2014-07-17 Thread bremenpl
Hello there,
I am using latest Debian on my bbb:

Distributor ID:Debian
Description:Debian GNU/Linux 7.6 (wheezy)
Release:7.6
Codename:wheezy

I have compilled a test program on my PC using arm-linux-gnueabi-g++-4.7
and it works perfectly well on my Raspberry pi. When i try to run this
program on bbb what i get is this message:

root@beaglebone:/home/debian/testy# ./bcm_test
./bcm_test: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

I did a system update and ugrade. I then installed libstdc++6-4.7-dev but
this havent helped. When i try to apt-get install libstdc++ i get this
message:

For development purposes, don¹t use SDCards. Rather use NFS to mount a
rootfs on your desktop.

In the field, use a read only rootfs and create a separate partition for
storage. Flash has to erase a block before writing a byte. If you have a
logging application, create a buffer in ram which is the size of your flash
erase block and write data to buffer and only write the buffer to disk when
the buffer is full. Alternatively, use a power fail detection circuitry and
only write to SDCard on power failure. There are a lot of techniques like
this that prolong the life of flash.

Actually John, I've been having that exact problem !

How does 'wear leveling' work ?

I have been using an external USB key as temp storage.

Flash has a finite number of writes so with wear leveling, you want to have
a much free space as possible to prevent flash failure. If it is the same
price, always get the bigger one ;-)

16GB is about the same price as 8GB. At Amazon, 16GB class 10 is about $8.

You probably want about 8GB class 10 for sure.

I don’t know if there is a maximum size of uSD card.

The class 4 uSD cards aren’t very reliable.

[beagleboard] PyBBIO 0.9

2014-07-17 Thread Jason Kridner
Pulled this off of Alex's blog at
http://www.alexanderhiam.com/uncategorized/pybbio-update-version-0-9/:

With the help of Rekha Seethamraju , a GSoC
2014

 student, PyBBIO has gained a bunch of cool new features.
SPI

PyBBIO finally has SPI support! It provides an Arduino-style API with some
extra features, letting you use both the SPI0 and SPI1 modules. See the SPI
documentation for more
info.
ADT7310

There is a new library for the ADT7310

SPI
temperature sensor, including interrupt based support for its programmable
over-/under-temperature thresholds. More info on the wiki page
.
Rotary Encoder

A driver for the AM335x’s built-in eQEP modules was recently added to the
official BeagleBone Debian images, and PyBBIO now has a library that uses
it to get input from up to 3 rotary encoders. See theRotaryEncoder
documentation .
Phant Support

Just recently, SparkFun announced their IoT data logging service phant at
data.sparkfun.com. PyBBIO now includes a PhantStream library, which is able
to post data to and pull data from phant streams. Documentation here
.
Optimization

One of the first improvements Rekha made to PyBBIO was to move all file I/O
based interfacing with kernel drivers to C extension. That means there is
less latency when communicating with kernel drivers, which is a core part
of all the IO functionality.
License Change

As of version 0.9, PyBBIO has dropped the Apache 2.0 license and is now
released under the MIT license.
Bug fixes

Among a host of minor bugs getting squashed, we found and fixed an issue
where attachInterupt() was always causing an immediate false interrupt the
first time it was called in a program.
Installation

PyBBIO 0.9 is now officially released
 on the pypi.python.org
repository, meaning it can now be installed with pip! See the install
instructions
 for more
info.

Re: [beagleboard] SPI clock P9_22

2014-07-17 Thread Guy Grotke
The SPI module gets a clock of 48 MHz from the clock tree. You might be
able to work with that frequency, but I know you can get it to work at
48/3 (16 MHz), because I do every day. I have read somewhere
experimenters could not get it to work at 48/2 (24 MHz). I set my speed
on the fly using an ioctl call in my c program:

ret = ioctl(fd,SPI_IOC_RD_MAX_SPEED_HZ, &speed);
if (ret== -1)
pabort("can't get max speedhz");

Re: [beagleboard] Beaglebone SPI

2014-07-17 Thread Guy Grotke
It's not a quirk of the driver, that you have to set SPI_CLK as an input
even when the Sitara is master: It's the hardware. The SPI puts the
SPI_CLK out for its MOSI data, but it needs the SPI_CLK to clock in its
MISO data from the slave. The bit that you are calling "input" does not
make the pin input: It activates the rx hardware. It can still be
driven as an output with the RX_ACTIVE bit turned on. You need to do
that even when you run the SPI hardware directly without the Linux driver.

Getting the SPI Master running is very easy. You do need to get the
pinmux set so the right pins are available. Then:

#include

// open it:
fd = open(device, O_RDWR);
if (fd < 0)
pabort("can't open SPI device");

//Set up the mode, speed, bits/word, etc. using ioctl calls:
// spi mode
ret = ioctl(fd,SPI_IOC_WR_MODE, &mode);
if (ret== -1)
pabort("can't set spi mode");

Then you can use a struct spi_ioc_transfer and ioctl() calls to do reads
or write.

With this platform, I am able to develop application for LAN transmission.

For SPI interface I have followed

I have to use SPI0. I am able to reach properly upto the step of
compiling & running the spidev_test code. Following are my questions

  1.Does the preloaded Angstrom has SPI device built in the

Yes, SPI is included in the Angstrom kernel.

  2. Will the gcc libraries compile the SPIdev_test code? I
 am getting ‘undefined error for SPI_TX_QUAD’ and many more which I
 am finding defined in spi.h which is not in gcc include. Can I
 simply copy spi.h file into the include directory and compile?

Where did you get spidev.c from? You must use the same source as the

version of the kernel you are using.

  3.With reference to the below segment in the .dts file,
 sclk is mentioned as input. However, I would like BBB to be master

No, this a "quirk" with the spi driver, the clock is set as INPUT but it
will also OUTPUT on the pin.

12.0x15c 0x10  /* spi0_cs0, OUTPUT_PULLUP | MODE0 */

13.  >;

14.  };

15.  };

16.  };

4. The pin mapping file shows that the SPI pins are mapped to 84,…..
How to verify that it has been correctly mapped to the processor pin number.

This data can be found in the am335x TRM; you have to find the pinctrl
register in the TRM and then match the offset 0x150 to the table and
double check that it is SPI.

  Request help for these trivial questions.

  Thanks

This is possible as long as you use an resistor divider because the maximum
analog voltage must not exceed 1.8 volts.

I¹m also confused. I recall working on TFTP boot/NFS rootfs early in the
v3.8 kernel and I had to remove both the initrd reference in bootz and
also compile the kernel without initrd support. If I didn¹t do this, the
kernel boot would hang. I have just rebuilt u-boot with your latest patch
and I used your V3.15.5-bone5 kernel together with your proposed uEnv.txt
and it works perfectly. This is very nice. Thank you for making this so
much easier. Excellent work.

One change I¹m going to make is change the uboot mount to my tftp folder
so when I update the kernel, it updates the kernel/dtbs on my tftp folder
and not on the MMC BOOT partition.

Well, that was the image I was using, so I reflashed it and now it working

The mostly part is the campus uses enterprise authentication, so I'm still
not able to connect, but at least I can see the access points now.

I'm heading home where the wifi is much simpler. I hope it works there.

BB-XM has 1.8V voltage level for IO, but Atmega can support either 3.3V or
5V. You can get a USB-Uart cable and connect a USB part to XM, UART part to
Atmega. Enjoy

Jay,

Try using just -opengl instead of -opengl es2. I did it and configure output

My /use/include had a GL/ directory but no GLES/ or GLES2/.

I don't need to change to clock speed when the system its running. I want
to change it before and then run the system.
Using somthing like this:
import Adafruit_BBIO.GPIO as GPIO
import time
GPIO.setup("P9_22", GPIO.out)
GPIO.setclock("P9_22", 64000)  #and here 64000 = 64 khz
GPIO.output("P9_22",GPIO.HIGH)

I found this link helpful when making services:

It's possibly an order of operations thing. You can have the service run
last with Type=idle in the Service section.

[beagleboard] Re: Cross-Compiling Qt5 on Beaglebone Black with OpenGL

2014-07-17 Thread Jay Cady
Don: I'm unsure of what you mean by using arch-linux arm. Can you explain
how I would do this?

Aswin: I'm actually not sure if the touchscreen works with the Qt5
installation yet. The touchscreen is definitely functioning with the
image, but I haven't been able to do any tests yet. If I can get it
working with OpenGL, I'll let you know.

Ashwin: A lot of the errors you get in configuring Qt from source are
normal. They just indicate that it tried to build those modules because
you didn't explicitly say to exclude them, but they don't exist. You can
suppress them by passing -no arguments with the module that is giving you
the issue when configuring (i.e. -no-sql-mysql). It doesn't matter much
because if everything else is still good, it will still configure
successfully and just disable those modules.

You could run your program in a screen (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/)
or byobu (http://byobu.co/) session, which will stay alive after your putty
got disconnected. Both could be easily apt-get installed on BBB debian. I
prefer byobu myself.

And if you start your python program @reboot from crontab, you could pipe
the output to a file (program >> outputfilename). You could use "tail -f
 outputfilename" to monitor the output when you connect with putty.

It's wicd, when it takes hold of eth0, you can't use it for wlan0..

Your device (wlan0) should show up under

/sbin/ifconfig -a

I usually just put wlan0 in /etc/network/interfaces

[beagleboard] Wifi connection porblem on Beaglebone Black

2014-07-17 Thread Cristian Mitu
Hello guys,

I have managed to install Debian wheezy 7.5 on my BBB. I have gotten most
of everything to work but i am having problems with the wifi connection. I
am using an Asus N13 that has the RTL8192 chipset so it is sported by my
deiban version, the drivers are already installed.
I modified the interfaces script form /etc/networks to enable wlan0 and
inserted the respective user and pas for the modem i was connecting on. I
did ifup wlan0 and the first time it worked fine it connected and i pinged
google.com and it worked. But the second time when i reset and did ifup
wlan0 again it started tying to connect but could not get past DCHODISCOVER
and didn't establish a connection. Next i tried with a different modem and
modified the interfaces again. Same story first time worked the next times
after that couldn't connect.

After that i tried enabling the auto wlan0 line in the interfaces script so
that it would do this on boot. This seemed to work for the first two times
but today i am having yet again the same problem. I managed just a few
minutes ago to get the connection up and running yet again ( i don't know
how though it just worked) and this time i checked to see what exactly it
connected to:

DHCPOFFER from 192.168.1.1
DHCPACK from 192.168.1.1

Now unfortunately i don't know how these ip addresses work but i know that
192,168,7.2 is the address i use to connect to the BBB when i do SSH form
terminal and 192.168.7.1 is my computer (at least as far as i understand).
So i do not know if it is getting internet through the usb cable or the
wifi. To be sure i disabled my wifi on the computer and also unplugged my
ethernet cable so i shouldn't be getting internet form anything. I rebooted
the BBB and i managed to connect again to wifi. Also to check i did
ifconfig and got the following output :

>From the looks of it usb0 should be my connection to the PC sinc the Inet
addr is 192.168.7.2 , wlan0 is transmitting and recieving. But i don't know
exactly , i am a noob at these things.

The problem is that i do not know why it sometimes doesn't work. The modem
i am connecting to has full signal so i don't think that is the problem.
The pass and user have been checked so it should be fine. What i have
suspicion for is the power supply. I am using a 4.5V 1A power supply. Most
of the times it works with the wifi connected but about 3 times it happened
that the whole board just shut down by itself after boot.

I thank you in advance for your responses and sory for the long post i just
had to fill you in so it is more easy to see the problem.

[beagleboard] Re: Cross-Compiling Qt5 on Beaglebone Black with OpenGL

2014-07-17 Thread ashwin . space2000
Hi,

I am facing the same problem too. However, missing gl2.h is not the only
error I am seeing. There are other similar errors for mysql.h, oci.h etc.
I am using a the kernel version that supports SGX and was able to run a
demo program. I do not see gl2.h anywhere in /usr/include directory. Please
update if you find out any solution.

Thanks,
Ashwin

Re: [beagleboard] debian 2014-07-16

2014-07-17 Thread William Hermans
Robert, I saw someone mention something about misconfiguration ( for NFS ).
John, and I both we're posting on that topic, but I do not remember which
post it was. Mainly it was two options, but again which two . . .I do not
recall.

I've been using 3.8.x since I started last year, and it has always worked.
I've also doubled checked all NFS related settings, until my most recent
compile. They've all worked.

Also I'm not sure iSCSI is needed much any more. I toyed with it last year
in hopes of getting a Netboot iSCSI setup, but NFS performance on this
little board truly rocks.

[beagleboard] How to keep Python pgm running if putty disconnects ???

2014-07-17 Thread jaymerjaymer
I'm using a BBB Debian (2014-03-27) and I monitor temps with a Python
prrogram.
Currently, while developing, I access the BBB from a local PC via Putty.
Various things happen which disconnect my PC session - this morning a
dialog box said "A software error cause the connection to unexpectedly
close" (or something similar) and temps were not logged for about 4 hours.
In the future, I plan to post some "keep alive" timestamp and check that
from another machine which will alert me if the monitor box stops
posting... but thats another issue.

My question is: How can I have a session that runs on the BBB --- that I
can connect to if I want to see it's progress - AND will always be running
regardless of a remote session?
I'm sure I could launch the Python pgm at bootup, or crontab, but I don't
know how I could see output from that session.

It might be that I don't really need to see the output continually - as
I've become accustomed to via the Putty window. Thats just a comfort
issue.
If I wanted to see recent temps, I'm sure I could write another Python pgm
to analyze the log file and show me recent data.

Your ideas appreciated.
thx
jaymer...

[beagleboard] custom cape i2c bus

2014-07-17 Thread johan . korten
I managed to make my own cape (for two XBee modules). It works very well
(even sending between the two modules and to the third one on the
computer), but:

if I use node ./eeprom.js

I suspect that my cape is expected to be connected to the fourth (or third
if you start counting at 0) i2c bus:

/sys/bus/i2c/drivers/at24/3-0057/eeprom instead of
/sys/bus/i2c/drivers/at24/1-0057/eeprom

So should I fix that in my cape (my cape is default at
/sys/bus/i2c/drivers/at24/1-0057
but can be configured to go from /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/at24/1-0054 ..
/sys/bus/i2c/drivers/at24/1-0057)

Apart from that, I managed to program the eeprom and get it working, but
since it uses UART 2 and UART 5 I needed to change /boot/uboot/uEnv.txt to
get that working (BBB Rev B so that is why I needed to
change /boot/uboot/uEnv.txt instead of /media/BEAGLEBONE/uEnv.txt), but do
I need to supply that with my final version somewhere or is it enough to
put that in the manual?

Sincerely,
Johan

Excuse me, may I ask that PRU can be used beyond linux system clock?
Because I need to synchronize my BBB with ourter PTP(precision time

Is this the "console" or "lxde"... As the 'console' doesn't include
any firmware for wifi either.. But stick with Atheros based usb

[beagleboard] Using USB WIfi adapter on Debian 16-July-2014 image

2014-07-17 Thread Mark A. Yoder
Is there an easy way to use a Wifi adapter on Debian? My definition of
easy is that you plug it in and it works.

I've searched the web and have found several solutions that involve
installing kernel modules, but I don't want to go that route.

I've tried several USB Wifi adapters this morning. *lsusb *finds them, but
*wicd-curses* reports "No wireless networks found.", but
there are many in the area.

[beagleboard] inaccuracy issue of clock_nanosleep() with Debian

2014-07-17 Thread sun19920218
I use BeagleboneBlack with Debian, kernel v3.15, and I want to implement an
accurate timer on my BBB.
I use clock_nanosleep() to wait for 1 second. However, it always turns to
be 1 second and 100~120 microsecond delay. (I measured clock_nanosleep()
between clock_gettime() and with oscilloscope.)

I also run linuxPTP (a software that adjusts system clock, CLOCK_REALTIME,
to synchronize linux system with PTP.) to synchronize my BBB.

I have no idea how to improve it, should I change linux to real-time linux?
(Xenomai or RobertCNelson's patch for linux)
or is there another way (such as software, codes, etc) to get more accuracy
timer? (under 1us delay.)

Thanks!

Re: [beagleboard] enabling the BBxM to start in 'ro' mode

2014-07-17 Thread Leonardo Gabrielli
Thank you. Could you post here the scripts (or send me them to me?). I fear
the problem is not with the script but with the need of creating a initrd
image with aufs to allow for temporary storage of information on the RAM,
as it is done with Live CDs.

Would mounting rootfs read-only be possible without compromising
functioning of the system?
I'm sure there must be someone expert out there...

Yes, SPI is included in the Angstrom kernel.

Where did you get spidev.c from? You must use the same source as the
kernel; if you use a newer source it may not compile with the older
version of the kernel you are using.

No, this a "quirk" with the spi driver, the clock is set as INPUT but it
will also OUTPUT on the pin.

This data can be found in the am335x TRM; you have to find the pinctrl
register in the TRM and then match the offset 0x150 to the table and
double check that it is SPI.

Re: [beagleboard] Measuring a BBB's own supply voltage

If you added an external power measurement device that is read via one of
the serial ports. That would only measure the power of the code that is
reading the power device. I am not sure if you are looking for na average
or just a single point in time.

Power button has an internal pullup inside the TPS65217C to the DC in
rail. You do not need the external pullup.

[beagleboard] Enable LDO2 on TPS65217C PMIC

2014-07-17 Thread Michael Doherty
I'm trying to use an external button to control power on/off on BBB. I
currently have a momentary button wired to pwr_btn and pulled up high via
3.3V pin. The issue is that 3.3v is not enabled by default in sleep mode. I
have no problem pressing the button to pull ground and shut down the
beaglebone, but then when it goes to sleep, 3.3v (LDO2) rail shuts off
which pulls the pwr_but ground which then immediately triggers power on
again.

How would I enable LDO2 in sleep mode? I read through the user guild
(http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps65217c.pdf) and couldn't find any
answers.

Neverthless try the below link.

'find' can do it all:-

find / -name conman

It'll take a fair old time to do it though.
