[Ontbirds] OFO Big Sit Point Pelee May 11,2019

2019-05-13 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirders

Tom Hince, Paul Pratt, and I had lots of fun on our Big Sit fundraiser for
the Ontario Field Ornithologists. We used the same location as last year,
west side of the tip of Point Pelee National Park. Park staff (especially
Sarah Rupert) kindly allowed early access to the Tip and were very
supportive. Again, many friends dropped by through the day offering support
and even adding a bird or two to the list. Unlike last year’s unsettled
weather it was a beautiful sunny day; not the best for an exciting birding
day. Kathi Cavanaugh Hince brought us hot coffee and snacks plus enough
food for an army! Greatly appreciated by the team. Jeremy Bensette made
sure we didn’t miss anything! Our final total was 108 species. Last year
we recorded 110 species. The top bird was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo which
landed briefly in a tree beside the van. Thanks to all those who
contributed to the OFO fundraiser (visit www.ofo.ca to contribute).
It was again a wonderful experience!
Thank you,

[Ontbirds] 100th Ottawa-Gatineau CBC preliminary results

2018-12-18 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
The 100th Ottawa-Gatineau Christmas Bird Count took place on
Sunday,December 16, 2018. A total of 75 species were reported (average
count 72 species).
Highlights included Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (2nd record) and Rose-breasted
Grosbeak (4th record). It was a pleasant day weather wise with an overnight
low of -5c and a daylight high of +2c. With only a few centimeters of snow
left on the ground the overall coverage was good. The Ottawa and Rideau
Rivers were still mainly open but since the deep freeze during the latter
part of November, a number of waterbirds were absent and late lingering
land birds disappeared. Fortunately most species of winter finches were
found in varying numbers.
Other notable species included 4 Barrow's Goldeneye, 3 Belted Kingfisher, 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker, 1 Winter Wren, and 1 Swamp Sparrow.
There were a number of species missed including Gray Partridge, Great
Horned Owl, and Northern Flicker.
I'd like to thank the co-compilers, Bernie Ladouceur and Daniel Toussaint,
the sector leaders Quebec side: Aylmer: Rod Dubois, Hull:Daniel St.
Hilaire, Ontario side: Britannia: Bruce Di Labio, Ottawa: Aaron Hywarren,
and Gloucester: Bernie Ladouceur and feeder coordinator Lorraine Elworthy.
Finally, on behalf of the Ottawa Field Naturalist Club I'd like to thank
the Club des ornithologues de I'Outaouais for organizing the amazing dinner
and celebration of both the 100th Ottawa CBC and their club's 40th
anniversary.
It was a great time!

[Ontbirds] The Big Sit Results

2018-05-12 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hello Ontbirders
Wondering how we did? Tom Hince, Paul Pratt, and myself just wrapped up our Big
Sit fundraiser for the Ontario Field Orthithologists. We picked a spot on the
west side of the Tip of Point Pelee National Park. Park staff (especially
Sarah Rupert) kindly allowed early access to the Tip and were very supportive.
Many friends dropped by through the day offering support and even adding a bird
or two to the list. The weather was a challenge but we sheltered under the
tailgate of the van when the rains came and Kathi Cavanaugh Hince brought us
hot coffee and a hot lunch to keep us going. Michael A. Biro brought some hot
potatoes and a gnatcatcher. Mike Runtz snagged the only Bay-breasted Warbler of
the day. The top birds were a heard only Smith's Longspur (rattle call), six
Red-throated Loons, 20 species of warblers, and all three scoters. Big misses
were American Crow, Chimney Swift and Red-bellied Woodpecker. And drum roll
please.. the grand total was 110 species smashing the previous Pelee Big Sit
record!
Thanks to all those who contributed to the OFO fundraiser (visit www.ofo.ca to
contribute).
It was fantastic for us to do a big day together after almost seventeen years
(since breaking the North American big day record!).
Thank you,

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Black-throated Gray Warbler update

2017-12-12 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Everyone

Sadly this morning I found the Britannia ridge Black-throated Gray Warbler
near death. After searching for a while I noticed a bird laying motionless
at the base of a tree. I picked it up and held it in my hands to warm it
up. Unfortunately it did not make it. The specimen will be donated to the
Royal Ontario Museum. This individual was first observed on November 2 and
was seen most days until December 2. After a week of absence it was back on
site December 10-12. This warbler was enjoyed by many birders and
photographers over its lengthy stay. Unfortunately insectivorous don't do
well in the winter.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Carleton Place: Anna's Hummingbird

2017-11-17 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontbirders

There is an immature female Anna’s Hummingbird visiting a feeder in
Carleton

Place which is located west of Ottawa. This is the first accessible Anna’s
Hummingbird for southern Ontario and one of the few for Ontario. This bird
will generate lots of interest.

The hummer was first observed on November 3 and I was asked to view it on
November 10. On this date I determined it to be an Anna’s Hummingbird. A
few small groups were able to view it on November 11 and 13 but due to the
sensitivity of the situation, it wasn’t until November 16 that an agreement
was arranged for a general alert. This could change at any time resulting
in the homeowners removing the feeder from their premise.

The homeowners do not want anyone on their property, but it’s possible to
view the feeder from Mackenzie St, between Dufferin and Thomas. Look
southeast opposite #61 Mackenzie over two backyards. The third yard has a
wooden fence with a standard hummingbird feeder on it.

The hummingbird shows up early, usually shortly after 7:30 and feeds a few
times every 10-20 minutes depending on the temperature. A scope is
necessary to identify the bird.

Please park on Dufferin or another nearby street but not Mackenzie. You
can view from the edge of the road, at 60 Mackenzie. Please do not go onto
the lawn. Neighbours have been very pleasant to birders who have seen it
and we would like to keep this as a positive experience for them!

Good luck,

Bruce Di Labio

north to Hwy 7 via Tweed. Turn right and drive east towards Ottawa. As you

[Ontbirds] Almonte: Cave Swallow

2017-11-05 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Everyone
The Cave Swallow found by Michelle and Paul Martin was still present from
1630 to 1647 over the field opposite the church at Wolf Grove Road and
Ramsay Con. 8. The swallow spent most of its time low over the field at eye
level and occainally would rise up high. The last time we observed it, the
swallow was over the spruce trees at the church. This represents the 3rd
record for the Ottawa 50 km District and the first record for Lanark
County. The first Ottawa record was on November 3,2012 at Bate Island at
the Champlain Bridge followed by the second occurrence on November 23 and
24, 2012 at Constance Bay.
Directions: From Ottawa take Hwy 417 west to March Road. After existing for
March Road to Almonte and continue to the intersection of Wolf Grove and
Ramsay Con. 8. The swallow was last observed feeding over the field
opposite the church before moving over to the spruce trees.

Good birding

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Razorbill and migrants

2017-11-01 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Ontbirders
Well it was another exciting day in Canada's capital! The Razorbill was
found today by Jon Ruddy and Ottawa birders experienced another
fallout/flight from the north. After a few days of good birding a number of
us were stationed at various vantage points along the south side of Lake
Deschenes (Ottawa River) and we weren't disappointed. With the continuing
unsettled weather there was a good movement of waterbirds. Highlights
included a small flight of Brant, likely 400+, 1 Purple Sandpiper, 4
Red-throated Loons, 250+ Dunlin, 1 Black-bellied Plover and 1 Greater
Yellowlegs. So in general, lots of waterbirds on the move south as
temperatures drop in the north. Lots of possibilities.
With Jon Ruddy at Dick Bell Park, Mike Tate at Andrew Haydon Park and
myself along with others at Britannia Pier it was a interesting time and
lots of texting to keep up with all the observations. What a change in
birding! The highlight of the day was the Razorbill observed in flight by
Jon Ruddy as it landed off Dick Bell Park. The word went out and numerous
birders got to see this rarity. This represents the second record for the
Ottawa-Gatineau 50 km district and one of the few records for eastern
Ontario. There is a specimen record from October 14,1950 in Big Rideau
Lake,Lanark County, a photographic record of a specimen from Wolfe Island
on November 29, 1984, a record from Lake Dore, Renfrew county, December
1-5,1989, and another sight record from the St. Lawrence River at Cornwall
on November 27, 1987. The first record for the Ottawa District was found on
October 22,2011 by Mark Gawn and was last observed on November 1, 2011.I
would watch out for anything along the Ottawa River since these birds are
likely from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Anything is possible!

Good birding,
Bruce

Directions: Check along the Ottawa off Carling Ave. between Dick Bell Park
and Britannia. Also check Deschenes Rapids below Britannia.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa area: Razorbill, Purple Sandpipers, and Golden Eagles

2017-10-31 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Everyone
Great day birding the Ottawa River with numerous highlights. This morning
at around 8:00 a.m. while birding Dick Bell Park I observed 3 Purple
Sandpipers. There were a number of small flocks of Dunlin over the river as
well as 2 Sanderling, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers and 4 Brant. The Purples were
very nervous and didn't land on the rocky point but continued flying west.
There were a number of scoters on the river including 40+ Black, 4 Surf
and 2 White-winged along with 18 male Long-tailed Ducks. At least one late
lingering Great Egret was present at Andrew Haydon Park.
Late morning I birded Constance Bay. With the changing weather conditions
I headed to the point area to view the Ottawa River/Constance Bay. Within a
few minutes I spotted my first Golden Eagle migrating south overhead and
after an hour I observed 6 Golden and 1 Bald Eagle. My highest one day
count ever for Golden's in the Ottawa area. This once rare species has
been been increasing in numbers over the past 3 decades. At around 12:30
pm I spotted a Razorbill offshore. The bird disappeared twice for a period
of time but fortunately was present when the first group of birders from
Ottawa arrived but later disappeared offshore again for any late arrivals.
This represents the second record for the Ottawa district. A total of 9
Purple Sandpipers were found during the day.

Good birding,
Bruce Di Labio

Directions: Constance Bay is located NW of Ottawa off Dunrobin Road and
Point Restaurant is off Bayview Drive. Dick Bell Park is located off

a male Hooded Warbler was found by Stephen Phillips in the Ottawa area. The
bird was found and photographed in the Fallowfield area off Steeple Hill
Crescent along the Jock River at Terry Carisse Park. This represents the

district. Previous earliest record, May 7,1994 at Clyde Ave Woods, Ottawa.
Good birding,
Bruce

Direction: From Ottawa take Hwy 417 west to Hwy 416 south to Fallowfiled Road.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Ross's Goose and Snowy Owls

2014-04-18 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi Everyone
This morning at around 9:15a.m. there was an adult Ross's Goose feeding in a
corn field with a large concentration of Canada Geese along Boundary Road just
north of Cooper Hill Road. There were 1000's of Canada Geese feeding in the
various corn fields and reports from Carlsbad Springs/ Bear Brook indicated a
large increase, 25,000 + since yesterday. Snowy Owls continue to move north
through the Ottawa area. I counted a total of 11 owls sitting on the remaining
ice along the Ottawa River (Lake Deschenes) yesterday, April 17th.

Good birding,
Bruce

Directions: From Ottawa take Hwy.417 east to Boundary road exit and turn right.
Follow south to Cooper Hill Road.
