Thanks, Donna.

I don't have a Mac and I am using Firefox due to security issues.
That explains why I'm having so much trouble. I wasn't aware that the

You might also try abebooks.com. They have several copies
available

from
their sellers, starting at $30.

My copy was purchased several years ago at Baker Books in
Dartmouth,

MA.
I
doubt that they still have any in stock, but it might be worth a
phone

call.
Their number is 508-997-6700. They're a good independent bookstore
with
a
section devoted to books of interest to Portuguese-Americans.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2012-01-02 Thread Judi Phillips

If you use the link I gave you, click on PontaDelgada on the middle of the
page, or go to:
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca-digital/PPDL1900-1902-item1I
hate these long links, they are easy to mess up.

I work at the gift shop at the Whaling museum in New Bedford and we carry
books on local history, Portuguese whalers, and some books that were
written by Portuguese immigrants. If anyones relatives are buried in
Dartmouth, we also carry a book that has every grave in Dartmouth.

You might also try abebooks.com. They have several copies available from their
sellers, starting at $30.

My copy was purchased several years ago at Baker Books in Dartmouth, MA. I
doubt that they still have any in stock, but it might be worth a phone call.
Their number is 508-997-6700. They're a good independent bookstore with a

2012-01-02 Thread Judi Phillips

Here is your connection.
Maria do Espirito Santo, wife of Caetano Moniz Furtado, is the daughter of Jose
Carreiro and Rosa do Coracao de Jesus. This is from the passport application
on 23 March 1901, group #203, pg 298. The site is
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/passaportes. I did not find Ermalinda with
them. You can search farther back for her. Sometimes, they file months ahead
of their trip.

You might also try abebooks.com. They have several copies available from their
sellers, starting at $30.

My copy was purchased several years ago at Baker Books in Dartmouth, MA. I
doubt that they still have any in stock, but it might be worth a phone call.
Their number is 508-997-6700. They're a good independent bookstore with a
section devoted to books of interest to Portuguese-Americans.

Check your local library for 'Portuguese Spinner' and if they don't have a copy
they should be able to get one for you from another library.  That's what I did

The book is out of print.  I called the publisher 2years ago and they did not
have any copies.  I got mine on Ebay.

You know that Ermalinda sailed from Ponta Delgada on March 30, 1901.  Go on the
CCA website and search the passport records from March 30 back until you find
the passport record.  It will have her parent's names, her age, and village.
You will have to search the microfilm records to find the connection,
especially
if the connection is through the maternal line.

Hi Pat,

You are correct. Caetano Moniz Furtado founded Furtado's. According to
"Portuguese Spinners", stories of Portuguese Americans in southeastern New
England, Emily Nunes
(Ermalinda) was Caetano' neice. In the 1930(?) census, Manoel and Emily lived
on Stewart St, Fall River with their daughters Emily and Gorgianna. Also note,
Emily was his 2nd wife, he was widowed. There is a nice story about the
Furtado's with pictures of the Furtados and Emily and her daughter. There is
no mention of Manoel Nunes.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-31 Thread Pat McCoy
Okay. Just in case anyone is researching Caetano Moniz FURTADO and
Maria do Espirito Santo FURTADO, I found the following listing on the
S. S. Dona Maria, sailing from Sao Miguel, Azores on 30 March 1901 and
arriving in the Port of New York 12 April 1901:

Caetano Moniz FURTADO 24 M Laborer Portuguese Fall River, MA
Maria do Espirito Santo 22 F Domestic Portuguese Fall River MA

It appears that they arrived with Ermelinda (CARREIROher last name
was not included on the roster...it only listed her first name) and it
also appears that Ermelinda's mother, Roza de Jesus 40 F Widow is
listed with them.

I have reason to suspect that this is the same Caetano Moniz FURTADO
who founded the business FURTADO'S in Fall River, Massachusetts,
selling New England Chourico and Linguica.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-31 Thread Gail Elizares
Margaret,

It is so puzzling because I can’t find his or my grandmother on any of the
ship lists. I can only think that the names were different on the ships.
Well I’ll keep trying and see what I come up with.

Thanks for the help,

Gail

Gail,

It may be coincidental but I have an ancestor from Sao Jose, Ponta Delgada,
Sao Miguel, Azores who immigrated to the Sandwich Islands in 1883 and his
family with him. Two (2) of the children were "Maria". His name was Jose
de Sousa Vaz Junior, wife Maria do Santo Cristo and their children were:
Jose, Maria, Luisa and Manuel. He and Maria were both 37 years old and the
children' ages were 12, 10, 7, 3 and 1 year old.

It is very common to have more than one child with the same first name on
the islands and it doesn't mean that one of them may have died. The church
recorded first names only.

Let me know if there's a connection and I'll send you what I have.

I received a copy of the passport appeal which had to be done in the Azores
before Jacinto Vieira Anselmo and family could leave Sao Miguel and go to
the Hawaiian Kingdom to work. Apparently they had to describe the workers
before the passport was issued by the local authorities to the Hawaiian
ones. They have an emigration museum in the province Ribeira Grande on Sao
Miguel.

If you want to do a search the site é http: / / mea.cm-ribeiragrande.pt
<http://mea.cm-ribeiragrande.pt/> /. It doesn't have alot but will grow. I
received this from the curator of the museum.

No. There are a lot of Furtado's and when I have time, I'm going to make the
connection. I've been getting close with the help of Rick Pimentel, but it's
been a process for me and because of work.

I just got connected to my cousin from Ribeira Grande on FB and thrilled. I
told her to join the group since she can help and maybe connect to some
people. Her name is Dulce Borges Costa.

Hi, Linda.

With all the different correspondences going out and coming in, I'm
not certain if I've contacted her yet. I don't know anything about
the parents of Manoel NUNES and his wife, Ermelinda CARREIRO.

BTW, I've noticed that part of your name is FURTADO. One the
baptismal records of Manoel's and Ermelinda's son, the names of
Caetano Moniz FURTADO and Maria do Espirito Santo FURTADO are listed.
Are those FURTADOs familiar to you, by chance?

Thanks!

Thanks, Judi.

BTW, I live in the DC suburbs so it would be a bit of a long journey
up to Massachusetts. *Smile* I think I still have the e-mail of the
kind priest who sent me the baptismal records so I can check with him
regarding the marriage records.

Thanks, again.

Do you have the date that their son, Manuel Edward Nunes, was born? Where?

FYI, at FamilySearch.org, I found the following under: "Massachusetts
Marriages, 1841-1915 for Ermelinda J. CARREIRO"

Name: Manoel NUNAS
Event: Marriage
Date: 24 Sep 1904
Place: Fall River, Massachusetts
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Marital Status: Married
Birthplace: St. Michael's, Az.
Estimated Birth Year: 1869
Father: Manoel
Mother: Francisca Candida
Spouse: Ermelinda J. CARREIRO
Marital status: Married
Father: Jose C.
Mother: Rosa De Jesus

I don't know anything more other than what I've found at
FamilySearch.org. I don't know their dates of births, when and where
they married, when and where they died, etc. I'm not certain how they
are connected to the FURTADOs that are also listed on the baptismal
record.

The photocopy of the baptismal record of their son, Manuel Edward
NUNES, states the following about the birthplace of Manoel NUNES: "S.
Vicente Ferreiro, S. Miguel (Acores)" and for Ermelinda CARREIRO
NUNES: "Arrifes, S. Miguel".

Is it safe to presume that S. Vicente Ferreiro and Arrifes are the
villages they are from even though I've seen them listed as
"parishes"?

Thanks!

Hi, Shirley.

I'm wondering if I could add my question here as well.

I have two people, from Sao Miguel, that I am researching:

Manoel NUNES from Sao Vincente Ferreiro Parish, (born about 1867 to
1869) and his spouse, Ermelinda Carreiro, (born about 1881), in
Arrifes Parish. I've attempted to send an e-mail to both parishes but
never received any response.

Do you think you can assist me?

Thanks!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-30 Thread Judi Phillips

Pat, Arrifes is a village just north west of Ponta Delgada. The church is
Nossa Senhora de Saude. Sao Vicente is on the far northwest coast of Sao
Miguel. I don't know the parish, but you can find out on Family Search. Check
with your nearest Family History Center to see if they have it. If you live in
southeast Mass, Darthmouth FHC has the film. If you viewed the marriage record
on Family Search, the church is listed on the far right. I believe I saw The
address for St. Michael's on Essex St, Fall River. You can get a copy of the
marriage if you write with a small donation. The priest is very helpful.
Please check the record yourself, I get forgetful lately.

Good luck

Thanks!

Miguel.

If you want to do a search the site é http: / / mea.cm-ribeiragrande.pt

received this from the curator of the museum.

Have you gotten in touch with Suzanne Carreiro from the group? I know that

My mother's cousin was married to Evaristo Carreiro who was from Ponta

Hi, Shirley.

I'm wondering if I could add my question here as well.

I have two people, from Sao Miguel, that I am researching:

Manoel NUNES from Sao Vincente Ferreiro Parish, (born about 1867 to
1869) and his spouse, Ermelinda Carreiro, (born about 1881), in
Arrifes Parish. I've attempted to send an e-mail to both parishes but
never received any response.

Do you think you can assist me?

Thanks!

Thanks, Shirley.

Manoel NUNES and Ermelinda CARREIRO were married in Fall River,

track down their families of origins and the villages or frequesias
they came from before they emigrated to America.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-29 Thread netadosAcores
Gail,

There was a family at our school and all 3 girls were Maria, so they went
by Maria Jose, Maria G. and Maria ?. There last name was Gomez.

Many times when a family lost a child, they would repeat the name. One of
my uncles had 2 Manuel's.

In my Grandmother's fmily it looks like the first Maria had died and they
renamed their next girl Maria.

It was the custom of Portuguese families to name their first born son
"Emanuel or Manuel" to honor our Lord, and the first girl "Maria" in honor of
"our Holy Mother".

This is so cool, finding about your family. Remember the saying you don’t

find out where my grandparents came from. On the de Souza family his first
name doesn’t even show up on the ships list. I don’t know if he went by
another name. I don’t know if he was married in Portugal or in Hawaii. His
immigration was in 1883 and his marriage. It shows 2 girls by the name of
Maria, one born in 1882 and one in 1883. I don’t know if they are the same
in one person or different. It showed my grandmother had 8 children and 6
was living but what I had is 7 if I include the 2 Marias. If they had two
Maria’s one could have died. I think there youngest child either died or
moved with someone else. He was 4 years old in the 1900 census and doesn’t
appear in the 1910 census. A lot of groundwork on this one. I just wish I
could spend more time with it. Pretty soon I’m going to be really busy and
won’t be able to do anything. I’m trying to find out as much as I can
using whatever resources I have and probably make the trip to Honolulu to find
the rest.

was a Passport of Appeals. On that record it said what city in Sao Miguel

Also, she went through the Birth / Christening tape of the prox year that

Hi, Shirley.

I'm wondering if I could add my question here as well.

I have two people, from Sao Miguel, that I am researching:

Manoel NUNES from Sao Vincente Ferreiro Parish, (born about 1867 to
1869) and his spouse, Ermelinda Carreiro, (born about 1881), in
Arrifes Parish. I've attempted to send an e-mail to both parishes but
never received any response.

Do you think you can assist me?

Thanks!

Gail,

Ally gave me credit for finding the appeals description on the Microfilm.
That's not quite accurate. I found baptisms and marriages on microfilm. If
your freguesia turns out to be Ribeira Grande in Sao Miguel the next paragraph
is very interesting. I actually found the village information on the Hawaiian
passports on the CCA site.

I received a copy of the passport appeal which had to be done in the Azores

My husband found his great grandfathers on the draft registration. My
grandmothers was on her sisters obituary.

Good luck with your search,

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia

2011-12-28 Thread Gail Elizares
Ava,

This is so cool, finding about your family. Remember the saying you don't
know who you are related too? It's going to take some time for me to find
out where my grandparents came from. On the de Souza family his first name
doesn't even show up on the ships list. I don't know if he went by another
name. I don't know if he was married in Portugal or in Hawaii. His
immigration was in 1883 and his marriage. It shows 2 girls by the name of
Maria, one born in 1882 and one in 1883. I don't know if they are the same
in one person or different. It showed my grandmother had 8 children and 6
was living but what I had is 7 if I include the 2 Marias. If they had two
Maria's one could have died. I think there youngest child either died or
moved with someone else. He was 4 years old in the 1900 census and doesn't
appear in the 1910 census. A lot of groundwork on this one. I just wish I
could spend more time with it. Pretty soon I'm going to be really busy and
won't be able to do anything. I'm trying to find out as much as I can using
whatever resources I have and probably make the trip to Honolulu to find the
rest.

Patsy found our family's record of deportation from the FHS tape. There was
a Passport of Appeals. On that record it said what city in Sao Miguel they
lived.

Also, she went through the Birth / Christening tape of the prox year that
our grandfather's were to have been born and found my Grandfather's record.
That was great as it confirmed who are great grandparents were and where
they lived.
