[Ontbirds]Fw: Hamilton CBC preliminary results
- Original Message - From: tom thomas To: Subject: Hamilton CBC preliminary results Hello, Here are the preliminary results of the 2007 Hamilton Christmas Bird Count, held on December 26th. 2007. On a cool -4 degrees C, relatively calm but foggy morning, 85 participants set out to count birds in the field, at the lake, or at their birdfeeders. The temperature settled in for most of the day at -2 degrees C. There was a hint of hoar frost on the pines and the tall weeds, and it was tricky underfoot on some of the woodland trails. In some of the outlying areas it was too foggy to see or identify birds in flight, and on the lake, counters had difficulty determining the number of ducks that were scattered over the lake, with many too far out, and at the limits of the counters ability to identify them. The total number of birds counted was 63,046, which is below the last ten year average of 70,228. Thanks to the influx of some of the northern finches, we broke the old individual species count record of 102 set in 2004, by one, so the new individual species count record now stands at 103. It also appears that the common woodland and garden species are becoming even more common with new record counts for the following species... Old Record New Record Mourning Dove 1,507 2,040 Black-capped Chickadee 2,109 2,223 Northern Cardinal 598 661 Red-breasted Nuthatch 81 97 American Goldfinch 1,005 1,055 Red-bellied Woodpecker 33 46 Downy Woodpecker 288 316 The number of Hoary Redpolls counted this year ( 5 ) broke the old record of ( 1 ) seen in 1993. On the lake and Inland waters we broke count records for... Old Record New Record Trumpeter Swan 106 162 Mute Swan 85 89 Lesser Black-backed Gull1 2 Mallard x American Black Duck 44 48 Red-breasted Merganser 285 331 Hooded Merganser48 70 Iceland Gull7 9 There were low counts for the following species.American Crow, Horned Lark, Snow Bunting, Brown-headed Cowbird, Purple Finch, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Northern Pintail, Greater Scaup, Canvasback, and Redhead. We missed on the Wood Duck, and American Wigeon. Up to this point, only one count week species has been tallied.Evening Grosbeak. [Ontbirds]Snowy Owl - York Region
Long overdue, a Snowy Owl has finally shown up in York Region this winter. Keith Dunn found (and photographed) one on Ravenshoe Road Saturday afternoon around 4.20 pm. It was west of Lake Drive, perched on a TV antenna on the north side of Ravenshoe Rd., which runs east-west along the southern boundary of Keswick. Turn west from Leslie and follow the road down the big hill, past the baseball diamonds and out into the agricultural flats. An unexpected sight on Friday afternoon (4:30 p.m.) was five Trumpeter Swans flying southeast over Hwy. 404 and Vandorf Road. On Saturday afternoon my family and I had great looks at a Pileated Woodpecker excavating a huge hole in a pine tree in the northwestern part of the Eldred King Tract (one of several York Regional Forests). This forest sits between McCowan and Markham Roads a few kms north of the Wellington/Aurora Road. Another Pileated was observed in Aurora's Sheppard's Bush woodlot this past week - likely a resident bird. On Friday Norm Murr had a Northern Flicker, a flock of 30+ American Robins, and a pair of Cooper's Hawks at the David Dunlop Observatory in Richmond Hill. He also observed three White-tailed Deer: two bucks and a doe. Ron Fleming, Newmarket ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]Bufflehead x Hooded Merganser Hybird - Bronte Harbour
Dear Fellow Birders, Today while on the Mid-winter Waterfowl Count I came across an apparent Bufflehead x Hooded Merganser hybrid at the east side of Bronte Harbour. It was seen for about 40 minutes immediately east of the harbour in with a flock of Greater Scaup, Common Goldeneye, and Bufflehead. The bird had a blackish head that came to a crest, similar to a Hooded Merganser, but had a oval white spot behind the eye (which was black), the breast was white, the back grayish, and the sides whitish-gray, with what looked like a bit of white on the leading each of the wing. I unfortunately did not have a camera at the time, so no pictures were taken. I am interested to hear how often this hybrid has been seen in Ontario. Also seen today was a Red-throated Loon off of Coronation Park, and NO Harlequin Ducks were found in the Port Credit area. Directions: Take the QEW west from Toronto to Oakville and exit at Bronte Rd and follow this south to the lake. Park along the road and walk to the open lake east of the harbour. Coronation Park - Exit the QEW at Third Line and follow this down towards the lake, turn left at Lakeshore Rd and then right into the park. Port Credit - Exit the QEW at Mississauga Rd and follow this south to the lake, it dead ends at Saddington Park which provides lake access. [Ontbirds]Harris's Sparrow----NO--Erie Beach
Sparrow seekers at Erie Beach : In spite of many pairs of eyes today, the Harris's Sparrow was not re-located to my knowledge. I would be happy to be told otherwise. Mother Nature bestowed a night-long rain on this area, and washed away what little snow we had. It was expected that the flock of sparrows would leave the compost for nature's own food. It is believed that the birds haven't gone far--good habitat is just next door to the compost pile. A fresh supply of snow will no doubt bring the birds back to the smorgasbord of food ! I'll let you know !!---and please do the same !! P.S.---the entrance road is now MUCK !!!- stay clear. [Ontbirds]Harris' Sparrow at Erie Beach
Hi all, After reading Irene's post, I would just like to say that the Harris' Sparrow is still there. I saw it today at 4:00. It was hanging out in the fence row that juts out into the field. It associates exclusively with the White-crowns. Jim Burk Blenheim On. Directions: Take #3 Highway [Talbot Trail ] out of Blenheim twds Cedar Springs. Choice 1 :---go 1 road past the Erieau Rd. to Gore Rd. . Turn left twds. Lake Erie. Travel about 2 km. and you will see the compost pile on your left. Or, Choice 2---Take the paved road twds. Erieau. About 1/2 way to Erieau you will see Bisnett Sideroad. Turn right--S--on Bisnett. Travel about 1km. twds. Erie Beach. Just at the outskirts of Erie Beach you will see a dirt road--N---Gore Road. The compost pile is about 1/2 km. N on this road. Dirt shoulders are VERY soft just now, this is a busy road, but a good width. Please--please stay in your car to observe. Birds are very skittish. If you flush the birds, you will have to wait possibly 20 min. for their return ! You do have the choice to drive slowly into the driveway there, and turn off your engine/ lights. The birds will adjust to your presence in a few minutes. But , you will have to move if a delivery truck arrives. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. Today's walk occurred during some thick fog in the late morning hours, which limited the distance at which we could see. We started at the Rouge Hill GO Train station and worked our way west to Highland Creek (2 km). We encountered a small flock of American Tree Sparrows with the company of a few Dark-eyed Juncos. There were hundreds of Greater Scaup that littered the shoreline throughout our walk. Other diving ducks included Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Long-tailed Duck, Common and Red-breasted Mergansers. There was also several Gadwall and American Wigeon amongst numerous Mallards. There was a female American Kestral perching along the train tracks during our walk. [Ontbirds]Tufted Titmouse in Burlington
Started the day off at Walkers Line, in Burlington where 16 Pine Grosbeaks where sighted and photographed. Then off to Paletta's Lakeshore Park to find the Tufted Titmouse I saw yesterday until the eagle flyby. I believe there are at least two Tufted Titmouse in the park flying around with some chickadees. There were Nuthatches, Cardinals, Downy Woodpecker, and Gold Finches and waterfowl mostly mallards viewed. The weather was foggy and grey, but warm so the photos of the Titmouse are not the greatest but photos none the less. [Ontbirds]Harlequin, Barrow's Goldeneye at Presqu'ile
Hello Ontbirders, I did the Presqu'ile section of the mid-winter waterfowl survey today and had some interesting birds. I recorded 6943 individuals representing 18 spp. of waterfowl between the Barcovan channel (joining the west end of Weller's Bay with Lake Ontario) and Wicklow Boat launch. The best finds were already known birds - a male Barrow's Goldeneye off the Presqu'ile lighthouse, and a female Harlequin Duck in the channel between Gull and High Bluff Island. Also notable was an Am. Coot off the Government Dock on Bayshore Rd., Presqu'ile, along with two Lesser Scaup there and 6 more off Gull Is. There was a new record high for Mute Swans (464), all but about 50 in Presqu'ile Bay. Mixed in were 8 Tundra and one Trumpeter. Other interesting sightings included an imm. Bald Eagle in Presqu'ile Bay, 3 Glaucous and 2 Iceland Gull on Gull Is., and two Eastern Bluebirds on Barnes Rd., between the two sets of railway tracks. Barnes Rd. is about 6 km west of Brighton and runs south from Hwy. 2 to Lake Ontario. Cheers, Doug McRae Doug McRae Nature Services P.O.
