[SlimDevices: Beta] Adding new music, can no longer just browse Music Folder?

2009-11-11 Thread Mark Lanctot

Version: 7.5.0 - r29204 @ Mon Nov 9 02:03:30 PST 2009
Operating system: Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Platform Architecture: 586
Perl Version: 5.10.0 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

To add one or two new tracks, I used to be able to just browse to them
by viewing them in Music Folder. These would get added to the database,
although the album art wasn't incorporated until a full rescan (fair
enough).

However this no longer seems to work. I can view and even play them in
Music Folder but they are no longer added to the database as soon as I
view them.

Is this a consequence of the new code that detects changes to the
library, making what I'm trying to do obsolete, or is this unintended
behaviour?

Thank you.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Adding new music, can no longer just browse Music Folder?

2009-11-11 Thread Mark Lanctot

It does work in 7.4.2:

Version: 7.4.2 - r29150 @ Wed Nov 4 04:00:23 PST 2009
OS: Debian - EN - utf8
Platform: x86_64-linux
Perl Version: 5.10.0 - x86_64-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.83-0ubuntu3

Since it will be replaced by dynamic rescanning code, no problem then.

Thanks Andy!

[SlimDevices: Beta] Does 7.4 parse RadioTime OPML differently than 7.3.3?

2009-09-10 Thread Mark Lanctot

Reason I ask - I have a RadioTime stream that works fine in 7.3.3 but
won't work in 7.4. Error: No items found in playlist.

The URL is:

http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s89692partnerId=16

And you may find the content weird unless you share similar interests
to mine. :-)

I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but I found this through
Internet Radio - Local and added it to my Favorites, I didn't go
directly through RadioTime. It won't play in 7.4 regardless of if I
play it from Favorites or through Internet Radio - Local.

It should be noted that this is through two beta units (Radio and
Touch) but also through desktop SqueezePlay. I've been putting off
reporting this, I always think the my radio stream won't play
complaint is so trivial, but given that it's been consistently like this
for months and 7.4 is coming up I can't put it off any longer.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Does 7.4 parse RadioTime OPML differently than 7.3.3?

2009-09-10 Thread Mark Lanctot

OK, done, thanks Andy:

https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13955

I've done some more research and 7.3.3 vs. 7.4 isn't relevant - it
won't work in any Squeezeplay-based device (Controller, Radio, Touch,
Desktop Squeezeplay) but works fine in IP3K-based devices, though I've
only tested two Booms.

I filed it under Squeezeplay - Networking.

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 - No music library configured

2009-08-06 Thread Mark Lanctot

Interestingly I can't report my version, the Control Panel applet and
the web interface no longer list it. It's the most recent one though,
28080, and it's running on Windows XP 32 bit.

Anyway each time I update, I can't rescan. I keep getting a No music
library configured notification under Server Status - Music Scan
Details or in the web page, Settings - Information - Library Statistics.
I do have a music library configured in Music Library - Music Source
though.

I usually have to select the clean cache option in the Control Panel to
rescan.

Should I file a bug?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Detecting new server version?

2009-07-29 Thread Mark Lanctot

Version: 7.4 - r27832 @ Mon Jul 27 08:45:52 PDT 2009
Server HTTP Port Number: 9000
Operating system: Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Platform Architecture: 586
Perl Version: 5.10.0 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread

I see 7.4 is up to 27885 now. Some versions of Squeezebox Server would
detect and download a new version, indicating one was available through
the Control Panel - Advanced - Software Updates. I believe some even
had a popup indicating a new version was ready.

However I have not had a popup or indication that a new server version
is ready since I installed this version. Should I be expecting one or
do I download it manually?

Thanks.

 Hi all,

Just attempting to have a look at Squeezeplay for the first time.
Since I ran into the bug described above by kesey in trying to use the

For the record, and since - AFAICT - it appears that neither the Wiki
 (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlay_On_Ubuntu_7.10) nor
the README.linux file are up to date, I was able to get a functional
build (of 7.3-4744) after having installed the following packages (and
 their dependencies):

 * build-essential
 * flex
 * bison
 * subversion
 * cramfsprogs
 * automake
 * fakeroot
 * libtool
 * libncurses5-dev
 * gettext
 * libssl-dev
 * libpng12-dev
 * libjpeg62-dev
 * libexpat1-dev
 * libreadline5-dev
 * libx11-dev
 * xorg-dev
 * portaudio19-dev

I am running Kubuntu 8.04.2. Note that I didn't test that all of these
were strictly necessary. Note also that some of the packages described
 in bug #10313 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10313) don't
seem to be necessary (libportaudio-doc, libportaudio-ocaml,
 libportaudio-ocaml-dev, portaudio19-doc and libportaudio0), but not
having portaudio19-dev resulted in something that built and ran but
didn't have audio (obviously) and, for some odd reason, wouldn't
connect to the server. Now it seems to be working properly (and looks
 fairly nice, IMHO).

Nice work, but did you see that there's a .deb? :-)

check. I will try and get a bug opened on it.

Perhaps that's it (video driver) because I have other programs that

It seems to me like a problem with my configuration or some weird
software conflict/interaction that is very difficult to track down.

YES! Finally, I believe you're seeing exactly what I am (although SP

I've documented it on and off but it appears I'm the only one. It has

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 - 24756 doesn't start, Windows XP SP2

However when I start SC from the command line I get this:

and SC doesn't start.

24751 works perfectly.

This may well be impossible, but thanks in advance, just in case.
 Eric

You're going the wrong way. Any SB acting as a bridge will bridge the
wireless network to the wired network - not the other way around. This
means the SB is connected wirelessly and uses its wireless card to
connect any devices attached to its wired port.

It does not mean that other wireless devices can access the SB and send
traffic down its wired port, it's the other way only.

A wireless bridge is not the same as a wireless access point.

[SlimDevices: Beta] SqueezePlay executable problems

Well I just installed 7.3 on my Linux server (went without a hitch!) and

it's still having the same problem as I've reported here:

I could post logs, but last time I checked they seemed to be the same
as I posted at the start of that thread:

Now, I seem to be the only one with this problem, so if you want me to
I'll shut up about it. :-)

It would be nice to be able to use and test SP like so many here have
been doing for so long but it doesn't seem to be in the cards for me...

- every time I start it afterwards, it freezes at the Free Your Music
screen. Sometimes the command window will open and close.

- sometimes when I move the cursor to the SP screen it remains as an
hourglass, sometimes it changes to the proper black pointer

- if I click anywhere in the SP screen, the title changes to
SqueezePlay Beta - Not Responding and I have to kill the process

I fear it's some dumb Windows conflict. The firewall should let
traffic through and I can definitely see the server - SoftSqueeze works
fine on this computer. I do notice that sometimes my wireless software
(Intel PROSet/Wireless 11.5.1.2 for Intel 2200 BG) drops the connection
and at first I thought it and SP were conflicting, but it often drops
the connection when it runs out of CPU resources.

It's not the latest and fastest machine but it ought to work: Pentium M
1.5 GHz, 512 MB RAM.

Could it be that because it doesn't complete setup after installation
it's in an inoperative state?

[SlimDevices: Beta] SqueezePlay - how intensively should we be testing it?

2008-10-08 Thread Mark Lanctot

Should it be reasonably expected to work now, or do the developers want
bug reports?

It's never worked for me. I almost always get the Free Your Music
screen and the startup sound, but usually it locks up at 100% CPU after
that. Once or twice I did get a screen but it didn't look like it was
talking to SC.

I see SP generates logs - looking at these logs it looks like
everything should work - SP even recognizes my connected player names.

But it's that 100% CPU lockup that's preventing anything else from
happening.

It's last night's SP build on Windows XP Pro SP2 with last night's
7.2.1 SC:

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.2.1 - 23448 @ Wed Oct 8 02:06:56 PDT 2008 -
Debian - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 x86_64-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1

Platform Architecture: x86_64-linux

Should I update Windows to XP SP3 or will that not affect this?

If SP is not in an expected-to-work state I don't mind and I'll hold
off any further testing at this point.

What that thread does show, however, is that the problem has existed for
several months, since FW40, yet remains unaddressed. I'm a newbie here
so perhaps it isn't my place to comment, and I appreciate this is beta
software, but it seems strange that there have, presumably, been five
point upgrades since v40 that have addressed various issues, such as
gapless playback, but none has fixed such a fundamental issue as
 complete failure to playback.

Umm, do you really think even a beta would be issued where the player
wouldn't play?

There is some testing.

I've been on 7.1 for months now, Transporter included, updating every
morning. Just once was there an issue - for about 3 days, the web
interface wouldn't come up, but I just reverted back to the last
working version.

I've never had a complete playback failure.

But it IS possible. Strictly speaking, 7.0.2 is beta, 7.1 is alpha.
So yes, one nightly could stop it working - it's unreleased software
made public for testing purposes. If you test it and it doesn't work,
file a bug, this is the point of testing.

However it's simply not true that nightlies have been put out for
months that don't play.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Upgrading TP FW 43, 45, Ethernet appears disconnected error

2008-07-08 Thread Mark Lanctot

I first noticed this when upgrading from FW 40 - 43 and again from 43
- 45.

When the player reboots after updating the firmware, I can't recall
seeing the Logitech logo. The screen remains dark until a Ethernet
appears disconnected error comes on. It's not too serious because the
player comes up normally a few seconds later but it definitely should
not be there and causes a little concern.

My setup: Transporter connected via Ethernet, static IP, latest 7.2
SqueezeCenter nightly running on 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04.

Should I file a bug?

Thanks.

Yes, the SB3 does need the brightness button on an IR remote held down

Trying to get a Debian/Ubuntu problem solved is difficult enough,
trying to get one solved for a 64-bit build only is nigh impossible if

BTW that network test doesn't look all that good. 3000 kbps, all

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] irritating question

2008-02-13 Thread Mark Lanctot

7.0 has been in testing, not unstable state for a week or so now.
Unstable is the new 7.0.1. Other software projects would call 7.0 a
release candidate rather than a beta at this point.

And in regards to why do we have to wait so long - well, there are
pretty massive changes. Everything in the web UI, scanning, SN
integration, synch, plugins and of course the inclusion of the SBC and
the SBR which has necessitated changes in SC from time to time.

The SBC functionality has been largely sorted but the beta testers have
only had their SBRs for a week or two now and there are some tricky
SBC/SBR interactions when setting up the SBR which might be delaying
things a bit.

If you were to see the number of checkins you'd know the developers are
working -feverishly- on it.

Given that the Duet hardware is being manufactured now (the first batch
may already be produced but might have been delayed by weather) the
pressure to get 7.0 released must be pretty intense...

The IP address is the last thing to set, there's a (rather long) DHCP

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Scanner.exe not picking up tags

2008-02-12 Thread Mark Lanctot

It's easy to change over to ID3v2.3 using Mp3tag, and you can do it on
your whole collection in a few minutes.

Follow this: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?Mp3tagGuide , set
Mp3tag to display tag types. You can sort by tag types if you wish,
this will cause all those with APE tags to be grouped together and you
can do the subsequent operations on these files only - but this should
work on files that don't have APE tags as well.

Set Mp3tag to write only ID3v2.3 and to delete only APE tags (and ID3v1
while you're at it). Highlight the affected files and press the save
icon. This writes all tags as ID3v2.3 if they don't already have
these. You should see the tag types change if they didn't contain
ID3v2.3 tags.

Then press the delete tag key. It will then delete all APE tags,
keeping the ID3v2.3 tags you just created.

As we're doing mass retagging here, make a backup first in case things
go wrong. You may want to also test it on a few copied files.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Rescan times - what's going on with Artwork Scan?

[SlimDevices: Beta] Latest SC7 build - settings page won't load

2008-01-14 Thread Mark Lanctot

I wish I could tell you which build it is, but I can't load the settings
page. It's the .deb available today.

My home page seems to load (a little slowly) and display OK, but the
browser indicates that the page is still loading by displaying Waiting
for 192.168.1.8, a 3/4 complete progress bar, and a spinning page load
icon.

The settings page doesn't load at all, I get a new tab but nothing is
displayed.

I'm using Swiftweasel 2.0.0.11 - this is a CPU-optimized build of
Firefox 2.0.0.11. Since this is a rare browser, I also used Firefox
2.0.0.8 32-bit and Firefox 2.0.0.11 64-bit, same results.

The PC viewing the server is Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64, all updates installed,
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2 GB RAM. The SC7 server PC is more moderately
spec'd, AMD Duron 1.2 GHz, 512 MB RAM. The SC7 server is basically idle
while (interestingly) the viewing PC is under light load as it tries to
load the page.

It's the same story on the SC7 server using Swiftweasel and Firefox
trying to load localhost except the processor locks at 100% as it tries
to view the page.

Is there anything I can do to assist debugging? This behaviour
survives an SC restart and a browser restart even after clearing cache.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Static sound on 24bit/96kHz material

2007-12-17 Thread Mark Lanctot

I'm not sure. Yes, RG is not an issue in your case, and having it in
place in the file does nothing. But it does sound like the CPU is
running out of cycles, so...not sure.

However, it's not a bug that can be fixed without a drastic shift of
CPU power to the server (which would entail extensive or total redesign
of the way SS/SC works) or an upgrading of the CPU in the player, which
will happen only with a new design. It's probably enough that the bug
report is there, and if the player becomes powerful enough to handle RG
and the spectrum screensaver simultaneously with 24/96 material, it will
solve your issue provided it's indeed the same problem (and if it isn't,
it should be a different bug report).

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] playing same playlist after stop/restart SC7+ suppress files?

 Hi Mark,
Sorry I guess I was not very clear in my explanation...The playlist
(which is actually my entire library I listen in the random mode) is
still there but I have to click on it after a reboot to make it play.

Playlists consisting of your entire music library so that you can
choose songs at random bog down SC and are unnecessary, try Random
Mix.

I would have liked to have the the music starting automatically after a
reboot as soon as slimserver starts (i.e. without clicking anywhere)
from where it stopped at the time the laptop was turned off.

Check out Settings - Players - Audio - Power On Resume. You can have
it resume play where it left off as soon as you turn the player on,
without you having to press anything in the web interface at all.

As for SC turning the player on and starting play automatically, do you
realize how many irritated users that would cause? :-)

Also why are you starting/stopping SC? Ideally it should be on
constantly.

Last question: Is there any way/plan to modify the tags using SC?

Definitely not, as I indicated, SC will never delete or alter files, by
design. There are much better tools to do this anyway, Mp3tag on
Windows and EasyTAG on Linux.

Umm, yes, so what's your point?

My point is there's no use whining about the quality of beta software
and vowing to go to the competition based on the function of unreleased
pre-production software that changes on a daily basis.

The purpose of beta is to find problems so they can be fixed. It is
clearly a problem if a program isn't smart enough to install over an
existing non-beta release without a user having to reinstall their
 freaking OS.

OK, so did you file a bug so others can fix it? You didn't? Well why
did you install beta software then? Just to complain when it doesn't
work?

I'm just as happy to put 6.5 back on and let you work out the kinks.

If you didn't file a bug then how can anyone work out the kinks?

I have currently SC7 running on Ubuntu gutsy. Everything is working just
fine but I haven't found a way to have SC7 playing the same playlist it
was playing when stopped the day before...Is it possible?

Yes of course, it should always have the same playlist.

Are you updating it every day? Are you rescanning? (I thought the
current playlist survived a rescan now though.)

Have you set a playlist folder and are the permissions set
appropriately? (I don't think the current playlist is saved to this
folder though, but it's worth checking.)

A second thing I am wondering: is it possible to suppress music files of
my computer directly from SC7? (For example, let say I want to
definitely suppress a song currently being played).

Could you define suppress? I'm not sure what you mean.

If you mean delete, no, SC (and SS) will never touch any of your files.
This is by design to prevent an error from wiping your entire music
library.

What you can do is press and hold ADD on the remote to add it to the
Zapped playlist, then delete songs on the Zapped playlist manually.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Updated New Default skin

2007-11-28 Thread Mark Lanctot

I hate to gang up on poor Michael, but I agree with what's being said
here.

With the older blue interface it looked really classy and simple.
It's amazing how just a consistent, professional-looking interface can
make things seem simple.

The current interface looks more complicated even though the
functionality and options are the same. It's the mix of colours, the
mish-mash of various boxes, frames, shapes, buttons. It's more
intimidating-looking, not quite as slick as the blue interface.

And I guess I wasn't the only one thrown off by the whitespace when I
first saw it! Indeed it does look like something didn't load, a cache
issue or something. It looks pretty jarring against the background,
not the slick blending in like the blue interface had.

Don't mean to gang up on you here Michael, but the new interface just
looks more complicated than the older blue one merely due to its
appearance and blend of elements that were meant to enhance but end up
being more busy visually, which leads to an unconscious impression that
SC is complicated.

that the file references in the playlist are invalid, pointing to local

On the 7.0 machine, the remote drive is mounted in /media/music/Music

I suppose if I gave the mount point the same name on the 7.0 machine

Two issues I have with the new skin, which is otherwise fantastic:

- in the right-hand now playing frame, Bitrate is always cut off for
me. Is it my screen resolution? I'm only running 1024X768. See
screenshot.

- when I put an item in now playing, if I delete it using the X icon,
it stays there. It's actually gone though, when I reload the web page
it goes away.

I'm viewing this using SwiftWeasel (Firefox speed-optimized derivative)
2.0.0.7 on 64-bit Ubuntu Linux 7.04. SqueezeCenter is:

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 13909 - Debian - EN - utf8
Server IP address: 192.168.1.8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.45-Debian_1ubuntu3

It's on a brand-new Ubuntu 7.10 install, i386 architecture.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New Default skin

2007-10-19 Thread Mark Lanctot

Whoops, sorry, I forget I'm using a crazy browser.

But I'm getting inconsistent behaviour which is not reproducible for a
bug report. I have two versions of Firefox - Firefox 32-bit (so that I
can see flash) and Firefox 64-bit. Firefox 64 is version 2.0.0.6,
Firefox 32 is 2.0.0.4. Initially the 32-bit rendered with the cut-off
image and the 64-bit rendered fine. Then they were all fine for a few
refreshes, even SwiftWeasel fixed itself. Now all of them are cut
off again?

I'm very confused and I'm not sure what to report.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with fonts. All 3 browsers
use different fonts for some reason. SwiftWeasel is the worst of them
all, the developer has never got the fonts quite right.

Another issue to post: it would be really nice if the initial
SqueezeCenter setup didn't resize the browser window.
