[Bacula-users] Bacula SD Broken Pipe after 16 minutes after ...

2014-06-01 Thread dave
Hi There,

this problem is driving me nuts. Bacula Server running Ubuntu 12.04. With
several clients mostly Ubuntu.

Problem with 2 Clients and Full Backup. Reaching 800GB spool cache - start
despooling - after 16:10 mm:ss +-10 sec. - Broken Pipe happens.
Backup Server has tape library with 2 LTO-4 drives. Local spool cache 1.8TB.
Spool cache max 800GB.

Error: bsock.c:428 Write error sending 65540 bytes to Storage
daemon:srv-01:9103: ERR=Connection timed out

26-May 22:38 srv-01-dir JobId 9291: Error: Bacula srv-vispa-dir 7.0.3 (12May14):

- reduced spool size to 80GB - then it spools/despools a couple times and
fails. BUT always 16min after despool starts
- upgraded client and server to bacula 7.0.3 starting from 5.2.10.
- it seems to happen only on clients where the spool cache max size is hit.
- maybe every 2nd time the backup works !
- SD and DIR are on the same machine.
- no firewall in between
- no router in between (2nd backup network)

Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

thanks
--> dave

[Bacula-users] Bacula SD Broken Pipe after 16 minutes after ...

2014-08-21 Thread dave
Since there are no solutions comming back from the community - I guess I am the
only one not overcoming this problem.

But least I have found a workaround.

Since we have increased our spooling cache to a size so that a complete full
backup of the servers fits - and therefore no despooling in the middle of the
backup is needed - the backup runs fine.

For me it is a clear bug somewhere in Bacula with all versions since 5.2.x .

Reading the error message it makes kinda sense now since the bacula-fd is
giving the error. Once despooling starts during backup - the fd continues to
send data - but is not getting an answer from the storage daemon. Hence giving
up. there seams to be some kind of communication Bug between the client and the
storage daemon when the despooling process starts.

Still I am not really happy with my workaround - and still looking forward that
someone kicks in with a real solution.

Best Regards
--> David

There is a work around. I have a dozen or so Windows Servers running
Bacula and I admin them all via RDP. Open your RDP file in a text editor
and add the following line to the top of the file.

connect to console:i:1

Note, you will most certainly boot anyone using the console when you log
in. In our case, there are no console users as the servers are all in
racks, so we don't care. YMMV.

I can confirm that. I have the plugin running every fifteen minutes on
over a dozen servers, with a script executing based on the result. I do
not see pruning messages each time the plugin runs.

[Bacula-users] dvd writing on FreeBSD6

2007-04-12 Thread Dave
Hello,
I was wondering what the current state of bacula dvd writing is on
FreeBSD 6? I've just installed bacula 2.03 from ports as well as
dvd+rw-tools v7, which i didn't know that was out until i got it, and was
wondering if anyone had used this combination for writing bacula backups to
dvd?
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] unable to authenticate with file daemon

2007-04-13 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm using bacula 2.03 on FreeBSD. My original goal was to get dvd
writing going, i jumped the cart before the horse, i had a previously
working config with tls going from 1.38 and brought the files over, it is no
longer working. I am getting a can not authenticate with file daemon msg and
a direction to the rel-manual faq on authentication. I've read that, and
can't see my problem. It's probably a matter of me staring at something for
so long and the issue being right in front of my face. I've disabled all tls
so for the moment that's out. I've checked in all files the names and
passwords they are the same as i said this is a previously working config.
The faq suggested maximum concurrent jobs the only change i made to that was
to increase the value from 1 to 3 in the director's config file. I don't
believe i'm having a firewall issue, i can telnet to each port successfully.
Any help appreciated. If anyone wants my configs write offlist and i'll be
glad to send them.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] can not connect to mysql socket

2007-04-14 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm trying to get bacula 2.03 working on FreeBSD. I'm using mysql5 as
the database server and i'm getting an error that a connection can not be
made to /tmp/mysql.soc. I've confirmed the file does exist. Using the mysql
command i can log in to the bacula database. For my mysql install i've added
the skip-networking and wait_time options to my /etc/my.cnf file and i've
also added a password for the root user. I've checked the manual and in the
catalog resource there's a section for defining a db socket, bacula is using
the right one. Here's my catalog resource definition:

# Generic catalog service
Catalog {
  Name = MyCatalog
  dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password = ""
}

The full error is below, but the base problem seems to be that bacula can't
talk to mysql over the socket.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] adding to can not connect to mysql socket message

2007-04-14 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've done some more checking of my bacula situation. To recap bacula is
giving me an error can not connect to mysql socket /tmp/mysql.soc. This is
bacula 2.03 and mysql5 on FreeBSD 6. I commented out the skip-networking
line in /etc/my.cnf, i didn't want mysql to listen on tcp/ip but have
interactions only through sockets, restarted mysql, restarted the bacula
director, and it worked. This says that skip-networking is the issue, i was
wondering if anyone had bacula talking to a mysql database using sockets?
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] basic bacula question on retention periods and disk backups

2007-04-15 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm trying to set up disk backup jobs. I've included my config at the
end of this msg, but i'm confused as to the difference between job
retention, and volume retention in the client definition, and volume
retention in the pool definition. I've read the bacula manual on these
topics, and i understand the shortest one takes priority, but i'm not sure
the values to set.
I've got a machine that has two jobs with it. The first backs up general
files, and i want it to back up according to it's schedule, and have bacula
automatically handle volume rotation. The second job is a monthly back up of
/home, where i want it to do one full backup and the incrementals until the
next full. And again automatic volume rotation, i.e. month 2's full volume
overwrites the current one and the incrementals do the same.
The problem i'm having is i'm occationally getting the error no
appendable volumes, which tells me i don't have my retention periods quite
right for this setup. Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] appropriate data spool size for tape

2007-04-15 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm getting my Quantum Dlt 4000 going with bacula. I've included my
definitions below and the job that i'm running. I'm not getting very good
performance with the spool, the drive starts and stops quite frequently, it
is on an Adaptec Ultrawide 2940 scsi controller. I was wondering the optimal
size of a tape data spool?
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula retention periods for disk backups

2007-04-26 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm trying to set up disk backup jobs.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula database comparison and pitfallsbacula database comparison

2007-05-23 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm about to create a new bacula server and given the issues i've had
with mysql5 i do not believe i will be using it. Does anyone have a
comparison of the various databases, sqlite, postgresql, and mysql,
specifically with bacula? I'm looking for issues with database interaction
as well as issues with the database size, i'm not sure how large this new
box will get.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] postfix and bacula bsmtp mail option

2007-05-25 Thread Dave
Hello,
 I'm running postfix 2.4.1 on FreeBSD, with the option
strict_rfc821_envelopes set to yes in my main.cf. I set up Bacula on this
box as well, v2.03. When i had strict_rfc821_envelopes set to yes I kept
getting the error "fatal malformed reply from localhost" and an error 501
from postfix in my bacula log. If i change the strict_rfc821_envelopes
option to no it works fine. I'd rather not change this option, does anyone
have a workaround? The specific error i'm seeing in the log is:

25-May 16:26 zeus-dir: message.c:481 Mail prog: bsmtp: bsmtp.c:92 Fatal
malformed reply from localhost: 501 5.1.7 Bad sender address syntax

and the message resource looks like this:

Messages {
  Name = Standard
#
# NOTE! If you send to two email or more email addresses, you will need
# to replace the %r in the from field (-f part) with a single valid
# email address in both the mailcommand and the operatorcommand.

  mail = [EMAIL PROTECTED] = all, !skipped
  operator = [EMAIL PROTECTED] = mount
  console = all, !skipped, !saved
#
# WARNING! the following will create a file that you must cycle from
# time to time as it will grow indefinitely. However, it will
# also keep all your messages if they scroll off the console.
#
  append = "/var/db/bacula/log" = all, !skipped
}

Messages {
  Name = Daemon
  mailcommand = "/usr/local/sbin/bsmtp -h localhost -f

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I added a \< and \> to the bsmtp line and that
didn't do it. If you've got this going could i see your bsmtp line for
comparison?
Thanks.

[Bacula-users] computer drags during backup, win32

2007-05-26 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm running bacula 2.0.3 on windows xpsp2. When doing any kind of
backup, i have the entire system set to back up and if i'm using the box it
slows down to a crawl. I'm using vss if that matters. On my various Unix
boxes this does not happen. I was wondering if there was an equivalent to
unix nice that i could set for win32? If not, is there a way of finding out
where this slowdown is coming from, a resource limit, network performance,
cpu, and how best to deal with it?
Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Bacula-users] computer drags during backup, win32

2007-05-26 Thread Dave
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Is there a way or is it possible to implement, a
method in win32 where the nice of the bacula process is set at installtime
or via a config option? I'd like to set the nice once in the process list
then not have to set it again or have bacula do it via it's install.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] misc questions on tls and data encryption

2007-05-26 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm setting up a new bacula server for a friend. It runs on FreeBSD 6.2
using sqlite2 as the backend database. All clients are bacula 2.03 as is the
director and storage daemons. Aside, for CentOS5 are there bacula 2.03 rpms
available that do tls and data encryption that i can get from a centos-repo
rpmforge just for example?
Backups are working fine, now i'm implementing tls communications between
the various daemons and data encryption from the file daemon. For tls
encryption i followed:

http://www.devco.net/pubwiki/Bacula/TLS

and for data encryption:

http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/Data_Encryption.html

I did some initial testing with a remote client, same network, small job. I
ran the job twice once with data encryption, once without, both times with
tls. With encryption on information was:

  Elapsed time: 11 mins 34 secs
  FD Files Written:   3,503
  SD Files Written:   3,503
  FD Bytes Written: 31,160,525 (31.16 MB)
  SD Bytes Written: 32,555,687 (32.55 MB)
  Rate:   44.9 KB/s
  Software Compression:   77.3 %
  Encryption: yes

and with encryption off:

  Elapsed time: 6 mins 6 secs
  FD Files Written:   3,503
  SD Files Written:   3,503
  FD Bytes Written: 29,080,372 (29.08 MB)
  SD Bytes Written: 29,524,318 (29.52 MB)
  Rate:   79.5 KB/s
  Software Compression:   78.8 %
  Encryption: no

After all that here are my questions. From what i can see it seems as if
there's a performance hit with data encryption, in the throughput area, is
encryption done as the files are going out? If so is that why the slow data
transfer rate? Same question for software compression, this one is a little
more slight, but without encryption it compresses a little better, though
unless your doing large backups probably not that significant. Lastly, in
both cases the fd and sd files written values are the same, but the amounts
are different, without encryption the byte values don't match, but they're
not off by that much, with encryption the mismatch is more pronounced,
question is the difference with encryption due to the fact that the files
are being sent as encrypted files?
NOw, away from the results, one last general question. Following the
bacula manual section above i created a master key called master.key and
.crt and a file-daemon specific key, called hostname-fd.key and .crt. One of
my pki lines references the master public key, but aside from that reference
there was no interaction between the keys during creation, i don't
understand how this master key will decrypt the client encrypted data if the
client specific keys are lost, since the private keys are not the same.
I hope all this makes sense.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula contributed rpms, differences?

2007-05-26 Thread Dave
Hello,
I was on the bacula sourceforge site looking for rhel5 rpms for CentOS5.
I found several rpm areas all for 2.03 but with different contributors. I
was wondering what the difference was between the various rpms?
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula client, automatic volume management

2007-05-26 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got a client with this new bacula server that i want to be
completely automated in terms of volume and backup management, bacula won't
require any intervention for new volumes, as that will be automated. I've
got the below setup, my only question is my file, job, and volume retention

Thanks.

Re: [Bacula-users] postfix and bacula bsmtp mail option

2007-05-27 Thread Dave
Hi Kern,
Thanks, that did it. I replaced that with %r as you indicated and it
fired right up, sent the email when my catalog job was done, came in as
[EMAIL PROTECTED], so i then went in and changed the %r again to the
fully qualified hostname i wanted and it worked. I would probably mention
this in the manual, it might be useful.
Thanks again to everyone.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula on centos with different filesystems, recovery

2007-05-27 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got a centos5 box that needs to be fully backed up because it's
going to be reinstalled with raid. I don't want to loose any data. I set up
a backup job that backed up / and /boot do i need to do anymore? The job
completed successfully, but i'm getting in the email output:

wserv-fd: /sys is a different filesystem. Will not descend from / into
/sys
wserv-fd: /dev is a different filesystem. Will not descend from / into
/dev

Do i need either of these filesystems if i'm going to be recreating the
system then installing from backup?
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula daemon msg

2007-05-28 Thread Dave
Hello,
I got this msg this morning from bacula. Any suggestions?

 28-May 04:22 zeus-dir:  Error: bnet.c:412 Wrote 4 bytes to
client:192.168.0.2:36131, but only 0 accepted.

That box is a windows box, running tls comm encryption. I can perform a
status client on it and see it so this is not a firewall issue.
Thanks.
Dave.

2007-05-30 Thread Dave
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. For me and i don't know if this is in general,
but in 5.0 there's a new timeout feature and when it kicks in if bacula is
running i end up with table corruption.
Thanks.

[Bacula-users] bug 807, fix?

2007-06-05 Thread Dave
Hello,
I was wondering if there was a fix for bug 807? I am encountering it, as
it's bug posters are, and would post directly to the bugs database, but i
don't think a msg like "I'm seeing this bug's behavior" as well would be
productive. I have nothing new to add and heard there might be a fix?
Thanks.

[Bacula-users] bacula backing up to tape

2007-06-12 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got a job that i want to back up to tape. It contains several Large
files that i don't want under disk storage, but i forsee a need to
periodically restore them say over the next year. I'm wondering the best
configuration, this is what i have.

Job {
  Name = "backup_to_tape"
  Type = Backup
 Level = Incremental
  Messages = Standard
  Client = client1-fd
Storage = "Tape Drive"
  FileSet = "isos"
  Pool = Default
  Write Bootstrap = "/backup/bacula/tape.bsr"
  Priority = 10
}

Client {
  Name = client1-fd
  Address = 111.222.333.444
  FDPort = 9102
  Catalog = MyCatalog
  Password = "xxx"
  File Retention = 45 days
  Job Retention = 6 months
  AutoPrune = yes   # Prune expired Jobs/Files
}

Pool {
 Name = Default
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes # Bacula can automatically recycle
Volumes
  AutoPrune = yes # Prune expired volumes
  Volume Retention = 365 days # one year
}

I've got the client resource already set up for this box, and it's retention
periods are working fine for another job that it backs up. But the job and
file retention periods for this job wouldn't work and i don't want to have
to continuously adjust retention periods.
Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Bacula-users] Questions for Bacula Windows users ...

2007-06-15 Thread Dave
Hi Kern,
Personal preference, i would prefer c:\bacula for the reasons you
indicated, the long path names and spaces, but i also have noticed that
prohibit programs from not working outside program files. What i would
suggest is a compromise, make the installation location customizable to
either location with a pair of radio buttons, the end user selects which
installation location is prefered based on personal preference and
environmental consideration.
Hth
Dave.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula 2.1.18 BETA released to Source Forge

2007-06-16 Thread Dave
Hello Kern and List,
I just downloaded and installed 2.1.18 on a windows xp box. The backup
went fine, i backed up a single directory, then on the client i renamed it i
guess simulating i lost it. So, i went to restore. I got the toplevel
directory back, and one subdirectory, it had three, and 9 files, there were
337 total. The files that were backed up/restored were fine, i get an error
and then it stops, it seems to hit the error and not verify signature or
restore anything else. I get the email stating the bacula restore failed, if
i go back to the server go bconsole and try a status of the xp client 2.1.18
i notice it hangs, it won't return a status. The icon in the systray
indicates the client is still running however.
If i can provide any additional information, deugging, let me know.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] network error job aborted

2007-06-18 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got a bacula win32 2.03 client that has been backing up fine. This
morning it didn't and gave me a fatal network error. I'm open to
suggestions, i've confirmed that all the daemons are still running. Here's
an excerpt from my bacula log.

18-Jun 04:38 titan-fd: Generate VSS snapshots. Driver="VSS WinXP",
Drive(s)="C"
18-Jun 04:40 zeus-dir: backup_titan.2007-06-18_04.35.00 Fatal error: Network
error with FD during Backup: ERR=Connection reset by peer
18-Jun 04:40 zeus-sd: backup_titan.2007-06-18_04.35.00 Fatal error:
append.c:259 Network error on data channel. ERR=Connection reset by peer
18-Jun 04:40 zeus-sd: Job write elapsed time = 00:05:48, Transfer rate =
615.2 K bytes/second
18-Jun 04:40 zeus-dir: backup_titan.2007-06-18_04.35.00 Fatal error: No Job
status returned from FD.

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Bacula-users] network error job aborted

2007-06-18 Thread Dave
Hello,
I really hate it when i try to respond to questions and when i do bacula
does not duplicate the error.
Brian, a status on the client showed that it never went down, i
restarted it manually with the flags you indicated and nothing more verbose
came through. Like Frank i'm also not convinced it's networking, this box
and the server do have firewalls, but they pass bacula traffic without
issues.
All of the daemons involved are 2.03, i'm not using any 2.1.x bacula on
this client.
Windows event viewer didn't tell me anything, i saw two errors around
the time in question, but i had a user on the box unbenounced to me playing
an online game, error came from one of the dlls it used. My first
speculation is that error that snafu whatever corrupted the vss snapshot, is
this possible or how could i confirm this?
The other thing that it might be although i doubt this as well is a
conflict between running jobs. The job in question started at 4:35, and died
at 5:47. I had another job, backing up to another disk volume totally
separate, kick off two minutes before the failure at 5:45. That client was a
Unix not windows box. It worked fine, but i don't like not knowing the why,
i suspect i will see more of this from this client.
Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Bacula-users] Cannot find any appendable volume problem

2007-06-20 Thread Dave
Hi,
Yah, just went through this one myself had some help for it. Your
retention periods are to short, your running out of volumes before the first
one is set to be recycled. The fix is either more volumes or shorter
retention periods. Your setup is remarkably like mine, if you get stuck i
should be able to help you out.
Hth
Dave.
Oh, forgot once you update your config files load up the bacula console and
do, this is going to take a while depending on how many pools you have, an
update pool and an update volume command for each client, that should fix
it.

[Bacula-users] bacula linux rescue CD procedure (FreeBSD)

2007-06-22 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've never used a Linux bacula rescue CD at this point i don't need
to do any bare metal recoveries of the linux box i have. I do however have a
need for FreeBSD bare metal recovery. I've got a few questions.
First of all, has anyone done this or got far with it? What i was
planning was to use the section of the freebsd handbook as a guide, make a
custom boot media, compile bacula-fd statically along with my system's
partition information, boot and see if i can do it. I realize this is rough,
but my goal is to get the FreeBSD bare-metal recovery as comprehensive as
the Linux procedure. To that end i'd like to know how linux rescue goes, i
imagine you boot, then run programs like fdisk and format and recreate your
system, then use bacula-fd to load file and boot information? If anyone who
has done this could give me an overview conceptually i'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Bacula-users] bacula linux rescue CD procedure (FreeBSD)

2007-06-22 Thread Dave
Hi Frank,
Thanks for your reply. I'll probably start manually, grind out a
procedure by hand then look at the Linux scripts and see what if any are the
freebsd equivalents and try to bring them over. My goal initially was bare
metal recovery for my own use, but the more i think about this the more i
feel that this would benefit all bacula freebsd users who might want to do
bare metal recoveries. My problem now becomes how to genericize everything,
how is the linux rescue cd-rom created? That's where i am going to take
this.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] specifying wildcards during restore

2007-06-25 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm using bacula 2.03 and trying to restore a file from tape. I have two
problems, first i tried to list the last 20 jobs run, hoping that what i
want is in there, but the display scrolled, is there a single screen only
option like more? My second issue, i do not remember the exact filename, i
remember where it was saved from i.e. client, which job though not the
jobid, but i do not remember the filename. I remember it's an iso file
that's it.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] requeueing stuck bacula jobs

2007-06-27 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got a bacula box that is stuck. The disk that was taking the bacula
jobs was filled due to an unforseen circumstance with another program. I've
since cleaned it and it, however bacula appears stuck. The first item i
noticed was that the backup catalog job was saying it couldn't find any
appendable volumes. I checked it and it looked like it tried to prune and
reuse catalog02 but couldn't reuse the file because of the diskspace issue.
I used bconsole to label a new catalog02 but i keep getting the same error.
I then did a status jobs and found out the 7 other machines from last
evening's set of backups are also stuck. I could cancel, but i'd rather fix
this for consistency.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula can not write to catalog volumes

2007-07-04 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm running bacula 2.03 on FreeBSD. All is working well, except i'm
getting a periodic error about not being able to find any appendable
volumes. This time it occurred with my catalog backup, i've included the job
and pool definition below. My issue with this is before the job starts one
volume, according to bacula, it's the oldest is pruned, then i get the error
can not find any appendable volumes. My understanding is bacula just pruned
the oldest volume so it should have that free for writing?
Thanks.

[Bacula-users] Restoring a crashed director server

2007-07-15 Thread DAve
Well I got surprise this weekend (6am Saturday) when a raid card failed
and we corrupted a mirror on our director server.

I reinstalled the OS, went to my storage server and used bextract to
pull out the needed files for the director server. This files include
the .bsr files, and my catalog backups. Of course I got all my bacula
conf files, contents of /etc and so on.

So I install bacula, install mysql, start both up, create new bacula
tables, login to bconsole, everything is there, wonderful.

I am now trying to get my catalog restored without success. I had
previously kept SQL dumps but had abandoned them long ago when all other
bacula restores had worked so well. I checked the chapters on recovery,
specifically here,

  http://www.bacula.org/dev-manual/Restore_Command.html#database_restore

Seems easy enough, and is exactly what I want to do, however I can't
make heads or tails of this line, "You do so by entering the bf run
command in the console and selecting the restore job". What is the "bf
run" command because my console knows nothing about that?

I have Cat-0001 and BackupCatalog.bsr on the server, just not sure how
to use them at this point. Am I reading something wrong?

I am on FreeBSD 5.4, Bacula 2.0.3, mysql 5.0.2

Thanks,

DAve

Ahh, just entered the run command, used the catalog backup jobid from my
last report, changing the job params using mod. Getting ready to run the
catalog restore job now.

I think I got befuddled from lack of sleep

I suspected as much, doing a new search I noticed lots of instances
where commands were prefixed with "bf" and "\bf". Tried just run as
normal and I am working with that now.

And I am up and running, Bacula has saved itself and quite easily as

It is a marvel to me how someone can give away a major part of their
life, their time, their talent, for free. Yet, when they ask for the
littlest bit of help or appreciation they are berated. Companies make
money on OSS, they MAKE MONEY ON OSS!.

I have an ongoing personal struggle which is currently leading me to
leave the internet industry. I work hard to try and get every company I
have been employed with the donate, not a pidly twenty bucks, more like
five thousand. The use of Apache (free) has saved the company I
currently work for over twenty five thousand dollars a year. The most
common reply I get is "we can't afford it", my response is "you have a
bad business model then because you based your companies survival on an
unknown resource that you cannot afford to replace".

This weekend Bacula saved my bacon, if we expand it's use it will become
a service we can charge clients for. The company I work for will make
money from the use of Bacula, as I am certain others on this list do
already. In my opinion a donation of 25% of the yearly cost of a
comparable commercial product is not unreasonable, it is a bargin. I
also know it won't happen.

This all reminds me of the story of the father explaining welfare to his
son. He tells his son to go to the park every day at noon and feed the
squirrels all they can eat. Go every day for a year without fail, rain
or shine. Then go to the park and give them nothing, see how long you
sit before they bite you.

I appologise for the rant, it was a long weekend.

If I read everything correctly, I believe we would be immune to this bug
at this time. While we certainly use concurrent jobs, each job is
written to a recycled volume each night. We have no jobs that span a
volume at any time.

Would that be a correct analysis?

[Bacula-users] bacula 2.2.4 openssl context error on FreeBSD

Hello,
I upgraded my bacula from 2.03 to 2.2.4 and now i am getting an error

in the configs. I've used ldd on the bacula* daemons and they all have the

Thanks.

[Bacula-users] bacula unable to find storage area

2005-04-16 Thread dave
Hello,
I've got a FreeBSD 5.3 stable box running bacula 1.36_2 from ports. I am
trying to get this machine to do network backups for a mixture of FreeBSD,
Linux, and various windows flavored systems. All appears working, on the
server all the daemons are running, but when i fire up the console and issue
status all when the storage daemon is queried i get the error:

"device status:
Archive "file" is not open or does not exist"

I've been going over my configs for the past hour and i'm not seeing the
issue. I've included the relevant parts of bacula-sd.conf and
bacula-dir.conf below and would appreciate any help.
Thanks.
Dave.

bacula-sd.conf excerpt:
Device {
  Name = File
  Media Type = File
  Archive Device = /backup/bacula
  LabelMedia = yes; # lets Bacula label unlabeled media
  Random Access = Yes;
  AutomaticMount = yes; # when device opened, read it
  RemovableMedia = no;
  AlwaysOpen = no;
}

bacula-dir.conf excerpt:
Storage {
  Name = File
  Address = zeus# N.B. Use a fully qualified name here
  SDPort = 9103
  Password = "baculapassword1"
  Device = FileStorage

[Bacula-users] experience with the following tape drives

2005-04-20 Thread dave
Hello,
I've got a FreeBSD 5.4-prerelease server that has an old HP Colorado 5gb
drive in it. I'm not 100% sure that i've got it configured right with
bacula, i keep getting write errors from btape. I believe i'm right so i'm
going on the assumption that the drive has died. I was wondering if anyone
had any experience with any of the following types of tape drives:

HP
Dell / Seagate ST224000N DDS3 scsi Tape Drive
COMPAQ 20/40GB DLT 340745-001 DLT drive
Hp SCSI drive model HP5647A
Hp drive model HPT4000 DAT

If anyone has any of these drives i'd appreciate any experiences, also any
suggestions on the colorado would be appreciated, i've tried giving btape a
minimum and maximum block size, no good. This is with bacula 1.36_2.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula, mysql, on Freebsd 5.3

2005-05-01 Thread dave
Hello,
I've got a working bacula install running on a FreeBSD 5.3 system with a
mysql database. My problem is on boot bacula starts before mysql, generating
an error, the director tries to access mysql, which doesn't happen. Once the
system is booted i manually start bacula and all is good. Has anyone else
seen this?
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] Catalog stopped backing up?

2005-07-14 Thread DAve

Good morning all,

I've read through the docs (doesn't mean I got it all) and successfully
installed and configured Bacula. Very nice program. I ran backups into a
single file for a while until we got an idea what we needed. I then
reread the docs section about Automatic_Volume_Recycling. I am certain I
missed something.

Once I got everything resetup and running Bacula appeared to be doing
exactly what I wanted except that my catalog backup is now failing.

I am at a oss as to understand why. Can someone please smack me with a
clue bat?

Thanks, details below.

Dave,

Your listing for Jobid 895, below, indicates a Backup Level of Catalog. I
think this is your problem. The backup level should be Full. Catalog is a
level used only by verify jobs. Unfortunately, I can't say for certain why
this is happening. All of your configuration stanzas seem correct, to me.

Agreed, but I don't understand why it is trying to use that backup
level? I don't have a backup level of Catalog anywhere.

The
only clue that I see is in your listing of pools. In that list the pool type
for your Catalog pool is indicated as Cat-. You might try deleting this pool
and allowing it to be created again, from scratch.

I don't understand, delete what? The media?

Also, are you running this job with a bconsole run command, or is it running
automatically? If from bconsole, make sure that you have selected the correct
level, before saying yes to run.

When I run the job from bconsole it works fine, but I have to mod the
pool to "Full" for it to work. Not seeing where the Pool is getting set
to "Catalog".

Should I post the complete bacula-dir.conf?

Should I send any output from bconsole?

No, the pool. From within bconsole, "*delete pool=Catalog".

I thought as much. I deleted the Catalog Pool from bconsole
and deleted the media volumes as well. I then created a new
Pool called "Cat-Pool" and labeled new media volumes.

I then updated my bacula-dir.conf to reflect those changes. Using show
Pools and show Media looks correct. I will see what happens tonight when
it runs.

Thanks,

Success! The only change being I created a new Pool with a different
name, how odd. But I am happy the catalog is backing up again.

[Bacula-users] bacula storage area maintence

2005-08-14 Thread dave
Hello,
I've got bacula running on a freebsd 5.4 machine backing up my network
of computers, two laptops, two additional freebsd machines, and trying to
figure out one dual boot box, is it possible for bacula to do these, one
drive is xp, the other fc3? My main question is my /var/db/bacula and
/var/db/mysql areas are growing quite large, and trying to manually maintain
this is proving now to be quite a headache. Are there any tools or utilities
that will help in this regard?
Thanks.

enable vss on it. Vss is working, messages when the job started confirmed
vss had started. I'm getting access denied on some documents, word documents
in my c:\docs directory, word isn't running, nothing is except vss bacula.
Any ideas as to why i'm getting access denied on these docs?
Also, a messages issue, when bacula atempts to send me email, i'm
getting an error 501 invalid host, this setup was working in 1.36. Any
ideas?

[Bacula-users] mailcommand and qmail

2005-10-24 Thread DAve

Howdy,

I am having a problem getting my messages from Bacula. I recently
changed out Sendmail for qmail ( I set up ezmlm for a client maillist )
on a client co-loc server.

I changed the mailcommand from,

mailcommand = "/usr/local/sbin/bsmtp -h localhost -f \"\(Bacula\) %r\"
-s \"Bacula: %t %e of %c %l\" %r"

to,

mailcommand = "echo \"Subject: Bacula: %t %e of %c %l\" |
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject %r"

Now I get no emails, though the mailcommand contents show up in the
bacula log. I believe I need to go around bsmtp and send the message
directly to qmail-inject, but that does not seem to be working. Google
provided no answers.

Normally

#cat test_msg_with_headers | /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject [EMAIL PROTECTED]

would get it done.

Anyone else solved this issue?

You are trying to use shell syntax with a pipe, but I think the mailcommand
has to be of the form:

program arg1 ... argn

It should work if you create a shell script to take the subject and recipient
args and invoke qmail-inject.

__Martin

I RE-read the docs and realised that the mailcommand takes the message
on stdin. So while my test worked, it sent no message. I do not believe
I can use qmail-inject in this way ( input in a list of args AND as
stdin ). Yes a shell script would be best there.

Currently I am working again with bsmtp and I have discovered it works,
but CHKUSER is rejecting the messages due to sender format issues. So I
ahve a few things to work out yet.

Thanks,

Ahh, the mailcommand is setting the From Address as "(Bacula) [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
which is not a valid format, my tests are stomping it. I changed this to
remove the (Bacula) before the sender address and bsmtp is again
working. I should have read the logs first...

[Bacula-users] bacula automated disk backups for multiple machines

2006-04-20 Thread Dave

Hello,
   Has anyone used the Automated bacula disk backup section of the bacula
documentation for multiple computers? I've got a box that i'm using that
particular setup on, but now i want to expand it to include three more local
and one offsite machines. I'd like for each machine to back up to it's own
pools, either machinename-full-date, machinename-diff-date, or
machinename-inc-date depending on if that box is in the process of a full,
differential, or incremental backup. If anyone has this i'd appreciate
hearing about it. I'm using bacula 1.38 and i might have need to move these
bacula backups on to dvd or tape media from disk.

Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] bacula dvd patch on freebsd

2006-04-22 Thread Dave

Hello,
   I'm trying to get dvd writing working on freebsd6 with bacula 1.38.8
from ports. I've installed python 2.4 and have set up the dvd device configs
in both the director and storage configs. My problem is when applying the
dvd patch it doesn't work at all, all hunk applications do not succeed. I've
got dvd+rw-tools 6.0.x something installed also via ports. If anyone has
this working i'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks.

If I understand you correctly the solution is quite simple. In your
/usr/local/etc/rc.d directory rename your scripts.

I rename my scripts with a number prefix to the order I want them
started. Example,

000.mysql-client.sh.OFF
100.mysql-server.sh
600.darwin_streaming_server.sh
700.proftpd.sh
800.apache.sh
996.streamingadminserver.sh.OFF
998.rsyncd.sh.OFF
999.bacula.sh

FreeBSD ports maintainers *could* do this during the install, provided
they had some way of knowing what order you needed things started in,
which they don't.

man rc.d will explain it quite well.

  Yes that was the solution + man rc.d.

 The only thing now is to know why sometimes /usr/local/etc/rc.d/bacula-
dr.sh stop sometimes dosent kill the daemon and others success. 80%Fail
20%Success...?

Read the start script and try running the commands manually. This almost
always shows the problem to me.

Keep in mind though that your login environment and the scripts
environment are almost certainly different. So just because it works for
you manually, does not mean it will always work for the script!

[Bacula-users] bacula dvd-writing on FreeBSd via dvd+rw-tools port

2006-05-10 Thread Dave

Hello,
   For those of you who have wanted to try out dvd writing on FreeBSD now
you can. Previously one had to, if you had the dvd+rw-tools port installed,
uninstall that, download the 6.1 tarball, patch it, and compile and install.
Now thanks to Chuck Swiger, the maintainer of the port of dvd+rw-tools the
bacula patch is included with it. We atempted to get it included in the
dvd+rw-tools tarball directly, but have not got any response from it's
author. So, he included the patch in the port. I just uninstalled
dvd+rw-tools via source and installed the new 6.1 port and ran:

/usr/local/share/bacula/dvd-handler /dev/cd1 test
and it fired right up. Undoubtedly more testing should be performed, but for
those, like me, who prefer to use ports to make upgrades and maintence
easier, now it is possible.

HTH
Dave.

I'm just curious how other users are backing up maildirs using bacula.
We're using cyrus as our mail server, so we've got about 162GB of data
stored in 4.4 million files, or an average of 37K per message. Most
other products I've tried (both commercial and open source) have not
been too happy with this arrangement and end up requiring vast amounts
of disk space and overhead to index this kind of mail spool.

Does anyone know if bacula is any better with this? If not, I'm
thinking my best resort would be to have each user's mail spool gzipped
before backing it up (we don't restore individual emails for users, so
this kind of "resolution" is sufficient for us). Any ideas on a good
way of doing this that won't require me to run an external crob job to
do the zipping and require almost twice the disk space?

Don't know why others are complaining, but I have 2 servers I back up
Maildirs from. One using rsync (my personal server) and the server here
at work. Here we use Bacula to catch all our Maildirs.

Theoretically, Maildir should protect you from inconsistencies. Worst
case scenerio, a few emails here and there get backed up corrupted, but
the rest of the Maildir will be fine. I've never heard of anyone having
problems in practice, and we've done a few test restores of Maildirs here
with perfect success.

Our mail server is rather small: 2.8G of emails total, a little less than
70,000 mails. A full backup only takes 8 minutes, and incrementals usually
take about 10 seconds. I guess our average mail size is about the same
as yours. If Bacula scales linearly, you'd be looking at 8 hours for a
full backup and 10 minutes for daily incrementals.

HTH.

There is another option. While looking at making backups of our
mailstore (40gb of Maildirs on NFS) we are considering doing archiving
instead. Have the mailserver write each message to another
mailstore/server. Purge on a expire date.

The option of having an archive of all mail available for a determined
time period is something clients have been requesting for some time now.
We are looking at archiving everything, inbound and outbound. Then
selling a web access to the archive for clients that wish it or clients
whose lawyers are making it mandatory. Of course the archived mail store
would always be available to you for recovery purposes.

Just a thought.

[Bacula-users] data spooling

2006-05-24 Thread Dave

Hello,
   Running bacula 1.38.9 on freebsd. I'm trying to get data spooling to
work for my tape jobs, those files i offload off of disk(s) on to tape. I've
got the below configuration, but as i understand it data spooling is suppose
to increase backup speed by writing continuously to tape so it doesn't stop,
start, stop, start etc. but instead goes continuously until done? With this

Re: [Bacula-users] data spooling

2006-05-25 Thread Dave

Hello,
   Sorry, i don't see any speed increases and the tape still does the stop
and start like it did before i added the data spool options. So it winds up,
runs, then spins down, and does that repeatedly, stops and starts.

Dave.

Dave,

What DO you see happening? You've given no indication. Is it just not
faster? Do you see the tape stopping and starting? That is an important
piece of information

Hi,
   I don't believe spooling is taking place, as i check periodically during
the job run, and i do not see any data being written to the spool area. I
have checked permissions and they are correct for writing.

Thanks.
Dave.

Do you see spooling taking place? If so, it is probably just not enough
as the other individual said.

As for no speed increase, keep in mind, the backup will actually take
LONGER as part time it's reading from disk and part time it's writing to
tape, but there will be load on the -fd for a shorter period of time.

[Bacula-users] bacula job file comparison for windows client

2006-06-26 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've got an xp workstation that has had some apps uninstalled yesterday.
These apps were:
winamp (uninstalled and upgraded to 5.24)
winace
adobe acrobat7 (uninstalled and upgraded with the latest 7.08)
Now whenever anyone atempts to get on the net with ie6, (has all the
security and hotfixes as of yesterday), ie comes up and then crashes. I've
tried reinstalling it, yah, an older version of ie6setup won't touch it
because the system's version of ie is newer. I've tried running sfc but that
was a bust and checking the event viewer has yielded nothing. I'm hoping to
avoid a reinstall.
In hopes of not having to do a reinstall i took a full backup of the box
immediately after, just in case, and later the director did an incremental.
I also have previous full and incremental backups. Here's my question, is it
possible for bacula to do file comparisons between jobs? What i mean is i
believe that sometime during these app uninstalls some shared component was
removed. It was in either the previous bacula full or incremental backup of
this box. Can bacula or mysql compare the full and incremental backup i took
yesterday with the previous full and incremental backup only, and show me a
list of files added or modified? I have no idea what file i'm looking for,
but a listing of changed files might help.
Any other suggestions welcome as i said i'd rather not have to reinstall
this machine now if i can avoid it.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] Reducing Bacula retention to gain space

2006-06-28 Thread DAve
Good morning,

We have been running Bacula on a few webservers with great success but
we find we need to reduce the retention period on one server. We
currently have the following setup.

Pool {
   Name = Inc-Pool
   Pool Type = Backup
   Recycle = yes
   AutoPrune = yes
   Volume Retention = 8 days
   Accept Any Volume = yes
   LabelFormat = "Inc-"
   Maximum Volume Jobs = 6
   Maximum Volumes = 5
}

Pool {
   Name = Diff-Pool
   Pool Type = Backup
   Recycle = yes
   AutoPrune = yes
   Volume Retention = 35 days
   Accept Any Volume = yes
   LabelFormat = "Diff-"
   Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
   Maximum Volumes = 5
}

Pool {
   Name = Full-Pool
   Pool Type = Backup
   Recycle = yes
   AutoPrune = yes
   Volume Retention = 6 months
   Accept Any Volume = yes
   LabelFormat = "Full-"
   Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
   Maximum Volumes = 6
}

Frankly it is more than we need and is taking up a considerable amount
of space. I would like to reduce it but I am not sure how to do so
without losing data.

[Bacula-users] pool definition aand tls questions

2006-07-06 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm using bacula 1.38.11 on a FreeBSD 6 box and redoing my
configuration. I've been wanting to get individual machines to back up to
there own subdirectory of my disk backup area, so i'm implementing that. I'm
following the automatic disk management chapter in the bacula manual. My
question for this is in the below output i have the Full Pool and the
Incremental Pool, but testing the config file i got a syntax error if the
pool=default line was not included, actually it just wanted the pool
statement. Why would i need this default if i had set up the full and
incremental pools?
My second question is for tls. I've got a remote box that i want to back
up, but i need to get tls going. I've set up the lines as indicated in the
bacula manual, now i need to come up with a ca and keys. Can anyone
recommend a good tutorial on making a ca and keys for bacula's use? This
will be for local clients as well, i want to encrypt all backup
communications.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] Run waiting job now.

2006-07-07 Thread Dave .

Hi,

Newbie question, so apologies in advance. I need to push the director's job
queue and run the scheduled backup now (ie. xx is waiting for its start
time). Is it (a) possible to do this and (b) also update the director's
schedule so that the backup isn't run later at the scheduled time?

Only just started using bacula, but am really impressed with it, execellent
software IMHO.

Thanks,

Dave

[Bacula-users] bacula console tls

2006-07-12 Thread Dave
Hello,
I'm trying to get tls going on bacula 1.38.11. I've created and
installed keys via the howto at:

http://www.eclectica.ca/howto/ssl-cert-howto.php

This part went fine and the relevant portions of my config are below. I've
restarted the daemons and all worked fine, i did not get any errors. When i
atempted to connect with bconsole i got an authorization error:

#bconsole -c bconsole.conf
Connecting to Director zeus:9101
Authorization problem: Remote server requires TLS.
Director authorization problem.
Most likely the passwords do not agree.
If you are using TLS, there may have been a certificate validation error
during the TLS handshake.
Please see http://www.bacula.org/rel-manual/faq.html#AuthorizationErrors for
help.

I've checked that location, and i've verified the names match. I'm running a
local dns server and have added an a record for the bacula entry. I'm
suspecting i have my tls options defined incorrectly.
    Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
Dave.

I think we have the same issue. We have Bacula behind our PIX and we
have a client requesting backups and he is behind another FW (brand
unknown). We are looking to setup each of his clients on separate ports
and use portmapping to send my director to the correct client fd.

Bob's IX is at ip 111.222.333.444
bob-a-fd ip = 192.168.10.2 port = 45913
bob-b-fd ip = 192.168.10.4 port = 45923
bob-c-fd ip = 192.168.10.22 port = 45933

If my director connects to 111.222.333.444 and port 45913 he should get
bob-a-fd, providing we mapped it correctly.

If his FW accepts connections from my PIX only, and only on ports
45913-45933 I think it should work. Of course I will have to open up my
PIX to traffic from his FW, at least to my director and my storage boxes.

Sound right?

[Bacula-users] Bacula error in Windows client

2006-07-20 Thread DAve
Good afternoon,

We have had Bacula running several months now and been very happy with
it. We just began doing network wide backups of our servers and all is
going well.

This week we began backing up a clinet machine inside our NOC. In order
to do so I have to go outside my PIX and back though the client's
firewall. This works fine for one machine inside the client firewall,
but not the other. Not real sure what to make of it. I tried searching
and found one message with firewall issues but no report of success.

I believe both sides of the firewall are configured correctly, certainly
because one client machine backs up fine. The only difference I can see
is that the failing server has a far larger backup file. The file being
backed up is the system-state.bkf file created by the ntbackup utility.

Below is a script of the director session showing the version of the
director (1.38.5) and the version of the FD (1.38.10). The final message
is the report on the failed backup.

Not real sure where to look next. Any suggestions are appreciated.

[Bacula-users] tls for windows machines

2006-07-22 Thread Dave
Hello,
This may be slightly O.t. if so please respond privately. I've just got
tls going with my unix clients. I'd like now to extend this to two windows
xp machines, but they don't have anything for generating keys. If anyone has
xp boxes doing tls i'd be interested in your procedure.
Thanks.
Dave.

[Bacula-users] tls for some clients, but not for others

2006-07-22 Thread Dave
Hello,
I've implemented tls connections with a bacula 1.38.11 server and Unix
clients, all worked well. My problem is i've discovered winbacula v1.38.10
does not support tls, so i've pretty much just locked out four machines. The
issue i believe is between the windows file daemon and the storage daemon,
the director can talk to this box, i don't have any tls directives for the
director and this machine, but the storage daemon requires tls. My question
is is it possible for machines that can speak tls to do so, while allowing
others, that can not to still function unencrypted?
Thanks.
Dave.

I was confronted with the same problem back in 1998 and I used ssmtp. I
think it was ssmtp, that was a long time ago. I set it up and continued
to use Mutt (which is still my favorite MUA though I have to use OE and
Thunderbird now) with no further problems. This is not a new issue, and
it is certainly not unsurmountable.

I've never felt that way here. I do wish the thread would continue in a
useful tone, as I may be experiencing the same issue as you. I will now
with the next set of clients I configure.

I agree with you, a terminal MUA can work just fine, as it did for me
eight years ago.

The thread I was so unclearly referring to was the thread which spawned
the current thread "Re: [Bacula-users] one system won't back up --
director crashes!". I think, it's all so confusing now.

I had issues with the Windows client earlier which were solved by
rolling the client version back from 1.38.10 to 1.38.6. When I configure
my next set of bacula-fds I'll know if I still have the same issue. They
are all five Windows servers.
