[Ontbirds] Bird Studies Canada is looking for Short-eared Owl reports -- any time this winter, anywhere in Canada
Dear Birders Bird Studies Canada Ontario Region is interested in identifying Short-eared Owl locations across Canada and, in particular, Ontario. BSC has developed a simple online reporting tool and we ask anyone who sees Short-eared Owls to report them using the Short-eared Owl Observation Formhttps://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Short-earedOwls. To provide a complete report we ask that you include the date and location (ideally latitude and longitude), and basic information on the owl(s) behaviour. We have included mapping and coordinates conversion tools on the website form to make reporting easy. For more information on Bird Studies Canada's Short-eared Owl monitoring visit www.birdscanada.org/research/speciesatrisk/seowhttp://www.birdscanada.org/research/speciesatrisk/seow . [Ontbirds] Red Bellied Woodpecker Carleton Place []
Around 10 am at my house in Carleton Place (50 km west of Ottawa) (Herriott St area) my wife spotted our first ever Red Bellied Woodpecker in the backyard! He was soon gone, headed to warmer climes. Herriott St is just off of the main st of CP (Bridge St) which is the second set of lights as you arrive from Ottawa on Hwy 7 you turn right, go through town, and over the bridge. Herriott St is the 3rd st after the bridge. cheers Iain CO DSBC(NC) ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Northern Goshawk - Stratford
Harald Scholz and I saw an immature Northern Goshawk this afternoon in central Stratford. The bird was first seen chasing pigeons over the city. It flew around displaying its long barred tail and finely streaked breast. It then landed on the Court House and sat on top of one of the turrets, allowing us an excellent view The Court House is on Ontario Street just south of the Huron Bridge. [Ontbirds] Golden Eagle, Bowmanville, Snowy Owl, Whitby
Hi All As of 12 noon today the snowy owl at Whitby Harbour was still present on the rock wall on the south west part of the harbour, near the small green and white lighthouse looking thing(not the red and white lighthouse at the lake end of the groin) Also at 3:15 today a Golden Eagle migrated over my house in north Bowmanville, near the corner of Liberty and Concession 3. It is probably west of Toronto by now. Directions to the Owl Exit the 401 at Brock St. in Whitby. Turn south on Brock and continue south across the small bridge with water to the east and west. At the next point where Brock St. is right beside the water you should be able to see the green and white lighthouse to the south west. The owl was on the rocks very near to the light. There is parking a couple of hundred ft. farther along on the right. [Ontbirds] North American Birds Fall sightings
This posting has been approved by the Ontbirds coordinator. The magazine North American Birds is published four times a year by the American Birding Association and contains significant seasonal sightings and summaries from across the continent for all regions of North America, as well as Mexico, Central America and some of the Caribbean islands. More information about North American Birds can be found at http://www.aba.org The NAB Fall season is from August 1 through November 30, and in an attempt to collect as much information as possible from around Ontario we are posting a list of the regional contributors across the province. So, if you have not already submitted your interesting Fall observations for 2011 to your local compiler, or are not sure who this compiler is, we would encourage you to do so by email as soon as possible. Some of you may have already posted your Fall observations to Ontbirds or eBird, but it is easy enough for the Ontario seasonal editor to miss an Ontbirds post or eBird submission. Therefore, if you don't know if your sightings have already been included in a regional report, please copy them to the local compilers listed below. Thank you very much for your assistance. [Ontbirds] Niagara River: Razorbill, Harlequin Duck, Black Vulture, Franklin's Gull
Hi Everyone Had a great afternoon birding along the Niagara River between 1:30 and 4:30pm.. The 2 female Harlequin Duck were present at the control gates above the falls at 1:30pm. The first winter Franklin's Gull was showing well at Sir Adam Beck and 5 Black Vultures were soaring over the river along with 7 Turkey Vulture off the scenic lookout along the parkway near Queenston. At NOTL the Razorbill was at its usual location. A 1st winter Franklin's Gull flew by towards dusk and we counted 5500+ Bonaparte's Gull heading out onto Lake Ontario. If you require additional information, please email me privately. [Ontbirds] Kingston area birds to Dec. 2, 2011
Most of the recent reports are of the large concentrations of waterfowl in the city. The Greater Cataraqui River has its usual large number of puddle ducks, divers and coots but 4 Mute and 46 Tundra Swans was a bit unexpected at that location. In Elevator Bay both swans can be found but there were also a couple of Canvasbacks and a Red-throated Loon this week. Highlights from the Amherstview sewage lagoons were 120 Bufflehead and 70 Bonaparte's Gulls. Winter birds noted were Northern Shrikes at Battersea, Camden East and Amherst Island; Pine Siskins, in very small numbers, at Bedford Mills, Chaffey's Lock and Elginburg; and a few Purple Finch moving through Prince Edward Point a week and a half ago. Raptors of note included an immature Golden Eagle near Gananoque and 2 Turkey Vultures at the Cataraqui Conservation Area on November 20th. Owls put on a good showing this week; a pair of E. Screech Owls north of Millhaven, Great Horned at the same location as well as at Battersea and the Queen's Biological Station, a Barred at Gould Lake, 7 Short-eared on Amherst and the area's first Snowy on the Amherst KFN property on November 25th. Other noteworthy sightings were a Red-winged Blackbird at Bedford Mills and Golden-crowned Kinglets at Dupont and Lemoine Point. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker continues to linger at the Elginburg feeder and the Peregrine Falcon has returned to the windowsill on Botterell Hall on the Queen's campus. A flock of 120 House Finches near Dupont was nearly ten times the largest group seen all year. [Ontbirds] Wood duck near Bradford, Ont.
Today I spotted a beautiful (are there any that aren't?!) male wood Duck swimming in the canal along Canal Road east of Hwy. 400 exit before you get to Tornado Rd. This is only noteworthy because of the late date - my only winter record of this species in this area. Peter Wukasch Go north on Hwy. 400 to Canal Rd. exit and turn right on Canal Rd., checking the canal on the left before you pass Tornado Rd. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Hamilton Naturalists Club Birding Report - Friday, December 2nd, 2011
NORTHERN PARULA Tundra Swan American Wigeon Red-throated Loon Common Loon Pied-billed Grebe Horned Grebe Red-necked Grebe Osprey Northern Goshawk Bonaparte's Gull Northern Shrike Common Raven Eastern Bluebird Yellow-rumped Warbler Lapland Longspur Eastern Meadowlark Brown-headed Cowbird White-winged Crossbill For such a warm November, it's been a little bit of a slow start to the winter listing season but this weekend should bring out the birders who are winter listers and the list will grow. I have great expectations for next week's report! The biggest star of the week is a NORTHERN PARULA found last Monday and well seen today at Bronte Bluffs in the little parkette near Sovereign House. This bright little bird is well worth the trip to see and is a refreshing sight as its colours are outstanding. This little gem was found by a group of ladies who bird each Monday and who have found Ross Geese, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and now this in the last three weeks. Hats off to them for getting out and turning these birds up. Seen from LaSalle marina today out on the bay were Tundra Swan, Red-throated and Common Loon and Horned Grebe. These are all good birds to get before the water freezes up. Winter finches seem a bit scarce at the moment but perhaps the start of snow up north will drive them in. White-winged Crossbills seem to be on the move again with a large group seen in West Hamilton last weekend. Crossbills were also present at Bronte Bluffs while in pursuit of the Northern Parula and heard over south Burlington in the Walker's Line and New Street area. In the odds and sods this week, American Wigeon was seen at Chancery Lane Promenade in Oakville. Red-necked Grebes are present at Bronte Harbour. A Pied-billed Grebe is back at the Desjardins Canal. A late Osprey was seen over Deer Run Court in Brantford last Saturday. A Northern Goshawk made an appearance through the Tuck Creek ravine in South Burlington. Bonaparte's Gulls along with a few Red-throated Loons were seen on east winds at VanWagners Beach early in the week. Northern Shrike was reported from Powerline Road west of 5th Road East up in Saltfleet and from Fallsview Road again up in Rock Chapel. A Common Raven was seen today at 5th Concession West and Brock Road. Eastern Bluebirds were seen in the town of York mid-week. A Yellow-rumped Warbler was present at Saddington Park in Mississauga. A Lapland Longspur was a great flyover early this morning at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington. Eastern Meadowlark was reported on December 1st from the McNally Pit in North Halton. A Brown-headed Cowbird was seen at 8th Road East and Green Mountain Road. It's a great weekend to get out and look for those birds for the winter list. Please report your sightings!
