him listed at 90yrs of age. He is no relation to my family or to Doug
da Rocha Holmes who has a relative buried in plot #1 of this 6 plot site.
Maybe someone will recognize his name.

[AZORES-Genealogy] where to next

2013-11-05 Thread Mike
I've been trying to find my GGgrandfathers naturalization paperwork without
much luck, I'm hoping that there would be more specific info just to make
certain who I think he is, is really him.
In an interview in the Standard Times in New Bedford, Ma on March 30, 1941
he states he became a citizen on 9/5/1901. He then took his wife and
daughter to Fayal 28 days later on 9/29/1901, he claimes to have returned
with his family on March 17th, 1902 but it was actually on May 17th, 1902
aboard the ship Peninsular with his wife and daughter.
He was Antone Perry Sr. (Antonio Silveira Pereira), his wife Mary Perry
(Maria Leal da Rosa), and my Ggrandma Mary Perry (Maria Pereira)
Now on paper he seems to get the date of the day correct, but yet he's
almost always wrong about the year.
I looked for his naturalization and passport at the local level, county
level, state level, Nara, US immigration index search, I've also asked the
courts at the town, city, county, state and federal levels and they tell me
they have nothing. As for me trying to find him or anyone else in the CCA
records I'm almost ready to concede defeat, I can hardly match up the
information I have recieved from all of you with your translations.
Can anyone help point me the right direction?

[AZORES-Genealogy] naturalization

2013-12-13 Thread Mike
I found on ancestry a naturalization record, looks like an index card on a
roll-a-dex for my GGgrandfather Antonio Silveira Pereira for Sept 5th,
1901, this date matches exactly what he told in a news paper article about
him. It also falls in line with with a passenger list record him, his wife
and my great grandmother, for them returning from the Azores May 17th,
1902, on the ship Peninsular for a trip he mentions in the news paper
article as well.
Everything I have though says he lived in and around the New Bedford,
Dartmouth, and Fairhaven area, but the Naturalization shows him becoming a
citizen in Providence, RI.

My question is, since I can't find any record of his naturalization in
Mass, for that time, would he have to take a trip to Providence for
naturalization in 1901?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: naturalization

2013-12-13 Thread Mike
I understand that because he was married here in the states that his wife
would automaticaly be naturalized as well. If I can ever get the record
would she be listed in the information as well? That would help make sure I
have the right man because with her I know she is the correct person.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: naturalization

2013-12-13 Thread Mike
yes he did go back home 23 days after being naturalized, and himself,
Antone S. Perry,(Antonio Silveira Pereira), wife Mary Perry(Maria Leal da
Rosa), and my Ggreat grandmother Mary Perry age 4(Maria Pereira). Their
names all changed to perry I'm assuming after naturalization. They all
returned May 17th, 1902 in NY aboard the ship Peninsular. So if I know when
and where they came, can I go from that to his naturalization, to passport,
that might pinpoint where he was from to hopefully figuring out if the man
I think I have in cedros is actually the right man?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: naturalization

2013-12-14 Thread Mike
Yes, I've written to new bedford, dartmouth, fairhaven, bristol county, the
county court, the supreme court, state archives in boston, nara, and
immigration, it's like he never even existed when it comes to his
citizenship or passport for traveling home and back, though I'm learning
that records for that before 1906 are hard to find from what I've been told
in replies to my written requests.. But that's not the case because I have
his marriage, death certs

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Putting our research on Ancestry

2013-12-19 Thread Mike
When I first started on my family I began with my Italian side first mainly
because my mother and grandmother are both still alive. Being a novice I
started on Ancestry, luckily I had living relatives I could ask if
something was accurate. That was 4 years ago, I have kept my tree private
from the public but I did exchange editing ability with an Italian
Genealogist from Toronto after he answered a post I put on the message
boards seeking help with a surname. It turned out that we are 4th cousins
the road map to where we connected was already in place for the most part,
he filled in some blank spots I had especially from Italy, and I was able
to give him the whole family that settled here in western NY.
Yes you can see how easily trees get corrupted with sons becoming
grandfathers to their father and so on, but strictly as a document finding
tool it has been tremendous for me. Now my research is nothing like what
most of you have been able to do, if it was to correct bad information that
has already been published somewhere I would hope that a researcher would
be willing to help with that. But as for everything else, if I really can't
find something having to pay for someone elses abilities is expected.

I know I'm asking allot and if you say no I understand, I have one picture

[AZORES-Genealogy] religious items

2014-04-20 Thread Mike
Friday while visiting my grandmother(92 yrs) old, she wanted me to have and
gave me the Rosery beads that belonged to my GGgrandmother Luisa Emilia da
Silveira, born may 1861 Salao, Faial. Married Jose da Rosa Pinheiro from
Cedros, Faial, they married and lived in Cedros but when she died it was in
Salao and she was buried there. I don't have those details about her
husband.
My question is at what time would she have been given the Rosery beads? Are
there any traditions? Such as passed down from generation to generation? Or
were they hers and did people who died take them on there next journey?
For the beads to have ended up here in the states she must have passed them
down to my Ggrandfather or to her one daughter that also came to the states?

My grandmother who gave them to me is Italian, but my grandfather was
Portuguese of Azorean descent who had the Rosery beads until he passed.

I'm curious about the histories about how, why, and who obtained the beads
which I now hold in my hand. They are made out of all medal, the details
are all hand made and spectacular. You can tell they are very old.
Should I have them blessed now that they are in my possesion?
I know that's a lot of questions but i've never been given such a gift and
I want to make sure I treat them as they should.
Thank you!!!
Mike

I joined the list 2 years ago when I asked a question about DNA and got my

Hi Bella,
if you're related to Patricia then there's a chance that you're related to
me as well as my Ggrandfather was from Cedros, Faial and another line with
my GGgrandpa is also from Faial. The surnames are Pinheiro and Pereira
respectively. I am part of the Azores DNA project.

I'm not very good at finding anything but I'm pretty sure this is my

The first link it's on the bottom of page then next page it carries to the
top of next page. I'm really hoping after all this time I found one on my
own.

[AZORES-Genealogy] great grandpa help

2012-05-07 Thread Mike
I would like to ask for some help with finding my great grandfather. We
believe his name was Jose(Joseph) Pinheiro(Pine) based on what my grandma
who's still living tells me. He was married to my great grandma Maria
Pereira(Perry) we believe between 1916/1918 based on when my grandpa
William Francis Pine was born on 2/16/1918.
Joe Pine died before 1920 because he is not listed on the census of 1920
when my great grandma moved back home to new bedford to her mom and dads
home.
My grandma believes Joe Pine was aprox 23 when he died and she believes it
was in California, We believe that Maria and Jose got married in California
because my grandma said she followed Joe Pine out there.
Anything the group can help with would greatly appreciate, if more
information is needed so you can help I can try and find it for you.
Thanks Ahead,
Mike

[AZORES-Genealogy] challenge

2012-05-20 Thread Mike
My gggrandparents didn't make the search for their wedding information easy
especially since it's obvious my gggrandparents weren't all that accurate
with what year it was when what information the family did have the years
of events didn't quite match in most things. Now it's possible because new
bedford, dartmouth and fairhaven were all one big city at one time.
They got married at St. John the Baptist church in New Bedford, got their
marriage license in Fairhaven, lived in South Dartmouth, but I finally have
everything in the mail coming to me.
I received the marriage certificate from the church and it has their full
names and their parents full names, the clerk in Fairhaven read off the
information on the license and it said more or less the same thing, but
Fairhaven didn't have the application paperwork. But somehow Joan at the
New Bedford library had access to that set of papers and it is in the mail
to me as of last Thursday.
Of course nobody has the same last names, parents to children, husbands to
wives, so the search will expand by a couple more layers, I'm hoping that
there will be more information with concern to where they are from.
my gggrandfather and family clues lead to Faial, and my gggrandmothers
family hails from Pico so at least I got a little closer.
You guys have been great to me answering all my questions, pointing in new
directions where to look.

[AZORES-Genealogy] find a grave

I had never heard of the find a grave website so I gave it a try and
located my gggrandparents grave and headstone. But I have a question, on my
gggrandparents marriage certificate from St. John the Baptist church and
their marriage license has my ggg grandfathers has his name listed as Jose
Leal da Rosa, born 1845 died 1886. But on the headstone it has his name
listed as Manuel J. Leal. So how do I confirm what his name is exactly if
that is at all possible? I believe I'll need to know to get any farther in
my search.

[AZORES-Genealogy] how to verify

2012-06-05 Thread Mike
On the Neps website I think I've found a good possibility, my great
grandfathers name was Joseph Pine who you've helped me with before and we
have always believed he was from Cedros we believe his last name was
Pinheiro and from his marriage cert to my great grandmother his parents
names are listed as Joseph(no last name) and Louise silveira. from my,
grandma I know Joseph Pine had a sister named francis.
So on Neps I found a listing for a Jose Pinheiro with his parents listed as
Jose Da Rosa Pinheiro and Luisa Emilia Da Silveira. they had a son Jose
born 1893 and a daughter named Francisca B in 1897.

But my problem is I have very little to compare this to to verify these
names, can you give me some suggestions on how and where to look?

[AZORES-Genealogy] age question

2012-06-15 Thread Mike
I have marriage license and marriage certificate from the church that put
my GG grandfathers year of birth in 1872, have an obituary that would put
his birthday in 1867, a headstone that would put it in 1867, a newspaper
story that indicates his birth would have been in 1868 and the census that
would put it in 1870. So until I can somehow find the village he came from
and then locate a birth certificate, knowing that he couldn't read or write
how accurate would someone be with knowing the year of his own events and
happenings?
Are these variations in dates commonplace among the portuguese of those
times?

[AZORES-Genealogy] social security

2012-06-18 Thread Mike
I've read where some people have been able to find information they didn't
have before from their ancestors application for a social security number.
If your ancestor died before you knew him and most of your family is gone
is there a way to know if your ancestor had a SS number to make it worth
the effort of trying to get the records?

I'm going to our local family history center today, and I'd like to ask
what type of things can I look for there that can't be found on their

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] family history center

2012-06-19 Thread Mike
I live in western NY, I didn't learn anything new except that the center
near me specializes in our local area only, but they did tell there is a
central center in the city that will have access to everything they have.
They also told that there is a genealogy society that meets at the main
branch of the city library and I might be able to get some help from them.
So my search continues to try and find out where on Faial and Pico my
family is from, I've gotten names of my GGGgrandparents but nothing else...

[AZORES-Genealogy] question about the Neps website

2012-06-26 Thread Mike
I've had a break through thanks to some great help from you all. But I have
a question about the Neps website. Are those people listed done so as the
Azores gov't goes through the books and lists them by name, what I'm
wondering are the results you find on the Neps website spot on accurate
with what they do have?

[AZORES-Genealogy] my breakthrough on Pico

2012-06-27 Thread Mike
I've been asked to share what I(we) found on Pico fpr my family
connections. I knew from my GGgrandmothers (Maria Leal Rosa) marriage
license and certificate that she was from Pico, I knew her name and when
she got to New Bedford, Ma. But that was all. Couldn't find a record of her
arrival, anything. But I did know from her obituary that she was survived
by a brother Antone Leal in Irvington, Ca which is now Fremont, Ca. Elaine
had found one there and we were researching him but Elaine got contacted by
one of his now family and we learned it was the wrong Antone Leal. Then
Elaine found a ship's passenger list with a Antonio Leal Rosa arriving into
Boston and his reason for coming was to see his sister Maria and Brother in
Law Antonio Pereira in S. Dartmouth, Ma. which is exactly where they lived.
Then by knowing his Portuguese name I found him on Neps, with a sister
Maria my GGgrandma, and a sister Rosa who was named in Maria's obituary, so
I was pretty sure I had the correct kids. Their parents were listed as Jose
Leal Rosa and Francisca Anjos who were named on Maria and Anotnio's
marriage license and marriage certificate from St.John the Baptist church.
Ok it has to be the right family, I had the right names, the right island
and now where on Pico they were from, Piedade, Lajes do Pico, Pico, Azores,
Portugal. From that there are more parents, cousins, aunts, uncles,
grandparents and in some cases another spouse with more kids. The important
thing is now i have what I think are exact names, birthdates, and where
they are from so that I can ask Joao Ventura or someone else to find the
certified records to back up what we think is the right family on Pico.
I have more names from what I've looked at but so far from Pico they are
Leal, Rosa, Anjos, Dias, Fraga, Avila, Lima...
So lets compare notes...Mike

[AZORES-Genealogy] confirmation

2012-06-29 Thread Mike
I got an email overnight from Mr. Doug da Rocha Holmes. He has traced all
the names in my list from Lajes do Pico and has sent me the translation of
my GGgrandmother Maria Lial da Roza baptism from the church record. I had
the year right but now have the date.
But best of all He Identified me as one of his cousins, so I have my first
official living cousin from the Azoires. Since he has already traced
everyone he is going to be my source for ordering documents from my
families lines.

[AZORES-Genealogy] can you help

2012-07-08 Thread Mike
I am hoping that the group can help me once again as I'm stuck.I am trying
to find my great great grandfathers entrance in the USA, his name was
Antonio Silveira Pereira(Antone S. Perry) born aprox 1867, died July 6th,
1957 in New Bedford Mass. A story about him claims he arrived in New
Bedford on April 1, 1888. He married Maria Lial da Roza on June 13, 1896,
he became a naturalized citizen on September 1, 1905.
The story also says he went back to Faial late 1901 and returned spring of
1902, so there are 2 times he entered the US, first as a Portuguese citizen
then as a US citizen after marriage.
He lived his whole life the majority in South Dartmouth, Ma
Any help finding his travel records would be very grateful

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: can you help

Can you tell me where it says he was born? I can't see it good enough to
make out all the letters...and thank you, not sure if it's him yet but it's
a start. I'm hoping to find his trip home in late 1901 and his return in
spring 1902, it would have been to Faial where he was from...Mike

[AZORES-Genealogy] definition

2012-07-14 Thread Mike
Joao,
has found a marriage record for me and it says they were dispensed by
consanguinity, and if the dispensantion record is available it will have
more information than the church records.
My question is what does dispensed by consanguinity mean? were they
related? what type of information will the papers get me?

2012-07-16 Thread Mike
Okay since our ancestors married within the family and some of them like my
GGGgrandfather who was married twice both times to an extended family
member is it even possible to diagram this out on paper to see how it all
lays out?? I'd like to place names on paper and connect them to each other
with lines but that might be impossible i'm thinking.

Thankyou so much to Cheri, Kathy, Elaine, Doug and those whose name I don't

time frame find the freguesia, the church and my great great grandmothers
baptism, her parents and both sets of her grandparents. Thank you doesn't

[AZORES-Genealogy] where should I go now

2012-07-16 Thread Mike
*A researcher found and translated my great great grandmothers Baptism
record and from it I got the following information:*
On 15 March 1868, in the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, council
of the village of Lajes do Pico,
baptized an individual of the feminine sex, to whom he gave the name of
Maria, who was born in this parish at 10AM on the 7th day of March, her
father was Joze Lial da Roza and mother was Francisca dos Anjos.
Her paternal grandparents were Francisco Lial da Roza and Anna Maria, her
maternal grandparents were Joaquim Lial Roza and Roza Maria.
They were all natives of this parish, married in this parish of which they
are parishioners, and residents in the neighborhood of "Cruz do Redondo.

I next obtained Joze Lial da Rosa and Francisca dos Anjos marriage record
but didn't give me anything I didn't already know but for one thing, Joze
was married once before and had other children, both of his wives were
connected his first wife in the 3rd and 4th degree, and to my
GGgrandmothers mom in the 2nd degree.
I know this is a lot of info and maybe not explained to well, but who's
record should I aim for next, my GGgrandma's siblings? her parents baptism
and birth?(which is my choice)Mike

Hi all, someone I can't remember her name right now sent me a copy of my
4th great grandfather's marriage record off the CCA website, and I've been
trying to figure out what it says but so far have only been able to find
their names. If I posted it or sent it to someone would you be willing to
translate it for me??
But I think I might be able to actually find when all his kids, because I
know their names and dates, and in the meantime I'm going to keep trying to
learn how to read them by comparing what is written to the translation that
Joao Ventura did for me on another record.

[AZORES-Genealogy] national archives question

2012-07-26 Thread Mike
I'm looking at the national archives website to possibly see about ordering
film to try and find more naturalization information that what I was able
to find on Ancestry.com. But the records they show are for the north
eastern states and there are 70 rolls of film for mass, maine, new
hampshire and vermont. it looks as though the rolls are listed
alphabetically, my questions if each roll shows that your relation could
possibly be on 60 of them because the rolls go from a-z, c-t, f-w, my grt
grt grandfathers name starts with a P how do you narrow down your choice of
rolls to order? I don't live near a location where I can look through them
all in person. Or should I leave this search until the someday I may be
near an NARA facility since the rolls are $125/pc?

[AZORES-Genealogy] immigration

2012-08-15 Thread Mike
I've been all over ancestry looking at passenger lists for the east coast
trying to find my grt grt grandparents entrance to the USA, i've used their
Portuguese names and their anglicized names, supposedly he came here in
1888 and she arrived in fairhaven, ma. in 1893. I can only find hints to
their arrivals for the year they came. But I can't find anything specific.
Is there there other websites that I can search for passenger lists or
travel into or out of the country?

according to the 1920 census my great great grandma immigrated in 1893 and
the 1930 census says it was 1895. She would have been 25 or 27 upon

2012-08-26 Thread Mike
I have Cheri's info on how to read the records on the CCA site, I've just
always been better with numbers than I am with words whether in another
language or english. My question was would they have left Pico to come to
the USA together? How likely is it that she would have come here by herself
as a single woman even though she was 8 years older than her brother and he
cam here married, Her name was Maria Leal dad Rosa b1868 d1932 my info has
her arriving in Fairhaven, Mass. in 1893. His name was Antonio Leal Rosa
b1875 d?, he married Maria Paulina b1879 d? all were from Piedade, Lajes do
Pico, Pico. Did I read somewhere correctly that they would have needed
passports to leave the Azores for the USA? what info do I need and is it
the CCA site I will have to look?

2012-08-27 Thread Mike
Yes I have the Neps record, their sister Rosa was born in 1870 and at some
point she moved to Angustias, Faial and died in 1939, I don't think the
naturalization record posted is for my Antonio because I have his birth
and baptism from the church record book he was born in 1875 and married a
maria paulina in 1897 before coming to the USA, I also have the marriage
record and certificate for Maria and Antonio in 1896 from St. john the
baptist church in New bedford, Mass. the arrival that E found could very
well be her, I'm thinking that I need to find a passport for her leaving
Pico to come here to prove or disprove it is her?
I'm thinking that they didn't come to the USA at the same timebecause of
the age she married my Grt Grt grandfather and that Antonio married while
still on Pico after maria married here. I'm sorry if this is confusing, I'm
starting to think I should just move on to something else for now and come
back to their arrival here at a later date.
I really do appreciate all you have done on my behalf...

[AZORES-Genealogy] great grandfather

2012-09-06 Thread Mike
I'm going to try and find information on my great grandfather again,
I know his anglicized name was Joseph Pine
He was born 23 October 1894 from his WWI draft registration in Fairhaven,
Mass.
He died between 1918 and Oct 1924, these dates coincide with my grandpa's
birthday and my grt grandmas 2nd marriage, his WWI record confirms his
throat affliction.
He married my great grandma Maria Pereira on May 19, 1917 in Dartmouth, Mass
This is all I could find and verify that's it him, because he died so
young, my mother and grandmother don't know anything about him, I don't
know where to go next or if I even have enough to find anything.
Mike
searching, Piedade, Pico and Faial ??

He was born we were led to believe in Cedros, but that's maybe a 1% chance
right now, his draft reg is only from fairhaven because that's where he and
my grt grandma lived at first.

I agree, what isn't common knowledge to the family and is only learned by
you through hearsay I'd leave out. Nobody wants to learn that someone in

[AZORES-Genealogy] A BIG THANK YOU!!!

2012-09-11 Thread Mike
I don't exactly remember which one of you found the church in New Bedford
for me for my Ggrandparents marriage based on just the priests name. But I
just got off the phone with the church secretary for Our Lady of Mount
Carmel because I had the date she was very easily able to find their record
of marriage and she is sending me a certificate with all the information.
Now I have his full name, and his parents full names. these names match up
exactly with a family on the Neps site for Cedros, Faial. Now I just have
to find a way to prove that he actually came here from that village and is
the right guy.

[AZORES-Genealogy] do you know him

2012-09-12 Thread Mike
In our family burial plot in St. John the Baptist cemetery in New Bedford,
Ma. There is a man named Joao Jose Pacheco, he was buried on November 30th,
1918. According to the cemetery records he was 92 years old. As far as I
know he is not a member of our family, I do understand that families helped
out other families if money was an issue when it came to burying family
members.
Is it possible that he is related to any list members?

[AZORES-Genealogy] Neps question

2012-09-14 Thread Mike
I was wondering something about the Neps webpages. If in fact you are
looking at a family that you know for sure are members of your family. The
dates of birth, location of birth etc.., but there is no information with
regards to the death of the person, can that be an indication that they may
have died in the U.S. or another place?
I know that it's a stretch in my thinking but was just wondering.

[AZORES-Genealogy] struck out again

2012-09-20 Thread Mike
Well I struck out again in trying to find my gggrandfathers village on
Faial. I tried a index search for his naturalization paperwork with the
USCIS.gov website with zero findings, they said because of when he became
a citizen the records could be if at all in the state, county, city or town
archives. I tried Bristol county in Mass, they said no good, so I tried
Dartmouth where he lived with no luck, they are sending me his death
certificate but that only says he was from Faial.
Would he have needed a passport to leave the azores and since he was from
Faial and probably left from that port would a record of passport be there
and would it show his village of origin?
?His name was Antonio Silveira Pereira Sr., from what I've been told he
arrived in New Bedford on April 1st, 1888, but for his arrival that is all
I'm partially sure of.
Any ideas?

[AZORES-Genealogy] found him

2012-09-27 Thread Mike
Well we found him finally, my mom and her cousin always had said that my
great grandfather was from Cedros, the group helped me find his WWI draft
record, I found his marriage record and got the certificate from the church
after someone on the list told me what church to go to based on the priests
name. We knew he had a sister Francisca that we visited. I thought I had
found him on the CCA site but wasn't sure so I asked Joao Ventura to check
it out, he searched a 5 year span for births and yes it was him. So I'm
confident that I finally have the right guy, it never would have happened
without all your help.

[AZORES-Genealogy] names

2012-10-20 Thread Mike
I have in one family group from Piedade, Pico, that had a daughter named
Rosa Maria born in 1765, there is no date of death or anything else that I
know as of yet. In 1769 they had another daughter and named her Rosa Maria
also. My question is would they have done this because the first Rosa Maria
died very young? Or would it have been to honor the name of someone else?
Or did they just like the name?
I know it would help if I could find out more about them both and that it's
not safe to assume anything but wanted to ask the question.

On the plot where my family is buried the is a infant girl her name is
Estrella Duarte, born 25 November 1882, died 6 April 1883 in New Bedford.
She was buried in st. John the Baptist cemetery, her parents were Manuel
Duarte and Maria Nunes. That's all I got except that she died of a Spasm of
the Larnyx. I'm waiting to hear back on the death certificate but am hoping
maybe someone with more experiance might be able to find something.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Question on "unknown father'

2012-12-09 Thread Mike

someday to visit the lands of my ancestors. I think that it would be very
exciting and educational...
