[Ontbirds] 6 Little Gulls and 1 Pacific Loon in Barrie
Today, Riley Walsh and I birded the Barrie waterfront. At Minet's Point, we found 6 Little Gulls - 5 adults and 1 first winter bird. We met Jim Coey at Kempenfelt Park where 3 Little Gulls were seen - 2 adults and 1 first winter bird. Then at Allandale Centre Park (Southshore Community Centre) on Lakeshore Drive there were 2 adult Little Gulls very close, and 1 first winter. Hundreds of Bonaparte's Gulls are on the Bay and where they concentrate is at least one Little Gull. Common Terns are still common among the Bonaparte's Gulls, though numbers seem to be going down. Emerald Shiners (minnows) are abundant right now. We could not locate the Pacific Loon at these well-known locations where it has been seen before. Hundreds of Common Loons were way out to the east, so to get closer we consulted eBird Hotspots and Google Maps. We found eBird Hotspot Wilkins Beach <https://ebird.org/hotspots?hs=L5096368=all=> Hotspot Map and here was the adult Pacific Loon in breeding plumage, also seen by John Carley and Sue and Bob Codd. DIRECTIONS (thank you Frank Pinilla): Minet's Point Park - exit Hwy 400 at Essa Road in Barrie, go north on Essa about 1.5km, turn right (east) on Tiffin St and at the next lights continue through where this becomes Lakeshore Drive, follow for 1.6km and turn left on Minet's Point Road, this winds its way down and to the right until you see the entrance to the park. Scan the bay from the beach here. Wilkins Beach Park - from Minet's Point return to Hurst Drive and turn left. Follow to Crimson Ridge Road and turn left to end. Getting directions to the best access points is easy using eBird Hotspots and clicking on the directions. If not familiar with the Barrie Waterfront, you may wish to join the Ontario Field Ornithologists trip this Saturday. OFO TRIP TO BARRIE LAKESHORE on Saturday, 12 October 2019, 9:00 am. Leader: Jim Coey Meet at the City of Barrie Dock Road Municipal Parking lot at 204 Dock Road, south-east corner of Dock Road and Plunkett Ct. at 9.00 am. We will look for migrants in the parks and waterfowl on the lake. Lake Simcoe has had some surprising birds over the years. Who knows what will turn up? Easy walking, bring snacks and water. Gulls, waterfowl, loons, and late lingering migrants. [Ontbirds] OFO Trip to the Carden Alvar, 26 May 2019
Today's outing was OFO's 28th annual field trip to the Carden Alvar. In great weather, our group of 50 tallied 99 species by walking Wylie Road from the cabin to north of Sedge Wren Marsh in the morning and visiting other birding sites in the afternoon. We saw and/or heard many of the target birds including: Loggerhead Shrike, Grasshopper Sparrow, Upland Sandpiper, Eastern Towhee (lots), Brown Thrasher, Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Eastern Bluebird, Alder and Willow Flycatchers, Sedge Wren, Marsh Wren, Least Bittern, Wilson's Snipe, Virginia Rail, Golden-winged Warbler, and Clay-colored Sparrow. We saw and heard Soras in several locations, possibly favoured by high water levels. An American Bittern flushed from beside the main road. From the parking area at Bluebird Box 10 we watched a Groundhog climb a tree to eat the buds. Butterflies were active, including many Red Admirals, Spring Azures and Black Swallowtails. Prairie Smoke, Carden Alvar's signature wildflower, was just starting to bloom on the alvar meadows. A large portion of the alvar is now protected by Carden Alvar Provincial Park (includes Cameron and Windmill Ranches) and other properties owned by The Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Couchiching Conservancy. Directions: Carden Alvar Birding Site Guide with printable guide/map for use in the field. http://www.ofo.ca/site/page/view/articles.cardenalvar I thank co-leaders, Ron Tozer and Eleanor Beagan. Also, Gray Carlin, Eric Baldo, Andrew Don, Laura Tozer, Jessica and Heather Brousseau, Bob Falconer and others helped everyone to see and enjoy the birds, and those with scopes generously shared them. Take trail at southwest end of lot beside East Point Park Bird Sanctuary sign. Follow path to top of Bluffs and keep right along top of bluffs to a point where you have a panoramic view west along shoreline. This is about 450 metres from parking lot. [Ontbirds] Carden Alvar - 2017 OFO Field Trip
Today's outing was OFO's 26th annual field trip to the Carden Alvar. In ideal weather, our group of 37 tallied 90 species by walking Wylie Road in the morning and visiting other birding sites in the afternoon. We saw many of the target birds including superb views of Loggerhead Shrike, Golden-winged Warbler, Grasshopper Sparrow and Clay-colored Sparrow. We also found 3 American Bitterns, Least Bittern, Upland Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Virginia Rail, Alder Flycatcher, Willow Flycatcher, Sedge Wren, Marsh Wren, Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Brown Thrasher, Northern Mockingbird, Eastern Towhee, Eastern Bluebird, Pileated Woodpecker, and 2 Great Egrets in the former Great Blue heronry on Shrike Road South. Tent Caterpillar nests are a common sight on the cherry trees, and we saw several Black-billed Cuckoos, so it looks like a good year for them. Water Snakes put on a good show in the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Road, and we watched a very young Porcupine. Butterflies were active, including a Monarch. Prairie Smoke, Carden Alvar's signature wildflower, carpeted the alvar meadows. Alvars are globally rare habitats of limestone or dolomite bedrock at the surface (pavement) or covered with thin soils and a sparse vegetation of lichens, mosses, herbs/forbs, shrubs and sometimes trees. Vegetation is restricted by shallow soils and extremes of spring wetness and summer. The Carden Alvar formed near the end of the last Ice Age when huge torrents of glacial meltwater washed away much of the sand and gravel (overburden) covering the bedrock. A large portion of the alvar is now protected by Carden Alvar Provincial Park (includes Cameron and Windmill Ranches) and other protected properties owned by The Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Couchiching Conservancy. Directions: Carden Alvar Birding Site Guide with printable guide/map for use in the field. http://www.ofo.ca/site/page/view/articles.cardenalvar I thank co-leaders: Ron Pittaway, Ron Tozer, and Eleanor Beagan. In addition Bob Falconer, Justin Peter, Marvin and Janet Medelko, Jim Martin and others also spotted and helped everyone to see and enjoy the birds. Thank you everyone for coming to the Carden Alvar. [Ontbirds] OFO Niagara River Gull Trip - 4 December 2016
In perfect gull-watching weather on Sunday 4 December 2016, over 130 OFO members and friends spend an enjoyable day birding the Niagara River. The purpose of the trip was to identify and age the largest number of gull species and see other good birds on the River. It was a treat to see everyone from all over Ontario, and we were pleased to welcome our American friends from neighbouring states. Having so many sharp-eyed birders worked in our favour. Our group saw 10 species of gulls listed here in checklist order: Bonaparte's Gull: numerous and almost all were adults. Little Gull: one adult seen very well from the boat launch at Queenston. *Black-headed Gull: one adult flying and resting on the water put on an excellent show at Whirlpool, though was a challenge to pick out from above at the viewing areas. Ring-billed Gull: common on the River. Herring Gull: common on the River at Adam Beck and above the Falls. Thayer's Gull: one adult at Adam Beck was seen well. One juvenile below the Falls was seen well by a group that braved the wet mist. Kumlien's Iceland Gull: almost all the Iceland Gulls we see on the Niagara River are the kumlieni subspecies which breeds in the eastern Canadian Arctic. At Adam Beck we saw two adults and 1 third winter. Above the Falls out from the barge viewing area was one adult. Lesser Black-backed Gull: several adults and a juvenile at Adam Beck, and at least five adults and a juvenile seen from the control gates area. Glaucous Gull: one adult out from control gates area. Great Black-backed Gull: one adult at Adam Beck, two at Queenston, and least four adults and one juvenile above the Falls and at the control gates. Other Species on or near the River: four adult male Harlequin Ducks seen well from the viewing areas near the barge. At least five Tufted Titmice at Dufferin Islands were eating peanuts from people's hands, also a Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, Winter Wren and Brown Creeper. A Pine warbler was in a pine tree on the median between the Greenhouse and the River. Black Vultures were seen all day on various roofs and chimneys in Lewiston NY (up to 7 at one time), from the pull-off on the road below Brock Monument that leads down the hill to Queenston, adult Bald Eagle at Queenston. For tips and information about gull watching, please see http://www.ofo.ca/site/page/view/articles.gulls We thank everyone for coming and contributing to the success of the trip with their enthusiasm and camaraderie. For logistical support we are very grateful to Willie D'Anna, Betsy Potter, Dean Di Tommaso, Mike Nelson, Kevin Seymour, Greg Stuart, Karl Konze, Ron Pittaway, Eleanor Beagan and a person who texted us from a 613 number. Many shared their scopes and helped others see the birds. It was a fantastic day. After 17 years, we are retiring from leading the Niagara Gull Trip. Kempenfelt Park, 2:45 to 4:30 2 adult winter Little Gulls flying very close to shore. 1000 plus Common Loons - it's a spectacle of nature to see so many in every plumage: adult breeding, molting adults, winter adults and juveniles. Hi Everyone, Noam Markus just sent a text to say there is no sign of the Common Ringed Plover this morning at Cell 2 in Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto. Several others were also looking. Sorry about the negative report. It's helpful that people are still checking and reporting. Directions: Tommy Thompson Park is at Leslie and Unwin Avenue in Toronto. Park on Leslie or Unwin. [Ontbirds] Common Ringed Plover - Toronto - Thursday 25 August - YES
Paul Prior saw the Common Ringed Plover again this afternoon. Here's what he says on Facebook's Ontario Birds. "Visited TTP this pm, knowing rain was imminent but thinking new birds may have arrived last night ... and half expecting the Ringed Plover to have disappeared after last nights report of Peregrine activity. Turns out the plover was still on the same quarter of the island that's been his home since last weekend! And there were about 30 other shorebirds on the same island. I had time just to check the bigger birds and then the rain hit - and as it did almost every shorebird flushed and flew west. The only birds that remained were the Ringed, his Semipalmated friends, and a juv Wilson's Phalarope. Fellow birder Jessie may have better numbers for the departed flock since he had been watching for a while before I arrived. " I'm hoping to get an update for Ontbirders tomorrow Friday morning. So, it appears the Ringed Plover may be here for a while. He apparently shrugged off the Peregrine last night, and was completely unfazed when the flock of 30 shorebirds flushed ahead of the rain storm. So, it appears the Ringed Plover may be here for a while. He apparently shrugged off the Peregrine last night, and was completely unfazed when the flock of 30 shorebirds flushed ahead of the rain storm. With at least one Arctic breeding season under his belt he's no doubt encountered marauding Falcons (gyrfalcons, no doubt!) and storms before. Good luck this coming weekend for whoever still hopes to see this little star!! and flew west. The only birds that remained were the Ringed, his Semipalmated friends, and a juv Wilson's Phalarope. [Ontbirds] Clarification Directions Townsend's Solitaire - Sunnybrook Park, Toronto
Many looking now for Townsend's Solitaire in Sunnybrooke Park Toronto by no luck yet. Clarification how to get to "forbidden" bridge. If you drive into Sunnybrooke Park from Leslie, park in big parking lot at the stables. Walk back down road you came in a little way and cross bridge to parking lot where off leash dog park is. Turn right or north along gravel path marked Glendon Forest. Proceed a good 10 minutes walk to gated bridge. Some of us will not be crossing the bridge. However we understand that bird may be seen from this west side of bridge. Today with Declan Troy, Ross Harris, Brennan Obermayer and Dave Szmyr, we had close views of two Thayer's Gulls (adult and juvenile) on the Barrie waterfront at the foot of Bayfield Street. You can't miss the bonanza of gulls feeding on abundant minnows. We also saw three Little Gulls (a first winter and 2 adults) among loads of Bonaparte's Gulls, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2 juveniles and a second winter), and two Kumlien's Gulls (adult and a third winter). [Ontbirds] FW: OFO Niagara River Gull Trip - 29 November 2015
In lovely weather on Sunday 29 November 2015, over 125 OFO members and friends spend an excellent day birding the Niagara River. The purpose of the trip was to identify and age the largest number of gull species and see other good birds on the River. We were pleased to have so many birders interested in gulls and to be accompanied by keen young birders whose sharp eyes helped with spotting. Our group saw 9 species of gulls listed here in checklist order: Bonaparte's Gull: very numerous and almost all were adults. In the afternoon, the leucistic (almost all white) Bonaparte's Gull flew up and down the River at Adam Beck and gave excellent views. Black-headed Gull: one adult reported at the fly-past at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Ring-billed Gull: common on the River. Herring Gull: We saw hundreds especially above the Falls near the barge and control gates where there were feeding flocks. Thayer's Gull: one adult above the Falls was seen well as it stood for a while and flew around near the barge. Kumlien's Iceland Gull: almost all the Iceland Gulls we see on the Niagara River are the kumlieni subspecies which breeds in the eastern Canadian Arctic. At Adam Beck we saw 2 adults and 1 third winter. Above the falls and at the control gates there were several adults, one of which near the barge provided great comparison with adult Thayer's Gull. Lesser Black-backed Gull: almost full adult and juvenile at Adam Beck and three adults above the Falls. Glaucous Gull: Three adults above the Falls. Great Black-backed Gull: one adult at Adam Beck and three adults above the Falls and at the control gates. Small numbers so far this year. A possible first winter California Gull was reported at the control gates at Chippawa above the Falls. We're hoping someone will get better views and photos to confirm it. Other Species on or near the River: A first year male Harlequin Duck just north of Adam Beck was visible from the lookout. At least three Tufted Titmice at Dufferin Islands were eating peanuts, also a Red-bellied Woodpecker. Two late Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were at Dufferin Islands along with two Brown Creepers and Carolina Wrens. We ended with 10 Black Vultures in a row on a roof in Lewiston NY, seen from the pull-off on the road below Brock Monument that leads down the hill to Queenston. For tips and information about gull watching, please see http://www.ofo.ca/site/page/view/articles.gulls We thank everyone who came on today's trip for their energy and enthusiasm. A great team spotted the birds and helped everyone see the gulls, including Mark Ansell, Maris Apse, Eleanor Beagan, Mike and Ken Burrell, Willie D'Anna, Bill Gilmour, Tim Lucas, Kevin McLaughlin, Mike Nelson, Betsy Potter and Ron Pittaway. [Ontbirds] REDPOLL IRRUPTION - 125,000 redpolls
Pascal Cote of the Tadoussac Bird Observatory (212 km northeast of Quebec City) reports that yesterday (31 October) with “good winds (WNW), we counted 55,110 redpolls between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. We are pretty sure this is a New World record for one day. In Sweden, the highest count is 21,500. So over 125,000 redpolls have passed Tadoussac in less than a week.” We thank Pascal for keeping Ontario birders updated about this huge irruption.
