[AZORES-Genealogy] Travel

2017-02-10 Thread Sami
If someone were living in Contra Costa Co.,CA and decided to just up and go
home to the Azores, by what manner would they have left between the years
of 1930 and 1940? Was there a direct passage from California to the Azores?
If by ship, is there a database where I could look for the person?
Thanks!

Rats! Do you know if a person could leave straight from California though?
About how long would it have taken to get back home by ship?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel

2017-02-10 Thread Cheri Mello
Well, if they lived in California, then yes, they left from California :)

In the 1930s (Depression) they could have left by ship and went through the
Panama Canal. They could have taken a train to the east coast and then took
a ship across. I doubt they used a covered wagon, since trains would have
been the modern technology of the day and made covered wagons obsolete by
the 1900s.

As for how long the trip was in the 1930s, I don't know. I know that the
Titanic left England on April 12, 1912 and sank on the 15th. I think it was
supposed to take about a week, if I remember my trivia. The Azores are
further west than Southampton though. And it was the 1930s and I don't know
how much ship technology improved between 1912 and the 1930s. So I would
guess a week or maybe a couple of days less. Someone on this list could be
into ships and would know much more about ships than I do.

The trip from New York to Sao Miguel took 5 days in 1937 (I have notes from

Does anyone have any idea how most of the Azoreans traveled to
California? I assume they took a boat from the Azores (there was no

around So. America and up to California by boat or did they disembark

We're planning a trip to Lisbon this summer and would appreciate any
information about researching Azorean ancestors in Portugal. I have reason

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel to California

2011-10-20 Thread Debra Wolgemuth

My great grandfather, Francisco George (Jorge) immigrated from the Azores in
1889 and entered the US through Boston. Today we think that Ellis Island and
NYC was the typical entrance to the US from the Atlantic, but it wasn't always
so. Ellis Island began as the main East immigrant entrance point on January 1,
1892. Francisco returned to the Azores around 1905 to bring his bride,
Lepoldina (Lena) Freitas, to the US. Lepoldina's entry is listed in the Ellis
Island records. Family stories are that Lena was also accompanied by another
female because it wasn't proper for a woman to travel alone, assuming she
needed supervision. Francisco and Lepoldina were married in Fresno, CA within
a few weeks of arriving on the West Coast by train. Then they settled and
built up a farm in Merced, CA.

The train route to California was on a northern route because there is no
complete southern passenger route to California. The way to travel west by
train still uses the scenic northern route. Many eastern cities connect to the
huge Chicago hub, where you can continue west, or travel down to the southern
states. From Chicago you travel west to Martinez, CA on the California Zephyr.
Then you have to catch the San Joaquin train south to Stockton, Modesto,
Denair/Turlock, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Hanford, Corcoran, Wasco and
Bakersfield. Many Portuguese settled in these cities along the San Joaquin
train route. There is a southern train route to California which takes you to
Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. To get to the San Joaquin Valley, you
have to board an Amtrak bus from Los Angeles, over the Grapevine (mountain
range), and to Bakersfield. In Bakersfield, you then get on the San Joaquin
train to all points north. When our ancestors immigrated from the East Coast
there wasn't a bus line from LA to Bakersfield, so they definitely used the
northern route. It currently takes 3 days of train travel from Boston, MA to
Bakersfield, CA. With potentially slower train routes 100 years ago, I wonder
how many days it took to travel from the East to West Coasts? The only thing I
could find online was that it took 1 week to travel from Omaha, NE to San
Francisco @ $65 for an adult. Based on this, perhaps it took 2 weeks to travel
from Boston to California? Also, the northern route (California Zephyr) uses
most of the train lines laid by the 1st Transcontinential Railroad that we all
learned about in elementary history.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel to California

2011-10-20 Thread John Vasconcelos
Depends on when it happened. My maternal grandfather left the island of
Flores on a whaling ship about 1869. I don't know all the details but
basically, they went around the horn of south America and eventually ended
up hunting whales in Alaskan waters. His ship was caught in the "big freeze"
of 1871 in which ships were caught in the freezing ice and in some cases
crushed with loss of life. His ship fortunately escaped. On the way back he
jumped ship ending up in San Francisco from where he headed for Sonora in
the gold country where he got his American citizenship. He decided gold
prospecting wasn't for him and ended up herding sheep in the San Joaquin
Valley.

He eventually returned to Flores where he raised a family and lived out the
rest of his life there. Since he registered his children who were all born
on Flores with the Ameican Consulate (that make them NATURAL BORN citizens
of the US). Two of his sons (my uncles) both immigrated to the US at the
age of 18 on American passports and settled in the Fresno California area on
the recommendation of my grandfather.

My father immigrated from Flores to the US in 1909, arriving in Boston or
New Bedford , where he had a half brother. From there he took the train to
Montana where he had two brothers who were working as ranch hands. At some
point he moved to Portland Oregon where he had a sister and brother-in-law.
Finally, he moved on th Fresno where his sister and husband had moved

In all cases travel within the US was by train.

You won't be able to find any basic information about your Azorean

A few people on this list research mainland Portugal and have knowledge of
their records. Their national archive is called the Torre do Tombo.

Lorraine,

There is a Military Museum, I think it is Museu Nacional Militar, in Lisbon
and you might go and ask there. I did some research there on my Lisbon
family. Don't know if you have been to Lisbon before; if not, take the Hop
On, Hop Off Bus first. I believe we took the City Sightseeing one. You
will need to check where you can catch them.

Go all the way around one time to see where everything is. Then go around
again and get on and off to see those things you want to take in. If memory
serves me correctly, they have a ticket that is good for a 24 hr. period.
We took it about 1 in the afternoon so that was still good till 1 in the
afternoon the next day. We also walked all over Lisbon; sometimes it seemed
like one end to the other for hours, we also took taxi's to get to the
churches my ancestors were baptized; married in and homes they lived in..
Luckily, I still have many cousins still living in Lisbon and they took us
to many other sites in/around Lisbon and the beautiful coastline.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel to Pico in August

2017-06-09 Thread 'Susan Murphy' via Azores Genealogy
II haven't done this but know others that have taken some other carrier like
Virgin to Boston and then take Azores/SATA to Sao Miguel... Then do an inter
island from Sao Miguel to Pico etc. I just watched Ron de Silva on Facebook do
this. He was going to Flores and weather conditions there delayed him a day
once he got to Sao Miguel.

I'm thinking of doing that next time I go. Or I'm even thinking of taking some
other airline to Portugal and then flying back to the Azores. I see that
Ryanair is going to the Azores now but have not heard of anyone going. The
reason I'm thinking of trying to minimize my time with SATA is that I've had
more delays Hours to overnights! Than I have had regular flights.

It's luck of the draw with Sata!!

Thanks for reminding me Susan. We have taken Ryanair lots of time within
Europe. It is a low cost carrier but you have to pay for extras. Never had a
problem with them. Might just fly to London and do that. I think they might
also do Lisbon to SM. Need to check it out. Spend a couple of days in SM and
then to Pico. I also want to go to Flores. And then visit with my cousins in

I don't know of the train or ship ports. Maybe others on this list
knows. If it wasn't too far and before the automobile, I suppose some were
just
picked up by horse and buggy and brought to the home where they were going
to live.

The routes are going to depend heavily on the time period. You might want
to google "american migration trails" or "american migration routes" to
find information.

Sorry I'm not of more help.

My grandmother, Maria de Gloria Silveira from Praia do Almoxirife in Faial,
came to Massachusetts in 1892. She lived there for about 8 years and then she
lost her job in one of the mills. Her uncle, Manuel Vargas, lived here in
Sacramento and he was friends with Francisco Jose Luis who had just lost his
wife and was from Pedra Miguel a nearby area in the Faial. My grandmother was
in her late twenties and not married. When she wrote and told her uncle that
she had lost her job, I'm guessing he told her to come west and meet this
widower he knew. She came across country by train and told my aunt that train
robbers had tried to stop the train. She arrived in Sacramento and shortly
after married my grandfather, Francisco Jose Luis and became step-mother to his
6 almost grown children. She had 4 children of her own, two of which died in
infancy.

I am in the same "boat". My g-grandmother always said that the trip
from the Azores (mid 1880s) took three months and she was violently
seasick the whole time. We always thought she had come around the horn
to California. But I have also not found any indication that this is
true.

My g-grandfather--who probably was not acquainted with her since he
left the Azores when she was around a year old--paid her way. He is
the one (I mentioned earlier) who came to the Boston area and then a
few years later across the US via train.

I have wondered if G-grandma came to the east coast or really did come
around the horn (perhaps through Hawaii?) but I have not been able to
find her on any ship or passport list.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Travel from Azores to West Coast or West Coast to Azores (mode of travel)

2011-01-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Grace,

To clarify the time period (and I'm not a transportation history buff),
would before air travel be before WWII? When did air travel become feasible
for the average American (or Canadian?) So are you saying maybe from 1850s
to the 1950s?

I know some disembarked on the east coast and took trains. Mine did that in
the very early 1900s. I don't know the year of the Panama Canal off the top
of my head, but I know many sailed around the horn before it was opened.
Some of the early ones probably joined wagon trains.

I don't know of the train or ship ports. Maybe others on this list knows.
If it wasn't too far and before the automobile, I suppose some were just
picked up by horse and buggy and brought to the home where they were going
to live.

The routes are going to depend heavily on the time period. You might want
to google "american migration trails" or "american migration routes" to find
information.

Sorry I'm not of more help.

My maternal grandmother, Maria Jose Ferreira Dinis, traveled from Terceira via
white Star Line, S.S. Cretic to the US in 1915.  She is the one I could not
find entering via Ellis Island.

Elaine found her entering via the port of Boston.  She was going to: "her
father, Joao Ferreira Dinis; in Holt Station, San Joaquim."  Her father was
working in San Gregorio which is half way between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz
on the California border with the Pacific Ocean.

I found someone who worked for the railroad and asked about Holt Station.  I
was told that was a station in 1915 just outside Stockton, CA.  I have not
followed up on that information to see if the station still exists.

I also have a complicated story about my maternal grandfather; however, he left
Lisbon for the US in 1913.

Holt is still there on Roberts Island on Highway 4 a few miles west of
Stockton. It was the stop for the factory of Holt Manufacturing Company.

This was a major asparagus farming area. There were large numbers of
seasonal workers required, so labor brokers in Oakland and other areas
advertised in the Portuguese community
for workers.

I don't know if most of them came via the east coast or not, but my great
grandfather, Francisco Medeiros entered the US at Boston and then traveled
by train to Calif. in about 1904. He came from Cedros, Faial. He established
a ranch in the Briones Valley near Martinez, Ca with his father before
sending for my great grandmother, my grandfather (who was 7) and his brother
and sister in 1906. I found the ships records for them and it says that my
g-grandmother was coming here to join her husband in Martinez, Contra Costa
County, CA. I don't know exactly when they took the train to Calif but I
don't think it was very long after they arrived. My grandfather had cousins
who lived/live in Mass so they may have stayed and visited for a few weeks
first. My grandfather told me that the train ride was a great adventure for
him. I doubt my g-grandmother felt the same way though; riding a train all
the way accross the US without a man and 3 small children in tow. I have
such respect and awe for the bravery of these people coming here and all
they had to endure to start a new life.

to Azores (mode of travel)

I don't know if most of them came via the east coast or not, but my great
grandfather, Francisco Medeiros entered the US at Boston and then traveled by
train to Calif. in about 1904. He came from Cedros, Faial. He established a
ranch in the Briones Valley near Martinez, Ca with his father before sending
for my great grandmother, my grandfather (who was 7) and his brother and sister
in 1906. I found the ships records for them and it says that my g-grandmother
was coming here to join her husband in Martinez, Contra Costa County, CA. I
don't know exactly when they took the train to Calif but I don't think it was
very long after they arrived. My grandfather had cousins who lived/live in Mass
so they may have stayed and visited for a few weeks first. My grandfather told
me that the train ride was a great adventure for him. I doubt my g-grandmother
felt the same way though; riding a train all the way accross the US without a
man and 3 small children in tow. I have such respect and awe for the bravery of
these people coming here and all they had to endure to start a new life.
