Hi Michael,

In the squeezecenter.log, I don't notice any serious errors, but now
you pointed me to the scanner.log, I do see significant errors,
although I can't place them.

Michael Herger;270877 Wrote:

I ran the command, and got a lot of PERL messages (errors?). So I
included that error log (duck.log), the scanner.log that you asked for
and the server.log (just to be sure).

Unfortunately, I'm not well versed in perl, so assessing what would now
exactly be wrong (either in the perl setup or in the squeezecenter
setup) is difficult. Your help would be appreciated.

With Gentoo-linux, gnome and Firefox, and SC7 (build 20080210), new
Default webinterface, I get very odd artwork behaviour in the Now
Playing field. The CD cover picture shows up way too big (imho),
obscuring the titles. (See attachment 1). Note: the pictures are in a
dedicated file 'cover.jpg' in the filesystem folder where the MP3 files
are.

With a larger picture, the effect is more drastic, especially when
hovering above a title in the invisible list, popping up extra artwork
(see attachment 2).

Using the Fishbone webinterface, all artwork is nicely rescaled to
appropriate size (see attachment 3).

Do I do something wrong, or have I missed an important thing
somewhere?

Great idea, yet I would be careful with the TT stuff. Unfortunately
that is VERY sensitive to syntax errors and you can easily kill your
whole page with a missing ; or END or something and then you have
to clear your template cache and restart the server.. Don't know how
sensitive the new Default Skin is to that with all it's JavaScript but
at least the popup would be dead.
That's nasty as a developer, but if you can crash the frontend with a
malformed comment in a file, hmmm...

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New Default Skin request

KDF: I hear you about the dangers of opening the barn door to
specialized tags. (RATSASS? You guys don't support the RATSASS
tag? What's wrong with you!) So a generic routine for making the
content of unrecognized tags available does seem like a logical way to
go. I had assumed that this tag content would somehow have to end up
in the db, but there are already places in the code where SC grabs
artwork on the fly...extracting it from the source, post
scan...aren't there? So perhaps the scanner wouldn't need to have
support for unrecognized tags, just the web UI.

Pippin: Perhaps the server could just dump the tag contents out to a
client-local temp file and then launch a separate instance of the
browser pointed at that file. Costly (in terms of CPU cycles) and
slow, but that would protect both the main instance of the UI and the
server, wouldn't it? On the other hand, probably too costly on an
iPhone or a 770 or N800.

[SlimDevices: Beta] New Default Skin request

2008-01-30 Thread gharris999

This is strictly a post 7.0 release request, of course:

Andy, in svn 16949, today checked in a change to Queries.pm that causes
big album and track comments to get their own pop-up page in the jive
ui.

I'd love to see something similar in the default web skin...perhaps
something like the pop-up bigger album art that happens when the
mouse is hovered over the player-panel artwork...perhaps a pop-up text
area containing comments content when the mouse is hovered over some
text indicator.

I generally stuff my track comments with some basic minimal composer
info, a URL to the composer's page at Grove Music and with as extensive
a performer's roster as I can stand to document. So, even now, my
comments tags are a bit unwieldy in the web ui. Being able to pop up
all that data with mouse hover would be down-right sexy.

Also, in the future, I'd like to see our allowable metadata tags in
flac files to expand beyond just COMMENT into areas like LYRICS or
LINERNOTES.

I've already started tagging some of my new library additions with
vorbis comments labeled LINERNOTES containing the cd booklet text in
html format. Sometimes, this content is quite extensive. I've got
some LINERNOTES tags now that are weighing in at more than 75k.
Obviously, a scrollable, sizable pop-up window is the right way to
display content like that.

Anyway, before I file an enhancement request, I thought I would solicit
some feed-back on this idea. Anyone have an opinion?

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New default skin search oddity..

2008-01-09 Thread gharris999

OK, updated to SVN 16068. No change in behavior, so perhaps this is
related to my ancient svn install (pre-dates the change from
slimserver to squeezecenter) and the fact that I'm using a system,
non-bundled version of mysqld.

SC7 Settings-Status reports:

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - TRUNK - Red Hat - EN - utf8
Server IP address: 192.168.0.199
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i386-linux-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.45
Platform Architecture: i686-linux
Hostname: slim_menuet.da
Server Port Number: 9000
Total Players Recognized: 3
Cache Folder: /usr/local/slimserver_trunk/server/Cache
Plugin Folders:
/usr/local/slimserver_trunk/server/Slim/Plugin,/usr/local/slimserver_trunk/server/Plugins

Here is what MySQL admin reports about the server's SQL Charsets:

character_set_clientlatin1
character_set_connectionlatin1
character_set_database latin1
character_set_results latin1
character_set_serverlatin1
character_set_systemutf8
collation_connectionlatin1_swedish_ci
collation_database latin1_swedish_ci
collation_serverlatin1_swedish_ci

Perhaps it's time for me to re-groove my server. Assuming that I wipe
the machine clean and install Fedora 8, what's the current favored
method of installing SC7 and then running from the svn code?

In the past, I've installed the (pre-yum) rpm, done a svn co to
download the trunk to a path similar to the rpm's installed path, and
then fixed up the service start script to reference the new path. The
new yum-centric rpms scatter the code around so much that I assume that
it's not a good base to svn on top of. Would you say that is so?

2008-01-09 Thread gharris999

OK, so I edited the /etc/my.cnf file to more closely match the values in
my.tt.

My system variable SQL Charsets are now:

character_set_clientutf8
character_set_connectionutf8
character_set_database utf8
character_set_results utf8
character_set_serverutf8
character_set_systemutf8
collation_connectionutf8_general_ci
collation_database utf8_general_ci
collation_serverutf8_general_ci

Things seem to be behaving better. A Järvi search now returns all
the expected albums. But a Jarvi search also returns all the Järvi
albums. Is this expected? This behavior is fine by me.

Anyway, thanks again, Michael.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New Default skin

2008-01-07 Thread WhaleOil

Sorry to extend this thread still further, but I have a question about
the formatting of the information shown in the 'Now Playing' section at
the top right hand side of the new default skin under SC7 (latest
nightly and all recent versions)

The information given here for the track currently playing seems a bit
strange.

For most tracks the format seems to be (although there are no labels):

Disc-Tracknum. Track (in bold font)
Album (Year)
Composer, Album Artist, Track Artist

however, when the track being played is from a compilation album, the
final line changes to

Track Artist, Composer, Album Artist

For example, I get

1-1. Drive My Car
Rubber Soul (1965)
Lennon/McCartney, The Beatles, The Beatles

and

1-9. Mama
Virgin's 21st Anniversary Sampler (1983)
Genesis, Banks/Collins/Rutherford, Various Artists

I would really prefer the final line of information to simply show the
Track Artist, or at least include some labels to say what the other
information is.

Otherwise the information can just look silly and repetitive, eg

1-4. Ashes to Ashes
Scary Monsters (1980)
David Bowie, David Bowie, David Bowie

In all other places the information looks fine (eg in the Track info in
the left hand pane when proper labels are shown for all of the tag
information).

It it is relevant, I am using iTunes on Mac OSX and see the same
formatting under both Safari and Firefox.

Many thanks for all your work on this - overall the new skin is looking
great.

Using IE 7 the Settings/Advanced page looks a bit odd when sized down a
bit... two lots of vertical scroll bars betwen the frames, overlaying
text, erratic behaviour of menu highlighting etc.

Thanks - change 15821 should fix this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New Default skin

2007-12-29 Thread ModelCitizen

I was wondering if any suggestions for the Home menu of SC7 might be
acceptable. I'm sorry if it's all been gone though before and is a done
deal.

Generally i think that too much functionality is being added to the
home page ansd that what was once a clear, simple and user friendly
page is now becoming increasingly complicated and confused. The
original clarity is being compromised.

An original thrust of the SC7 skin seemed to be to create a simple and
intuitive user interface whilst retaining the powerful functionality
and configurability of the application. This was achieved by ensuring
grouping power-user configuration options in menus that the less
technically adept users might not ever need to access.

I'm mainly speaking about the addition of the OPML browser amd the
direct editing of Favorites.

Both functions are too confusing and unwieldy for the home page,
the OPML browser especially. What is an OPML? I know but would anyone
who uses Windows in default mode (i.e. not showing file extensions)?
Add to this the fact that you can't browse for them and I have no idea
what sort of path to put in to locate them makes this function of
dubious value for your average user on a Windows machine. I feel that
this functionality, if included, needs a fair bit more thought,
especially with respect to the average expected user.

Editing of Favorites, whilst a necessity in my opinion does not sit
well on the home page. You can't edit any other function on the home
page like this so the edit icon on the Favorite title is unexpected and
very easy to miss. Again, I think this editing functionlity is best kept
in Extras. I edit other stuff of a very similar nature (like AlienBBC
menus) from Extras and would expect to find the Favorites editing
facility in the same place.

In the name of simplicity and clarity (and for the expected new users)
I feel that if there was to be any editing possible directly from the
home page it ought to extend only as far as drag and drop of menu
items, allowing the re-ordering of items. And, although I'd personally
like this I'm not dead certain that it's a good idea generally and that
perhaps it might be best if all editing of items on the home page was
confined to Extras (perhaps in the same way as it is possible to
configure the Remote menus, but with drag and drop of course).
-

Two minor things:

1) Is drag and drop going to be implemented on the Remote menus?

2) I'd be happier if Favorites.opml got saved in my Preferences folder.
Currently mine is being saved under my Cache.. so if I delete it I loose
my Favorites (I know it should be saved in Playlists.. and I can't see
why it hasn't, as my playlist folder is writeable, but this seems the
wrong place too).

Oh, you mean that button is direct editing?

So instead of having the Favorites item have a direct link to the edit page,
you'd hide it in Extras?

 1) Is drag and drop going to be implemented on the Remote menus?

In the player settings? That's a good idea. But to make it complete this would
need a lot of work (dragging new items to add, existing to remove them, too).
So I'm not sure this is going to happen in 7.0, or whether we'll just limit it
to sorting. Would be handy.

Or did you mean dragging menus using the remote? ;-)

You might be right. If so, I don't remember turning it on. However, I

Does it have another name in Extras, or is it somewhere else?

Yes exactly, along with all the other things you can edit if you want
to.

I am certain that the user interface should be kept clear and simple
and that, especially cosidering new and less technically savvy users,
the editing functions should be kept entitrely separate (as they have
so far for the majority of editing functions in SC7).

I see no errors. My Playlist folder is on a local drive, is writeable
and is separate from any of my music folders.
I think Favorites is a function of SlimServer and as such should be
kept within it's own settings folder (preferably not the cache for the
reasons above). I don't think of Favorites as a generic playlist and
thnk it belongs it in my Playlists folder (it's not even in the same
file format as my other playlists).

[SlimDevices: Beta] New default skin quirks

I'm finding that I can't delete the topmost entry in the now playing

I think my current server setup may be exhibiting some quirks that

What are the parameters for shuffle?

The shuffle doesn't do a very good jpb of shuffling the deck.
I would be nice to have some tools to shuffle playlists differently.
(random, one song from each album then repeat)

The old UI you could shuffle a newly created playlist multiple times
and then save it. Can't do this in 7.

I'll create a new playlist and then shuffle and 4 tracks from the same
album remain together. You can't shuffle again without going back to
sorted mode first.

It would be nice to be able to create playlists while another was
playing.

Thanks to the poster who pointed out how to turn off album cover art.
On my network SlimServer would frequently pause for long periods while

zero. I am hopeful that turning off this feature will stop that.

Is there a way within the SlimServer settings to turn off cover art by

Can a similar layout as that being used on the song info page be carried
out to the album page? If so, it would be very slick. I'd venture that
those album pages are displayed quite often, while song info pages
relatively rarely.

Artwork (reduced in size, as on the song info page) on the left, with
album artist, album name, genre, and year on the right. Also nice to
have (IMO) would be album duration in minutes:seconds.

Then below, eliminate the redundant album name from each track
listing.

It would also be cool to eliminate the redundant artist name from each
track whenever it's the same as the album artist, but I realize that
may not be easy.

Tried installing Prism and using it with the new UI.

Unfortunately, the left window never loads. (It does with the straight
up firefox browser.)

This is just as (if not more) likely a bug with Prism as it is with the
new AJAX-iness of the new skin, but I thought I'd throw it out there as
something to look at.

(I love the idea of being able to fire up the UI and have it look more

Bad luck for you: the left side is an old-school iframe. The most static,

Two issues I have with the new skin, which is otherwise fantastic:

- in the right-hand now playing frame, Bitrate is always cut off for
me. Is it my screen resolution? I'm only running 1024X768. See
screenshot.

- when I put an item in now playing, if I delete it using the X icon,
it stays there. It's actually gone though, when I reload the web page
it goes away.

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 13909 - Debian - EN - utf8
Server IP address: 192.168.1.8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi

It's on a brand-new Ubuntu 7.10 install, i386 architecture.

2007-10-19 Thread Mark Lanctot

Whoops, sorry, I forget I'm using a crazy browser.

But I'm getting inconsistent behaviour which is not reproducible for a
bug report. I have two versions of Firefox - Firefox 32-bit (so that I
can see flash) and Firefox 64-bit. Firefox 64 is version 2.0.0.6,
Firefox 32 is 2.0.0.4. Initially the 32-bit rendered with the cut-off
image and the 64-bit rendered fine. Then they were all fine for a few
refreshes, even SwiftWeasel fixed itself. Now all of them are cut
off again?

I'm very confused and I'm not sure what to report.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with fonts. All 3 browsers
use different fonts for some reason. SwiftWeasel is the worst of them
all, the developer has never got the fonts quite right.

Another issue to post: it would be really nice if the initial
SqueezeCenter setup didn't resize the browser window.

Yes even a tiny amount of resizing pulls everything into line. Since my

It's not that big of a deal at any rate, since there is hardly ever
more than one page of search results..

Hmm... didn't you say you were using Opera?

I'm testing in Firefox and Opera, the screenshot of the formatting

Opera seemed to have bigger problems with long lists of search results,
resulting in multiple scroll bars.

I'm having some search issues in FF and Opera on Windows (SqueezeCenter

In FF 2.0.0.1 when a long list of search results is returned (try
searching for 'the') the very last one isn't reachable with the scroll
bar (see screenshot).

In Opera 9.2, also with more than one page of results, the entries are
repeated and I get multiple scroll bars.

Shouldn't the plugin entries also be available as tabs or have you

Arrgh... FF? Everything was fine until I noticed that IE7 (but not IE6)
displayed _two_ scrollbars, one of which didn't do anything. Thus I
started fiddling with various settings, until all were fine but Safari.
Some more fiddling later we seem to have broken FF :-(.

Shouldn't the plugin entries also be available as tabs or have you
decided that the only way to access plugin settings is through the

They're available in advanced. But the links in the Extras tabs should be
fixed, too.

In the other skins there is an Extras entry but also a Custom
Browse entry in the menu where you selecting section in the
 SqueezeCenter Settings dialog.

We wanted to clean up the main screen, hiding anything remotely exotic in
the Advanced tab. Whether the plugins will stay there or not is still to

SlimServer is all (and only!) about My Music...I agree 100%!

I appreciate the lack of clutter when I drill down to the My Music
page, though. Is there a url that would link me there directly? -Could-
there be?

OT: Doesn't Microsoft own the trademark -My Music?- They keep it right
next to 'this old patent'

Anyway, I like how the new skin is coming along: thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] New Default skin

2007-10-15 Thread Michael Herger
Michael, would it be possible to add the mixer icons beside each song in
the current playlist section, for example the MusicMagic mm icon ?

I'm sure it's feasible, but I doubt it will be approved by those who have
the powers: the idea is to have a simple and clean GUI by default. (But
then I always wanted to add a hidden feature to allow for more control
buttons anyway ;-)).

The mixer icons are already today available in the current playlist in
 the fishbone skin.

I'll have a look at it.

Do you intend to change the edit playlist page to support drag and drop
 editing?

Having the best support for the new skin in all places is a target. But that
particular page is not a priority for now. Feel free to add this as an
enhancemente request to bugzilla so we don't forget it.

Also, some text entries (for example edit playlist name) could be styled like
 the search text entry field.

Some of this will happen when I start working on the settings.

Michael, please check out the Jive I don't want album art thread, as
some of it is relevant to the web UI:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39185

Bottom line, a number of us (including myself) would like the ability
to use Jive and SC7 web without it trying to display cover art.

Thanks,

Peter

Thanks for the pointers. That (and the playlist collapse button) helps
a lot. But on the left/browse pane, if I go My Music Albums and
select an album, I still have a big cover image and have to scroll the
left/browse pane to see the song list.

How can I easily relaunch the wizard to check the correction of bug
#5597?

Am I wrong, or have I seen expanding tree with album titles of an
artist or tracks title of an album in this new default skin? I can't
get anything tree expand now and I'm wondering if it's a problem,
normal... or personal brain damage.

Michael, do you like us to write bugzilla reports on feature requests

That's never been part of the new skin, but might still be available in Classic
 Fishbone.

Please file bugs as bug reports. Feature requests? You can file them, but

That's what I feared, could be either my brain either a bad refresh
during skin changing... all in all, it's a good feature for the new
default skin ;)
