About 2:30pm this afternoon there was an almost pure white Snowy Owl
(presumably adult male) in the first ploughed field on the west side of Grey
Road 14 north of Arthur. When first seen it was on the shoulder of the road
but then flew a short distance into the field and landed. It was close enough
that it could be seen very clearly without binoculars.

Hello

A dark juvenile Snowy Owl has been showing up at the marina at the south end
of Frenchman's Bay in Pickering in the evenings this week - here on Friday
12th at dusk; on Tuesday she was feeding on a duck on a dock! This followed
a peregrine here earlier in the week also enjoying an avian meal. There is
has also been a white-winged scoter in the Bay channel.

Frenchman's Bay marina is at the south end of Liverpool road in Pickering.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl - Keele and Dundas West - TORONTO - double your pleasure.

2017-12-20 Thread Marc Lichtenberg via ONTBIRDS
For High Park denizens: if you visit the new Liquor Store on Dundas West, look
up to the south-west corner of that building's rooftop and you may catch a
young snowy owl, occasionally launching itself towards the aerial buffet of
pigeons at the corner of Keele and Dundas. It has been around the last couple
of days. On the last pass, the owl disappeared and a red-tailed hawk came up
from behind the pigeons... tis the season for quick change artists? The sight
of this snow white bird wheeling past Victorian era buildings is really
impressive.

Happy Break to all.

Just observed (1:45 pm) a snowy owl flying along the north side of Hwy 401,
westbound, between Winston Churchill Boulevard and Trafalgar Road. I've seen a
snowy in this area on several occasions over the past few years but this was my
first observation this winter.
It's noteworthy that the bird was moving significantly faster than the other
westbound commuters.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl in Lindsay ON.

2016-01-23 Thread Judy Kennedy
Today, I spotted a Snowy Owl, perched in the top of a big old gnarly tree,
situated in the back, south east corner of the property that the Colonial
Concepts Log home Company sits on.

There was a Snowy at the Lindsay Airport last year, and it was most often seen
sitting on the top of a hydro pole, just past the airport hanger. Sometimes it
would also perch on the top of an elm tree in a field across from the airport,
or on top of one of the light standards at the go kart track, south of the
airport. So, if you don’t see it where it was today, check these three other
places.

I got a side view photo, and the bird is very white, so I’m assuming it’s a
male.

Location: Highway 35, north of Highway 7 and Lindsay. Colonial Concepts is on
the east side of Hwy 35, north of the Lindsay Airport and just south of Thunder
Bridge Road.

Happy Owling!
Cheers,
Judy Kennedy, Cameron, ON

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl and Property Problems.

2016-01-08 Thread Norman Murr
Note:- I am posting the following with the permission of Mark Cranford the
Ontbirds Coordinator.

On a visit to the Ravenshoe Rd / Yonge St. area north of Toronto recently I
encountered a ploughed up snow road block half way down Yonge St.

When talking to some gentlemen (Owl Banders) there I was informed that the road
block was put up (legally or not) because of some people and some people in
cars that were trespassing on the dikes looking for / getting closer to or
chasing Snowy Owls.

(Driving around this block is having to trespass)

They also told me that local land owners said that they put up with the casual
owl viewing but it seems to be getting out of hand with some cars blocking
Ravenshoe Rd and Yonge St. making it harder for the trucks and farm vehicles
that go to and from the produce warehouses as well as the local residents
getting to and from their homes and because of the frequent trespassing of some
people trying to get closer to the owls in order to get close photos.

I myself have seen several men and women walking far out on the dikes, even the
ones with NO TRESPASSING signs very visible on and at the beginning of the
dike, most, if not all with large lens cameras and I have also seen a car out
on a dike with the driver and friends standing in front of it taking photos of
a Snowy Owl that they also proceeded to flush.

The same gentlemen above (the banders) also informed me that one woman in her
car got stuck on the dike at the end of Yonge St. and had to be rescued by a
tow truck this season already.

None of this is acceptable behaviour by photographers or birders and it can
only lead to problems from residents in the future and problems (already) for
the owls and of course could and should lead to charges of trespassing and
fines.

All of the land along both sides of Ravenshoe Rd and Yonge St. west of Leslie
St. is PRIVATE PROPERTY and should be treated as such.

Don’t ruin it for others and possible have it lead to the farmers shooing the
owls away from their fields which in many cases could lead to the death of some
of these great birds. They are there because of the food and rest available,
don’t take this from them

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl Dundas & 427 North

2015-01-14 Thread Kyle Holloway
Hello all!

For the past two nights, as I was on my way home from work at Wild Birds
Unlimited I saw a Snowy Owl on the Ramp from Dundas to the 427 North. the
bird appears to be an adult male. I contacted the store owners (Lynda &
Jim) who were able to see the bird well from the Metro Parking lot at
Cloverdale Mall. The Owl was actively hunting Flying from light standards
to the nearby Highway signs too. The Owl seemed oblivious to the shoppers
in the parking lot (all of whom were equally oblivious to the hunting owl!)

I debated posting the owls location, but due to its presence at a very
public space, and the easy of accessibility for those of you who are less
mobile (Jim just had his knee replaced and was able to get great looks at
it)

As a bonus last night I saw a second Snowy on the ramp from the 401 West to
the 410 North!

Feel free to drop by Wild Birds Unlimited if you have any questions about
the Owl, I'm here all week

Stay warm!

Kyle

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl at Bronte Harbour

2014-12-25 Thread Gavin Edmondstone
This may be of interest to people with Christmas visitors. I saw the now
long-staying Snowy Owl at Bronte Harbour this morning and this afternoon. This
morning the bird was on the west pier and I was able to get some decent photos
before it flew onto the top of the condo at Bronte Road and Ontario Street. (11
Bronte Road, Oakville) It was still there a few minutes ago.

Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte Road (Oakville) and go to the lake. The top
of the condo can be viewed from south of Lakeshore Rd. Go out on the pier on
the east side of Bronte creek. Check the west pier, the docks, the east (rocky)
breakwater and the masts of sailboat in the boat storage yard. The Suncor pier
west of here also can have an owl.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl (Male) - Kitchener, Ontario

2014-12-02 Thread Holly Anderson
At 6:45pm this evening (Dec 1, 2014) we spotted a beautiful male Snowy
Owl. Even though it is dark out, with the lightposts and shopping lighting,
it was obvious what it was when it swooped across the road and very visible
sitting on the post surveying everything below. A most magnificent sight.

It was located immediately at the corner of Fischer-Hallman Road and
Westmount Road, in Kitchener, ON on a lightpost adjacent to the TD Bank.
It was there for several hours..

>From 401 West:
Get off on Hwy 8, then take Hwy 7/8 to Stratford, get off on Fisher-Hallman
Road, Turn right onto Fisher-Hallman Road. Go Straight till you get to the
corner of Westmount and Fischer-Hallman Road (Williamsburg Plaza at the TD
Bank).

>From 401 East:
Get off on Cedar Creek Road exit. Turn left onto Cedar Creek. Turn Right
onto North Dumfries Road. Follow the curve to the right which turns into
Roseville Road. Turn left onto Fischer-Hallman Road. Follow Fischer-Hallman
till you reach the intersection of Fischer-Hallman and Westmount Road
(Williamsburg Plaza at the TD Bank).

Last night (May 24) at 9:15pm, my wife and I saw a Snowy Owl fly onto a hydro
pole on Highway 7 just west of Highway 427. We watched it for a couple of
minutes before if flew off to the west. We took a grainy photo.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl north of Erieau & Lapland Longspurs nr Blenheim

2014-05-08 Thread Frank Pinilla via ONTBIRDS
Hi again Ontbirders,

While at the Blenheim sewage lagoons my brother noticed a wet area in the field
north of the lagoons so we headed up to Allison Line which runs across the
north side of the lagoons. Here we had 3 Ruddy turnstone, several Least
Sandpiper and Dunlin as well as 2 Lapland Longspur ( one a stunning male bird),
6 American Pipit and 3 Horned Lark.

On a tip we headed to Erieau Rd just north of McGeachy Pond in Erieau and found
an adult male Snowy Owl on the east site of the road (easiest to stop on
Internal Line where there's less traffic).

Good birding,
Frank & Rob Pinilla

DIRECTIONS:

The sewage lagoons are on Lagoon Road just north of the Talbot Trail just west
of the town of Blenheim.

Erieau Rd is the next concession west of Lagoon Rd, head south from Talbot
trail towards the town of Erieau.
