[beagleboard] BeagleBone Black and resistive touchscreen.

2014-03-04 Thread denissitall44
Hello all! Could you help me? And sorry for my bad English :)
I'm trying to connect BeagleBoard Black and 7'' resistive touch screen
i.q. in the Cape Board
http://dlnmh9ip6v2uc.cloudfront.net/datasheets/Dev/Beagle/4DCAPE-43(T)_datasheet_R_1_8.pdf.
 I
used Angstrom OS and Android JB -4.2 , and connected touchscreen to AIN0,
..., AIN3. But it's not working.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Coding with C/C++ directly on Beaglebone, via IDE?

2014-03-04 Thread William Hermans
There is no reason why you can not use an IDE / Editor on a PC and then use
SCP, SSH or whatever else to move the source over then compile on the BBB.

However, there is a reason why most people choose to cross compile.
Anything sizable will take forever to compile directly on the BBB.

[beagleboard] Re: Coding with C/C++ directly on Beaglebone, via IDE?

2014-03-04 Thread Karl Longen
Sadly there are no options to code directly on the BB; unless you run the
full desktop environment on a tv or monitor.

In which case you may be able to use a couple of lightweight text
editors...eclipse won't run on Angstrom decently; it would take forever to
use it honestly.

I hope that someone will make something simple, like Cloud9 but with C++
support, so you have a full IDE without having to cross compile.

The whole point of having a board that run a full OS is to have a full IDE
to write code, after all. This is not an Ipad/Droid device in the end :)

[beagleboard] Custom DT overlay only loads at runtime on 3.18.13-40

2014-03-04 Thread porkupan
Hi,

I created and compiled a DT overlay based on
cape-bone-dvi-00A0.dts. I can load the overlay at runtime (echo
cape-bone-sundvi > /sys/devices/bone_capemgr.9/slots), and it works). But
when I try to get it installed automatically via *capemgr.enable_partno*the
kernel refuses to load it.

The output of "dmesg | grep capemgr" after the overlay is
installed.
You can see that it was not loaded on startup, but no reason seems to be
reported. It did load successfully when the system was fully operational.
Here is the full dmesg .

I tried using the priority setting (
*capemgr.enable_partno=BB-UART1,cape-bone-sundvi:00A0:10*), removing other
overlays, etc to no avail. The HDMI drivers are disabled so there
shouldn't be a conflict. The stock DVI cape cape-bone-dvi-00A0.dtbo seems
to autoload without any apparent problems).

What is really strange, even when I simply copy the original
cape-bone-dvi-00A0.dtbo into another name (cape-bone-sundvi-00A0.dtbo), and
specify this new name in the uEnv.txt, it no longer auto-loads! The *very
same binary file*, only with another name. So the name of the dtbo seems to
make a difference. I thought maybe the overlays must be listed in the
main DT, in the list of capes. But I don't see the BB-I2C1 or BB-UART1
listed anywhere, and they load with no problem.

I am sure it's something simple that I missed, but I am really having a
hard time seeing what it is.

Thanks!

[beagleboard] BBB doesn't complete boot, little help :-)

2014-03-04 Thread brad . hopper
Hey folks, first time poster here, having some trouble getting my BBB to
boot.

Here's the story - I was previously booting fine and connecting to the bone
with both serial and ssh over the network. Then I installed OctoPrint, a 3d
printing controller. All was well, then installed mjpg-streamer and tested
- also working fine. Basically I then powered everything off and went home.
Now it won't boot - it will blink a little and then the lights go out. It
won't power on at all until I unplug power and try again, when it does the
same.

In the mean time I did image LinuxCNC MachineKit onto an SD card, and it
will boot from that - so I can get into the board, but the onboard boot
seems hosed. I'm used to working with Arduino, where you just yank th eplug
when you're done - this seems more sensitive and I guess my lack of orderly
shutdown (I actually don't even know how to do that yet :-) ) something
went wrong.

Any suggestions for how to repair the boot? I guess I could reimage it but
then I don't exactly know how to do that on the eMMC either. Is it
generally considered a good idea to move away from Angstrom?

Looks like I can use a DVI "cape" overlay, cape-bone-dvi, which provides
more resolutions choices. I need to make my own overlay now, as our setup

I am still having issues with 3.13.5-bone5 USB particulary with UVC

[beagleboard] Powering the BBB

2014-03-04 Thread Dorian Levy
I am building a robot that uses an 11.7V battery. I tried attaching a 5V
regulator to the T5(+)/T8(-) (pins with the T6(SENSE) bridged to T5 and a
10K resistor between T8(TS) and ground. The board only stays on for about
thirty seconds then shuts down. Is it because of the TS? What type of
thermistor does it use? Or should I try to use the barrel jack since
it's not directly connected to a battery?

[beagleboard] GPIO Edge

2014-03-04 Thread Dorian Levy
If setting /sys/class/gpio/gpioxx/edge creates an interrupt in the
/proc/interrupts file, why is there no event file associated with it? What
is the best way to use a gpio pin to count the number of times a switch is
toggled? I really need to do it on two separate pins in order to ensure two
motors are spinning at the same rate.

usb was fixed in v3.13.x, so no external patches are required, so just
compare your config with:

Was there not a full stack trace? I guess we could start to look at the
timers.js source to see why it was looking for 'uncaughtException'
handlers, but I suspect you'll be happier if we just remove the source of
the exception.

So if I build a uImage and load it directly from u-boot and run it with:

then the kernel boots and I can get a command prompt. The USB phy is not

[beagleboard] USB with kernel 3.13.5-bone5

2014-03-04 Thread lee
I recall USB support being limited with kernel 3.8, but I'm using Debian

3.13 be working properly (hotplug, etc.), or is it still a little rough? I

[beagleboard] Beaglebone Black, SDR, recording and processing

2014-03-04 Thread hopworks . droid
I apologize for the vague request for information, but I have a specific
task in mind for the beaglebone black and I haven't been able to find
enough info via google searches to convince me that the task is possible.

I do not have a BBB yet because of the supply shortage. I am getting one
anyway as I search for a an adequate linux computer of this type for a
centralized solution for data logging and control via web interface of all
my wireless MCU projects.

What I can already do is tune to my favorite FM radio shows manually using
my NooElec TV28T v2 USB DVB-T & RTL-SDR Receiver, RTL2832U & R820T Tuner,
MCX Input on my Windows XP machine. There is nothing automated about the
setup, but I get the quality I want and thought I could build around that.

Ideally, I want to script the whole process after moving it to a Linux
platform. Tune to a frequency at a given time, enable noise reduction with
parameters, record the audio, encode to a MP3 192kbps stereo file, rinse
and repeat. If I can control the RTL-SDR completely from the command line
I'll be happy. I can jump through the other hoops myself through more
research.

So I guess what I need to know (from someone that has done something like
this) is...
Is it possible?
What is the best distro for this? Ubuntu seems heavy.
Should I look for another piece of SDR hardware?
Links to tutorials, datasheets, project pages, blogs, etc. I will read them
all!!
Not necessarily related - Is it better to connect a USB drive for the OS
and storage? I do that now with my RPi.

I was able to connect my RTL-SDR usb to my raspberry pi and stream the
output to a client on my wired and wireless LAN. The RPi wasn't powerful
enough to record the decoded audio or encode it to MP3, at least not that I
have read.

If I can do this with the BBB, I can build a dedicated device around it and
finally put to rest the need my wife and I have for an automated solution
to archive our favorite radio shows.

Thank you for tolerating my long-winded request for more information!! I
can't wait to get my hands on one of these and start PLAYING in code!!!

With utmost respect...
Gary Rubin [hop]

Don¹t load the HDMI device tree overlay and then all GPIO remain in their
reset state which means all GPIO are defined as an input.

Hi Chintan

Thks for the reply. I assume that when you say Linux, you mean Ubuntu
Linux 13.10? Since posting this question, I have switched to Ubuntu 13.04,
console only. I installed CUPS and it works fine. However I have not been
able to find drivers for my 2 printers, an HPLJ 1012 and a Lexmark S400.
For the HP, there was a semi compatible driver that I am using and that
lets me print from the BBB but I can't print from Windows. Workaround: I
print to a pdf file on the BBB. When that file gets created, a script is
triggered to print the file and move it into an archive directory. Works
fine. However I would love to find a driver for the USB connected Lexmark.

[beagleboard] LCD/VGA driver for BBB on 3.8.13-40

2014-03-04 Thread porkupan
Hi,

I am running the RobertCNelson's Ubuntu image with 3.8.13-bone40.1 kernel.
The device is a BBB "clone" with LCD to VGA hookup via ADV7125 video
encoder. Should be somewhat roughly equivalent to an LCD cape. The
customer requirement was to support DVI-I, so analog output was needed to
satisfy.

It seems that by default there is no signal on the LCD pins, only the HDMI.
I tried disabling the HDMI drivers, and enabling one of the LCD7 overlays
(they don't seem to be able to co-exist, one must be disabled for the other
to be enabled):

kms_force_mode=video=LVDS-1:1024x768M@60
optargs=capemgr.disable_partno=BB-BONELT-HDMI,BB-BONE-EMMC-2G,BB-BONELT-HDMIN
capemgr.enable_partno=BB-UART1,BB-I2C1,BB-BONE-LCD7-01:00A2:8

This seems to somewhat work (the VGA monitor gets signal), except there is
support for *800x480* resolution only:

# xrandr -d :0
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 800 x 480, maximum 2048 x 2048

Is there a default setting I can change to allow for a wider range of

the LCD output by not loading the HDMI drivers? Can I affect/force another
resolution?

Thanks!

Brilliant, thank you! That's just what I needed to get me going in
the right direction. I'd been wondering how to read the raw values
directly using Python and hadn't realised that the obvious way to do
it is to use Python's file reading ability, no need for system() calls
or anything nasty like that.

I can bin all the IO libraries now, much happier doing it direct.

Thanks again.

OK, I found out what was misleading me. The ADC values that I'm
seeing are the BBB's "non raw" ones which are scaled to be (as I
guessed) the voltage in mV.

However I can find very little guidance on how to read the actual raw
values, especially from Python. I want to scale the values myself and
using the already scaled 0-1800 values would mean I'm losing a bit of
accuracy.

Can anyone point me at some Python (or even C if you like) code to
read the real, raw, values?

[beagleboard] boot from SD or boot on BBB - flawed thinking?

2014-03-04 Thread Eric Palmer
I need more space than is available on the BBB. I will be using wheesy 7.2
Debian (unless there are reasons to use another linux) and have installed
wheezy on the BBB and also have a boot from SD.

Should I consider just booting from the SD card and changing it to 2
partitions and extend the rootfs from the 2nd partition. Or should I boot
from the BBB and just add space via the SD card.

I have seen instructions for converting a SD boot card to 2 partitions and
extending the 2nd partition to be part of the rootfs. I have not seen
examples of just using a bank SD card for more space.

I'm thinking if I just boot from the sd card maybe there will be some speed
considerations but everything I install will be on that card right? So I
can move that card to another BBB or even duplicate the SD card should I
want more than one BBB to use the same software.

Help me understand how my thinking is flawed or not.

Thanks

[beagleboard] ADC inputs - are they *really* 12-bit?

2014-03-04 Thread cl
I am reading voltages on AIN0 and AIN1, the voltage on the pins is
almost exactly 0.9 volts, I have measured it quite carefully with a
multimeter and this is the voltage I would expect given the dividers
I'm using.

The raw value from the ADC is 896 (plus or minus a count or two). It
really is reading the voltage as, if I increase or decrease it a
little, the reading goes up and down.

However this means that the ADC actually has a full scale reading of
only around 1800 for 1.8 volts, that's not a 12-bit ADC it's closer to
an 11 bit one.

Is the ADC set up so that the reading actually represents the voltage
(i.e. 1800 is 1.8 volts)?

Anyway I think the specification misrepresents the ADC accuracy.

First try dd'ing this image to the microSD:

Just to be safe, hold down the boot button before poweron..

After a minute or so, try ssh'ing...

It's not appearing on my network at all, I use nscan or arp-scan to
see what's there as I have quite a lot of things (like a Raspberry Pi,
an Onkyo receiver and some printers) which aren't always that easy to

I'm beginning to think I may have a bad micro SD card because it came

I've ordered some new micro SD cards which will hopefully arrive

It's setup to get an ip from an dhcp.. So try..

(eth)
ssh ubuntu@arm
ssh ubuntu@arm.local

(usb)
ssh ubuntu@192.168.7.2

or look at your router and find the ip it was given..

On first boot it can take up to a minute as the ssh keys are generated.

[beagleboard] Ubuntu 13.10 image doesn't seem to enable ethernet - should it?

2014-03-04 Thread cl
I have written a Ubuntu image to my 32Gb micro SD card, it's the one
contained in ubuntu-13.10-console-armhf-2014-02-16.tar.xz. I used the
script that comes from the tar file to write the files to the micro SD
and it all seemed to work OK.

However although it *seems* to boot OK from the micro SD I can't
connect to the BBB using ssh as I can if I boot from the default
Angstrom Linux in the emmc.

Should this work or doesn't the Ubuntu image enable the ethernet? Or
doesn't it do a proper search for DHCP server etc.?

I don't really want to have to fire up the whole 'local user' side of
the BBB (mini HDMI, keyboard, mouse, etc.) just to get it working for
remote command line use as it's the remote command line I will always
be using in practice.

[beagleboard] BBB LED sequence on power up and diagnostic meanings

2014-03-04 Thread cl
I'm sure I read somewhere the default meanings of the four user LEDs
on the BBB, in particular the sequence as the system is powered up but
for the life of me I can't find it now.

Also I believe there are some diagnostic indications from the LEDs.

Can someone point me at a description please.

I had! The image hadn't got written to the microSD card at all - oops!

I've started another thread on the ongoing symptoms/diagnosis.

[beagleboard] Re: Cross Compile Qt on BBB issue

2014-03-04 Thread Franck freedev
Thanks for you help.
Well I compiled tslib directly on the BBB..

So I tried something else..
I compiled it on my PC desktop with the cross tool chain I used to compile
my kernell (provide with my file system arm-hf:
http://www.armhf.com/index.php/boards/beaglebone-black/#precise ) and so I
did this:

*./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc*

*make ARCH=arm
CROSS_COMPILE=/home/ana/Téléchargements/BBB/gcc-linaro-arm-linux-gnueabihf-4.8-2013.10_linux/bin/arm-linux-gnueabihf-*

and copy all files in the "good" directories on the BBB . I mean all needed
*.la and *.so in /usr/lib/ts and the all needed binaries like _s_calibrate
in /usr/bin .. and I copy also tslib directory with source files (with all
*.o thats also seems to be needed) .,

and now I have this error message:

*ts_calibrate.o: file not recognized: File format not recognized*

*collect2: ld return 1 exit statuts*

Really I don't know what to do now...

I'm trying to get 3.10.18 running, and with this option already set as
indicated I get "unable to find transceiver" and "can't get PHY device" in
syslog, both with ehci. So is there any news on this ?

Thanks,
