Re: [Blind-Computing] confusion about CD types
Audio/data CD types are related to what info/how you write to either a writable or rewritable CD - the actual CD type itsself doesn't make a difference except that some older CD players aren't happy with rewriteable CDs, plus, the plain writeable ones will be a bit cheaper. Basically, it comes down to the software that helps you decide what type of CD to write. In other words, when you put a blank CD in the writer, then paste stuff thereto, then eject it (in Windows XP anyway), the CD writing wizard will pop up, and there you can choose what type of CD to write etc. and while there are other bits of accessible software out there, this sometimes works for me since there are radio buttons therein which allow you to choose the type you want to write. FWIW, though, some of the modern CD/DVD players can in fact still play CDs/DVDs with the .MP3 filews written thereto as data files, which means that, for example, the last time I had a party, I had basically 7 data CDs with around 180 MP3 songs on each of them, and the DVD player was just set to shuffle the contents. Re: [Blind-Computing] confusion about CD types
Hi Sharon, What you want to buy are CDR disks. When you burn your disk, burn it as an audio cd. This will allow you to play the disk in most new players. If the files you are wanting to put on the disk are not compatible with an audio cd format, then the software you are useing should alert you to this. If you need more help, let us know. I am not sure about scripts for VMWare but you can set up a virtual machine with VirtualPC 2007 which you can download from www.microsoft.com. VirtualPC does not require any scripts to run with JFW. Be forewarned that VirtualPC does not currently, and probably never will work directly with USB devices. Re: [Blind-Computing] confused;
A CD-R can be both a data CD or an Audio CD. It is indeed possible to mix data and audio information but it is probably best to avoid doing this as it can be technically difficult. Basically you tell your burning software whether you want a data or audio CD and it will copy files of appropriate format. A normal audio CD player will only recognise audio information in uncompressed forma such as the CDA or WAV file types. When you tell your CD burning software to make an audio cd - this is the format it will burn onto a audio CD. Nero for example will uncompress an mp3 track and convert it into a CDA track to burn onto a CD. This is then recognised by an audio player. Most audio players will not recognise an mp3 file for example though increasingly this capacity has been built in. Unless you tell your burning software to create an audio CD then what you will burn will be data which will be recognised by your computer as if it was any other disc drive. So using a CD R for back up is fine also. Re: [Blind-Computing] confusion about CD types
I experienced your same confusion when I tried using my PTR1, and pass along my sympathies. My solution was to go to a Staples, and find a clerk who really understood their products. It helps to specify that the CD's you want are more expensive than normal blank CD's because they include a charge to cover copyright protection. Good luck. You should note though, that you can easily record your lectures in Daisy format in MP3, and listen back to them, on your PTR1, or your computer using Media Player. It's only if you have to listen back on a standard CD player that recording them in the music format is important. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Sharon Sent: Monday, December 10, 2007 10:29 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] confusion about CD types I'm using a PTR1 recorder, and want to record lectures that anyone can listen to on a CD player. A very simple way to get an update is to go into the menu bar by hitting your alt key. Arrow over to the help menu, arrow down to check for updates. Just above that there is an option also that you can check that will check for updates automatically. This holds true for many different windows based programs these days. - Original Message - From: John Justice [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: BLIND COMPUTING MAILING LIST Blind-Computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 4:38 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] GOLD WAVE UPDATING QUESTION I'm sure by now my Gold Wave needs updating but I'm not sure how to do that.
